From the Head of Prep School

Welcome A warm welcome is extended to Tom and Abbie Lewis and their family as they join the Pulteney community this term. These children are a welcome addition to the Prep School and we wish them well on their learning journey through Pulteney Grammar.

Values and Ethics - Theme Term 3The Prep School has chosen ‘Responsibility, Honesty and Trust’ as the theme for Term 3. In planning for the introduction of this theme staff have considered the Ethical understanding capability from the Australian curriculum and aspects of the National Framework for Values Education in Australian Schools DEEWR 2005.

Integrated into all key-learning areas, classroom teachers will explore the following concepts with their students:

• Always take responsibility for your actions

• Be honest and sincere in all that you say and do

• The importance of telling the truth

• Resolving differences in constructive, non violent, peaceful ways

• Contributing to society

• Taking care of the environment

‘Responsibility, Honesty and Trust’ are important concepts that the children need to fully understand as they grow and mature during the Primary years. Thus, all students in the Prep will be encouraged to either take on, or further develop, a role of responsibility within the home environment this term. They will also be involved in activities and games in class that highlight the importance of being both trustworthy and honest in all interactions with others.

This theme will also be incorporated into the ‘Habits of Mind’ concepts that are being introduced at all year levels in the Prep School this term.

Page 3: Review weekly - Pulteney Grammar SchoolReview weekly Vol. 20 No. 22, 6 August 2014Contents From the Principal From the Head of Prep School From the Chaplain Mathematics Challenge for

The four ‘Habits of Mind’ that the children will be encouraged to explore in class in Term 3 are:

• Persisting

• Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations

• Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision

• Learning Continuously

I encourage all parents to take the opportunity to discuss the theme of ‘Responsibility, Honesty and Trust’ and the ‘Habits of Mind’ with your children to help further their understanding and appreciation of these concepts.

Leadership

I wish to congratulate the Semester 1 Student Representative Council members and the Year 5 Assistant House Leaders for the roles they played in the Prep School during the first semester of the year. They approached their leadership roles very responsibly and are to be commended for this. The following leaders for Semester 2 will be presented with their badges on Wednesday 6 August and I look forward to working closely with them this semester.

These children will be very busy in the coming weeks as they work with Mrs Mavropoulos to write their own plays, create their costumes and props, and prepare to perform their challenge solutions on Tournament Day at Flinders University on September 14. We wish them the best of luck and thank Mrs Mavropoulos for her guidance and support in the lead up to the competition.

Life Education ProgramDuring the first three weeks of Term 3 the children in Years 3 to 6 have been participating in the Life Education program run by Life Education SA. The teaching staff from Life Education SA are always popular with the children. They use a range of visual teaching mediums to guide classes through aspects of the Health curriculum. The children particularly enjoy learning from the entertaining puppet ‘Healthy Harold’. Each session provides classroom teachers with further stimulus for engaging the children in the Health program for the term.

The following concepts will be covered at each year level:

Year 3 - Harold’s Diary

• Bullying• Expressing emotion• Developing coping strategies and support networks• Healthy food choices• Active lifestyles• Defining a drug• Safety with medicines

Year 4: bCyberwise

• Building positive relationships with online and offline friends• Safe and respectful behaviour online• Responsible behaviours when using communication technology• Strategies for keeping personal information safe online• Strategies to deal with face to face and cyber bullying• Exploring the role of a ‘bystander’

Year 5: It’s Your Call • The definition of a drug• Legal drugs (e.g. alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and medicines) have varying degrees of risk• The level of risk is defined by the relationship between the person, the drug and the environment• Description of behaviours that can risk the safety of self and others • Exploration of S.E.A.R.C.H. as a problem solving model

National Science Week

‘Food for our future: Science feed the world’ is the National Science Week theme to be celebrated in the Prep School in week 6 of this term. Classes will explore this topic through a range of activities planned and directed by our Coordinator of Science, Ms Robyn Cox.

Children’s Book Week This year’s Book Week theme is ‘Connect to reading: Reading to connect ’. All students in the Prep School are currently looking at the books short-listed by the Children’s Book Council in categories such as Picture books, Information books, and books for Younger Readers and Early Childhood. Our Book Week celebrations this year include a number of special activities including a visit from two well known authors, Phil Cummings and Dr Rosanne Hawke, the Book Week Parade and a performance from the Splash Theatre.

