National Workshop on Antenna Modeling using HFSS and

its Applications (AMHA-2012)

Introduction:

The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering of Narula Institute of

Technology under the patronage of JIS group organized a two-day workshop on ”Antenna

Modeling Using HFSS & its Applications” in industrial collaboration with ANSYS on 22nd

-

23rd

June 2012, where the participants (Faculty, Research Scholar, Technical Assistant and

Student) learned different design aspects of antenna modeling using HFSS software.

The purpose of this workshop was to get benefit from shared knowledge about antenna,

microwave filter design with the historical background. The workshop was a forum for the

exchange of information on the progress of research and development in innovative antenna

technology. The focus made on to acquire knowledge about applications of advanced artificial

materials to the antenna design and to create concrete foundation for further implementation of

Communication Devices using HFSS software by bringing together the participants and

industrial experts to provide a platform to acquaint & share new ideas in the field.

Objectives of the workshop:

The objectives in mounting this workshop are threefold:

Awareness of the value and importance of effective and efficient communication by

antenna.

Confident and better skilled participants able and willing to commit to the development

of antenna modeling and plans within their own institutions and in partnership with

others, using HFSS software.

Enhanced networking and collaboration among participating institutions.

Inaugural Address:

The program was glorified by the kind presence of Prof. (Dr.) Asit Guha, Director of JIS

group; Prof. U.S. Mukherjee;Assistant Director of JIS group; Prof. (Dr.) P.K.Banerjee,Advisor

of JIS group; Prof.(Dr.) J.K.Das, Principal of NIT; Dr. A.K.Mallick, Professor ECE Dept.;

Dr.J.Das, Professor ECE Dept; Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Professor, Dept. of ECE, Jadavpur

University.

Key note address was given by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Professor, Dept. of ETCE, Jadavpur

University on “Microwave Multiplex Light wave System: A Flavor of Microwave Photonics”.

Plenary lecture was given by Dr. Debotosh Guha, Professor, Institute of Radio Physics and

Electronics, University of Calcutta on historical background of antenna development.

Interactive Hands On:

The Hands on session was performed in two laboratories (316C & 316G). This session

was continued around 8 hours in two days. Mr. Shrinivas Bhat & Mr. Sarat C, experts from

ENTUPLE Technologies lead the participants to design different model on HFSS. Its mainly

focused on the following topics:

1.The rectangular Patch antenna:

The objective of this model was to show, how to create, simulate and analyze a micro-strip

Patch antenna at resonating frequency of 7.5 GHz.

2. Magic Tee:

The example was intended to show how to create, simulate and analyze a Magic Tee, which is

commonly used in microwave devices, using the Ansoft HFSS Design Environment.

3.Bandpass Filter:

The model was designed to show how to create, simulate and analyze a bandpass filter at center

frequency 1.50 GHz & bandwidth 1 GHz.

All the participants actively participated in this event, which includes the Hands on session too.

They all interacted and exchanged their views with the experts, which makes the program

successful.
