FACT SHEET- THAILAND

Background:-

A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been colonized by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to the establishment of a constitutional monarchy. After the Japanese invaded Thailand in 1941, the government split into a pro-Japan faction and a pro-Ally faction backed by the King. Following the war, Thailand became a US treaty ally in 1954 after sending troops to Korea and later fighting alongside the US in Vietnam. Thailand since 2005 has experienced several rounds of political turmoil including a military coup in 2006 that ousted then Prime Minister THAKSIN Chinnawat, followed by large-scale street protests by competing political factions in 2008, 2009, and 2010. THAKSIN's youngest sister, YINGLAK Chinnawat, in 2011 led the Puea Thai Party to an electoral win and assumed control of the government. In early May 2014, after months of large-scale anti-government protests in Bangkok beginning in November 2013, YINGLAK was removed from office by the Constitutional Court and in late May 2014 the Royal Thai Army, led by Royal Thai Army Gen. PRAYUT Chan-ocha, staged a coup against the caretaker government. PRAYUT was appointed prime minister in August 2014. PRAYUT also serves as the head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), a military-affiliated body that oversees the interim government. This body created several interim institutions to promote reform and draft a new constitution, which was passed in a national referendum in August 2016. In late 2017, PRAYUT announced elections would be held by November 2018; he has subsequently suggested they might occur in February 2019. As of mid-December 2018, a previoulsy held ban on campaigning and political activity has been lifted and per parliamentary laws, an election must be held within 150 days. King PHUMIPHON Adunyadet passed away in October 2016 after 70 years on the throne; his only son, WACHIRALONGKON Bodinthrathepphayawarangkun, ascended the throne in December 2016. He signed the new constitution in April 2017. Thailand has also experienced violence associated with the ethno-nationalist insurgency in its southern Malay-Muslim majority provinces. Since January 2004, thousands have been killed and wounded in the insurgency.

National Flag:- The flag of the Kingdom of Thailand shows five horizontal stripes in the colours red, white, blue, white and red, with the central blue stripe being twice as wide as each of the other four. The design was adopted on 28 September 1917, according to the royal decree issued by Rama VI that year.

Emblem of Thailand:

The national emblem of Thailand is called the Phra Khrut Pha. The Garuda was officially adopted as the national emblem by King Vajiravudh in 1911. However, the mythical creature had been used as a symbol of royalty in Thailand for centuries National Anthem:- The Thai National Anthem (Thai: เพลงชาตไิทย, romanized: Phleng chāt Thai) is the title of Thailand's national anthem which was adopted on 10 December 1939. The melody was composed by Phra Chenduriyang (Peter Veit) and the words are by Luang Saranupraphan. Phleng chāt (Thai: เพลงชาต)ิ, literally meaning "national anthem", is a general term for a national anthem. This term is also used to refer to this specific song. Country Name:- (1851–1868) reads SPPM (Somdet Phra Poramenthra Maha) Mongkut Rex Siamensium (Mongkut King of the Siamese), giving the name "Siam" official status until 24 June 1939 when it was changed to Thailand. Thailand was renamed to Siam from 1946 to 1948, after which it again reverted toThailand. Capital: Bangkok is the capital and most populous city of Thailand. ECONOMY - OVERVIEW

Thailand is a relatively well-developed infrastructure, a free-enterprise economy, and generally pro-investment policies, Thailand is highly dependent on international trade, with exports accounting for about two -thirds of GDP. Thailand’s exports include electronics, agricultural commodities, automobiles and parts, and processed foods. The industry and service sectors produce about 90% of GDP. The agricultural sector, comprised mostly of small -scale farms, contributes only 10% of GDP but employs about one-third of the labor force. Thailand has attracted an estimated 3.0-4.5 million migrant workers, mostly from neighboring countries.

Over the last few decades, Thailand has reduced poverty substantially. In 2013, the Thai Government implemented a nationwide 300 baht (roughly $10) per day minimum wage policy and deployed new tax reforms designed to lower rates on middle-income earners.

Thailand’s economy is recovering from slow growth during the years since the 2014 coup. Thailand’s economic fundamentals are sound, with low inflation, low unemployment, and reasonable public and external debt levels. Tourism and government spending - mostly on infrastructure and short-term stimulus measures– have helped to boost the economy, and The Bank of Thailand has been supportive, with several interest rate reductions.

Over the longer-term, household debt levels, political uncertainty, and an aging population pose risks to growth. BILATERAL RELATIONS BETWEEN INDIA AND THAILAND Diplomatic relations between India and Thailand were established in 1947, soon after India gained independence. India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand along the Andaman Sea. The past few years since 2001 have witnessed growing warmth, increasing economic and commercial links, exchange of high-level visits on both sides, and the signing of a large number of Agreements leading to a further intensification of relations. Thailand and India are cooperating in various multilateral fora like India's dialogue partnership with ASEAN, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and the East Asia Summit, the sub-regional grouping BIMSTEC involving Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan, and trilateral transport linkages with Thailand, Myanmar and India. India is a member of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) initiated by Thailand in 2002 and of the Mekong–Ganga Cooperation (MGC), a group of six countries.

