From the Principal Anglican CupAt the time of writing for last week’s PRW the Anglican Cup had yet to be played. I mentioned the Cup’s nine-year history and the competition between St John’s Grammar, Woodcroft College and Pedare involving seven sports in a round robin competition.

Without ever holding the Cup in its short history it was, therefore, a tremendous thrill for all involved that Pulteney was victorious. I am most praiseworthy of the students who competed. As ever with Pulteney teams the sportpersonship, endeavour and spiritedness was evident. On this occasion the winning followed. Congratulations.

I offer hearty congratulations, also, to the senior coaches.

Thank you to Nik Sacoutis, too, as Head of Sport, and Richard Sexton, who assists Nik, for their organisation of the day. The playing fields, too, are in superb shape and gratitude is extended to the groundsmen, Adam, Paul, Jono and Mike. Their care and the condition of the parklands fields, significantly improved on recent years due to considerable reticulation to all fields, has meant the ovals are more lush and resilient as we approach winter.

In passing, the School is very fortunate to have the calibre of external sports coaches. While the pedigree of professional coaches, such as Vicki Valk and Peter Sexton have greatly advanced the School’s basketball program, the addition this winter of Gavin Wanganeen, a dual Brownlow medalist and premiership captain, to coach the 1st XVIII, along with Lucas Pantellis, a long term professional soccer player and former Adelaide United Vice-Captain and Australian age representative, are significant influences on the standard of coaching at the School.

2013 Parent & Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) SurveyLater this week you will receive a parent survey via email to gauge parent satisfaction to various aspects of the School’s education of their children and also offer views on the future ICT requirements for students.

The survey will only take about 10 minutes and the School would greatly appreciate your response.

There are eight questions for the satisfaction survey and 11 questions for the ICT survey.

In relation to the ICT survey, Pulteney aspires to be a leader in ICT education. The implementation of a ‘1 to 1 Laptop and iPad program’ in the upper Middle and Senior School for the last three years has been progressive. However, with changes to the ‘Digital Education Revolution’ funding by the Federal Government there are opportunities to define the requirements of a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) program across the School. The intention, since originally recognising that the Federal Government were unlikely to maintain funding, has been to continue to provide flexibility and excellence in ICT resources and education for our students. The networking of the campus, as part of more ICT infrastructure, and the

willingness of the staff to participate in regular professional development have been necessary steps. The capacity to be ‘nimble’ to an ever-changing ICT environment will be assisted by receiving the perspective of parents.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy commenced on Tuesday. The three days of testing involve the Pulteney Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students.

The students are assessed on numeracy, reading, writing and language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar).

I would be confident in presenting a view that the tests, as single assessments, provide some insight to the broader appraisal that a classroom or subject teacher may gain of a student’s relative capabilities.

I wrote, last week, on the importance of teachers who have the qualities that Geoff Masters’ identifies: namely, “a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of their subjects and a deep understanding of how students learn particular subjects”. My previous article attempted to give a distinction to schooling that best represents outstanding teaching where the elements of a NAPLAN assessment are embedded in the daily curriculum of students, yet intended to provide foundations for life-long mastery and a student’s personal responsibility for their learning. I have previously used the analogy, for NAPLAN, of viewing a house by looking through a single window. While one can gain an impression a full viewing of each room is the truest indicator. So too, for all schools and all students the journey of learning best starts prior to school, through each year level of primary and secondary education and, hopefully, post-schooling education. Nonetheless, as anyone reading this article would genuinely appreciate our formal education may provide foundations and structures, habits and encouragement, but the lessons of life take many shapes beyond formal education. It is the sum of the parts of learning that give an understanding and appreciation of life.

The theme of ‘ Inclusion’ will also be incorporated into the ‘Habits of Mind’ concepts that are being introduced at all year levels in the Prep School this year.

The ‘Habits of Mind’ concepts focus on knowing how to behave intelligently when you don’t know the answer. Educational outcomes in traditional settings focus on how many answers a student knows. When we teach for the Habits of Mind we are interested also in how students behave when they don’t know an answer.

