Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to theJohn A. Reisenbach Foundation's 20th anniversary GalaTribute for a Better and Safer New York.

This year's event is very special, not only because it marks 20 years of making a differencein this great city where we work and live, but also because we have the good fortune ofrecognizing two of the most influential people in our business: Carolyn Everson, theVice President of Global Marketing Solutions for Facebook, and Rino Scanzoni theChief Investment Officer of GroupM.

The Reisenbach Foundation has become the premier media and advertising charitableorganization in our industry that focuses on the City of New York. Over $6 milliondollars have been given to worthy organizations that focus on improving the qualityof life in this city we all cherish.

As we look forward to continuing the tradition of service for "Reisenbach" for the next20 years, we are grateful for the commitment and dedication of our honorees and theirorganizations, the Reisenbach family, everyone at the foundation, and all of you withus tonight. I am proud to stand with you as we remember our fallen colleague andrecognize the good that has been done in his name.

Welcome to the 20th Anniversary celebration of the founding of theReisenbach Foundation. While the Foundation was formed to honor awonderful young man whose life was shortened by a random killing,we can all be pleased that we have fulfilled our promise to JohnReisenbach’s family. In his memory, we have helped to improve dra-matically the quality of life in New York City, so others can safely takeadvantage of all the wondrous activities that make New York one of thegreat cities in this world.

We congratulate Carolyn Everson and Rino Scanzoni and thank them both for all they havedone to earn the Reisenbach Distinguished Citizenship Awards. Both honorees representdifferent parts of the media industry and use their considerable influence to support theReisenbach mission.

We are especially pleased to recognize the first Reisenbach Young Distinguished CitizenshipHonoree, Jerri Chou, who will help us attract more young people to keep our missionvibrantly alive for another 20 years and more.

I thank our Gala Chairman, Ed Erhardt, for all he did to make this event the biggest andmost successful in our 20 year history.

John Reisenbach1956–1990

John Reisenbach represented the qualities of every“regular guy.” His friends and business associatescontinue to stress that his passionate and stubborn,sarcastic and good-humored, caring and professionalapproach to everything enriched the lives of thosearound him. What they remember most is John’sincredible capacity for compassion and friendship.

John attended Northwestern University where he metVictoria Nelson in 1976. They moved to New York in1978, marrying in 1979. John began his career as amedia planner at Ogilvy & Mather, quickly moving upto supervisor in the renowned ad agency’s networktelevision programming department.

In 1982, John joined Backer & Spielvogel, continuing todevelop his contacts and reputation in network

television, syndication and cable as a savvy and creative agency negotiator. He joined AllAmerican Television in 1987 as senior vice president and director of advertising sales, andwas successful by any measure.

John worked hard and played hard. He loved his family, his friends and his pets. Most ofall, he loved life. While he might shake his head in wonder at the creation of the John A.Reisenbach Foundation, he would be gratified to know that so many have worked hard,together, to honor his life. And we take solace in knowing that his name lives on in themany wonderful projects of the Foundation.

THE JOHN A. REISENBACH FOUNDATION

HISTORY

Late in the evening on July 30, 1990, 33-year-old John Reisenbach, a young and energetictelevision advertising executive, was shot and killed while on a pay phone on the cornerof his Greenwich Village apartment building. His wife soon came down to the street tosee what was taking so long. No motive, no identified shooter, no reason. The case isstill considered open by the New York Police Department.

After the funeral, friends and colleagues joined together to honor John and create some-thing positive from this tragedy. The John A. Reisenbach Foundation was launched inJuly 1991, dedicating itself to programs for safety and education in New York City. Formore than a decade, the Foundation’s mission has been unwavering, to honor the life ofa good though ordinary man through good and extraordinary measures.

FOUNDATION MISSION

The John A. Reisenbach Foundation was established to foster and support programsdesigned to make New York City a safer and better place to work and live. Throughsupport of people and businesses in the media and entertainment industries, more than$5 million has been raised to develop and operate programs that enhance public safetyand education, and encourage other institutions to do the same.

Carolyn Everson is the Vice President of Global MarketingSolutions at Facebook, where she leads the global marketingsolutions team focused on top strategic accounts and globalagencies. In addition, she oversees media strategy, advertisingsales, and account management.

Prior to Facebook, Carolyn was the Corporate Vice President ofMicrosoft’s Global Advertising Sales and Trade MarketingTeams. Carolyn led the company’s advertising business acrossBing, MSN, Windows Live, Mobile, Gaming, Atlas and theMicrosoft Media Network.

