    RAIN did little to dampen spirits at the May Fairat Southgate Green on Bank Holiday Monday.

    The 34th annual event, organised by ChristChurch Southgate in The Green, raised moneyfor three charities.

    This is the churchs 150th year and 6,000 wasraised for The London Centre for Children withCerebral Palsy, the Brain Tumour Researchcampaign and the churchs anniversary fund.

    Stalls sold books, plants and jewellery and theHatters Explorer Scouts Unit ran a barbecue. Jazzmusic rang through the air as well as a serenade ofolde English madrigals sung by the church choir.

    Christiana During, the outgoing mayor ofEnfield, was among the visitors and crownedAlexandra Rogers as the May Queen.

    She also presented garlands to her attendantsAmelia Marriott and Imogen Morris.

    Organising committee member Phillip Dawsonsaid: We are grateful to everyone who has beeninvolved in making the fair happen, in particularthe Highlands and Southgate Squadron AirTraining Corp for providing many volunteers andEnfield Council for closing The Green, allowingthe return of the popular miniature railway.

    Father Peter Jackson, who presented prizes tothe winners of the childrens art competition,

    said: Raising as much for charity as last yearw ill b e a m a gn if ice n t a c h ie v em e n t a n d demonstrates the generosity of our community.

    What a wonderful way to mark the start ofour 150th anniversary celebrations.

    The events continue with a flower festival andconcert by the church choir at 7.30pm on FridayMay 18. The church will be open for morningand afternoon viewing throughout the weekend

    and a concert featuring Liz PTheodore and Stephen Wilder ollowing day at 8pm.

    Boost for churc150th anniversa

    GOLFERS have a new challenge on their

    hands at the 18th green of the Bush HillPark club.

    Former teacher David Dickinson has setclub members a mathematical task, testingtheir knowledge of angles and curves byredesigning the green at the club in BushHill, Enfield.

    The first candidates tried to solve the

    problem at the clubs charity day on Bank

    Holiday Monday, raising 10,000 forMacmillan Nurses and the Prostate CancerCharity in the process.

    Mr Dickinson, who used to be head ofmaths at Enfield Grammar School,admitted that the new green was likely toprovide pain as well as pleasure to golfersfor many years to come.