Throughout 2013 Mrs Wendy Stewart, who directs the Gifted and Talented focus within the school, will team teach with staff as they encourage the Prep School children to explore the ways in which they think, act and learn on a daily basis.

The four ‘Habits of Mind’ that the children will be encouraged to explore in class in Term 2 are:

I encourage all parents to take the opportunity to discuss the themes of ‘Inclusion’ and the ‘Habits of Mind’ with your children to further their understanding and appreciation of all concepts introduced.

NAPLANNational Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy Testing.

This week, as part of the National Assessment Program, common national tests (NAPLAN tests) were held in literacy and numeracy for all students in Australia at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Testing for Prep students in Year 3 and Year 5 took place over three days.

•Thursday16May–Numeracy.

We consider the NAPLAN testing and associated results to be important, however, they are just one measure of student and school achievement. We are committed to our comprehensive method of reporting to parents on student achievement. Our reporting process outlines the development of each child across all aspects of their education.

Financial LiteracyFinancial Literacy has been integrated into the Prep School’s Mathematics program this term. Units of work will assist the children in their understanding of the fundamentals of financial management, the difference between needs and wants, and the importance of saving and minimising debt.

This important aspect of curriculum is currently outlined in the Economics and Business section of the new Australian Curriculum. This aspect of curriculum is a new focus area in Primary education. The Economics and Business curriculum is currently in draft form but is due to be released in the near future.

To assist in the introduction of this initiative the children in Years 3 and 4 will participate in the Commonwealth Bank ‘Start Smart’ financial literacy program in Week 8.

The ‘Start Smart’ program includes:

Years 3 and 4This ‘Start Smart’ workshop teaches students about earning, saving and spending money. Students also learn to recognise the social pressures that make them want to spend money in thefirstplace.‘CoachCash’–theirpersonalfinancialfitnesstrainer–trainsthemtobecomeelite athletes at managing their finances!

Years 5 and 6Students in Year 5 and 6 will focus on the purpose of simple budgets and the use of Excel spreadsheets to record expenditure. Understanding the value of money and how to get ‘value for money’ will be explored through investigations on mobile phone plans and booking a holiday. Terminology such as interest, debit and credit will be discussed and students will have a chance to look at bank statements.

We invite parents to discuss this important curriculum initiative with their children at home throughout the term.

Pulteney Junior School Disco

The children in the Prep School are getting very excited about the Junior School Disco to be held on Friday 24 May. Information regarding the disco was sent home to parents in Week 1 of the term. Ticket requests are still available through the Prep School office. The theme this year is ‘Sparkles and Stripes’ and students are invited to use their imagination when dressing for the occasion. Justin the DJ will spin fabulous music and there will be lots of prizes to be won. The children are invited to bring along approximately $5.00 to purchase small novelties on the night.

The disco will begin at 7.30pm and conclude at 9.00pm. Families are invited to stay and enjoy a sausage sizzle in the Prep yard. Bar facilities and tea and coffee will also be available. Thank you to Suzanne Brion, Sam Ruff, Pauline Creaser, Michele Kittel, Mark Bourchier and the many parents who have worked so hard to organise this event. It is one of the children’s favourite events of the year!

2013 Oliphant Science Awards The Oliphant Science Awards aim to foster and develop scientific curiosity in young children. The awards enable children to explore science and technology through a variety of avenues including writing, art, photography, experimentation, and new technologies. This is an initiative that the children are asked to complete in their own time.

From the ChaplainHelen Keller is an intriguing character, not least because of her ability to teach us about how we think. She was born in 1880 and at 19 months of age she suffered an illness that left her completely deaf and blind. So she didn’t learn to communicate as most children do.

When Helen was 8 years old her family employed a tutor who taught her to communicate by spelling words into her hand. As Helen was taught to use language, her world opened up. She later recalled what it was like to think before she learned language “if a wordless urging can be called a thought”.

Helen Keller’s story is intriguing because it reminds us that most of our thinking is done using words. Our self-talk is in words. Our relationships with others are based on the shared understandings that we form through words.

It may seem strange that the God of the Universe would present himself to our generation through the text of the Bible. Black ink on a page might seem an ignoble way for God to communicatewithhumanity–untilwerealisethatwordsareourmainwayofcommunicatingwith ourselves and others.

