Did you know there is lots of important security informaon and links on the NHW web page of the Orston Parish website? Please have a look! Credit card cloning or skimmingThis is where someone obtains your credit card details and copies them onto a bogus card. Restaurants, bars, and petrol staons seem to be the places where credit card incidents happen most frequently. How does this happen? Method 1 - The scammer recruits an employee willing to parcipate in the scheme. Bartenders, waing staff, or shop assistants are oſten prime targets. They are given a pocket-size device with a scanning slot, something that resembles a pager and can be worn on a belt. They swipe customers' credit cards through the device taking just a few seconds capturing all the details stored in the card's magnec stripe. Prevenon: Dont let the card out of sight and keep a close watch on staff handling your card. Method 2 - Credit card skimmersare placed over card swipe mechanisms at ATMs and petrol staons, or other types of credit card reader. Prevenon: Check for credit card skimmersanywhere you swipe your credit card, but especially at petrol staons and ATMs. If anything looks odd dont use the machine. Method 3 RFID (Radio Frequency Idenficaon) fraud is less common but with contactlesscards becoming the norm it is an issue. It is an electronic form of pick-pockeng. Standing just six inches away criminalsRFID readers can copy your bank details. Prevenon: Use RFID-blocking sleeves or wallets for your cards. A metallic foil lining effecvely blocks out any scanning aempts Regular checking of your bank statements is always good pracce. If you spot something that looks dodgy, contact your bank or building society immediately.