Carolyn spent seven years at MTV Networks. Her last role was as Chief Operating Officer andExecutive Vice President of U.S. Ad Sales for MTV Networks where she oversaw strategic plan-ning, operations and finance for MTVN’s U.S. Ad Sales department. She also was responsible forMTVN's Direct Response business and the cross platform, cross brand strategic sales and market-ing group called Generator.

Carolyn has also worked at Primedia Inc., where she was Vice President and General Manager ofseveral digital businesses, and held business development positions at brands including ZagatSurvey and Walt Disney Imagineering. She is a board member of the Effies and dmg.

Carolyn holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and communications from Villanova Universitywhere she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She also obtained a master’s degree in businessadministration from Harvard where she was a Baker Scholar.

Carolyn has been named one of Ad Age’s Women To Watch; Fortune put her on the 40 under 40list 2 years in a row; she was recognized by AWNY as Changing the Game and inducted into theprestigious Hall of Achievement by the AAF.

Carolyn resides in Montclair, NJ where she has twin daughters, Taylor and Kennedy and a husband, Doug who works at Merck Pharmaceuticals.

Rino Scanzoni has been a media industry leader for more than 25 years.As Chief Investment Officer for GroupM, he oversees all trading andimplementation for the GroupM agencies, which include Maxus, MEC,MediaCom, and Mindshare. He also holds the title of Chairman of MEC.

He is a perennial member of Mediaweek magazine’s annual list of the“50 most indispensable executives in media” and in 2007 was named themagazine’s “Media Executive of the Year.” In bestowing the award,

Mediaweek credited Scanzoni with pioneering the use of commercial ratings plus three-day DVRviewing (commonly called C3) as the standard negotiating currency for upfront network TV buys forthe entire advertising industry.

Prior to joining MEC, Scanzoni served as Executive Vice President, Managing Director of MediaVestEntertainment, which specialized in media planning and implementation for the entertainmentindustry until December 2000. Prior to the formation of MediaVest Entertainment in 1999, Scanzoniserved as Executive Vice President and Director of National Broadcast for MediaVest, TeleVest andD’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles. Under his management of the agency’s national broadcastgroup, billings tripled, a result of additional assignments from key clients as well as significantnew business growth.

Scanzoni joined D’Arcy in 1978 as an Assistant Director of network programming on accounts includingRichardson-Vicks, Texaco and E.F. Hutton. In 1982 he was promoted to Associate Director ofNational Broadcast on Kraft General Foods and Richardson-Vicks. He was named Senior VicePresident in 1986 and assumed additional responsibility for Procter & Gamble, Paramount andSun-Diamond. Before joining D’Arcy, Scanzoni had early experience as a Network TV Supervisorat BBDO and as a Senior Media Planner at Ted Bates.

A graduate of Queens College-CUNY of New York, Scanzoni lives in Briarcliff Manor, New York.

For the first time, the Reisenbach Foundation is honoring a Young Adult with aDistinguished Citizen award as well. The requirements were someone working inthe media/advertising community in New York City who embodies the mission of

the Foundation by giving back and supporting non-profit organizations.

Our recipient is Jerri Chou, founder of Lovely Day, All Day Buffet andFeastforgood.com; her primary focus is to help high-impact entrepreneurs and

corporations participate in a collaborative process of social business innovation,incubation and development. She also created The Feast Social InnovationConference supporting significant partnerships and awareness generation ofvarious social issues around New York City, bringing innovators from around theworld to NYC to explore ways of making life better for people within this city.

A corporate social innovation strategist, Jerri is aleader in developing innovative strategies for leadingcompanies to drive social change and businessgrowth. As founding partner of All Day Buffet andThe Feast Social Innovation Conference, Jerri has adeep understanding of networking in the socialinnovation space. Through her work, she has gainedextensive knowledge of innovation, business strategy,new model research and integration, branding, communications and partnership development.

Her past work includes marketing and advertisingexperience with major brands and development witha host of New York-based startups. She is an advisorto The NYU Reynolds Program as well as a writer forthe Huffington Post and USA Networks.

2011-2012 Programs & Initiatives

John Jay College of Criminal Justice

John A. Reisenbach Master’s Scholarships: Graduate students in the Master’s Degree Programs inCriminal Justice, Forensic Science or Forensic Psychology with a minimum GPA of 3.5, may be eligible forthe John A Reisenbach Master’s Scholarship. After graduation, the winning candidate will have to work inthe New York City area to make the City safer and more secure. Through 2010, the Foundation has awarded30 scholarships.

