THE 42ND BDO LAKE TAUPO CYCLE CHALLENGE IS HERE AND WE ARE PUMPED!

If this is your first ‘Lake taupo Cycle Challenge’ - welcome - we know you will enjoy the buzz of NZ’s biggest cycling occasion, and welcome back to the thousands of you who have done the event before and keep coming back for more. A special welcome to our International visitors - we hope you are staying on to enjoy the warmth of the local hospitality and make the most of the unique experiences on offer in our special region.

A huge part of the success of the event is our 800+ volunteers who have been working hard already and will be out there on the day helping to deliver a fantastic event experience for you. Their enthusiasm is infectious and we know you will appreciate them as much as we do!

We’re also pretty excited about some new additions we have made to the event and hope that you will enjoy the entertainment and other activities we have added to the event to provide the whole family with a cool event experience. This kicks off on Friday night with Cycle Mania for kids followed by Criterium races where you will see some of New Zealand’s top riders involved in some fast-paced street racing action to set the scene for an exciting weekend.

So whatever challenge you are taking on this weekend, strap yourselves in for an amazing time.

COURSE INFORMATIONAll road surfaces are sealed, are of a good national standard and the entire course is well sign-posted and marshalled.

Please refer to the Course Map on page 12

For much of State Highway One between Turangi and Hatepe Hill Transit NZ has placed “rumble strips” on the left shoulder and in the centre of the road. You are advised to be particularly careful in this section of the course.

Note that the Holden Mens Classic and Bike Barn Round the Lake (road) course varies from the Start group 9 and Enduro course on Poihipi Road.

WHAT YOU NEED ON THE COURSE• Spare tubes• Tools• Pump• Tyre levers• Puncture repair kit• Drink bottle• Food• Sunscreen• Warm clothingSUNSMART Don’t Let the Sun Get Under Your Skin. Sunscreen is available at some support stations and the Kuratau and Motuoapa start points.

COURSE SERVICES• St John Ambulance• Support Vans – you are responsible

for your own repair of punctures and mechanical issues. Support vans are provided but may not be immediately available.

• All Support Stations have water.• Nuun sports replacement drink is

available at the support stations on the second half of the course and the BDO Huka MTB aid station

• Portaloos and bike racks at the Kuratau and Motuoapa start points.

• Rubbish bins at support stations and 3 designated rubbish drop zones around the course.

• Mechanics are available at the start line in Taupo and at Kuratau and Moutuoapa start points. The mechanics only carry limited spares – eg. spokes and wheels are not carried. You will be charged for any parts you use.

• Portaloos are located at Aid stations and at the Half the Lake and Quarter Lake start points.

CUT OFF TIMES• Management reserves the right to

remove riders from both the road and MTB course if it’s apparent they will not complete the event by 7pm or it’s deemed the safety of themselves or others could be compromised.

• Bike Barn Round the Lake – If you think you will take longer than 8:30 hours please choose start group 9.

• Enduro cut off time is 9pm.

DNF – IMPORTANT• If you do not complete your challenge

please report to the DNF desk in the Information Marquee to have this recorded on the day or text Event Comms at 021 054 1864.

LOST PROPERTYLost Property is open at theInformation Marquee on the Domain Saturday 9am – 7.30pm

PARKINGPlease see Taupo CBD map below with recommended parking options. Please note there will be no right turn from SH1 into Redoubt St.

We urge you to allow yourself plenty of time for your journey including breaks and drive safely. There will be heavy traffic on the roads and fatigue can be an issue on long journeys. If possible share the driving. Please enter Taupo town via the ETA and Tauhara Road or Napier-Taupo road. Avoid Wairakei Drive as it may be congested.

SAFETY • All entrants participate at their own risk• You must wear a New Zealand Safety

Standards approved cycle helmet, as required by law

• Obey the course marshals’ directions – they are there for your safety

• Keep as far left as practicable at all times

• Obey the NZ Road Code• Do not drop water bottles on the road,

there are designated rubbish drop zones around the course

• Do not ride on aerobars when you are in a bunch

• Do not use MP3 players/iPods while riding

• Pull off the road when using a mobile phone

• All traffic laws must be obeyed. Police Traffic Safety officers and Event Safety marshals will be patrolling the course

• There are many precautions that we take to make your ride a safe one, but remember that the entire course takes place on public roads. ALL ROADS ARE OPEN AT ALL TIMES

• Should you require assistance whilst on the course please wait on the side of the road for an official course vehicle. For urgent assistance phone: Event Comms 021 054 1864

• The map on page 12 shows the course. Access will be restricted for through traffic on parts of Poihipi Rd and Whangamata Rd from 6:00am to 10:30am. However, local, event and emergency traffic will be using this part of the course. All other parts of the course are completely open to vehicles.