With this in mind, the Bible becomes the ideal way for God to communicate with us. It is personal, permanent and perfectly suited to the way we think.

This is why reading and literacy are such important skills. We improve our ability to think about complex ideas when we increase our literacy. As our reading develops, so do our communication skills. And our ability to know what God would want to say to us.

The Holy Scriptures are able to make you wise. …It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. (2 Tim 3:15-17)

Pulteney wins Anglican Cup 2013

The tradition continued on Wednesday the 8th of May as Pulteney once again for the 9th year in a row hosted the annual Anglican Cup winter sports carnival against Woodcroft College, St Johns Grammar School and Pedare Christian College.

For the first time since the Cups inception, Pulteney was victorious finishing 1st overall. Our previous best result was 3rd.

The day saw Pulteney achieve some fantastic results.

A big thank you goes out to all staff coordinators, coaches and officials for the outstanding organisation of our teams as well as our grounds staff for preparing our ovals and facilities in magnificent condition. Thank you also to the Friends of Pulteney for their support running the BBQ and other facilities on the day.

I look forward to again hosting and winning the Anglican Cup in 2014.

Year 12 Exams In last week’s PRW the exams were listed as beginning the 8th June. This should have read Monday 8th July to 12th.

Schools Mathematics Competition (SMC)This year again we entered a number of students in SMC which is run by MASA (Mathematical Association of SA) and sponsored by SPE (the Society of Petroleum Engineers).

This is one of the more challenging competitions held during the year with only a limited number of awards. Pulteney consistently achieves good results in this competition. There are several divisions. The senior division is for students in Years 11 and 12. An Intermediate division for Years 9 and 10. The Junior division is for Year 8’s and a Primary division for Years 6 and 7.

We congratulate the following students on their excellent achievements in this competition. A total of 10 awards again places us among the most successful schools in this competition. We have gained approximately 5% of the 214 awards presented.

These students are invited to attend a presentation ceremony at Pembroke in June.

TRY-athlonDuring the Holidays, Sanitarium held a TRY-athlon for kids at the North Adelaide Aquatic Centre.

Several Pulteney students passed the finish line. Year 6 students Oscar and Callum were among them.

Year 10 Art - Painting

The book Eat Art curated by the National Gallery of Australia has formed the basis for painting enquiry during Semester I for Year 10 Art students.

One of the exercises undertaken during the course is currently on display in the school’s Administration foyer.

Sushi as food expression is intrinsically linked to the Japanese aesthetic through their predilection for creative and innovative food presentation. The painting students took this aesthetic cue as a starting point for a series of sushi-inspired relief collages.

The students “painted” with overlays of semi-transparent tissue paper, thread, and braid. These intricate visual interpretations were then used to inspire canvas paintings where the transparency of the tissue paper overlays were transposed expressively to underpainting and overpainting techniques.

Venture Club Yorke Peninsula JourneyReflectionAfter travelling 3 ½ hours from Adelaide, we arrived at Corny Point on the Yorke Peninsula and surfed at Berry Bay everyday. The park that we camped at was in close proximity to the surf beach so it was a short trip to maximize the time catching waves! Tenting with two of my close friends was great and we all put in the effort to set the tent up and cook the most amazing meals.

The beaches were extremely beautiful and picturesque, perfect for filming and photographing. The beaches were so tidy and most of the time we were the only people there. There were many different types of native Australian birds around our campsite that woke us up every morning bright and early.

On the morning of Anzac Day we attended a dawn service and walked the streets of Warooka. This was my first dawn service and I enjoyed it very much. It was a new experience and I’m glad that I had the opportunity to go. I’m looking forward to attending a dawn service next year, as I believe it is a nice way of showing our respect towards our fallen soldiers.

This trip was a great opportunity to get to know students in year levels, other than my own, and ultimately make new friendships. I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to surf and meeting new people. It was a great adventurous journey and a good way to finish my part of my Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The only low of the trip was realizing that it eventually had to end. I didn’t want to leave the fun and close connection that I had made with the group.

