Grade IX

Old age is a time when we need the love and care of our loved ones most. However, some old people are put in homes for the aged and are conveniently forgotten by their children.

As part of community service, the school organized a trip to an old age home to sensitize the students of grade IX to the needs of old people.

On 12th September ’15 grade IX B and C visited Sahjeevan, an old age home which is in Bhukum near Manas Lake. The students left by bus at 10:00 a.m. and returned at 12:00 noon.

The students had taken thank you cards, origami toys and posters and fruits to distribute. They had also prepared an entertainment programme.

The students spent more than two hours with the inmates and interacted with them. The teachers had prepared a questionnaire and the children asked questions to the inmates pertaining to their past life and about their lifestyle and daily routine.

They were overwhelmed with what they saw .They also realized how helpless and vulnerable one can be when there is no one around to look after us.

After the conversation with them, the students tried to entertain them by telling jokes, singing and showing them a few dance steps.

When it was time to leave the students left the home with a heavy heart and a promise to return and meet the elderly people when ever they had time. It was touching to see many of them touching their feet and give them a hug before leaving.

They noted down their phone numbers and assured them that they would call them up. Many of the students had tears in their eyes and some were openly sobbing.

It was a great learning experience for the students, and on the return journey each one was recounting some anecdote or the other about the aajji and ajoba they had interacted with and the common thread in the conversation was that all the elderly people were from the affluent class ,all highly educated and well placed in society. With the result that all promised how they would look after their own parents and grand parents.

After visiting the old age home, they came to understand the value of love and help towards elderly people.
