Part II
Introduction to Grading System(Semester 1, 2009-2010 Academic Year)

Grading System
1. Teachers marking papers, please refer to the UIC Grade Distribution Guidelines (revised recently, distributed).
Letter Grades
Excellent: A, A-Good: B+, B, B-Satisfactory: C+, C, C- Marginal Pass: DConditional Pass: E (only applicable for year-long subject)
Fail: F Incomplete: I (uploaded by AR ONLY)
Withdrawn: W (uploaded by AR ONLY)
Binary Grades
1. S (Satisfactory) & U (Unsatisfactory)2. Subjects applicable: (1) WPE Modules
(cohort before 2009), (2) ELC NCB subjects (Effective Written Communication, Effective Oral Communication ) (cohort before 2009), (3) some Internship courses (more than 50% Assessment Weighting given by external third party, e.g. TESL Internship)

Grade Distribution Guidelines (for internal reference only)
A (equivalent to at least 80 marks out of 100)
0-10% Students could get this grade
A + B 40-65% Students could get this grade
C+ D No % limit
*F (Students with a score below 30% in the Final Examination will not be allowed to sit for the Supplementary Examination)
To be decided by each Examiner
* The new rule will be only applicable from 2010-2011 Academic Year onwards.

Special Notes for Grade Distribution
Following students will NOT be included
into the Subject Grade Distribution:
1. Exchange Students
2. Students who have officially withdrawn
the subject. (Grade ‘W’ has been given)

3. The date for grade submission is the 17th Jan 2010 (This is the deadline!). [Note: For those subjects which have External
Examiners, the Programme Coordinators should send the results to the External Examiners before the 14th Jan 2010 and get their comments before the 17th Jan 2010]

Reminder on Grade Release
Subject instructors should NOT release any
grades to students privately. The Academic
Registry will officially release grades upon
the Senate's approval.
Grade Appeal Procedures (1/2)
1. Students submit one application form for one subjectto the relevant Division or General Education Office orCenters within a week after the release of theSupplementary Examination Results.
2. The Division (or General Education) Officers / contactpersons of Centers check the application forms foraccuracy and distribute the applications in group to thevarious subject teachers to double check the grades.
Grade Appeal Procedures (2/2)
3. The instructor(s) should return his/her comments to therelevant Division (or General Education) Officer / contactperson of Centres in a week after receiving theapplication. If there are any grades that should be changed,the reason(s) must be stated.
4. The Academic Registry will double check the accuracyand inform students about the results within three weeksafter the application deadline.
Examination Materials Returning
For Examination Materials, such as Answer
Books, Multiple Choices Answer Sheets and
Question Papers, you may keep them until
the end of grade appeal and return the
materials to AR in the first 2 weeks of next
semester.
