I’M JUST SAYIN’...

PUBLISHER’S NOTEGreetings from REVOLT Leslie & I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that helped kick-off the RSSS this season. The first surf event at Crystal Pier went off without a hitch. Competitors all had a blast & scored new boards, cash, trophies & killer swag from our sponsors. Nothing but smiles & good times. Our team of pho-tographers got some awesome shots of the event. We had some special guests show up & blow up the event with live music too. Check it out on page 22. It was a perfect day, great little waves & yes, we had sun. Don’t worry people the sun will be back, I promise. Happens every now & again, May Grey turns into June Gloom turns into July....What? July Funk? Not sure what it’s called, but trust me, it’ll be gone soon. If you don’t like it, then, yeah, move to Brazil. More room on the beach for us.

Leslie & I have been working hard to get this issue to print. Between photo shoots, fundraising events and prepping for the next RSSS event (*July 17 in OB) we have been burning that candle at both ends. Oh yeah, Leslie’s mother came to visit from AZ. I think she got her fill of SD with that afternoon at the Del Mar Fair. Hope your ankle feels better Jan! Good to see you.

This issue is full of beautiful models & photography, great reviews, gear guides and some interesting interviews with absolutely amazing people. The Andaz in the Gaslamp was so kind as to let us shoot at The Ivy Rooftop for our annual Swimwear Issue. Thanks to Michael, Del & Alexander from Bikini Week for helping out. We got some beautiful shots. Thanks to all our models for a great day.

This issue is also one in a series of venue reviews. We cover everything from restaurants to night-clubs, gyms to surf shops and let’s not forget...BARS THAT DON’T SUCK! This is a great way to show our appreciation to the venues that rise above the rest with exceptional service and products. Hats off to all of you that made our list. Keep up the good work.

Last but not least, let’s all do our part to keep our beaches clean this summer. The folks down in the Gulf of Mexico are dealing with a catastrophe unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Follow their nightmare in our ‘Mother Earth News’ section, and if you can, donate a little. Our next RSSS surf event is at the OB pier on the 17th of July. The Surfrider Foundation and SD Coastkeepers will be on hand at the event to help educate us all on what we can do to help. Members of Slightly Stoopid will be on hand to sign autographs & pass out some tix to their concert that night. Let’s not forget we also have an Issue release party Sat the 17th at Bar West as well. Hmmm. Sounds like a full day & full night. Hope you can all make it down. We’ll see you there. peace, B & L

It all began in high school, armed with his fa-ther’s old Nikon 35mm film camera, a black & white film class, and a lot of crappy pictures. A lot has changed since then. Mike is now taller, for in-stance. He has also since worked with a wide range of designers, mod-els, and agencies in Southern Califor-nia, as well as teaching photography through UCSD. Some of his pictures are actually pretty okay nowadays, when he can remember to remove the lens cap.

ENT MOTHER EARTH NEWS

THE BAD

THE UGLY

THE OIL SPILL UPDATEI know, I know...I wish I didn’t have to hear about it either. But the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is a nation-al nightmare that seems to have no ending. Ev-ery day new details come out that are even more shocking than what we learned the day be-fore. The truth is that life will never be the same in the Gulf of Mexico or for those who live along the Gulf coast.

Nobody seems to be able to stop the leak, and Bp has made the environmental night-mare far worse by dump-ing over a million gallons of highly toxic dispersants into the Gulf (Corexit) U.S. government officials are running around holding press conferences and waiting for Bp to do some-thing.

Meanwhile oil is pouring ashore and toxic gases are being detected at very alarming levels. The big-gest environmental disas-ter in U.S. history is also quickly becoming one of the biggest economic

disasters and potentially one of the biggest public health disasters.

• It is being reported that the deepsea oil plumes are creating huge “dead zones” where all creatures are dying as they are de-prived of oxygen. If this oil spill continues to grow

could the vast majority of the Gulf of Mexico be-come one gigantic “dead zone”?

• The massive oil skim-ming vessel called A Whale has just completed

a 2 day testing. Re-sults? Inconclusive

• Senator Bill Nel-son of Florida says that there are re-ports that there are additional ruptures in the sea floor from which oil is leaking.

• The current worst-case estimate of what’s spewing into the Gulf is about 2.5 million gallons a day. Anywhere from 68.5 million to 130 million gal-lons have spilled since the April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 workers and blew out the well 5,000 feet underwater.

