[ INTRODUC TION ]

INTRODUCTION

Families and communities need schools to be ready to reopen as soon as public health officials signal that it is safe. After all, the nation has recently been reminded just how vital schools really are. Schools connect students with peers and mentors, channel youthful energy into productive pursuits, teach essential academic skills and knowledge, and give overwhelmed parents room to breathe and work.

Reopening schools in a manner that is safe and responsive to the needs of families and communities will involve novel challenges (Bailey, John, 2020). Disruptions to instructional time in the classroom can have a severe impact on a child’s ability to learn. The longer marginalized children are out of the school the less likely they are to return (UN Policy Brief, May 2020). Children from the poorest households are already almost five times more likely to be out of primary school than those from the richest. Further, prolonged closures disrupt essential school-based services and can cause stress and anxiety due to the loss of peer interaction, disrupted routines and social emotional support.

[ RE-ENTRY PLAN 2020-2021 ]

MSD OF LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP RE-ENTRY PLAN 2020-2021

The MSD of Lawrence Township is committed to providing a safe and optimal learning and working environment for all, and has been working diligently on plans to reopen schools under conditions that are as safe as possible. Guidance has been provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Indiana State Health Department (ISDH), the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD), and the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) for districts to use as they make local decisions that meet both their unique circumstances and available resources. Given the nature of the pandemic, it will be important to recognize that even within our own district, buildings will face unique needs and challenges with regard to re-entry. Please keep in mind that, once a plan is in place, procedures may continue to change given the fluidity of the situation and the possibility of resurgence. Under any re-entry strategy, there may be some families in which, given unique and individual circumstances, students are unable to physically attend school. As a result, a virtual program will be available to all K-12 families with dedicated virtual teachers for each building so that students will remain connected to their home school.

Visit www.LTschools.org/re-entry for complete re-entry details.

ONSITE INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL On-site instruction for students K-6 will follow the building daily schedules.

Start Times for School:

ELC/Elementary: 8:00 AM - 2:25 PMBefore and After Care will be available.

Middle School: 8:50 AM - 3:45 PM

High School: 8:50 AM - 3:40 PM

Students will have access to the same curriculum, regardless of if on-site or remote. On-site instruction for students in grades 7-12 has been modified at the recommendation of the Marion County Public Health Department. MSD of Lawrence Township will be shifting to an in-person hybrid model for secondary students in grades 7-12. This includes Belzer Middle School, Fall Creek Valley Middle School, Lawrence Central & Lawrence North High Schools, McKenzie Center for Innovation & Technology, and Lawrence Advance Academy. This will replace the current “in-person” option, while the full virtual option will still be available. This hybrid model will allow for better social distancing, as less than 50% of students will be in the school building at any given time.

Students in middle school will not be permitted to carry backpacks during the instructional day. Backpacks should be put in student lockers upon building entry. High school students are permitted to carry backpacks.

ATTENDANCEStudents who opt for on-site instruction are expected to attend school on time on designated days. Monday - Friday for grades K-6 and on hybrid scheduled days for grades 7-12. Attendance in Skyward will remain the official attendance for the MSD of Lawrence Township. If a student is sick or unable to attend school, please contact the school to report the absence. There will be no attendance incentives for students.

VIRTUAL INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL The MSD of Lawrence Township is committed to providing a high quality, off-site learning experience for families who are not comfortable having their child on campus this fall as result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, a virtual program will be available to all K-12 families with dedicated virtual teachers for each building so that students will remain connected to their home school. With the delay of the start of school, the deadline to enroll in the virtual program has been pushed back to August 27. Those who prefer an off-site virtual model will be committing to either nine weeks or a full semester of remote instruction. Students in Kindergarten through grade six will commit to nine weeks of remote learning, at the end of which they will have the option to return to on-campus instruction. Students in grades seven through twelve will commit to a full semester of virtual programming. At the conclusion of the semester, they will have the option to return to on-campus instruction.

Please keep in mind that there will be limits to the courses that are offered virtually at the high school level. For a complete list, please click here. Students participating in virtual programming will be eligible to attend school in-person for a desired course that is not offered virtually.

Virtual instruction will be conducted using synchronous and asynchronous methods.

Synchronous instruction takes place when a virtual learning student is able tojoin a live online lesson from another location and is participating in real-timewith other students. Example: A student joins a Zoom meeting with their teacherand other students at 10 a.m. during their math class.

Asynchronous instruction takes place when a student accesses virtual contentprovided by the teacher at the time of their choosing. Example: A studentwatches a recorded math lesson on Canvas and completes an assignment at atime the student chooses.

In the virtual program, High school and middle school students will follow their daily schedule of classes. Daily attendance is expected. In grades K-6, a specific schedule of live, direct instruction as well as live, student collaboration times will be communicated by the classroom teacher to each family. In addition, the live instruction will be recorded if families are unable to access at the designated time. Office hours will be offered by all teachers for virtual students. All live instruction and office hours will occur during the times of the regular school day.

The Return-To-LEARN ModelThrough our shared experiences with virtual learning in the Spring of 2020 and over the Summer, we have learned a great deal. The Return-To-Learn model has been built with these lessons in mind. Below are the cornerstone beliefs that have molded our vision for teaching and learning during the uncertainty of our current times.

• We believe that we must put the Learning before the virtual. Despite the challenges of distance learning, our students must achieve at high levels.

