WelcomeOn behalf of Amsterdam RAI, I am delighted to welcome you to ReMaTec2013.

We are extremely proud that the support for ReMaTec is stronger than ever, which has resulted in it currently being the fastest growing international event of Amsterdam RAI. We have nearly 180 exhibitors and a show floor that is 20% larger than the previous edition. Moreover, 90% of the exhibitors are from abroad, originating from no less than 24 countries.

ReMaTec has developed into the number one trade show for the professional reman industry. Next to being show host to many leading suppliers our ReMaTec Theatre plays an instrumental role in knowledge transfer. Free sessions to get up to speed with the latest reman developments are there for all visitors to attend. A great opportunity to learn, network and be inspired.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank APRA (Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association), FIRM (International Federation of Engine Remanufacturers and Rebuilders) and the members of our Exhibition Committee for their excellent assistance and support to continuously improve the quality of ReMaTec.

Following the 2011 show, which recorded arecord-breaking 60 per cent rise in visitor num-bers as well as significant interest by some ofthe remanufacturing industry’s global players,the numbers for next year’s exhibition pointtowards an even greater result.

“As of today more than one third of theexhibitors in ReMaTec2011 have confirmedtheir participation in next year’s show,” saysNiels Klarenbeek, Domain Manager Remanu-facturing, RAI Exhibitions. “As a result we havenow covered more than 50 per cent of lastyear’s exhibition space. In fact, we have neverbefore experienced such strong commitmentat such an early stage, with many exhibitorsbooking booths up to 18 months in advance.”

“ReMaTec’s development is reflecting therapidly increasing interest in remanufacturingwithin the areas of automotive, industrial andheavy duty sectors worldwide,” Niels Klaren-beek adds. “ReMaTec2011 clearly positionedthe ReMaTec exhibition as the world’s leadingevent for remanufacturing and there is now nodoubt that the show in 2013 will reaffirm this.”

to the show floor as well as focus on attractingnew visitor groups.

New challenges for APRA as remanbecomes more service-oriented

By definition, APRA, the Automotive PartsRemanufacturing Association, focuses on theautomotive parts remanufacturing business.That has been the case for more than fiftyyears and it will remain so for the foreseeablefuture. Quite simply, automotive reman is ourraison d’être. Even so, the fact is that anincreasing number of our members areextending their businesses into areas outsideour original, and clearly defined, field. Offhighway, industrial remanufacturing ofgensets and wind power generators are someof them. Likewise, the ‘parts’ to be remanu-factured are set to expand from small units toinclude highly complex installations, some ofthem immobile and installed decentralized.

The idea that remanufacturing opera-tions must take place in an industrial estateunder a solid roof or on a production linewith huge batch sizes will soon no longer bevalid. In consequence we must now acceptthat the industrial approach to remanufactur-ing is solely determined by its adherence togenuinely standardized industrial processes.

Key parametersOutstanding service, state-of-the-art reverseengineering, on-site operations, one pieceflow in production, powerful logistics andshort response time will, in future, be keyparameters for success in remanufacturing.The unique selling proposition of remanufac-tured products will change from ‘Best Valuefor Money’ to ‘saving raw materials.’ In fact,this is already supported by some govern-

ments under the heading of ‘Urban Mining’. New business opportunities will also

provide new challenges for our members. Because the evolution of business itself

is a challenge which APRA as an associationmust support, we have to include specific newactivities in our portfolio. In short, we mustensure that all relevant success factors for ourmembers are supported by us.

In previous times, the aim of most asso-ciations was clear – to provide a platform fornetworking for companies with similar pro-files and common interests. Today one of the

challenges is not only to provide opportuni-ties for networking but to extend such plat-forms so as to create networks of remanufac-turing experts.

Diverse memberships As our membership becomes more diverse,APRA will also have to meet the differentdemands of each member category - one fitfor all is a clear ‘no go’ going forward. If wewish to represent the entire remanufacturingindustry, there is a need to create specificoffers for small as well as for medium-sizedand large companies. We must recognize thatthe requirements of suppliers to remanufac-turers are different than those of enterprisesoperating on an international scale.

Active trade associations offer valuablebenefits for their members. Following the 2011 show, which recorded arecord-breaking 60 per cent rise in visitor num-bers as well as significant interest by some ofthe remanufacturing industry’s global players,the numbers for next year’s exhibition pointtowards an even greater result.

“As of today more than one third of theexhibitors in ReMaTec2011 have confirmedtheir participation in next year’s show,” saysNiels Klarenbeek, Domain Manager Remanu-facturing, RAI Exhibitions. “As a result we havenow covered more than 50 per cent of lastyear’s exhibition space. In fact, we have neverbefore experienced such strong commitmentat such an early stage, with many exhibitorsbooking booths up to 18 months in advance.”

Few are unfamiliar with the ‘throwaway’ culture of recentyears. In fact, almost everybody reading these lines will havefelt a pang of guilt when discarding something that was newand useful only a short while ago. “It’s not worth repairing. Itwill cost as much as a new (kitchen machines, tools, dish -washers, electrical appliances, computer gadgets, etc.) is an alltoo common argument. We have gotten used to it, not leastbecause, sadly, it makes some commercial sense – at least in thenarrowest meaning of the words.