Auction Idol competition 2013 Congratulations to Grace Nankivell (KM10) and Georgina Bulling (MS10), who this week competed in the 2013 Auction Idol competition. Both girls represented Pulteney in an outstanding manner and are to be commended on their commitment and dedication to their preparation for the competition. Throughout the process, both girls have grown in confidence and developed their communication and public speaking skills to a very high level. The girls have very much enjoyed their time being involved in the competition. A big thank you to leading Adelaide auctioneer, and Old Scholar, Mr Nick Ploubidis, of Professionals Real Estate Norwood, who has coached the girls in the skills of auctioneering over the past 10 weeks. I look forward to Georgina, Grace and any other interested student, being involved in the

competition again in 2014, and hopefully going one step further to make the Grand Final.

University and TAFE Open Days – 16th to 18th AugustOpen days at University and TAFE are a fantastic way for students and their families to explore post-schooling options. This year, Adelaide University, UniSA and Adelaide TAFE, will be open on Sunday 18th August, with Flinders University open on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th August. Please put these dates in your diary, as I would strongly encourage all Year 10, 11 and 12 students, who are considering TAFE and University options, to attend. VET courses for Semester 2Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are practical in nature and allow students to develop skills and explore possible career areas, while gaining SACE credit. Courses are held off-campus and can be either during or after school hours and encompass areas including architectural drafting, fashion design, fitness and hospitality to name a few. If your son/daughter is in Year 10 or 11, and is interested in studying a VET Course in Semester 2, please encourage them to see me as soon as possible to discuss their options. Courses are filled on a ‘first come’ basis and applications are open now.

Year 11 Work Experience – 17th to 21st JuneYear 11 students will undertake work experience in the week following their examinations this term. To prepare students for their placement, they have recently been involved in a workplace health and safety program, which will continue in the coming weeks. In week 5, students will be given their work experience journal, which needs to be completed and submitted on their return to school, along with a ‘final checklist’ to complete before they begin their week of placement. If you have any questions about work experience, please feel free to contact me.

Tax File NumbersStudents thinking of getting a part time job, or Year 12 students thinking of attending university or TAFE in 2014, will require a Tax File Number (TFN). Pulteney is a part of the TFN in schools’ program, and as such, secondary school students (aged at least 13) are able to apply for a Tax File Number by collecting an application form from me.

It is a very comprehensive site and is a good exposure for students interested in a media career. The site features many ABC employees explaining how the ABC operates in News, Television and Radio throughout various programs and departments.

The girls’ soccer team played their first game against Walford, at the beautiful Harriers Pitch. The team impressed the coach (Christie Hillyer) very much, with the their ability to keep fighting, even though they were very obviously exhausted after playing three games at the Anglican Cup that day. The end result was a 1-1 all draw.

Unfortunately Pembroke scored 2 lucky goals in the first half and although we played well with scoring opportunities, we couldn’t get the deficit back, going down 0- 2 Pembroke.

This game was an extended ‘scratch match’, pitting our year 7’s against the year 8’s. The coaches wanted to keep the girls in their respective teams, and although the year 7’s were missing a couple of key players at Netball trials, they competed well. Final score 6-0 to the year 8’s with Tanya Oliver scoring 3 goals. Well done girls, we take on the other teams this week.

Boys Soccer First XI vs Nazareth

With plenty of training sessions and the Anglican Cup under the boys’ belts, to come out and perform well in the higher division this year, was expected. Lukas has got the team working well together and this showed with quick movement and 3 goals in the first half. Unfortunately the concentration slipped and we let some gaps form in our defense, allowing Nazareth back in the game. We salvaged a draw but will be looking for the win this week.

The boys got off to a great start and kept that intensity up for the whole game. On another day the win would have been more comfortable but we just failed to take our chances. Overall though a 3-1 win is a strong start to the season and gives us something to build on.

With some recruiting to the school of new players since last year, the team took a different shape. The boys began well with plenty of movement forwards. Alex was able to get clear on occasions and the midfield ran well all game. Despite most of the play and some narrow misses, we drew 0-0. The defense was rock solid and Tom made 2-3 great saves when Pedare got clear.
