    Hurricane Micheal Three Month Report

    November 2018 - January 2019

  • Hurricane Michael Three Month Report

On October 10, 2018, Hurricane Michael made landfall in Bay County, Florida, devastating the communities of Mexico Beach, Callaway, Springfield, Parker, and the greater Panama City area. The third strongest storm to strike the contiguous United States, ReNew of Northwest Florida, a Florida Panhandle not-for-profit organization, has responded to needs resulting from the storm. This report is a summary of Renew’s actions in the first three months of the recovery.

    November, 2018

    ‣ Hired a full-time field director to manage “on the ground”

operations. ‣ Organized and led the Wewahitchka Halloween Festival, feeding

more than 800 people including 450 children. ‣ Conducted area-wide survey from the Hathaway Bridge in the west

to Apalachicola in the east; the Gulf of Mexico waterline in the south to Marianna in the north.

    ‣ Attempted initial partnerships in the community of Mexico Beach, but projects proved unsustainable due to massive destruction of the municipality’s infrastructure.

    ‣ Assisted the Lynn Haven relief station in partnership with Panhandle Hope.

    ‣ Targeted the community of Parker (and surrounding area) as major service area going forward.

    December, 2018

    ‣ Partnered with the Free Spirit Community Church to remove storm

debris and clean up building damage (more than 10,000 square feet).

    ‣ Led multiple tours of the hurricane-damaged area for prospective donors and partners.

    ‣ Provided and delivered 7,000 cubic feet (equivalent to two tractor trailers) of supplies/aid to affected areas including building supplies, Christmas gifts, food, diapers, etc.

    ‣ Assessed damage to First Baptist Church of Calloway; destruction was far too extensive for intervention by ReNew, but individual assistance to the church’s parishioners begun.

    ‣ Partnership established with the Shady Grove United Methodist Church, Winston Salem, NC.

    ‣ Provided short term and intermediate housing for multiple families