Just when you thought the damages Bp could cause was limited to beaches, marshes, oceans, people’s livelihoods, birds and marine life, there’s more. Bp’s favorite dispersant Corexit 9500 is be-ing sprayed at the oil gusher on the ocean floor. Corexit is also being air sprayed across hundreds of miles of oil slicks all across the gulf. There have been widespread reports of oil cleanup crews reporting various injuries including respiratory distress, dizzi-ness and headaches.

Because it is so incred-ibly toxic, the UK’s Ma-rine Management Orga-nization has completely banned Corexit 9500, so if there was a major oil spill in the UK’s North Sea, Bp would not be able to use it. So why is Bp being allowed to use Corexit 9500 in the Gulf of Mexico?

It is being reported that 2.61 parts per mil-lion of Corexit 9500 (mixed with oil at a ratio of 1:1o) is lethal to 50% of fish ex-posed to it within 96 hours. That means that 1 gallon of Corexit 9500/oil mixture is capable of rendering 383,141 gallons of water highly toxic to fish. If these disper-sants are so incredibly toxic to fish, what are they going to do to crops? What are they going to do to people? In fact, you

could hardly find a more dangerous com-bination of poisons to dump into the Gulf of Mexico than what has been revealed in Corexit. The Corexit 9527 product has been designated a “chronic and acute health hazard” by the EpA. It is made with

2-butoxyethanol, a highly toxic chemi-cal that has long been linked to

the health problems of clean-up crews who worked on the Exxon Valdez spill.

A newer Corexit recipe dubbed the “9500 formula”

contains dioctyl sodium sul-fosuccinate, a detergent chemical that’s also found in laxatives. What do you suppose happens to the marine ecosystem when

fish and sea turtles ingest this chemical through their

gills and skin? And just as importantly, what do you think happens to the hu-man beings who are working around this chemical, breathing in its fumes and touching it with their skin?

The answers are currently unknown, which is exactly why it is so inexcusable that Nalco and the oil industry giants would for so long refuse to disclose the chemical ingredients they’re dumping into the Gulf of Mexico in huge quantities (over a million gallons dumped into the ocean to date).

• Joe Barton, a Texas congressman and the highest-ranking Republi-can on the Energy and Commerce Committee, decided to apologize to -- wait for it -- Bp chief executive Tony “I’d like my life back” Hayward during a hearing on Capitol Hill.. He has since withdrawn his appology and said he ‘miss-spoke’. I’ll say! Another moron.

• Not much ‘Good’ in all this, with the exception of anyone that is actually IN the Gulf of Mexico helping to clean up this catastrophy. Let’s give a shout out to a few celebrities with good intentions. Kevin Costner has invested in a project that has created a centrifuge that separates oil from seawater, and three of his machines are presently being used and 32 more have been ordered by Bp. Troy Aikman & Drew Bledsoe have also stepped forward with similar machines.

• Director James Cameron was snubbed when he offered advice and assistance from a private team of deep-sea experts with whom he has worked on many underwater filming projects and exploration efforts. Thanks but No thanks was Bp’s answer. The Titanic and Avatar director responded by saying that the people at Bp are “morons.”

• Tony Hayward, the British energy giant’s recently ousted CEO, drew fire from the White House for having gone to a glitzy yacht race off England’s shore, a leisure trip that further infuriated residents of the oil-stained Gulf Coast. His Yacht ‘Bob’ finished fourth. Tony finished 1st in the ‘Asshole of the Year’ Award. I would try to hide too...

Tar & feather the bastard!

IN A RELATED NOTE...About three miles off the coast of Alaska, BP is moving ahead with a potentially record-setting project to drill two miles under the sea and then six to eight miles horizontally to reach what is believed to be a 100 million-barrel reservoir of oil under federal waters.

JUST WHAT THE HELL IS IN COREXIT?The Toxic Chemical Dispersant BP Dumps On The Oil Spill

THE GOOD

• In an effort to keep oil off the shores of four states, BP and the U.S. Coast Guard have been burning off some of the oil - and turtles floating on lines of seaweed are getting caught and burned along with the oil, says Captain Ellis. Captain Mike Ellis is certain that when BP and the U.S. Coast Guard set fire to spilled oil on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico to keep it from reaching shore, endangered sea turtles are also being burned - alive. “The Coast Guard and Bp wouldn’t let us go in there to rescue turtles,” he said. “They gave us coordinates to stay out of an area of about 12 by 13 miles. They just didn’t want anyone out there.”

