From the Deputy’s Desk Student Wellbeing The Manly West Student Wellbeing Policy reflects the NSW Department of Education (DoE) commitment to creating quality learning opportunities for children to build on their individual strengths enabling them to Connect, Succeed and Thrive throughout life. Manly West is committed to providing a safe, secure and happy environment which encourages each child to:

be actively connected to their learning, have positive and respectful relationships and experience a sense of belonging to their school and community;

be respected, valued, encouraged, supported and empowered to succeed and

grow and flourish, thrive and prosper.

Manly West Positive Behaviour Award System Teachers use a range positive behaviour management strategies inside and outside the classroom to encourage positive behaviours at school. Examples teachers use in the classroom:

Table points

House points

Sticker/star chart

Stickers/stamps

Class trophy for best student/table group of the day/week

Class game afternoon for good behaviour/work

Special privileges e.g. do a message, take work to supervisor/Principal etc.

Class special awards, e.g. reading, spelling, science, etc.

Dojos We also have a whole school system in place which was developed in 2015 implemented in 2016 and reviewed in 2019. This was the first K-6 Merit system that had been put in place at Manly West. The PBEL Team developed the system to ensure all students received positive reinforcement for commitment to learning and positive behaviour that accumulates throughout their time at Manly West. Minis: These are given out by teachers and school staff to reward positive behaviours. Students write their name and class on the mini which is placed into a box that is kept in the classroom. These are collected and put into a grade box. Draws are conducted and prizes are awarded to the students at assemblies. There is no limit set for how many minis are given out by teachers which allows the teachers to use these as a quick positive reinforcement of appropriate behaviours. Respect Responsibility Aspire Cards: Each classroom teacher presents 3 cards per week to their students. These are given to students who are demonstrating our school expectations. When students have collected 4 of these they are eligible for an Expectation Certificate which is presented at assemblies. It is important that students have a safe place to store their cards as we encourage them to take responsibility for them. Students are reminded at assemblies about handing in their cards to receive their next award. Students collect their cards/banners throughout their time at Manly West to earn banners. This is a cumulative system that follows the students through from K-6 and therefore cards earnt from previous years can be used through the following years. Students work their way through the system to earn bronze, silver and gold banners. When a student receives a gold banner they earn an entry into the Manly West Gold Book with a special presentation at assembly including a citation and a badge. This flow chart which shows the sequence of the system. Once students have achieved a bronze banner they begin the process again to obtain a silver banner and then a gold banner. Lost Property SRC Initiative

Thank you to the SRC for their labelling initiative. All classes were busy labelling their belongings. Please make sure any new items bought from the uniform shop are labelled with your child’s name and class.

Kitchen Garden

In the Kitchen Garden this week… The Kitchen Garden is our beautiful outdoor classroom. Year 4 are learning about investigating the features of vertebrates. Year 1 had their first lesson this week learning how to care for our Kitchen Garden. The next installment from the War on Waste team is on tonight! Fight for Planet A: Our Climate Challenge is on ABC tv at 8.30pm. Catch up on ABC iview if you haven't seen the previous series. They make excellent family viewing. https://iview.abc.net.au/show/war-on-waste

Growing a beautiful edible garden You might have seen Costa from Gardening Australia visiting the garden of a Manly West family on the program last week. This garden belongs to Katja Phegan (Felix Year 1 and Jamie Year 3). It's a wonderful example of a productive and beautiful edible garden and what you can achieve in a small space.

ROT

Did you know that organic waste in landfill breaks down anaerobically to produce methane and carbon dioxide? These are very potent greenhouse gases. One of the best ways to reduce your family's carbon footprint is to compost all your food waste.

Composting is easy and great fun.

It's so satisfying to watch the worms chomp through your scraps! You'll make fertiliser for your garden and your red bin will be much emptier.

Angie in the Kitchen Garden is always happy to chat about composting or the courses at Kimbriki Ecohouse. Keep an eye on the newsletter for future dates.

No space for a compost bin? Visit www.sharewaste.com to find a neighbour who can take your scraps.
