The Canadian Society for Yad Vashem is privileged to carry out the annual National Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony on behalf of the government of Canada to commemorate the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and pay tribute to Shoah survivors. Today, it is a special date – the V-E Day, when we mark the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. It is also a very meaningful year, as we celebrate 150th anniversary of Confederation - 150 years of the birth of the Canadian nation. As we honour 150 years of democracy it is our responsibility to cherish the truly Canadian values of social inclusion and respect for human rights.

The theme of the 2017 National Ceremony is “Survivors’ Testimonies”: The Fate of the Individual during the Holocaust”. Individual testimonies enable us to enrich our knowledge of the Shoah, to learn the historical truth, but also shape a better future. We have a rare chance to hear first-hand experiences from the Holocaust and understand the events as they were lived through personal reflection, while survivors are still with us. The Holocaust is not simply a warning from history, its universal lessons showcase the dangers of intolerance. A personal account of the Holocaust is the most powerful way to understand the Shoah, allowing us to learn from the past and to strive to preserve our multi-cultural society.

It is our collective obligation for future generations to learn from survivors testimonies and remember the Shoah in order to prevent its repetition.

“ “Testimonies of Holocaust survivors are not simply an account of the planned and systematic extermination of six million Jews during the Shoah. They give personal perspectives on the events. Survivors’ testimonies allow us to see beyond statistics. Testimonials demonstrate that Shoah victims are not simply numbers and that behind every victim of the Holocaust there is a unique story. “It is not that six million Jews were murdered. Rather there were six million murders, and in each case one Jew was murdered,” said Abel Jacob Herzberg, a survivor of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Testimonies are key sources in Holocaust research and education. First-hand testimonies—diaries, interviews and autobiographies—represent crucial primary source materials on the Holocaust. They help capture the historical truth, verifying the course of events, shedding light to unknown realities and bringing new insights to commonly accepted facts. Testimonies are the most powerful tool against revisionists who deny or minimize the destructive consequences of the Shoah.

Survivors’ stories cover all aspects of the Holocaust: atrocities of war, the courage of those who helped Jews despite the risk to their lives, abdication of personal responsibility to overlook the genocide, attempts to preserve dignity and humanity in inhuman conditions. Survivors’ testimonies also demonstrate the hope that future generations will learn to live in peace.

fOr Over 30 years the canadIan sOcIety fOr yad vashem (csyv) has educated canadIans abOut the hOlOcaust thrOugh educatIOnal and cOmmemOratIve PrOgrams by sharIng the facts, knOwledge and unIversal lessOns Of the shOah (hOlOcaust).

our vital Holocaust education programs teach Canadians about the Holocaust thereby making significant contributions to current and future generations. To name a few:

the csyv ambassadors of change Program brings high school students of varied faiths and cultures from across Canada to meet in ottawa with Holocaust survivors who share their firsthand experiences about the Shoah. The program educates young Canadians to be more tolerant and inclusive in their communities. It is followed by the National Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony.

the csyv holocaust scholarship Program sends Canadian educators to participate in a three-week seminar at the International School of Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem. There they obtain innovative pedagogical tools for teaching about the Holocaust to their students and communities in Canada.

the twinning Program enables young teens to learn about the Holocaust as they reach Bar/Bat Mitzvah, by pairing them with testimonies about child Holocaust victims.

CSYV is also a documentation center – it holds various archival materials such as the stories of Righteous Among the Nations and testimonies of Canadians Holocaust survivors which are available to the public on our website.

The Canadian Society for Yad Vashem is the only organization in Toronto to have a memorial site, located at Earl Bales Park (4169 Bathurst St, Toronto, oN M3H 3P7), specifically focused on the core fundamentals of Holocaust education and commemoration. CSYV is currently developing a new Youth Holocaust Education Program aimed at teaching about the Shoah through the CSYV Holocaust Memorial Site.

In addition, CSYV has direct access to the expertise and resources of Yad Vashem, a world Holocaust centre. CSYV’s numerous educational and commemorative programs bring Yad Vashem’s knowledge and expertise to multicultural Canadian audiences.

la Société canadienne de Yad Vashem a le privilège d’organiser la Cérémonie annuelle de la Journée nationale de commémoration de l’Holocauste au nom du gouvernement du Canada pour commémorer les six millions de victimes juives de l’Holocauste et rendre hommage aux survivants de la Shoah. Il s’agit d’une journée spéciale, le 8 mai, qui marque la capitulation sans condition de l’Allemagne nazie annonçant ainsi la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale en Europe. Il s’agit également d’une année très spéciale où l’on célèbre le 150e anniversaire de la Confédération - les 150 ans de la naissance de la nation canadienne. Alors qu’on souligne 150 ans de démocratie, il est de notre responsabilité de préserver les véritables valeurs canadiennes définies par l’inclusion sociale et le respect des droits humains.