• Reports are coming in that surfers were coming out of the water with skin irritations, chemical burns and skin rashes. More than a dozen workers have been treated at local medical centers for flu-like symptoms ranging from chest pain to dizziness, nausea and headaches, presumably due to exposure to different chemicals emanating from the slick, according to news reports.

• The government raised its estimate of the oil flow rate yet again, declaring that as much as 60,000 barrels of oil could be flowing into the Gulf every day. A barrel of oil holds 42 gallons, so an amount equivalent to the Exxon Valdez disaster could be flowing into the Gulf of Mexico every four days.

• Oil and tarballs have started washing up as far away from the spill as Florida AND TEXAS. You still have to clean tar off your feet after surfing or walking on the beaches in Santa Barbara. That spill happened almost a decade ago and it was just a fraction of the size of the Gulf of Mexico spill.

• Total containment of the gushing well is not foreseen untill the relief wells are completed sometime in August

• “The LAWYERS are coming! The LAWYERS are coming!

HEY!

GRAVITY The KalaiEngineered over the past 2 years, this board is ready. The Kalai has several advantages over similar boards that really make it shine. Instead of working with all bamboo, they used a blend of bamboo and cross ply maple. You can really feel the difference that this composite makes in the higher rebound flex. Enjoy the ride. 269. - complete. www.gravityboard.com

WOODSTOCK’S PIZZA1221 Garnet AvenueSan Diego, CA 92109858.642.6900

Undeniably, one of our favorite new places to hang out with friends, watch some cool sports, and eat amazing pizza (and awesome salads). But did you know that they also offer something else exceptional? LATE NIGHT DELIVERY? If walking in and having a slice (or three) after a long night of clubbing on Garnet is not convenient enough (open till 3 on Thurs-Sat) Then why not have the whole pizza delivered hot & fresh to your door?

Woodstock’s has a great history dating back to the 80’s. Anyone that went to school at SDSU, Chico State, Cal-poly, UC Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, knows the pizza at Woodstock’s is LEGENDARY! It was 1977 when Chuck Woodstock, opened the first Woodstock’s Pizza in Corvallis, Oregon. Chuck, along with Mike Chew and Jeff Ambrose Chuck and Chew, with Jeff as their General Manager and co-owner, began with a simple formula that continues to this day. They wanted to create a fun, student-oriented atmosphere, and to offer classic pizzas that surpassed anything they’d tried elsewhere. One of Chuck’s innovations was to put sauce in the folded-over crust. He also insisted on putting more toppings on the pizza than any of his competitors did. Ideally, you should get a taste of every topping in each bite of a Woodstock’s pizza. Sadly, Chuck and Chew passed away in a private plane accident in 1985, but their legacy continues at Woodstock’s. In 2001 Jeff and Laura Ambrose purchased Woodstock’s from the Woodstock and Chew families. So Jeff, who began as Chuck’s delivery driver in Corvallis, ultimately became owner of all five California Woodstock’s.

Although the ownership has changed, the founding principles remain the same. The dough is still handmade each day, they still use Chuck’s secret sauce recipe & insist on using the freshest ingredients available. They teach every employee to make each pizza as if it were for their best friend. Seriously, you can taste the difference. Woodstock’s doesn’t look or feel like a chain because it Isn’t. It’s a family of restaurants run by a team of co-owners. The décor is warm, comfortable and genuine. You won’t find any pre-fabricated funkiness, and you definitely won’t find anything slick or trendy, just great food & good times. Revolt In Style welcomes Woodstock’s Pizza to Pacific Beach with... OFFICIALLY ENDORSED!

When we say we like to eat somewhere, there is only one reason why. We actually frequent the location, love the food and stand by our review. We are constantly trying out new restaurants, but these are our favorite casual dining spots and we want you to enjoy them as well. So, as we all know, Ya Gotta Eat! But at least eat great food. Here are the venues that Revolt In Style officially endorse. Bon Appetit.

BULL TACO1815 South Coast HighwayOceanside, CA 92054760.453.2103

Famous among surfers, Bull Taco was tucked away in the San Elijo Campgrounds for years. If you weren’t in the know, you missed out on epic grinds...untill now. The new Oceanside location is now open right on the 101! The best way to finish off a North County surf ses-sion is to grab a couple of their insane tacos or burritos. perfect seasoning on the carne asada, tender chicken burritos and ‘off the hook’ carnitas. This place can do no wrong! We never drive by without stopping off for a quick bite. The owners know what they’re doing, as they also have a nice selection of beer & wine to compliment the food, without breaking the bank. Stepping up this season as the food sponsor for the Revolt Summer Surf Series, they are responsible for fueling all our athletes and crew. Here at Revolt In Style, we absolutely endorse... BULL TACO.