I was reflecting on this recently while watching a team of Polishcraftsmen at work on my home. On a number of occasions theyfound items that had seen better days but were otherwise useful enough – except that a part had broken making them

unfit for use. Once again, the immediate instinct was “Throw it out. We’ll buy another one.”But not for the craftsmen. “Why throw it out. We can repair it” they responded – and proceeded to do the job. The result? Considerable savings across a number of items. Savingtime needed to go and look for ‘new’ products. The satisfaction in knowing that you had contributed in a small way to preserving the planet’s resources.

This is really what remanufacturing is all about. Taking time to maintain and preserve whatyou have rather than going out and buying ‘new’. And this, again, raises questions in one’smind as to whether discarding something always makes sense – or whether it’s just a convenient short term solution.

As millions of people around the world are taking a new approach to these issues, it’s clearthat the foundation for promoting reman has rarely, if ever, been firmer. This edition ofReMaTecNews exemplifies some areas in which remanufacturers can successfully exploit theirskills. There are many others. Make use of them to inspire others to go the reman way. In asmall way, the world might even become a better place.

Few of the millions of airline passengers think of remanu-facturing when they board their aircraft. Nevertheless, aviation is one of the world’s most sophisticated remanu-facturing industries. What happens to valuable

components of retired aircrafts such as Boeing 737, 747, Airbus A300 or A320? What system of checks and balances is used when it comes to remanufacturing aviation components? Derk-Jan van Heerden, Managing Director of the Dutch company AELS (Aircraft End-of-Life Solutions), will give a presentation on remanu-facturing safety critical components within the aviation industry. Derk-Jan van Heerden 33-year old Derk-Jan van Heerden was named “Top40 under Forty” by Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine as one of forty rising stars in the global aerospace and defense industry. His experience in aviation has been almost exclusively centered on end- of-life aircrafts. Having graduated from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, he was named best graduate by the Dutch Royal Aeronautical Society. After a brief period with KLM Engineering & Maintenance, he launched AELS at the age of 26. Today, Van Heerden and his team are assisting aircraft owners world-wide with end-of-life decisions on all aircraft types. Customers have become our competitors. There is an en-tirely different dynamic since the 2008-09 downturns in the transportation sector. Diversification is key as com-petition from customers, OEM’s and Tier 1’s doing has become the norm. There was a time when Ford, GM and Chrysler did their own elec-tronic reman in house prior to shedding their electronic divisions; Visteon, Delphi and Huntsville/Acustar. Whether this service reman was done

out of necessity because of production commit-ments or EOL components it was difficult to give it high priority after the respective division were sold off. When the vehicle builds started to drop significantly, many Tier 1’s started to reman again

to fill in the revenue void from not producing new production parts. By definition, APRA, the Automotive PartsRemanufacturing Association, focuses on theautomotive parts remanufacturing business.That has been the case for more than fiftyyears and it will remain so for the foreseeablefuture. Quite simply, automotive reman is ourraison d’être. Even so, the fact is that anincreasing number of our members areextending their businesses into areas outsideour original, and clearly defined, field. Offhighway, industrial remanufacturing ofgensets and wind power generators are someof them. Likewise, the ‘parts’ to be remanu-factured are set to expand from small units toinclude highly complex installations, some ofthem immobile and installed decentralized.

The idea that remanufacturing opera-tions must take place in an industrial estateunder a solid roof or on a production linewith huge batch sizes will soon no longer bevalid. In consequence we must now acceptthat the industrial approach to remanufactur-ing is solely determined by its adherence togenuinely standardized industrial processes.

Key parametersOutstanding service, state-of-the-art reverseengineering, on-site operations, one pieceflow in production, powerful logistics andshort response time will, in future, be keyparameters for success in remanufacturing.The unique selling proposition of remanufac-tured products will change from ‘Best Valuefor Money’ to ‘saving raw materials.’ In fact,this is already supported by some govern-

ments under the heading of ‘Urban Mining’. New business opportunities will also

provide new challenges for our members. Because the evolution of business itself

is a challenge which APRA as an associationmust support, we have to include specific newactivities in our portfolio. In short, we mustensure that all relevant success factors for ourmembers are supported by us.

In previous times, the aim of most asso-ciations was clear – to provide a platform fornetworking for companies with similar pro-files and common interests. Today one of the

challenges is not only to provide opportuni-ties for networking but to extend such plat-forms so as to create networks of remanufac-turing experts.

Diverse memberships As our membership becomes more diverse,APRA will also have to meet the differentdemands of each member category - one fitfor all is a clear ‘no go’ going forward. If wewish to represent the entire remanufacturingindustry, there is a need to create specificoffers for small as well as for medium-sizedand large companies. We must recognize thatthe requirements of suppliers to remanufac-turers are different than those of enterprisesoperating on an international scale.

Active trade associations offer valuablebenefits for their members. As we head intothe future, we must never forget that thename of APRA with its long history of suc-cessfully supporting the automotive partsremanufacturing industry is a powerful forcein our industry. At the same time we also haveto constantly remind ourselves that we mustadjust our work in accordance with new pri-orities, shifting trends and changing industri-al landscapes.

Meet the Dutch masters at the “New” Rijksmuseum,

The Rijksmuseum (English: State Museum) is

a Dutch national museum dedicated to arts

and history in Amsterdam. The museum is lo-

cated at the Museum Square in the borough

Amsterdam South, close to the Van Gogh

Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam,

and the Concertgebouw. The Rijksmuseum

was reopened by Queen Beatrix after the ten

year renovation, just two months ago in April

2013. The museum will have on display 8,000

objects of art and history, from their total col-

lection of 1 million objects from the years

1200–2000, among which are some master-

pieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johan-

nes Vermeer. The museum also has a small
