Over 400 people were present on the night including representatives of Italy’s leading law firms. In order to align themselves more fully with the interests of their corporate clients, the most forward-thinking law firms in Italy have looked beyond the traditional practice-led approach and have sought to innovate for more strategic services. In the words of Ugo Di Stefano, general counsel at Italy’s biggest publishing company Mondadori, the Toplegal Industry Awards “mirror a new way of looking at legal business and the market”. Assessing the results achieved by law firms was a technical commission made up of 22 experts, including leading company counsel and heads of corporate affairs, who worked together in dedicated teams which reflected the various award categories (see page ...).

The HighlightsFive law firms – BonelliErede, Dla Piper, Gattai Minoli Agostinelli, Gianni Ori-goni Grippo Cappelli and Latham & Watkins – emerged as the biggest winners at the TopLegal Industry Awards. Dla Piper walked away with four awards, winning for the biomedical, real estate and telecoms industries as well as for the infrastructure deal of the year involving the Milan Metro Line 5 project, this time as joint-winners with BonelliErede. BonelliErede, for their part, also won in the private client category. Close behind DLA with three awards, Gianni Origoni was recognised for the environ-ment and energy categories along with biomedical deal of the year involving Sorin and Cyberonics which represented a landmark cross-border deal for European consolida-tion of the medical devices industry. Gattai Minoli, Latham & Watkins and Legance were also recognised co-counsel for the Sorin-Cyberonics merger. Gatti Minoli also collected the award for private equity while Latham & Watkins secured the award for its work on the restructuring deal of the year involving distressed energy company Sorgenia.

Company Restructurings Deal of the Year: SorgeniaLATHAM & WATKINSThe firm steered the €2 billion restructuring of energy company Sorgenia on its agree-ment with over 30 banks. The complex deal involved challenging governance issues and a conversion of debt into equity by the banks that left them with around 98 per-cent of the company.

EnergyGIANNI ORIGONI GRIPPO CAPPELLI & PARTNERSAmong the market’s first movers for across-the-industry legal assistance for energy. The team completed the merger between electric utility company Azienda Energeti-ca and SEL (Südtiroler Elektrizitätsaktiengesellschaft) to create the new multi utility company Alperia.