The best kept secret in Pacific Beach is about to spread to the rest of San Diego. The new owner (Billy) has updated the staff, the menu and the tequila selection. He added a half dozen or so flatscreens and generally changed the place into a clean version of North pB’s ‘Cheers’. Every night the place is full of patrons enjoying the excellent array of menu items and nightly specials or milling around the bar catching up on the local gossip & listening to Billy’s selection of greatest hits. His ‘Facebook Fan Appreciation’ nights are a great reason to come out, meet some old friends & make some new ones. Note: Try some of the house ‘Infused vodka’. The blueberry flavored is a personal favorite. Also, let Billy suggest a shot of one of his many choices of Tequilas. He never misses!

Bar West offers an exciting and unpredictable schedule of live performances by some of today’s most innovative and ground-breaking DJ’s! One thing you can predict is that Bar West and their team of promoters consistently supplies San Diego’s most beautiful nightclub goers with a high-energy good time. The beach has limited access to a quality ‘club environment’ This is the answer (minus the douchebags) From “The pole” to “The pit”, Bar West pulses with life. Two bars and two dance floors equal four times the fun. The dining room is open Thurs-Sun 6-10pm and the menu features unexpected culinary hits like: Jerk Chicken Kabobs, Garlic Criss-Cut Fries, Kobe Beef Sliders and more. We get it! Your time is valuble and your money has to go further than ever before. The last thing you want to do is wind up at a joint full of knuckleheads, paying a small fortune for weak drinks & even weaker food. We spend a lot of time checking out the bars in San Diego. Sampling what they have to offer, meeting the owners, managers & staff, and generally taking the guesswork out of the whole process for you. Sometimes they suck, sometimes they don’t. EMERALD CITY1118 Orange AvenueCoronado, CA 92118(619) 435-6677

Emerald City has been Coronado’s go-to surf and skate shop since 1988. Although it thrived even during the economic down turn, owners Kelly and Larry Kraus decided to expand their products and services by restoring their Main Street store.

Emerald City The Boarding Source is a cutting edge surf and skate shop that offers hundreds of surfboards, skateboards, and stand-up paddleboards (SUp) to buy and rent. The store also boasts an array of men, women, and kids beach apparel and accessories. All that plus surfing and SUP lessons gives Emerald City a reputation for being a one-stop-shop for the community’s board riding needs—especially with their renovated store.

In remodeling Emerald City, the Kraus brothers wanted the new building to mesh with the environment while not losing its original appeal. To walk through the front door and see the original high arched ceiling, built from old growth and rough sawn lumber, it’s obvious they nailed it. “We wanted to go green wherever possible,” said Kelly Kraus. “We added solar panels on the roof and expect them to reduce our electric bill by at least 80%. We also salvaged wood from the ceiling and used it throughout the interior design and as our dressing room doors. They look sick and are functional.

The nearly 3,000-square-foot display area will be used to exhibit larger than life photos and art—surf and skate inspired, of course. The centerpiece of the display is a 14’ X 26’ mural by surf photographer Aaron Chang. All can be admired from the street through the new arched display windows. Jules Wilson lead the design of the project.

LONG HARD RIDE is Back! The much anticipated grand re-opening on Garnet Ave. is finally here. Fashion that’s real! Yeah, real cool and real affordable. The brands carried in this store are as true to the pB lifestyle as the sports they represent. Surf, Skate, Snow, MX & MMA. You want it, they carry it. You want to stay true to the sport, then you need the right fashions. plus great accessories, shoes, boards & now...the official distribution location for powerBalance in pB. Long Hard Ride, the action sports apparel brand is a metaphor for life and the way they live it. “We’re not just a store, we’re a lifestyle” says it all. They’re creating a network of dedicated followers (and leaders) thru their team riders, social networking and insane events happening on a regular basis. Check out the new location on your next trip down Garnet, you won’t be disappointed. www.longhardride.net

Here is a sample of some of the newest businesses that we have come across. When other businesses slowed down or dissapeared, these guys stepped up & re-modeled, re-invented and re-invested in San Diego. We support these outstanding businesses and we hope you do as well.

“Another goal of the remodel was to expand the store’s branding to attract travelers from across the bridge,” said Larry Kraus. Rather than use cookie-cutter signage given to them by vendors, the Kraus brothers took a grass roots approach by promoting surf and skate in-spired art. They plan to host art shows at least once a quarter, eventually monthly, with a continually evolving “look” inside the store.

