Movie Review: Remember the Titans

Together as FriendsReaction Paper
Before watching the movie “Remember the Titans”, I predicted what will happen. For
me, it is a typical story of individuals with differences and in the end they learned to be close to
one another. But the interesting thing of it is how the characters accepted their differences and
how they started to care for each other. I was really excited about watching the movie because it
talks about a real school and a real team with a real story.
In our discussion of general theoretical perspectives in sociological anthropology, one is
the conflict perspective. According to this perspective, there is an arena of inequality that
generates conflict and change. Race is one of the conflicts here in the movie. There is a gap
between black and white players of the team. It is inspirational how the conflict is solved by
Coach Boone and Coach Yoast by setting an example, initiating the socialization of the players
and shaping them not just to be a team but as friends. Also the players need to set aside their
differences and fight common enemies, their opponents. There is also cooperation involved, an
interaction in which individuals work together to achieve a common goal, which is, in the movie,
to defend their school and to win. After every game, their cooperation intensifies for their goal
and eventually it leads to termination of their conflicts.
The story shows happiness and pain, which we experience in real life. The one I love in
the story is the singing of the players. I follow them every time they sing. Also I love how they
won. But bad things happened. Bertier, the star player, is paralyzed in a car accident after
celebrating the victorious game and it was sad that Bertier was killed ten years after. The coaches
and athletes from the team reunite to attend Bertier's funeral, and I’ve been touched by the
ending lines of Sheryl. “People say that it can't work black and white. Here, we make it work
every day. We still have our disagreements, of course, but before we reach for hate, always,
always, we remember the Titans.” We are all humans and all the same, no matter what we look
like. The movie wants us to realize that the color of the skin is not important but the soul itself.
In our society, we can’t avoid having differences, but we can set aside these differences to live
harmoniously with each other. To achieve this goal, we must remember the Titans.
