15th International Young Scientists Conference “Optics & High

Technology Material Science SPO 2014”

15th International Young Scientists Conference “Optics and High Technology Material Science -

SPO2014” was organized 23-26 October 2014. As usual, the conference was organized by

undergraduate and graduate students, current members of OSA, SPIE and EOS student

chapters/club. Event was held at Faculty of Physics, Taras Shevchenko National University of

Kyiv (Ukraine).

As usual this year conference brought together scientists from different countries to find new

colleagues, share experience and demonstrate results of the latest researches in the field of

optics and high technology material science. This year the meeting took another kind of format.

Projects and researches of young pre-university students were included in the technical

program. Young people showed high level of interest in optics and photonics and good

knowledge of their scientific themes despite the age (15-18 years old). The conference program

included the following sections: physics of condensed matter and spectroscopy; laser physics

and modern optoelectronics; applied optics and engineering; biomedical optics and sensors

technology.

This year conference was highly standard organized. SPIE members and other students of our

Chair of Optics took active part in SPO conference’s organizing as usual. That specialty made

SPO outstanding from all other scientific events in Ukraine. The idea to provide the part of such

a meeting for younger generation was well-accepted by all participants. We hope this initiative

would be supported in the future by different universities in Ukraine.

SPO 2014 was attended by scientists from Japan, United Kingdom, Ireland and Ukraine of

course. The ideas in presented reports were expressed by both famous experts in optics and

photonics and young scientists including students.

This year all young scientists (undergraduate/graduate students) got possibility to be awarded

for the best presentation. Conference’s program committee chose the best five participants and

awarded them with award diploma and scientific books.

Students who have successfully presented their scientific researches and were awarded for the

best oral presentations:

1. MSc. student Roman Holubenko “Mechanisms of photovoltage generation in GaAs-based

p-n junctions with InGaAs quantum wires”.

2. MSc. student Victor Borysiuk “Studies of boron- and nitrogen-doped single-walled carbon

nanotubes as potential hydrogen halide molecules HX (X = F, CL, Br) sensors”.

3. PhD. student Shynkarenko Yevhen “Issues of transient absorption measurements in pico-

and femtosecond time domain of gold nanospheres and nanorods”.

Students who have successfully presented their scientific researches and were awarded for the

best poster presentations:

1. Undergraduate student Mariia Gryzlova “Photovoltage spectroscopy and transient of

InAs/GaAs p-i-n structure”.

2. PhD student Inna Kuchugura “Method of biofocal diffractive lenses designing”

All organizers expected that participation in “Best student presentation award” would motivate

young scientists to make additional efforts during their work under presentations. SPIE Chapter

officers always were interested in popularization paper/presentation awards among students

and they continue to think so. We used this possibility as a promotional illustration for 1st year

BSc. Program students. All of them prepared poster presentation of their researches made at

school (before entering the university).

The youngest conference participants (pre-college students whom studies at ukrainian

secondary schools) had a possibility to take part in leadership and scientific workshops.

Attendances got all information about activities of Chair of Optics and international professional

societies associated to optics (SPIE, OSA, EOS) at the Leadership workshop. During scientific

workshop pre-college students received additional information about optical phenomena that

usually are not studied in secondary schools. There were organized four lectures which covered

following themes: «Optical illusions», «Laser and its application», «Biomedical optics», «Optics:

present and future». All attendances received certificate of participation.

Undergraduate/graduate students also took part at workshop “Study in Japan: Master’s and

PhD programs” where invited lecturer prof. Toru Aoki (Shizuoka University, Japan)

demonstrated all benefits and problems of studying at Master’s and PhD programs at Shizuoka

University (Hamamatsu, Japan) for Ukrainian students.

Optics educational kit

“Optics educational kit” was created and designed by TSNUK SPIE Student chapter

members.

“Optics educational kit” is orientated on school students. Its main idea is to explain

relationship between difficult formulas and daily life. Educational kit motivates students to

become involved to optics because it demonstrates abstract optical phenomena.

In the basis of these experiments we laid the fundamental laws of physical optics: light

refraction, interference phenomena, diffraction and total internal reflection, polarization and

luminescence. The most of chosen materials are available in all countries. Every kit consists of

brochure, video-disk and next equipment:

Laser pointer

Experiments were created for children under K-12 program, their parents and also for

school teachers that’s why we wrote description brochure how to use it. Student chapter

members gave a master class at eight Ukrainian schools where we explained the leading role of

optics and photonics in modern technological progress. All eight schools received those kits as a

gift for classroom demonstration. It is expected to perform general physics lessons at those

secondary schools more efficient for children. Using educational kit is a good opportunity to

form students' well-grounded knowledgebase and show the importance of scientific

phenomena.

Chapter’s officers created video disk. All six optical phenomena where filmed in details

http://youtu.be/YbkVngFccJ0 (available on chapter’s video channel) everyone interested can

watch experiments and try to made them. In additional we made video – film “Second-

Harmonic Generation Phenomena in "Green" Laser Pointer”. http://youtu.be/MLHzNJHjXHM

(available on chapter’s video channel). It’s a modern product permitting to indicate faraway

objects. The idea of the video is to show the interior construction of the pointer to the

audience. We want to describe the elements the pointer consists of and demonstrate product’s

optical scheme. We sew up the frame of the pointer. We separated gradually different optical

elements and described their importance. In fact we saw the edge of the gain media and the

mirror deposed on it.

Khet 2.0 laser chess game competition

This year student chapter started to increase students' scientific interest with Khet 2.0

laser chess game. During two months students practiced in new logic game. We bought three

Khet 2.0 games. On May 2014 the championship were provided between students involved in

physics at our university. This event was devoted to the Year of Light 2015.

Khet 2.0 laser chess winners: Taras Hanulia, Mykola Melnichenko, Andrii Shcherbakov.

After championship Pizza party was provided. During party 3 winners were awarded by

certificates and prizes.

Annual Chapter party

It is a tradition to organize an annual Chapter meeting at the end of May. Year 2015

wasn’t an exception. Almost all Chapter members attended that event. We summarized

all the provided activities during last year, shared minds about the future of the Chapter,

its development and next projects. We sincerely welcomed our new Chapter members

and expect for their own professional development and future active participation in SPIE

projects. A traditional speech was announced by our Advisor prof. Leonid V. Poperenko.

He thanked all members for their participation in Chapter activities, noticed the

importance of students’ motivation for their future. He also thanked Chapter Officers for

the responsibility and regular attracting of new students to SPIE and Chapter activities.

The party cannot be provided without pizza so the formal part was finished by a few

toasts and pizzas.