To further boost its core market promotions, Emerald City will sponsor a strong team of surfers and skaters from the area. Many riders are already established in the local art scene, and will contribute to the store’s rotat-ing galleries. “As excited as I am about our re-opening of the store,” said Kelly, “The groms are even more psyched. We were kid-central in Coronado before the closing—now they’re tugging on my sleeve asking when we will reopen.” www.emeraldcitysurf.com

On Saturday June 12, 2010 the surfing community decended on the beach just north of Crystal pier to once again partake in San Diego’s favorite grassroots surfing challenge, The RSSS 4.0. The days leading up to the event were of the typical & dreary ‘June gloom’ type. The surf was small and cold. The local news was grim and depressing forecasting more of the same. BUT NO! Once again the Surf Gods took pity on the youth in revolt and gave up some solid surf with clear blue skies and a mild offshore breeze. The contestants of the Revolt Sum-mer Surf Series were supplied an epic day for competition. Rid-ers showed up in droves from as far away as South America, Australia and Hawaii. San Diego surfers from both north and south county represented the majority of the 100 plus riders. Last year’s champ Eric McHenry was on hand to defend his title and do his best to secure the ‘Three-peat’. Josh Sleigh took the spotlight around noon for his high energy Sleigh Winch demo. Josh & his crew amazed the crowd with their insane antics showing off the latest tricks and maneuvers with his sig-nature machine.

The event attracted thousands of spectators that were treated to live music from recording artist Main Flow and pauli ‘Apaulo’ Kipling as well as Justin Werner. Their set was a taste of their performance later that day at Qualcom Stadium, where they performed for the ‘Hope for Haiti’ fundraiser with other artists in-cluding p.O.D. CalSound.com’s resident Dj’s Sasha & Shoosh were on hand all day performing superfly sets to give the whole event an unforgettable soundtrack and upbeat vibe.

photos by Jeromy HansenWHERE THERE’S A WINCH, THERE’S A WAY

Josh Sleigh is the man behind (and out in front of) The Sleigh Winch. Josh and his machine are well known by athletes imbedded in action sports....not so much by the general public. The Winch can be a substitute for waves at the beach or a tow for ‘Lift Less’ snowboarders. You can use it (instead of a boat) in the bays, lakes or rivers. You can use it in a flat parking lot filled with a few inches of water for the coolest rail jam around. Leave it up to the ingenuity and imagination of a few adrenaline starved stunt junkies to come up with the latest and greatest

use for the Sleigh Winch.

For most of you the easiest way to see the machine in action, is at any one of the Revolt Summer Surf Series events. Josh Sleigh has been showing up and running professional Winch demos at the RSSS events for the past few years. Always a crowd pleaser, these demo’s get the crowd on their feet. Although the sport definitely has room for error, Josh and his posse of professionals run every one of their demos with the mindset of ‘safety first’. The crowd is strictly controlled and the water is closely monitored while one rider at a time demonstrates the absolute balls-out capabilities of the Sleigh Winch. To see a rider towed at a high speed toward the oncoming waves, release, then knock the top off a wave like no other or boost amazing heights off the wave, is nothing shy of...sick.

The Sleigh Winch has an adjustable hand throttle allowing you to vary the towing speed, a hydraulic brake for quick and easy stops/safety and a rope friendly roller system allowing you to tow from almost any forward angle The Sleigh Winch is designed to fit a 2” receiver hitch on any vehicle and also comes ready for bottom side wheel mounts. Meaning it can be set up just about anywhere you can imagine.

The Sleigh Winch towing device has been designed with a 6.5, 7 & 9 hp gasoline engines in mind and a drive clutch that exceeds the usual 1:1 ratio of a standard operating system, allowing for a 90:1 overdrive. Which makes it ideal for deep-water starts. It can run all-day on about a gallon of fuel. The spool can hold up to 2,000 feet of high tension polypropylene line and is fitted with a wake-board or water ski type handle. The housing is all aluminum but can also be ordered in steel.

They’re not really a new idea, but winches are going to straight blow up in 2010. Why? Because guys like Josh Sleigh. Desperate times call for desperate measures and if you can’t afford a boat, then you’re going to have to figure out another way to get yer shred on.

