Pastoral Letter

Dear people of God,

We greet each one of you in the precious name of our Lord and Sav-ior Jesus Christ. The Lord has been faithful and it is a great privilege for us to enter another new month. The last month was a blessing to many of our members with lot of church activities and meetings. We also thank the Lord for His blessings upon our Youth Camp, Senior Citizen’s Visitation and Sunday School Activities. These ac-tivities will help us to know one another better and draw ourselves closer to God as a church. Please uphold the ministry of the church this month as we pray, meditate, fellowship and worship our risen Lord together as one body of Christ. The theme that we have chosen for this month’s pulpit exposition is, ‘God’s Love is so wonderful’. Hope this will help you to grow in the Lord spiritually and refresh your walk with Him every day.

God loves every one yet that is very personally. A leader may say to the people ‘I love my people’, yet he may not even know many of those people individually. But that is not case with God. We are not strangers before God, as our creator, omniscient Almighty He knows us one by one. He knows our name, nature and personal traits. Whatever may be our personal conditions He loves us, we can come to God just as we are. The degree of one’s love for someone is measured by the degree of his or her sacrifice for that person. When you deeply love someone, you’ll do a lot of difficult, challenging, or painful things for him or her that you would never do for any-one else. Phil. 2:6 says ‘He became the servant’ – Master becoming servant. He loves us so much and His love is so wonderful that we cannot measure it. God started his business of saving people with love and ended it with love.

In 1 John 3:16-17, we read: This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be

in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. How can you love others if you’re not sacrific-ing for them? In your life, examine what you can do to serve others in order to show them true love -- God’s love. Such love requires sacrifice.

The queen of Sweden sold her jewels to provide her people with hospitals and orphanages. One day she visited a small house [A nursing home kind of place] where the patents are treated. She went near a bedridden patient and started talking to her. As she was talk-ing to her, the tears of gratitude from that bedridden woman fell on the royal hand…suddenly the queen exclaimed seeing those drops of tears on her hand…God is sending me back my jewels again.

God’s love is so wonderful. He never leaves us nor forgets. Isaiah 49:15 says, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! Let us share this love with others that we have experienced in Jesus Christ our Lord. We need to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God, to wipe away the boundaries of our love. THE WOUNDED OF THE WORLD ARE OUR AGENDA.

Are we ready to share this love? A poem by Ruth Walsh pierces my heart.

I was naked, and you questioned my lackOf modesty in my appearance.I was imprisoned, and you debatedThe legal aspects of interference.

I was penniless, and you discussedTax-deductable donations from your wealth.I was sick, and you thanked the Lord, For the blessings of your health.

I was hungry, and you formed a clubTo study malnutrition.I was homeless, and you said God’s loveWas shelter under any condition.

Psalmist David says in 139:14- I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. It is my privilege to say few words about our brother Late T.J.Ramakrishnan on this occasion of his memorial service. I was associated with Mr Ramakrishnan, ever since he became the member of Indiranagar Methodist Church in the year 1976. When my family was worshipping in the premises of the Campus Crusade for Christ offi ce in Defense Colony, Indiranagar. I was working in Bangalore Development Authority as an engineer on deputation from P.W.D. I proposed to the elders of our Church , Late Col. Isaac, Late Maj. Brave, Late Sqd. Ldr. J.F. Peters, Late Ephraim Paul to apply for a site in B.D.A for the construction of a Church. At this time Mr. T.J.Ramakrishnan was Divisional Commissioner of Bangalore and also holding the additional charge of the Administrator of Bangalore City Corporation. By being the Administrator of the Bangalore City Corporation, he was a member of the B.D.A. Using the infl uence of Mr. Ramakrishnan, we were able to get the allotment

of the present site measuring 120’ x 200’.

We took the possession of the site on 20-06-1976 and formed a building committee with Mr. T.J. Ramakrishnan as Chairman . The building committee decided to construct a Prayer Hall to start our worship services. We constructed a prayer hall and dedicated it on 20-12-1981 and started our Church worship here. Later on, we constructed the fi rst fl oor Sunday School block and the main sanctuary building and dedicated on 07-07-1991. In all these things the services of Mr. T.J.Ramakrishnan is to be remembered.