• We believe that the skills needed for students to be successful in a Virtual Learning environment mirror the skills needed to be successful in the New Economy.

• We believe that chief among these skills is communication in all forms. This includes a heavy reliance on electronic communication in modern formats.

• We believe that a student’s connection to their school, teacher(s) and classmates is a key element of their social development. As such those connections should be valued and prioritized.

Learning Management Systems (LMS)

Learning Management System (LMS) - The LMS is the virtual classroom space that is shared by teachers and students. In this space, teachers post critical information such as assignments, teaching videos, articles/readings, and other school related content. Think of it like an interactive website for the class. For students, the LMS is used to communicate with their teacher about learning. Students use the LMS to turn in assignments, access important resources and even communicate directly with their teachers. In a virtual learning environment, the LMS is the first and most important tool for students to be ready to use.

Optional

Seesaw is the Learning Management System for Grades K-4. In Seesaw, teachers post activities to a shared timeline with students. The timeline feels much like posts to social media. Students respond to the activities using the response tools in Seesaw. Teachers can also organize posts into folders. These folders will be used to organize class information by subject such as Class Info, Math and English. This helps students and families navigate to the important information they need for the day. Seesaw can also be used by teachers and families to communicate directly with one another through messages.

Canvas is the Learning Management System for Grades 5-12.In Canvas, teachers construct an online classroom for students for every subject. For grades 5-6, this will appear as separate “course” for subjects like STEM or Humanities. For grades 7-12, a separate Canvas course for every class on their schedule. In each course, learning content will appear on separate “lesson” pages and will be organized by Week. From the lesson page, students will be able to access any videos, links, readings, activities, quizzes and other resources that teachers expect students to use.

For the 2020-21 School Year, Zoom will be the primary tool used to host video conferences in MSDLT. For VIrtual Students and Staff, Zoom wil provide an opportunity for teachers and students to connect virtually in real-time.

For the 2020-21 School Year, Google Chat will be the primary tool used to provide students with instant messaging capability with teachers in MSDLT. For VIrtual Students and Staff, Google Chat will be an important communication tool that will allow for quick, text style conversations on an as needed basis.

For the 2020-21 School Year, Parent Square will be the primary tool used for wide-scale communication with parents/families in MSDLT. Parent Square will be used for school and class related communication directly to Parents. The bulk of this communication will be administrative in nature and will not pertain to specific issues regarding your child. For that type of direct communication we will continue to rely on eMail or phone calls.

Virtual Learning Lesson Types

Instruction Block

The list of Virtual Learning Lesson Types is meant to provide Families with some guidance for what to expect from the Virtual Program. The foundation of student learning in schools, virtual or otherwise, is high-quality teaching. However, not every minute of every school day is dedicated to pure instruction. The list below includes a menu of different teaching & learning configurations you might experience this year.

Advisory Block / Morning Meeting

Collaboration / Lab Block

1:1 Check-Ins

Office Hours

Intervention Block

For Elementary students, a regular morning meeting with your teacher and your full classroom will be held. For Secondary students, a frequent “Advisory” or “Flex’ block will be held. In these settings students join in with their peers both live and virtually to begin or end their day. During these sessions, students are often asked to reflect on their learning, conduct mindfulness or Social-Emotional exercises, and participate in team building activities with their peers. During our current uncertainty and difficult times, families should expect these sessions to be a point of emphasis at their school.

This is the most frequent lesson type that students will experience. For most, these sessions will be conducted in real-time. During an instruction Block, there is a clear learning target that students are aiming to achieve. Teachers will structure these blocks in different patterns including partner work, whole class work, group work or independent work. Our aim is to provide Instruction Blocks in real-time for most virtual students. However, we also understand that many students may be unable to login at the same time as the class. As such, we will make efforts to record Instruction or provide other means to access the Core Learning Targets of the day for “asynchronous” or non in-real-time students.

In many cases, students will be asked to collaborate with their peers. Time during the school day will be designed by teachers to allow students to work together in groups through hands-on experiences. Families should expect to hear their student speaking with other students and collaborating on learning tasks. This will be facilitated in a host of ways using technology tools by teachers. For families, providing students a quiet space with minimal distractions is important to allow them the opportunity to participate.

For Virtual Students, it will be common for teachers to schedule 1-on-1 check-ins with students. These will be scheduled during the school day when possible and will be an opportunity for the Teacher to make a valuable connection with every student. During these check-ins, families may overhear the teacher asking the student questions related to their learning or in some cases, just related to their everyday lives. The frequency of these check-ins will vary based on school, class and student.

In most cases, virtual teachers will offer a series of Office Hours for students and families to contact them. These times will be scheduled in advance and guidance will be provided for families and students to contact the teacher. It is important to note that teachers and school staff may always be contacted via phone or email. Office Hours are meant to be provided in addition to traditional methods of getting help from the teacher.

Many of our virtual students will require additional supports for their learning that they traditionally receive in schools. While this includes formal accommodations for students with special needs such as Exceptional Learners or English Language Learners, receiving additional supports to reach a learning goal are needed for all students at one time or another. The intervention block is a lesson type designed to provide small group or individual support for struggling learners. Most of the time these are short, infrequent or “on-the-fly” meetings with students to clarify a misunderstanding or nudge them in the right direction. Some of the time these are longer, more formal chunks of time that are regularly scheduled with a teacher or a team of teachers to provide support.
