• Creating a Multi-Vendor Interoperable Solution is inherently more difficult than creating a Single-Vendor Book-ended Solution
• How do we do it?

The OpenRPD Software Packages Can Also Help
• OpenRPD software modules are a subset of an RPD’s software suite
– Example OpenRPD modules include CLI, GCP, DEPI, UEPI, HAL, L2TPv3
– Vendors can choose to use all, some, or none of these modules to help them expedite their development process & help drive towards an interoperable solution
– Other modules (not used from the OpenRPD Software Library) can be either developed in-house or licensed from third-party suppliers

The Spec’s Also Call For The Use of Open-Source & Well-Defined Standards-based Protocols… These Help With Interoperability
• L2TPv3 for transport of packets between the CCAP Core and the Remote PHY Node• TCP for Generic Control Protocol (GCP) transport• 802.1x for Authentication of RPDs for Secure Network Access at Leaf Switches• IKEv2 for Mutual Authentication Key Exchange• IPsec for Authenticated Communication between the Remote PHY Node & the CCAP Core• SSH for Secure Direct Access to RPDs• Much was modeled after the existing Cable Modem process:
– TFTP– DHCP (with some changes… ex: Option 61 for the Available CCAP Core List)– TOD– X.509 Certificates for Authentication– Secure Software Downloads

Where the Rubber Meets the Road…Remote PHY Interoperability Testing• The basic goal is to help different vendors experiment with one another to identify & fix interoperability
issues (bugs)• Bugs can be mistakes… but more often they are caused by slightly different interpretations of the
specification• Many activities are occurring:
– CableLabs® Interops• Periodic testing activities in Denver (started in December 2016)• Testing activity in Ghent (May 2017)
– CableLabs® Dry Runs• First ATP Dry Run are coming in November
– CableLabs Qualification Testing• Coming in 4Q17
– Operator-driven Activities at multiple MSOs– Vendor-driven Activities at multiple Vendors
• Supporting lots of different vendors & lots of different architectural variants is not easy…• BUT… All vendors & MSOs & CableLabs participants seem to be cooperating and are working hard to help
expedite true interoperability…• Good progress has been made with many vendors showing various levels of interoperability between one
another in different areas of focus… • More to come... Success is imminent

• Remote PHY requires several sub-systems to be coordinated– (CCAP Core, RPD Node, Fanout Network, 1588 Grandmaster Clock,
VoD Server, Bcast Server, OOB Systems, Monitoring Tools)
• The sub-systems are typically connected via Ethernet links in a Converged Interconnection Network
• Remote PHY is arriving !!!
• Interoperable Remote PHY is on its way…assisted by on-going specs & testing !!!