On Thursday 21 August the Prep School will stage their Book Week Parade in Wyatt Hall. It will commence at 8.45am and run for approximately 20 minutes. Students are encouraged to dress up as a favourite book character or as something relating to the Book Week theme. This Parade is always a lot of fun and so parents, carers and friends are most welcome to attend.

Family Life programStudents in Years 4 to 6 will participate in a ‘Growth and Development’ program in weeks 7, 8 and 9 of this term. The curriculum, to be taught by classroom teachers from each year level, is based on the recommended framework from the Family Life SA organisation. A letter outlining the content of the ‘Growth and Development’ program will be sent to parents in the near future. A consent form, to be signed by parents, will accompany this letter.

Please note that a Family Life Evening Session will be run by Mrs Sharon Bowering on 28 August beginning at 6.30pm in the Theatrette. A letter outlining details for the evening will be sent home this week.

Cyber Safety Classroom teachers at all year levels in the Prep School will continue to focus on the theme of ‘Cyber Safety’ with students in Term 3. Our aim is to educate the children to be successful, safe and secure in their online interactions.

I would like to draw your attention to the following excellent resource for parents.

http://www.cybersafetyhelp.gov.au/easyguide/social_networking

This site outlines the cyber safety features of social networking sites, search engines and online games.

Please note. It is recommended that children under the age of 13 do not participate in social media sites of any kind. If children under the age of 13 are allowed to participate in social media it is recommended that the account is managed by a parent or guardian. This includes all popular social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook.

From the ChaplainServant LeadershipThis Wednesday (Week 3) is the Prep Chapel Service for welcoming the new Student Representative Leaders into their important positions of leadership. Here’s an excerpt of the talk I gave:

A good question for all of us to ask ourselves today is, ‘What makes a good leader?’ and, ‘Are you one of those?’ For some answers I bring you to the bible in Mark 10:35-45.

One day two of Jesus’ disciples or special friends, James and John, asked Jesus if they could sit next to him at the places of privilege in heaven – one on his right, the other on his left. They thought they, above all the other disciples, deserved special places of honour in God’s kingdom. The hide of them! But perhaps, as Jesus pointed out to them, they didn’t really realise how big their request was.

Well, a few tongues started wagging among the other disciples when they heard about James’ and John’s request. They were understandably angry (although, if truth be known, they were probably angry because James and John thought of asking first!).

I can imagine Jesus sighing and thinking to himself; when will they ever learn! And so the Bible says he gathered them all together to teach them once again about true leadership.

Jesus says that there are two types of leaders. The first type is the leader who is like a lord. That is they ‘lord it over others’, commanding others to obey them and respect them, by bullying and heavy handed tactics.

‘But no so with you’ Jesus said to his disciples.

Instead, (he says), whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.

Is that what comes to mind when you think about leadership; becoming a ‘servant’ of those who elect you to lead?

In this world, we may be honoured for many things. For academic achievements, for sporting achievements, for all sorts of talents and gifts we may have. And achievement is good. But honour in God’s eyes comes hand in hand with service. The servant leader gains respect by caring for the needs of others.

Servant leadership isn’t easy. It doesn’t come naturally. It’s much easier to be a lord than a

servant. But Jesus doesn’t ask you to go anywhere and do anything that he hasn’t done first. You’re called to be a servant, but Jesus has already gone that way before you;

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a sacrifice for many.

That’s servant leadership.

Year 12 Drama production: The Terrible Infants On Monday last week, tickets for this year’s Stage 2 Drama production, The Terrible Infants, went on sale. We were overwhelmed by the response we received, with hundreds of tickets to our entire September season selling out in 14 hours! Due to popular demand, the class are staging a fourth and final performance at the Bakehouse Theatre (255 Angas St) on Saturday 6 September at 7:00pm. The production follows a travelling group of storytellers - led by the mysterious MC, who collectively share a gritty, tormented past. Each has a story to offer - there’s manky Mingus; Tumb, the boy who eats his Mum; little Linena, the material girl; the invisible Thingummyboy (with a face even his mother forgets), and the tale of Tilly and her tail. A joyous jumble of puppetry, live music and performance, this is a highly sensory theatrical feast weaving a range of dramatic styles, and inspired by gothic, steampunk, and vaudeville genres.