RIS Josh who is in your crew these days?JS Depends on who’s town. Lately I’ve been winching/riding with my younger half brother Gabe Homan & his crew. Or a couple other cats like Charlie Ste-vens & Josh Buran. From time to time I get calls from some wakeskaters like Nick Taylor or Reed Hanson. Which, I am stoked! Cause these guys all rip, are young & responsible & know how to ride hard. So for the Sleigh Winch brand & getting direct feedback on designs. I could not be more thankful. It’s enabling me to build a solid product with performance in mind & get pushed hard as an athlete.

RIS What are the latest updates on you machine / business?Right now, I’m getting ready to go to market. So I’m really excited. And that entails a lot & I am working a full time job to boot. And of course putting a lot effort towards the RSSS events. You guys have enable me to show everyone how safe winching really is. I keep pushing hard for this great new sport, it’s the future for high octane surf events.

RIS How does the RSSS locations compare with other spots? It’s really a special set up. Just the atmosphere alone. Having a pier to winch off of is about as good as it gets. Plus, the people on the pier... as you come flying out to the wave. Hearing them scream with excitement makes you just want to push it that much harder, you know, to try things you usually might not try at a surfing event. The RSSS I feel is ahead of all other surf events by having winch surfing. It’s about as forward & into the future as you can get.

RIS What is the craziest thing you’ve done w/ the Winch so far?I don’t know about crazy, but in terms of what you can do with the winch its limitless. Snow, Surf, Wake, Skate, you name it. If you have one you can enjoy these sports. So, to me, that’s the craziest part about winching. That & just setting up & watching your bro’s tear things apart on days you normally would not ride, is crazy!

RIS what is the latest thing you want to do with the Sleigh Winch? For me its just getting things rolling with the brand. Coordinating/ riding heaps of events with all things boarding. And really pushing the event side.

RIS How have the police & lifeguards reacted so far! They’ve acted accordingly. Its a new sport & they are curious. But everyone that’s witnessed it gets really excited & intrigued. It just blows ‘em away due to it just being so simple. It really is an amazing thing to witness. pLus, I want those guys around & I want to bring them business & have them come enjoy us & the sport & its progression. Not to forget, giving back to good causes & charities by doing cool events with demo’s to attract people that might not care about board sports.

RIS Cost? Where can I get one?Right now you can go to Sleigh Winch.Com. Excuse the mess as I’m constantly changing & updating things as I go along. You might have to make a phone call & talk with me personally :) And as far as price goes they are $2100. - but that’s with all the bells & whistles. I’m also working on some cheaper designs to make it more affordable in the future.

RIS Last but not least- I know you have a new addition to the Sleigh fam-ily. what’s it like to be a dad?It is the best thing life has to offer. I wish I would of done it sooner. It makes life so much more colorful. And I am super excited & even more driven it seems now to live & push life to that next successful level - what ever it might be. And for me that is Sleigh-Winching my brains out for years to come :)

JAMIE STERLINGConstantly Following The “Endless Winter”

BORN: 3-18-81HOME: North Shore, OahuSTANCE: goofyfootHEIGHT: 5’8WEIGHT: 150 lbs.

Jamie is and has always been a big wave hunter. He made a name for himself as a North Shore grom charging some of the biggest waves around. Now he travels the world in search of the biggest waves. With 14 years of traveling the globe in search of the endless winter, Jamie Sterling has become not only an elite big wave surfer, but also a pro-fessional world traveler & surf guide.

Spending half the year in his hometown on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii; and the other half chasing the biggest swells around the plan-et. From South Africa to the Arctic Circle, Jamie Sterling has surfed ev-erything in between. He’s tackled the Cortez Bank, Jaws, Mavericks, Dungeons, Teahupoo, Todos Santos, the Chilean monsters El Buey and El Bajo, and towed in on every outer reef on the North Shore. Instead of just building a relationship with one wave, he’s traveled around the world, constantly trying to predict where the next big wave will happen, a mission he’s dubbed “The Endless Winter.”

Check this! You can actually hire Jamie to travel with you pretty much anywhere in the world for the most dialed in surf experience possible. Don’t blow your next surf vacation looking at surf reports, figuring out the surf breaks or just trying not to get beat up by the locals. Let Jamie do that, just be ready for a total surf adventure with one of the best professional surf guides on the planet.

Recently Jamie was here in San Diego for the Red Bull Rivals event at Ocean Beach. He took some time out of his busy schedule to allow us to pick his brain:

RIS: What’s your summer schedule like?