• Redoubt St will be closed between 4.00pm to 8.00pm Friday and 5.00am to 10.00am Saturday.

HALF THE LAKE AND QUARTER LAKE BIKE AND RIDER TRANSPORTTransportation of riders and bikes is provided free of charge as part of the Event. It is essential that you only use the provided services.

No support, accompanying or drop-off vehicles are necessary or allowed. Riders using such vehicles may be disqualified from the event.

BIKE LOADING TIMESAll Half the Lake and Quarter Lake bikes should be dropped off for loading at the bike loading area on the Event Village on Friday 10am – 10pm.

NOTE: No Saturday loading as the truck will be leaving in the middle of the night

Our bike transporters are colour coded to ensure your bike gets to the correct start point. Half the Lake colour is RED and Quarter Lake is YELLOW

• Ensure that your RED/YELLOW bike sticker is attached to your seat post with the colour clearly visible

• Remove cycle computers and loose items from your bike

• There will be security for the bikes overnight

• The bike racks are designed for conventional bikes only. If you intend to use an unconventional bike please contact [email protected] so that we can consider arrangements for its transportation.

HALF THE LAKE BUS DEPARTURE TIMESWe provide comfortable buses to transport riders to Kuratau Start point. All buses leave from the corner of Titiraupenga and Horomatangi Streets.

• Half the Lake Buses will be leaving from Taupo from 8:30am and every 20mins until the last bus at 10:15am.

• No bus will be leaving after 10:15am

QUARTER LAKE BUS DEPARTURE TIMESWe provide comfortable buses to transport riders to Motuoapa Start point. All buses leave from the corner of Titiraupenga and Horomatangi Streets.

• Quarter Lake Buses will be leaving Taupo from 11.00 am and every 20mins until 11.40am

• No bus will be leaving after 11.40am.You will need to refer to the Event Village Map on page 10 - 11 for these key locations:

• Bike Loading, Event Village• Bus Loading, corner of Titiraupenga

and Horomatangi Streets• Drop Bag Returns, Event Village

DROP BAG SERVICE• Re-usable pull cord fabric bag provided• Numbered sticker provided to stick on

your drop bag pull cord.• Leave any gear to be “minded”.• Drop off at Start. There will be designated

drop off points at the start shoot.• Drop bag points at Kuratau and

Motuoapa starts will be clearly marked.

• Drop bags will be collected from these points and taken to the drop bag return area (see the Event Village Map on page 10-11).

• Collect from the drop bag return area before prize giving.

• Do not leave valuables in bag.• All care, no responsibility – no claims

for lost gear will be accepted.• Note that the logistics do not allow

for Drop Bags to go TO any of the Kuratau or Motuoapa start points, only to return surplus gear back to the collection area at the Event Village.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS• The event is committed to waste

minimisation and sustainability. We ask you to place ALL rubbish in the bins provided - recyclable items will be sorted from these bins. Glass recycling bins will be available.

• We also ask that you think about the environment while riding around the course – if you take it with you then bring it back – do not litter anywhere. Do not throw your water bottles on the road. All aid Stations will have waste bins.

• Don’t just cycle – ride and re-cycle.• If you would like to recycle your

event bag these can be left at the information marquee.

• Please refill your drink bottle.

GETTING TO THE START• Tongariro St is closed from Spa Rd

roundabout to Ruapehu St for Start Group Assembly.

• BDO Huka MTB starts assemble on the grass area next to the Road Bike starts. See Event Village Map for exact position

• We suggest you cycle to the start line• If approaching the start line from

the North (Acacia Bay, Nukuhau, Rangatira Park) cyclists must exit road at the Control Gates Bridge and use footpaths/tracks to access the start. This is a safety measure to avoid tangling with other starting cyclists being released.

• Do not cross any barriered areas.

AT THE FINISHAll finishes are on Tongariro St in front of the Great Lake Centre. Except Enduro.

AFTER YOU FINISH• A secure Bike Park is available for you

to store your bike while in the Event Village. Please refer to Event Village Map on page 10-11.

• Your bike can be safely stored by our BIKE VALETS who will deliver it to the secure bike park for your later collection by showing your event bib as identification.

• Please ensure you collect your bike immediately after prize giving.

• Massage $20 for 15 mins• Replenish at any of our DB Export

outlets• Grab a bite to eat• Entertainment all afternoon• Prize giving at 6:00pm• Please don’t litter
