R enewal is happening at many levels, including for some of AVA’s most valued staff. As many of you would know, this is Mark Thornley’s last AVJ as Managing Editor as he has accepted a position with one of Australia’s leading medical magazines. Mark has upgraded the presentation of the AVJ while at the same time has negotiated reduced costs for production. His main role was to make Vetlife a reality, and while the magazine’s life was short, many members found this title a valuable addition to AVA publications. Jennifer Docherty is making a very positive career move to join a large national association. Jen has transformed the membership services section, commencing with the database and expanding the scope of communication services to include eline for members, students, industry and employed veterinarians. She has also initiated member surveys so that the Board and staff have timely feedback. Eddie Ripard will further develop his career by joining an industry association as its Marketing and Communications Manager. Eddie’s work with the AVA has been invaluable: he drove changes in the membership area prior to Jennifer’s arrival, has substantially increased sponsorship, has grown affinity programs and has tirelessly sought to evaluate current member benefits. Eddie has also been AVA’s media person and many of you will have met him in that capacity. Associations such as the AVA offer real opportunities to enthusiastic staff, however in order to continue their careers, there comes a time when they do move on and Wentworth HR inform me that the industry average is about two years. So thanks to Mark, Jen and Eddie - we have all been beneficiaries of your time with the AVA. There will be some changes to the format of the AVJ, and I refer members to the editorial in this edition for more detail of your AVJ in 2006. There will also be some changes in AVA staffing as we reflect on gains made over the past three years and the importance of giving members what they tell us they want, namely that AVA be more visible and that there be a strong emphasis on supporting continuing education.
