Description The project addressed the poor performance of 4,000 students in English and Mathematics in 25 schools in Sambalpur, Odisha, through remedial coaching centres. The project directly benefited students in Classes 8, 9 and 10, 50 government schoolteachers and 50 community teachers. The project aimed to; improve the academic performance of 4,000 students, increase the overall pass percentage in the 25 schools, develop a replicable model of remedial teaching for adoption by the government and other schools, and provide co-scholastic support in spoken English, interpersonal and leadership skills and promoted participation in cultural and sports events. The project was run and managed by the implementing organisation; Agranee Jana Kalyan Anusthan (AJKA). Achievements A total of 242 Spoken English sessions and 178 Soft Skills sessions including leadership, inter-personal and communication skills were organised for 4,200 students in the 25 intervention schools. Block Coordinators and District Resource Group members monitored 764 English and Mathematics classes during 191 visits to intervention schools to ensure that the teaching was organised and students attended the classes. This project helped to form the current Secondary School Readiness Programme (SSRP). The project specifically provided: Capacity building to 50 government schoolteachers and 50 community teachers in 25 schools. The development of a remedial curriculum for English and Mathematics for students in Class 8-10, and modules for school and community teachers’ training.
