PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As the end of the school year rapidly approaches, our Year 12’s are taking part in Examinations and completion of assignment work. Last week we had a fantastic Year 12 BBQ with Family and friends followed by our farewell assembly. We wish all our Year 12 students all the

best in their examinations and studies. The Year 11 students are also coming to the completion of their courses with Examinations and Pre Year 12 lessons for 2018 taking place in week 7. In these sessions students will be working with their Year 12 teachers in reviewing the expectations of their subjects for next year, receiving resources that they can start to look at and in many cases have their first assignment handed out. Our Year 10 students will be taking part in examinations and review lessons in Week 8.

Can I remind all parents and students that we expect all Year 8, 9 and 10 students to be attending school till Friday 15th December.

Student Leadership for 2018 Staff and students are going through elections for our student leaders for 2018. Once these results are finalised I will announce our leaders in the next newsletter. Year 8 SRC elections for the Student Representative Council will be held early in 2018 after students have had an opportunity to get to know each other as a group. Thank you to the outgoing SRC and House Captains/Vice Captains for their outstanding work this year.

These students will be recognised with all our award winners at Presentation Night on Tuesday 12th December which begins at 7:30pm in the School Hall.

Presentation Night Tuesday 12th December 2017 The tradition of inviting previous students as guest speakers is again a feature of this year’s presentation night. Our guest speaker this year is Professor Wayne Tilley. Professor Tilley is Director of the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories, University of Adelaide and Hanson Institute, which incorporates more than 50 researchers and clinicians working on breast and prostate cancer.

Prof Tilley’s laboratory has made a major contribution to understanding the molecular mechanisms of resistance to hormonal therapies used in the treatment of prostate cancer. In particular, his laboratory has shown that continued signalling via the AR is an important determinant of disease progression and treatment response in all stages of prostate cancer. A current major research focus is the development of new treatments for prostate cancer that target the AR. Prof Tilley’s laboratory has also pioneered research into understanding the pivotal role of AR in counteracting the proliferative effects of estrogens in the breast.

We look forward to hearing about Professor Wayne Tilley’s journey from Waikerie High School to his present position. STEMWORKS update Progress on our STEM Works upgrade is gathering pace, architects Woods Bagot completing their work and the next stage of tendering work taking place. STEM is the name given to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (incorporating physics and chemistry). These are often taught together, recognizing their interrelationship.

Our $2.5 million project is one of 139 across the state. Projects are expected to be completed from February through to December 2018. For more information please visit: https://www.decd.sa.gov.au/sites-and-facilities/stemworks. Work is anticipated to begin n March or April 2018.

This week concludes with staff reviewing how we have performed for 2017 and making strategic plans which are documented in our 2016-18 Site Improvement Plan (S.I.P). In the next newsletter I will report back on our findings and future directions.

DROP OFF AND PICKUP FROM SCHOOL

Morning and Afternoon drop offs/collections The school requests that all parents / caregivers use the Recreation Centre car park to drop off their children in

the morning and collect them in the afternoon.

We ask that parents/caregivers do not collect their children from outside the Administration building or TAFE car park.

This creates the potential for an accident and this has happened in the past. Your child’s safety is paramount.

Car Parking Please do not park in the staff car park area, located along Blake Road. There are temporary car parks outside of the Administration Building if you need to see the administration staff for any reason or have a meeting with a teaching staff member. We would be very appreciative if all parents / caregivers can support us in this process.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Year 12 Students Year 12 students are currently in the middle of sitting their final external exams or are completing final assessment tasks with class teachers. We wish them all the best for the remainder of their school year which will conclude at the end of

Week 5, the 17th November. All students are reminded to return all text books and school property and complete blue leaver forms.

Year 11 Exams and Review lessons These will be held during Week 7 (27th-1st Sept). Exams will be held at the Learning Hub. This will support the learning and assessment process and students will also gain valuable exam experience for the following year. During this week review lessons will also be held to introduce Stage 2 subjects to help students prepare for Year 12. A full timetable will be issued and students will be expected to sign in and out of the school during the exam and review lesson week.

MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIAL WORKER

Week 6 the SRC will be presenting an assembly for the White Ribbon Breaking the Silence Schools Program. Waikerie High School is in the two year process of becoming a White Ribbon School. The program

supports the school to embed models of respectful relationships in the school culture and in classroom activities. The Program supports schools to bring about a commitment to stop violence against women. It builds on existing initiatives to strengthen a culture of respect and equality at all levels of the school community – through curriculum, role modelling from staff, policies and procedures, domestic violence education programs and strengthened family and community partnerships. The program provides;

Safer, more respectful and inclusive schools

Calmer classrooms and more productive schools

Increased awareness and understanding of

violence against women and principles of gender

equality

Reduction in violence supportive attitudes and

behaviours

Evidence-based and evaluated program with

proven capacity to result in long-term positive

Supported by Departments of Education across

DEBATING

Throughout Term 3, four teams of students from all year levels participated in the Interschool Debating Competition. Public speaking is often one of the most significant fears people have. Students had three minor rounds, where they debated a range of

topics, including school truancy, parking places for prams, Antivax Messages, Japanese Whaling and Duel Citizenship in Australian Parliament. All teams won debates during the minor rounds, with the Year 9 team and Senior team progressing through to the finals, which we hosted. While we didn’t come away with a win on the night, all debates were of a high standard, with the senior team only missing out by 1 point. The improvement, confidence and support within the group was fantastic to see, with constant feedback from adjudicators addressing the way our students represented themselves and the school.

SCHOOL SHEARING AND CITRUS INDUSTRY TRIAL

On Thursday the 26th November, Chris Gogoll visited the school to shear the sheep. The students had a wonderful time and learned a lot about handling wool and some had a shot at the ‘long blow’ of the sheep to feel firsthand what a working handpiece feels like.

Thank you to Chris for his time to show and help educate the students about the possible careers that they can have in the wool industry.

Citrus Industry Crop Trial Waikerie High School is proud to announce that we are taking part in an Citrus Industry Crop Trial. Through talks with the Citrus Board of SA and Department of Primary Industries (DPI) NSW, Waikerie High School has had 63 orange trees planted at school for a commercial trial examining root stock varieties for commercial production. We would also like to thank AgriTech for their generous support in organising and sponsoring the irrigation for the citrus.

This opportunity has allowed us to work with industry researchers to develop students’ knowledge about career pathways in Agricultural research, the purpose of experimental design and to build networks within local and national industries. We will be having visits from Professor Tahir Khurshid of the DPI NSW to talk to the students and show them industry testing methods, visits from local growers such as Anthony Fulwood to demonstrate and explain to students the importance of managing trees both commercially and in the bac yard.

Through the hard work of the Year 9, 10 and 11 Agriculture students, all orange trees are now planted and ready to grow. The aim of this program is to provide opportunities for students to connect with local industries and we look forward to the continued efforts and support that the Citrus growers within Waikerie are providing to the school.