Citizens for New York City

The New Yorkers for Better Neighborhoods Reisenbach Safety Awards: Grants range from $500 to $3,000and are given to volunteer-led community groups in economically under-resourced neighborhoods acrossthe city to work on community projects that bring neighbors together to improve their neighborhoods.Citizens Committee complements these grants with other support services: One-on-one project implemen-tation assistance, and skills-building workshops.

Current recipients include Young Gents Society, East New York, Brooklyn, Young Changemakers of theImmigrant Center for Empowerment and Training, Flushing, New York, Bainbridge Street/Malcom X BlockAssociation, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, Dreams Deferred Decatur Street Block Association, Bushwick, Brooklynand Friends of Gulick Park, Lower East Side, Manhattan.

John A Reisenbach Focus 10 Program

To commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the Reisenbach Foundation, the Citizen's Committee hasdeveloped a program to invest in the ten most dangerous neighborhoods in New York City.

While crime in New York City has declined significantly since the 1980's and 1990's, violence and criminalactivity continue to plague NYC's low income, under served neighborhoods. This initiative will supportvolunteer led watch groups in these communities with support from local Police precincts.

Safe Horizon – Streetwork Project

Safe Horizon established Streetwork in 1984 with a mission to offer homeless, runaway and heavily street-involved youth the opportunity to find safety and reclaim a sense of dignity and self-worth. The youngpeople served are typically highly traumatized and have run away from or been kicked out of families orfoster homes where they endured years of neglect and abuse.

One of the keys to Streetwork's success are their case managers who provide crisis intervention, case plan-ning, referrals and immediate access to food, clothes, and hygiene supplies. They advocate for clients seekingpublic assistance, escort them to outside appointments, and serve as liaisons to other social service providers.

JOHN A.REISENBACHFOUNDATION

The Reisenbach Foundations funds Streetwork Case Managers. Each works with approximately 150Streetwork “clients” each year. Each has an average of 50 outside referrals each month helping youth tofind everything from mental health care to job preparation classes to housing.

NYC Police Foundation – CRIME STOPPERS

For 25 years, Crime Stoppers has served as a model public-private partnership and an invaluable tool forthe NYPD’s efforts to apprehend our city’s most dangerous criminals. Nearly 5,000 violent crimes havebeen solved through anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers. Rewards for these anonymous tips are fundedsolely by donations to the Police Foundation.

New York Cares – Youth Services Club Anti-Crime Initiative

New York Cares’ Youth Service Club (YSC) program is the only one of its kind in New York City that bringsa structured, award-winning community service and leadership building initiative to some of New YorkCity’s most under-resourced public schools. Beginning in 2007, The John A. Reisenbach Foundation imple-mented a crime prevention curriculum into the program. This is a particularly important program enhance-ment since the majority of participating YSC schools are located in high-crime areas and students haveexpressed an interest in learning more about crime prevention. This year YSC’s Anti-Crime Initiative willinvolve 20 schools with over 200 youth volunteers participating.

CAPP - Child Abuse Prevention Program

During the past twenty-one years, CAPP has reached over 300,000 New York City school children andmade them aware of their right to be safe. More than 24,000 school children attended the CAPP’s one-of-a-kind Child Safety Workshop.

Child Safety Workshops: One of the most tragic aspects of child abuse is that its victims are not able tohelp themselves because they are often manipulated to believe that they are somehow responsible for theabuse and remain silent allowing their victimization to escalate. The Workshop uses life-sized puppets toteach school children to recognize, resist and report instances of abuse and neglect. CAPP actively combatsthe misconception that abuse will go away if we pretend it does not exist. Veiling the problem in secrecyonly permits the abusive behavior to fester. Eight workshops for approximately 700 students will take placethis year.

Children’s Clothes Closets The Clothes Closets stock clothing, pajamas, toiletries, toys and books. Theseitems are placed in overnight bags that are given to children who need to be moved to a safer environmentbecause of abuse in their homes. Children come into the center on the way to foster care with nothing butthe clothing they are wearing. The children pick the items for the bag themselves; in this way they feel theyhave something of their own to take with them when they are moved. A new clothes closet will be openedthis year at the Safe Horizon Childhood Advocacy Center in the Bronx and others continue to be re-supplied.

Police Athletic League Youth Link

NYC’s detention centers are filled with young people who have not committed violent offenses and are notconsidered a public threat. 92% are delinquents remanded for non-violent offenses, misdemeanors andparole violations. 46% of youth released from NYC detention facilities are readmitted in the same year. 82%of Youth Link participants successfully completed their probation in 2008 and remained out of prison oneyear after.