JS: I just got back from Chile where I placed 4th at the contest. My main goal is to do well on the tour that Gary Linden formulated. 4 stops in peru is next. We’re waiting to see when. There’s a 2-month window on these contests, so I’m heading back to Hawaii to train for a little bit. Then off to Mexico to film in Puerto Escondido, we are going to be working on the GoPro point of view filming, and then work on some webisodes for Red Bull, and my other sponsors. I’m also collecting some more footage for a movie we are putting together, which is a re-cap of my professional surfing career. I’m competing in a contest there in July.

RIS: You were injured recently. What happened and are you ok?

JS: Yeah, I hurt my shoulder free surfing in Waimea beach, Hawaii last November 09’. It gave me some trouble at Maverick’s this year, but it feels great now. I’m back to 100%. I’m just stoked to be able to pursue my goals, and live the dream.

INTE

RVIE

W

RIS: Is big wave surfing just a winter sport?

JS: No, it’s a year around career for me. Basically I have an end-less winter. I spend October thru April in Hawaii, California, and Oregon. Come April I put everything in storage and live out of a suit case for 6 months and travel the Southern hemisphere for their winter. I head to places like Chile, Tahiti, South Africa, Mexico, and Australia.

RIS: Out of all the breaks, what is your favorite spot to surf?

JS: For me, it’s Mexico. I like to spend a lot of time in puerto Es-condido, it reminds me of Hawaii. The water’s warm, and the fish taco’s are cheap. My goal when I’m not traveling so much is to build a home down there. I want to live 6 months there, and 6 month in Hawaii.

RIS: Sounds like the life.

JS: Yeah, it’s a good retirement plan.

RIS: Let’s talk about the charities & causes that you’re in-volved with. JS: While I was down in Chile I had a chance to work with the ‘Save the Waves Coalition’ and help the relief efforts after the earthquake and tsunami that happened in February. The town of Constitución

was severely damaged and was a mess. It looked way worse than what we were seeing on the news back in the states. Quiksilver and Cliff Bar sent clothes and energy bars down to Chile and we distributed them to school kids and other relief organizations such as the Red Cross, who were helping to rebuild the town. I’m also in-volved in helping to stop a marina project that threatens two break points, El Gringo and El Buey in Arica, Chile.

RIS: Would you like to give a shout out to anyone, your spon-sors?

JS: Definitely, without my sponsors I wouldn’t be able to live the dream and fulfill my goals. Red Bull, who has been there for me for the last 11 years. Kaenon Sunglasses, Rusty Surfboards, Gopro, Future Fins, and EFX. They have all made this possible for me. So THANKS A LOT.

Side Note: We are happy to announce that local surfers in Chile are celebrating a victory against the breakwater construction proj-ect that threatened the big-wave surf of El Buey in Arica, Chile. The project is not yet completely defeated, local beach advocates keeping a close watch on developments with this issue, and expert environmental lawyers are engaged with the issue together with local surfers and civic leaders. Donavan Brown, a pre-med graduate from the Uni-versity of Northern Colorado and two-time NCAA football champion, is quickly reinventing the way fitness professionals train themselves and their cli-ents. Ropes, Indoboards, Slacklines, Swiss Balls, Kettlebells, BodyBlades, Gravity Systems, MMA, Bouldering and TRX Suspension Training are just a handful of the exercise modalities the founder of Zendiego Fitness uses to teach his trainers and cli-ents how to make exercise truly FUNctional.

Having been a competitive athlete for most of his life, Donavan boasts a handful of accolades start-ing as a high school USA Today All-American and All-Colorado team captain. After graduating col-lege and leaving behind a successful athletic ca-reer, he ventured to Southern California to pursue his passion for physique augmentation at the world famous Gold’s Gym Venice Beach, CA. Instantly falling in love with board sports and the “SoCal life-style”, he pulled himself out of the gym, and onto every type of board he could find. Surf, snow, skate, wake, you name it. A knee injury or two from wakeboarding and Jiu-Jitsu, a broken ankle from skateboarding, while simultaneously battling a plethora of injuries remaining from the football years had Donavan spending hundreds of hours in local Yoga studios, and getting to know his physical therapist quite well.

Not willing to give up, or to sit on the beach while the other bros and babes carved away, Donavan put to-gether a personal training system which he feels will benefit the advanced athlete, weekend warrior and desk jockey alike. Combining elements of Yoga, pi-lates, Gyrokinesis, physical Therapy, Bodybuilding, Team Sports, Cycling, Climbing, Martial Arts and of course Board Sports. He teaches his trainers and clients to engage in physical activities that promote awareness while improving balance, coordination, proprioception, strength and flexibility. “As train-ers or “coaches”, we have to provide an element of entertainment to keep our clients coming back for more, while constantly challenging the mind-body connection.” Donavan prefers to promote land based training for those days when you just can’t get to the ocean, or portable fitness tools you can use to warm-up in your cabin before hitting the slopes.