Thai embassy in India is located in New Delhi, with three consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. India holds its embassy in Bangkok and one consulate in Chiang Mai.

Thailand is the second largest economy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). It is an upper middle income country with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of US$ 504.9 billion in 2018.

Two-way trade in 2018 totalled US $ 12.46 billion, with about US $7.60 billion in Thai exports to India and US $ 4.86 billion in Indian exports to Thailand. In the ASEAN region, Thailand ranks as India’s 5th largest trading partner after Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia.

The fast growing Indian market remains attractive for Thai investors, given the vast opportunities available in infrastructure sector, tourism and retail industries. India continues to remain an interesting market for export of goods from Thailand. Currently, Thai goods have benefited from tax reduction under ASEAN-India FTA in Goods, which came into effect from 01 January, 2010 and resulted to the flow of more goods into Indian market.

Thailand views India as the gateway to South Asia and beyond. As a result of the reduced tariff rates and new initiatives adopted by both the countries, trade between two countries increased manifold in recent years. Bilateral Trade has multiplied eight times since 2000 to reach US$ 12.46 billion in 2018. Trade figures between the two countries for the last five years are as under:

Economic partnership:- Thai commercial enterprises should focus on expanding economic partnership with India. The Indian economy is expanding at a rapid pace of 7.5% a year, making it the fastest growing major economy in the world. This has been possible due to proactive and innovative business-friendly policies like Make in India, Skill India, Smart Cities, Digital India and others. The Indian government’s effort, in the words of PM Modi, is to “replace red tape with red carpet.” This has paid rich dividends with an over 40% increase in inflow of foreign investments into India in recent years.

New Delhi and Bangkok need to further expand their strategic, security, defence, and economic cooperation given the geostrategic challenges as well as huge untapped potential. Both sides should invest the necessary energy, focus, and political capital in the relationship so that it can prosper rapidly to the advantage of people of the two countries as well as security, peace, and prosperity in the region. The good news is that both Thai and Indian leaders are aware of the threats and impediments ahead and are determined to overcome them. They are also conscious of the huge existing opportunities and strengths and are resolute to harness them to mutual benefit and advantage.

AT A GLANCE BUYER SELLER MEET THAILAND – 2019

As an export promotion measure, CHEMEXCIL in co-ordination with Embassy of India in Bangkok, Thailand had organized a Buyer Seller Meet at Hotel PULLMAN BANGKOK GRANDE SUKHUMVIT, 30 SUKHUMVIT 21 (ASOKE) ROAD, BANGKOK 10110 THAILAND on 1st of July, 2019. Total 27 member-exporters from CHEMEXCIL and around 68 importers / buyers of Chemicals / Dyes and Cosmetic sectors attend the above event.

The BSM was inaugurated by H.E. Mrs. Suchitra Durai - Ambassador of the Republic of India to Thailand. The event was also attended by Mrs. Alpana Dubey, Deputy Chief of Mission and Deputy PR to UNESCAP, Mr. Khimisra - Advisor Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) Chemical Club of Thailand (TBC), Ms. Petcharat Eksangkul, Chairperson- Chemical Industry Club - FTI, Mr. Ravi Sehgal - President, India-Thai Chamber of Commerce all of whom had urged the Thai companies to look at a new and fast growing India.

In the above event, the welcome address was given by Mr. Ajay Kadakia, Chairman - CHEMEXCIL. In his address, he introduced CHEMEXCIL and briefed its export performance and promotional activities.

In his inaugural Address, the H.E. Mrs. Suchitra Durai - Ambassador of the Republic of India to Thailand, invited the Thai companies to look at opportunities for further engagement with India. She briefed about the Government of India’s initiative ‘Make in India' program with the aim to promote manufacturing in India. She delivered that the program includes major new initiatives designed to facilitate investment, foster innovation, protect intellectual property, and build best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure.

Mr. S.G Bharadi, Executive Director – CHEMEXCIL was given detailed PPT presentation about Chemexcil and Indian Chemical Industry with export statistics of all our products and also invite Thailand businessman to come to India in the upcoming CAPINDIA Show from 2nd – 4th December, 2019 at Mumbai, India.

Other dignitaries who attended and given brief speeches were Mr Mr. Khimisra- Advisor Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) Chemical Club of Thailand (TBC), Ms. Petcharat Eksangkul, Chairperson - Chemical Industry Club - FTI, Mr. Ravi Sehgal - President, India-Thai Chamber of Commerce, who urged Thai companies to look at a new and fast growing India.

Mr. Anil Singh - Attaché (ESCAP/Com) and Mr. Manoranjan Sahu Attache (Economic & Commerce), Embassy of India, Bangkok, Thailand had also attended and co-ordinated CHEMEXCIL to organise the event. Moreover, Embassy of India, Bangkok, Thailand had provided tremendous support regarding the telemarketing service for mobilizes Buyers/ importers of this event.

For wide publicity of the event, CHEMEXCIL has given an advertisement in local news paper in Thai language in “Krungthep Turakij” newspaper as per the directive of the Embassy.