PAL’s in-house internships are targeted towards participants between the ages of 14-15 years old. Most arefrom low-income households, and are in dire need of a job for themselves, and in some cases to help sup-port their families. For many, this is their first job experience. With a criminal record and no prior experi-ence, it is very difficult for these young people to find work in their communities. Youth Link providesopportunities to work as office assistants, custodial staff, or program aides within PAL Centers. Interestedparticipants have to write an essay, fill out a job application, interview for the position, and provide lettersof reference from school officials. They are also closely supervised by PAL staff and evaluated regularly ontheir performance. This is a great opportunity for participants to gain work experience, and to be mentoredby caring adults in PAL who constantly reinforce the importance of remaining in school and developingstrong work ethics.

Internationals Network for Public Schools

Internationals Network for Public Schools serves recently arrived immigrant English language learners inNYC. The 2008 4-year graduation rate for ELL students in New York City was 40%. Internationals gradua-tion rate over the same period was 72% with a 91% acceptance rate to college. The Internationals NetworkSummer Institute is a two-day event that will train a minimum of 120 ELL educators. Ongoing support forSummer Institute participants, both Internationals teachers and teachers in other district schools, will beginwith a follow up survey within 2-3 months after the Institute to gather evidence and examples of ways theworkshops had an impact on their thinking and practice.

Congratulations to you and your colleagues on the Foundation’s 20th anniversary. Through your

support and generosity to so many important programs, the John A. Reisenbach Foundation is

helping to make New York City a safer place to live. Safe Horizon is very proud to be among

your partners. We are deeply grateful to the Foundation for your continuing support of our Streetwork Project

for homeless, runaway, and heavily street-involved youth in New York City. This year, your

grant will help Streetwork to conduct nearly 19,000 outreach contacts, provide intensive drop-in

center services to nearly 2,000 young people, serve more than 50,000 meals, and provide a safe

place to sleep to more than 200 homeless youth.

Streetwork is one of the few programs in New York City designed specifically to address the

complex and varied needs of homeless and runaway youth. Without Streetwork, homeless young

people would have few options but to remain on the streets, which places them at great risk for

assault, abuse, exploitation, and victimization. At the same time, lacking resources, many of

these young people may resort to crimes such as shoplifting and pickpocketing to get money for

food and shelter. By supporting Streetwork, the John A. Reisenbach Foundation’s grant has a

dual impact by directly helping to keep many of the most vulnerable young people in our

community safe and providing them with options and resources to move towards healthier and

more productive lives.

Thank you again so much for your years of generous support. Together, we are helping to

provide brighter futures to thousands of at-risk young people and to build a better New York City

Dear Board of Directors,

On behalf of Internationals Network for Public Schools’ Board and staff, the school faculty and thousands of families and

students served by our team, I extend deep appreciation for the ongoing partnership of The John A. Reisenbach

Foundation. Your generous support of our efforts to prepare highly effective educators who in turn raise achievement

levels and create success for the many marginalized recently-arrived, high school age English language learners (ELLs)

within the New York City Department of Education is a testament to your great work to create a better and safer New

York City for all of its residents.

Internationals Network for Public Schools focuses exclusively on creating educational opportunities for immigrant English

language learners. The 13 International High Schools within our New York City network successfully educate more than

4,200 of the City’s most vulnerable ELLs. Over 90% of our youth and families live below the poverty line and all score in

the bottom quartile on English tests when they enter high school. Despite these barriers and the additional challenges

presented as our students engage in rigorous academics while acculturating to a new society, Internationals Network

prepares college and career ready graduates who in turn fully participate in and contribute to society in truly outstanding

ways. A recent highlight:

Flushing International High School students Deng Lin and M.D. Uddin were invited to present their research findings

on the use of social media as a research proxy for understanding human communities at the NetSci 2011

Conference in Budapest, Hungary. Their effort was selected as one of the top projects of the NetSci High competition

funded by the National Science Foundation and administered by the New York Hall of Science.

Through our grant from The John A. Reisenbach Foundation, over 100 teachers, guidance counselors, and school

leaders from across NYC participated in our 2011 Summer Institute, a professional development conference designed to

prepare school faculty to address the specific needs of ELLs. A majority of these educators are also attending additional

Internationals’ conferences and events throughout the school year to further enhance their professional learning. Your

partnership enables us to support these educators as they increase outcomes and opportunities for English language

learners, one of the most underserved and disadvantaged student populations in the five boroughs.