To give students without access to credit cards a fair opportunity to access tickets, these tickets will be available at school via cash sale only, rather than on Trybooking. Tickets are $16 each and can be purchased at lunchtimes in the Drama room until sold out, or by contacting Miss Hibbert directly: [email protected].

Tickets are extremely limited, and won’t last long. Secure your seat now to avoid disappointment!

WellbeingThe Pulteney Wellbeing Committee takes pride in ensuring our student’s social and emotional needs are addressed. As part of this process, we constantly monitor our student’s wellbeing. The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) has developed a nationwide Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEW) Survey for students, ages 3-18 years old. Many of our students took part in this survey last year for which we are very grateful. This year, the Pulteney Wellbeing team is inviting all students from Years 3 to12 to participate in the 2014 survey to be conducted in weeks three and four of Term 3.

The SEW Survey is an anonymous, strength-based survey for students. It is to be administered online during wellbeing lessons and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. The survey will provide an ecological view of student’s wellbeing by assessing:

• Resilience, attitudes and coping skills

• Social skills and values

• Work management and engagement skills

Student’s identification details are not included in the Survey reports. The information gathered from the Survey assists in providing Pulteney Staff with valuable data regarding the wellbeing of various groups of students (e.g., year three girls, year nine boys).

Your child’s participation in this study is voluntary, but we encourage them to participate. The greater the sample size, the more accurately we are able to:

• Better identify the social and emotional needs of our students

• Inform development of student wellbeing policies

• Assess the effectiveness of wellbeing programs currently enacted by the school and to assist us in targeting resources to specific areas of need

• Report on student wellbeing in mission statements and strategic plans

Page 11: Review weekly - Pulteney Grammar SchoolReview weekly Vol. 20 No. 22, 6 August 2014Contents From the Principal From the Head of Prep School From the Chaplain Mathematics Challenge for

• Provide both current and prospective parents, and the community, with an independent assessment of the schools ability to provide for and enhance student’s wellbeing

For further information regarding the Social and Emotional Wellbeing Survey, and a list of example questions, please visit the ACER website at: http://www.acer.edu.au/tests/sew

Your participation is extremely important to the success of this survey, and I thank both, you and your child in advance for your cooperation.

If you do not wish your child to participate in this survey, or you have questions in regards to this process, please contact your child’s Teacher, Home Group Teacher or Tutor Group Teacher directly.

Despite Rory’s consistent cleaning up at the back and Lachie’s solid defense, 2 goals in the final 12 minutes gave Westminster the ascendancy after a pretty even contest. The Pulteney defense, when focused, played some of it’s best football and are also becoming more involved as our first line of attack. Occasional loss of focus allows opposition attackers to find space in our 18-yard box without pressure and thereby to have scoring opportunities. Our possession football, especially across the midfield is getting better, and Kolin sought to really impose himself in this position.

Middle B (Year 8/9) lost to Mercedes College 0 – 8

Best players: Luka Amorico, Alex Ioanni, Alistair Porter

It wasn’t a bad performance but a few players were confused with the location of the game and rocked up late. As a result people played in positions they were unfamiliar with. We created chances like last week and if we had players playing in their normal positions we would have had a better result.

Girls First XI drew with Wilderness School 2 – 2

In the first half the girls played excellent football, in the manner, which we have discussed and trained for. Up by two goals at half time, unfortunately we couldn’t convert second half chances. The team lapsed for 5 minutes, allowing their club players access to goal, which was disappointing. A pleasing result against the team which will probably win the final.

Girls Second XI defeated Seymour College 2 – 0

Goal scorer : Nadine Faulkhead 2

Best players: Claire Churchill, Nadine Faulkhead, Chloe Sue-Grey

A good win for the girls, with 10 players and so players from other teams helping out, the game was well fought out.

Girls Middle A defeated Wilderness School 1 – 0

Goal scorer : Katia Stamatelopoulos

Best Players: Katia Stamatelopoulos, Maya Madsen, Kate Evans

With changes to the team and the support of fill-ins, the girls gave plenty of effort to score a good win against solid opposition. With more focus on the game through use of accurate passing, we will continue to improve.