Apart from these services of Mr. T.J.Ramakrishnan had started the Home Bible Studies and also started the TAFTEE classes in the Church. He even formed prayer groups in the Church namely Hour of Power every Saturday morning and Fasting and Prayer every Second Saturday of the month, and also taking part in preaching on Sunday services.

After his retirement from Government services he was appointed as General Secretary of

Bible Society of India and served for a period of three years. During this time he had improved the system of working in the Bible Society is an example. He was a hard worker and a man of integrity. Many times he used to walk 3 kms. from his home to the Bible Society of India offi ce to save the cost of petrol. He was very humble even to his subordinates in the offi ce. He brought up his children in the fear of God . He was a prayerful man and even in his offi ce he used to pray and start to work. Many a time he used to

call me to his offi ce and discuss about the Church improvement plans. He also used to tell me to fear God and do the work with a conscious mind to please God. I salute him for his conduct and pray God Almighty to rest his soul in peace.

Friendship QuotesIn prosperity our friends know us. In adversity we know our friends. A friend is someone who reaches for your hand, but touches your heart. There can be no friendship where there is no freedom. No man is useless while he has a friend. Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friend whom we choose. Books like friends should be few and well chosen. Friendship marks a life even more deeply than love. Love risks degenerating into obsession, friendship is never anything but sharing.

One who looks for a friend without faults will have none. A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out. Good

friends are like stars, you don’t always see them, but you know they are always there. I keep my friends as misers do their treasurer, because of all the things granted us by wisdom, none is greater or better than friendship. Best friends are like diamonds, precious and rare. False friends are like leaves, found every where. The most beautiful discovery that true friends can make is that they can grow separately without growing apart. True friendship is like sound health. The value of it is seldom known until it is lost. When the character of a man is not clear to you, look at his friend.

I love my friends,-Elsie Peter

Camp OUT standing“The lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1

Finally the big day had arrived-THE YOUTH CAMP!!! All of us assembled at church and loaded the bus with our luggage and ourselves. We prayed to our HEAVENLY FATHER to go before us as a pillar of cloud and pillar of fi re and lead the way for us. Buckled up and headed towards MARATHOMA CAMP SITE at Doddabalapura. All of us were lost in our own world like listening to songs having some serious discussions and some into humorous talks. At last, after a two hours journey in the bustling traffi c, we reached the camp site. Left our stuff in the dorms and went to have our breakfast and get ready for the next course of action plan which was a time of praise and worship followed by a session by Philip uncle and other games and fun. All the days ended very well.

The bible says “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am amidst among them” and HIS word is true because we could feel his presence in a very powerful way. There were constraints or challenges that we as a committee had to face. God had planned it well for us. He had made everything good in HIS own

time. Praise the almighty lord for that.

We had a blessed and amazing time of praise and worship with the MUSTARD BAND with us. That hour was nothing less than a live concert. The sound system, the songs and lightings were just fabulous by the grace of GOD. Philip Cherian uncle, Patrick uncle, Paul Victor uncle, Vijay Paulson uncle and his family graced the occasion with their presence. They shared their lives experiences and how GOD had performed unbelievable miracles in their life.

We had a series of sessions focused on what Christian living actually is and how to be a witness to the people around us. Sessions on “Who is God? Doctrine ofTrinity”, “Doctrine of the Word of God”, “What is worship?”, “Importance of a Christian fellowship”, “Love Sex and Marriage”, “Being witnesses” were handled by Mr. Philip Cherian and they have helped us to be equipped towards better Christian living. As the youth, we have felt a clear calling towards missions and the need to reach out and preach the gospel.

We also focused on building

our spiritual lives up by means of workshops such as “How to study the Bible?”, “Prayer” and “Missions and Evangelism”. Workshops such as “Career guidance”, “Campus to corporate” were designed to help us in our personal lives and “Sound”, “Music in worship” and “Praise and worship” were focused on helping out the church in any small way possible. Our morning devotions, led by our youth leaders, were the best part of the camp.

