Renaissance
• Renaissance = Rebirth
• Rebirth of what?– Classical ideas and believes
• Greek & Roman culture
– Art & Learning– Life – new ideas
Why Italy?
• City-States: no economic crisis
• Classical traditions: ruins and reminders
• Traded with Muslims and Byzantium
Humanism
• Intellectual movement focusing on the achievements and potential of humanity
• Often not concerned with Christian teachings
• Studied the ancients: history, literature, and philosophy = humanities
In practice?
• Life should be fulfilling
• See the beauty in individual achievements
• Well-rounded = Renaissance Man– Music, poetry, literature, engineering,
inventing, history, art & sculpture– Think da Vinci

• Drives literacy
– Books are still expensive though…
