Read some answers to an online survey about memories and circle the expressions used to talk about remembering.

What triggers memories for you? Words? Objects? Smells? Tastes? Sounds? Music?

Posted 23.5. All of those things, but mainly music. When I’m listening to my car radio and they play an old song, it often makes me think of something in the past. I used to be a big Abba fan so whenever I hear one of their songs, it takes me back to my youth!! From JAN

Posted 23.5. Songs, of course, but most of the time these are only romantic memories … Certain foods often bring back memories of people and places. Whenever I eat spaghetti carbonara, I remember staying overnight at a friend’s house when I was at school. It was the only thing her mother could cook and she made it every time I went to stay. From EVE

Posted 24.5. Certain smells remind me of places I’ve visited or worked in. For example, I worked in a hospital for two years and there was a kind of soap we always used. When I smell that, I remember all my colleagues and the fun that we had. And music, of course. I play in an orchestra so music is very important to me. When I hear some pieces of music, my mind goes back to when and where we played them. From JOHN

Now read the text about P.D. James and complete the table below.

Name Age Activity Further details

For thirty years P.D. James worked as a civil servant in many departments of the Home Offi ce

including the police. She had always wanted to write novels but didn’t begin her fi rst one until her late 30s as she didn’t have much time. She was 40 years old when her fi rst book was published. She wrote a detective story because they are always popular and she thought it would be easier to fi nd a publisher. Since then she has written 19 books. A lot of her stories have also been fi lmed for TV. Her fi rst hero was Adam Dalgliesh, a detective at New Scotland Yard. Later she created Cordelia Grey, a private eye. She has won many writing awards on both sides of the Atlantic.

Work in groups of three. Read about three more people, then ask and answer questions to complete the table.