The games were led by Joel uncle, through which we could learn many things as well. There truly was the presence of GOD surrounding the place. A peaceful ambience that each soul will long and thirst for. We left on the 15th of august and returned on the 18th……but the question is how did those four days fl y by? Each and every youth who attended the camp said that they were touched

and blessed and here are few words said by them-

MOSES: “SPEECHLESS…AMAZING”ALICE: “SPECTACULAR”ASHISH: “I’M BLESSED”

And much more soothing and satisfying words. ALL THE PRAISE GOES TO HIM AND HIM ALONE, AMEN!!!!!!

Personally, I have been blessed by the sessions and I have been renewed in strength to carry on my Christian walk. A lot of questions that my atheist friends ask, which have continuously pestered my mind, have been answered in the camp.

And last but not the least, on behalf of the committee I take this opportunity to thank the church, the pastors and each and everyone who helped in making this camp a big success

Survey

Last month a world-wide survey was conducted by the UN. The task was given to a multi-lingual International Survey Company based in southern India.

The only question asked was:-

“Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?”

The survey was a huge failure because of the following:

1. In Eastern Europe they didn’t know what “honest” meant.2. In Western Europe they didn’t know what “shortage” meant.3. In Africa they didn’t know what “food” meant.4. In China they didn’t know what “opinion” meant.5. In the Middle East they didn’t know what “solution” meant.6. In South America they didn’t know what “please” meant.7. In the USA they didn’t know what “the rest of the world” meant.8. In Australia they hung up as soon as they heard the Indian accent9. In Pakistan they didn’t know what ‘give’ meant

Give me a sense of humor, Lord, Give me the grace to see a joke, To get some humor out of life, And pass it on to other folk!

Out of nothing; He made everythingOf which no man can copy a thing!

I am in awe to see God`s handiworksPerfectly carved by just His words!

He who painted the vast skies;Took time to shape the small fl ies!

I cant imagine His level of patienceTrying to mould us in all occasions!

Truly magnifi cent are all His creations; Each magnifying the creator`s perfection!

I am honoured to be His priceless jewel; In whom He verily longs to dwell! He has fi lled me with life & peace

PERFECTION in CREATION

Can I be a Christian without joining oter Christians in the Church? Yes, it is something like: Being a soldier without

an army, a seaman without a ship, a business man without a business, a tuba player without an orchestra, a football player

without a team or a bee without a hive.

BIBLE STUDYSong of Solomon

THE ROSE AND THE LILYThe author is talking about the beauty of his church. He compares Christ to rose and lily. Christ is so beautiful and a rose and lily. His church, the believers must be like a rose and lily. Their lives must be beautiful. Beauty is not something physical, but we will look beautiful, when Jesus lives in us. He also talks about their intimacy. The love between them is so deep and strong. This is reciprocal love. The spouse loves the bride and the bride loves the spouse. The love between them is so true and genuine - The love between Christ and His church must be true and genuine. It should always remain fresh.

Chapter 2

Vs1. Christ compares Himself with rose of Sharon and the lily of the valleys. This is to express His presence with the people in the world. Shows easy access with people. This also teach His people to adorn God with Himself. Rose fl ower is beautiful and has lot of fragrance. He is the rose of Sharon where plenty

of rose grows, indicating the salvation is common to all. He is not a rose locked in garden, but in the open so that all may come and get benefi t.

Vs2. He compares the church to rose and the lily. The church should be like Jesus, rose and lily. People’s beauty consists in conformity to the standards of Jesus. He is saying here that Christ’ followers look beautiful like roses and lily when they truly follow Him. He further explains rose and lily have thorns in them. He compares the wicked to thorns. They are like thorn in the church. However rose cannot do away with thorns, so also the church cannot do away with the wicked people. Christ loves them too. However the end result of evil is that they would be burnt. Though rose and lily are among the thorns, they must maintain their identity and should not become like thorns – No compromise with the standards of this world.