Cette année, le thème de la cérémonie est le suivant : “ Témoignages de survivants: le destin de l’individu durant l’Holocauste’’. les témoignages individuels nous permettent d’enrichir notre connaissance de la Shoah, d’apprendre la vérité historique, mais aussi de bâtir un avenir meilleur. Nous avons la chance unique d’entendre des récits de première main sur l’Holocauste et de comprendre les événements tels qu’ils ont été perçus personnellement puisque les survivants sont encore parmi nous. l’Holocauste est non seulement un avertissement du passé mais aussi, par ses leçons universelles, un exemple des dangers de l’intolérance. un récit personnel de l’Holocauste est le moyen le plus puissant pour comprendre la Shoah. Il nous permet de tirer les leçons du passé pour s’efforcer de protéger notre société multiculturelle.

Il s’agit de notre obligation collective devant les générations futures d’apprendre des témoignages des survivants et de se souvenir de la Shoah pour empêcher que de tels évènements se reproduisent.

“ “les témoignages des rescapés de l’Holocauste ne sont pas qu’un simple compte-rendu de l’extermination planifiée et systématique de six millions de Juifs durant la Shoah. Ils donnent des perspectives personnelles sur ces évènements. les récits des survivants nous permettent de voir au-delà des statistiques. Ils démontrent que les victimes de la Shoah ne sont pas que des chiffres et que derrière chaque victime de l’Holocauste se trouve une histoire unique. “Ce n’est pas que six millions de Juifs ont été assassinés. Mais plutôt, il y a eu six millions de meurtres, et dans chacun d’entre eux un Juif a été tué,” explique Abel Jacob Herzberg, un survivant du camp de concentration de Bergen-Belsen.

les témoignages sont des éléments clés dans la recherche et l’éducation sur l’Holocauste. les rapports directs, qu’il s’agisse de journaux intimes, d’entrevues ou d’autobiographies, représentent une matière première cruciale sur le sujet. Ils aident à capturer la vérité historique, confirmant le déroulement des évènements, faisant la lumière sur des réalités méconnues et apportant une nouvelle compréhension de faits communément admis. les témoignages sont les outils les plus puissants contre les révisionnistes qui renient ou minimisent les conséquences destructrices de la Shoah.

les récits des survivants couvrent tous les aspects de l’Holocauste: les atrocités de la guerre, le courage de ceux qui sont venus à l’aide des Juifs malgré le risque pour leur propre vie, l’abdication de la responsabilité personnelle pour fermer les yeux sur le génocide, la volonté de conserver dignité et humanité dans des conditions inhumaines. Ces témoignages portent aussi l’espoir que les générations futures apprendront à vivre en paix.

dePuIs Plus de 30 ans, les PrOgrammes de la sOcIété canadIenne de yad vashem (scyv) servent À sensIbIlIser les canadIens À l’égard de l’hOlOcauste en Partageant les cOnnaIssances et les leçOns unIverselles de la shOah (hOlOcauste).

Nos programmes éducatifs enseignent aux Canadiens ce qu’est l’Holocauste et par ce fait, apportent une contribution importante aux générations actuelles et futures. Quelques exemples de programmes :

les ambassadeurs du changement est un programme qui rassemble, dans la capitale nationale, des survivants de l’Holocauste avec des élèves d’écoles secondaires provenant de tout le pays. Pendant cette rencontre, les survivants de la Shoah partagent avec les élèves, appartenant à diverses religions et cultures, leurs expériences de première main sur la Shoah. le programme enseigne aux jeunes Canadiens à être plus tolérants et plus inclusifs dans leurs communautés. Il est suivi de la Cérémonie nationale de la journée commémorative de l’Holocauste.

le Programme de bourses d’études sur l’holocauste envoie les enseignants canadiens pour participer à un séminaire de trois semaines à l’École internationale pour l’enseignement de la Shoah à Yad Vashem, où ils obtiennent des outils pédagogiques innovants pour enseigner l’Holocauste à leurs étudiants et à leurs communautés au Canada.

le Programme de jumelage permet aux jeunes qui vont célébrer leur Bar/Bat Mitzvah d’en apprendre davantage sur l’Holocauste en les jumelant à une personne qui a été victime de l’Holocauste lorsqu’il était enfant.

la Société canadienne de Yad Vashem est également un centre de documentation – ses archives contiennent des histoires uniques des Justes parmi les nations et des témoignages de survivants canadiens de l’Holocauste. Ces documents sont disponibles au public et accessibles sur notre site internet.

la Société canadienne de Yad Vashem est la seule organisation à Toronto à avoir un lieu commémoratif axé spécifiquement sur les fondements de l’éducation et de la commémoration de l’Holocauste. Cet endroit est situé au parc Earl Bales (4169, rue Bathurst, Toronto, oN M3H 3P7). Nous sommes présentement en train de développer un tout nouveau programme éducatif pour la jeunesse visant à enseigner la Shoah à travers notre lieu commémoratif.

De plus, la Société canadienne de Yad Vashem est la seule organisation à avoir un accès direct à l’expertise et aux ressources de Yad Vashem, un centre international sur l’Holocauste. Nos nombreux programmes éducatifs et commémoratifs apportent à la fois la connaissance et l’expertise de Yad Vashem au public multiculturel canadien.
