Bea Garner and Shirley Dearfield made a pact in early March to walk two to three miles every other day. When they set a goal of walking 100 miles, their family members scoffed and promised a reward if this happened. The women have now walked more than 180 miles and “are still counting.”
Bea says they usually walk in late afternoon after their “long day of work.” They observed the flowering trees in spring and are now battling the heat wave and look forward to the fall foliage. They comment that the beauty of our 120-acre campus is “overwhelming.” Bea has taken numerous photos of the flowering trees and Shirley of the animals and birds.
The Garners and Dearfields, who moved to Hunter Glen fourth floor in July 2005, were among the original residents of the building. Other first residents who continue to live there are Beth and Frank Fellows and Jo and Allen Mattingly. Bea remembers enjoying hearing Frank play the piano. The women agree that Allen has kept his congenial demeanor.
The neighbors first bonded as they gathered in the hallway after Aber Dearfield burned toast and the fire department arrived in response to the smoke. Bea and Shirley met Sue Aiken and the three decided “we are not living in an old folks’ home. We need to shake it up!”
Bea and Clark, and Shirley and Aber have
done exotic (and not so exotic) travel together, attended family events, and organized many social gatherings. One of their New Year’s Eve parties were accidentally visited by security and they were told to “have a good time!” Both women participated in a calendar featuring Riderwood women in “playful poses” that raised $28,000 for the Benevolent Care Fund.
Many of the original residents of Hunter
Glen remember vacationing at the Dearfields’ Ocean City home with memories of swimming, sitting on the balcony overlooking the ocean with a glass of wine and enjoying the camaraderie of cooking in the kitchen.
Shirley comments, “Who would think that two old ladies could do this?” Bea adds “We are committed to continue walking until this lurking menace is over.”

Riderwood Dining Services has recently been using some compostable food containers from a company called ECO Products. They have embossed printing on the inside, but have no recycling triangle, or they are clear plastic cups. Environmentally conscious residents are confused about what to do with them.
If you Google “Are compostable food containers recyclable?”, Google’s featured snippet says: “Do not put compostables into your recycling! They are not recyclable and will contaminate the recycling process.”
ECO Products uses Ingeo® plastics, which are corn-derived polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers. Such containers are neither “paper” nor “plastic” for recycling purposes at the present time. A commercial composting facility for composting such plastics is not currently available. The only other option is to
throw them in the trash, so as not to contaminate the recycling stream.
The Erickson Living corporate team was gearing up to launch a new initiative in 2020 to better educate residents on what containers should be recycled and what should be disposed of in the trash. Unfortunately, the program had to be shelved in March due to the COVID-19 crisis. They hope to revisit it soon, but a timeframe has not been determined.
This is one rare instance where we are told NOT to recycle these white containers or clear cups if they are marked as compostable, even though they look and feel similar to recyclable paper or plastic. Let’s not be careless and contaminate our recycling streams. We work so hard to make our recycling work!
Be sure to continue to check the Riderwood Reporter Newspaper/Newsletter for any future information about these containers and other environmental initiatives.