Vs 3-7. In theses verses the spouse commends the beloved.

She compares Him to an apple tree. The apple tree is very useful bears, more fruits, though small. Here she says that her beloved is more useful and has pre-eminence than all the creatures. She talks about the communion and comforts she had with Him. She sat down by Him with great delight. Sitting under His shadow was refreshing. Christ is to the believers as the shadow of a great tree.

The tree not only provides shade but also fruits. He is saying here that those who sit under the tree enjoy the fruits. This simile is compared to a purchased soul. When our soul is purchased, it is dry, no joy and when we come to Christ, he provides rest to the soul. We will enjoy the privileges of the covenant.

In V4. She talks about her obligation to Him. She praises Him for having brought to banqueting house. She also talked about how he entertained her with the banner of love.

The gospel is compared to a banner. On it are the letters of love written with gold and with blood. Christ is the captain of salvation and He enlists everyone under the banner of

love. She speaks of the banner of love, His kindness over her. She experienced His banner of love and remember the same with delight. She talks about her passionate love for the spouse. She speaks of her love sickness. The spouse is away at a distance and she has become sick of His love. She asks Him to comfort her with the fruit of that apple tree.

Vs 6, reads that she relieves of this sickness with the help of the power and tenderness of divine grace. Though withdrawn but a very present help. When our soul goes through troubles, God strengthens us. He helped David, Job, and many others in their soul’s sickness. She finds her spouse and careful not be disturbed by anyone her communion with Him. Those that experience the sweetness of communion with Christ, and the sensible manifestation of His love, cannot but desire the continuance of these blessed views and these blessed visits.

V8. She hears Him speak, the voice of my beloved. She greatly rejoices gladly because of the bridegroom’s voice. She sees Him come. Sees the going

of our God, our King. This can be applied to the Old Testament saints who foresaw the coming of Christ in flesh. Behold he comes (Ps. 40:7). He comes cheerfully. He came through all odds. His coming was not easy as we read there was so much of opposition. The inference we can draw from this is, whatever difficulties that the church faces, God will break them.

She is pleased with His appearance and glances of His favour. He stands behind our wall. I know He is there. This is how the Old Testament church thought of while expecting Messiah. Christ stood behind the ceremonial law. He was near them, though they did not see Him clearly. They saw Him through their sacrifices. This can be compared with our present situation. We now see Him through a glass darkly, but hope to see Him face to face shortly. Some compare them to the state of a believer when he is under the clouds. The wall that blocks us is our sin. He is waiting to come in see us through the window.

Vs10-13. Remember the invitation he had given to come

walking with Him. What her beloved had done for her soul, she tells for the encouragement of others.

He called her His love and His fair one. She is acceptable to Him. Rise and come away (10-13). He calls her repeatedly to come and follow. This shows her backwardness. Even we too have backwardness in our Christian life. Need to be called repeatedly to follow Christ.

He is talking about the different season and timings. We enjoy some season and don’t enjoy some because of some difficulties or things are not in favour. The season that we enjoy, like the spring. When we see the beautiful flowers, birds singing etc. This can be compared to the gospel time. The Gospel calls us to come away from the world and come into fellowship with Christ. This can be compared to the conviction of the sinners into a state of grace.

Vs. 14-17 – Invitation to the church. He appreciates and calls her sweet voice. He also says that the prayer of the upright is real delight. Our prayers are real delight to Him. She responds by saying that she belong to Christ.

My beloved to me and I to Him. She also expresses the hope that the days of gospel will dawn our darkness and doubt will pass away and the upright will have dominion.

REFLECTION

Let us think of our spiritual beauty. Can someone say that IMC is like rose and lily. This is possible only when Christ is in us.

Secondly, what about our relationship with Him? Is it fresh, like the lovers? Do we

experience the intimacy with God? Our relationship with Christ must be one of friendly. Are we like friends? One of the weakness of Christian life is that many a time, this becomes routine and cold. There is no joy and enthusiasm in our relationship with God. This has become dry and we don’t enjoy the first love. Let us renew our love and have relationship with our God, the Father.
