Pray for an End to Abortion
Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life, And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know nothing ends more lives than abortion. Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death
by the Resurrection of Your Son.
Today I commit myself Never to be silent,
Never to be passive, Never to be forgetful of the unborn,
And never to stop defending life
Until all your children are protected
Through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

HEARING ASSISTANCE
Epiphany church offers a loop system for anyone wearing a hearing aid with a “T” (telecoil) setting.
To use this service, hearing aid wearers must sit in the first five rows behind the Lector pew on the left side of the church, facing the pulpit.
Surrounding these pews, there is a copper band on the floor, which enables the system.

UNDERSTANDING TODAY’S READINGS
(In order to understand God’s love, we need to understand and ponder what He says)
Malachi 3:19-20a
“But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice...”
When will evil punished? When will we receive God’s justice? These questions are as old as humanity, yet as current as today's news. Ancient peoples - and we today - are really asking, “Lord, when will you come?”
The prophet Malachi proclaimed his oracles when the Jewish people had been returned to their homeland after their exile in Babylon. As with all good things, the newness and excitement of their return wore thin. Once again, Temple leadership became corrupt. As always, the poor suffered at the hand of the wealthy – and faith became lost in politics and exploitation. God was forgotten.
Malachi wrote a simple message: God would return. In the coming day of judgement, the Lord would consume the evil like a flash fire of intense heat. But that same fire would sooth the faithful.
God's sword of judgment has two sides. It condemns, yet vindicates. To our human perception, it may seem a long time coming, but his judgment will come. And we must prepare.
2 Thessalonians 3:7-12
“...we instruct...in the Lord Jesus Christ...work quietly…”
Newton’s law of inertia says, “An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion…unless acted upon by a…force.”
Even more than physics, we are subject to the laws of our human nature. Paul’s letter addressed the problem of laziness in two ways. First, he gave himself as an example. He and his evangelizers could have leaned on the hospitality of the community, even ordering help from them. Instead, they chose to work so they wouldn’t be a hardship on their hosts and could claim the high moral ground.
Then Paul addressed the question of those who are unwilling to work – not unable – but unwilling. Charity among Christians was an abiding principle taught by Christ. Early Christian communities were known for sharing with those in need. But Paul acknowledged that those who ask for favors are obliged to work to their best ability rather than become a burden on the community.
As Christians, we are called to work and to share. Paul’s words teach us to work hard and to pray for both wisdom and charity as we open our hearts to others.
Today’s Psalm: 98 The Lord comes
to rule the earth with justice.
Luke 21:5-19
“...not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”
Temples at the time of Christ were often admired for their fine stones and costly adornments. It was only natural to appreciate what could be seen and touched and evaluated in earthly terms – the finer the monument, the closer to God were the people who worshipped there.
Jesus pointed out that appearances were deceiving. The impressive Temple of today would be reduced to rubble tomorrow. Once the Jews heard Christ’s prophecy, they wanted to know when the destruction would happen and what sign they should expect as a warning. They had been awaiting Judgment Day for centuries and assumed it would be a time when their enemies would be destroyed and they would be rewarded for their faith in God. Now Jesus was warning them of long years of famines, plagues, revolutions, false prophets, discord among nations, religions, communities and families. And before all that, they would be seized, persecuted and, perhaps, martyred.
So how would God’s people prepare for the arrival of his Kingdom? According to Jesus, the Lord himself will provide. God’s eloquence and wisdom in speech, which cannot be contradicted or overcome will protect his people. Our only armor on Judgment Day will be our trust in the Lord. Our perseverance until then will secure our lives.