“My theory is: make the workout fun. I create workouts you’d want to do while

hanging out in your living room”

If you’d like a sample of these fun and effective workouts, please call Donavan at 619-787-7375 to setup an intro. A few lessons is all it might take to put you on a fast-track to surfing stronger and play-ing longer.

Making It To The SandA Surfer’s Personal Story of Triumph over Adversitywords by Allison Arteagaphotos by Jeffrey Guillotte (unless noted)

The action sports community is unfortunately no stranger to tragedy, and perhaps no single incident has demonstrated that more poi-gnantly than the unprovoked 2007 Murder of beloved 24-year-old local pro surfer Emery Kauanui. Last November tragedy struck the surf/skate community once again. On the evening of November 20,

2009, talented 21-year-old ASP surfer Brian Guillotte attended a casual party at an East San Diego house. Before the evening was over, Guillotte, just like Kauanui would wind up laying in a hospital fighting for his life.

Other than the few friends he showed up with, Guillotte didn’t know many people there, but everything seemed to be going fine until one of the residents of the house pulled him aside. The man told Guillotte to leave immediately, because his clothes, made by an energy drink brand, were offensive to the owners of the house, who were fans of a competing energy drink. Guillotte mistook the man’s ridiculous threat for a joke and tried to laugh it off, which only further enraged him. And despite a gut feeling that told him to leave, Guillotte stayed at the party a little while longer before saying his goodbyes and then quietly heading for his car. But he never made it home. The same guy who had confronted him earlier recruited a friend, and both men were waiting outside to ambush Guillotte as he left. “I remember looking at my car and feeling something super weird hit my face, and then I remember seeing the ground,” Brian said. “I was in total disbelief, and then everything was just darkness. I was done.”

As he struggled to compose himself, Guillotte, still on his hands and knees was struck again. A second assailant came from behind and landed a powerful blow to the back of his head; Brian’s skull connected with the concrete and all turned to darkness. Having rendered Guillotte unconscious, the second assailant began ruthlessly bludgeoning the defenseless athlete’s head. Blood and vomit poured from Brian’s mouth and became lodged in his throat. Alone, unconscious and at the mercy of his attackers, Brian Guillotte was choking to death.

Having caused a commotion, Brian’s assailants then attempted to conceal his lifeless body in the back yard of the house; time was running out for Brian.

As fate would have it, an alert neighbor and registered nurse, miraculously passed by the scene. Springing into action, she summoned paramedics and Brian was transported to a local hospital. It was there that doctors discovered the extent of his injuries and notified his family that his most difficult fight lay ahead - Brian‘s brain was hemorrhaging.

It was three days before Brian’s eyes would open again, but his body and motor skills had been devastated. He was unable to speak and incapable of standing on his own. “It was tough, I had no use of my legs; couldn’t even talk and just the week earlier I was getting so stoked about my first year getting to do QS events and preparing.” Whether Brian would ever be able to fully function again, much less surf was unclear. Brian would have to undergo a lengthy period of therapy, slowly attempting to utilize his once-athletic body. “Life was at a standstill for me,” he recalls, “not being able to feed myself at Thanksgiving Dinner was...unreal.”

While Brian struggled with his injuries, criminal investigators were encountering a wall of silence, with witnesses refusing to fully cooperate. Despite a positive identification of his assailants, the San Diego District Attorney’s office failed to prosecute any of Brian’s at-tackers; having nearly beaten a promising young athlete to death and attempting to hide his body, the three men walked away unscathed.

As he slowly began to put together the pieces of his attack, Guillotte couldn’t help but think about fellow surfer Emory Kauanui, and whose tragic story could so easily have

INSP

E

been his own. “I couldn’t believe that I got to wake up, and it was more than heavy for me to think that he never got that chance,” Guillotte said. “Sometimes you need to have something really bad happen to you to make you realize how lucky you are.” Just weeks after awakening from his coma, Brian, still severely im-paired, took an extraordinary step: “I got my name in the first ASp event I could.” It was an audacious action, and though a bit unrealistic, it was typical of Brian’s competitive spirit. “I only had two months and I still couldn’t really even walk or drive a car,” recalls Guillotte. Even as his physicians counseled restraint and plenty of rest, Brian’s determined spirit could not be contained: “getting the chance to see my mom when i woke up in the hospital and the motivation to surf made my recovery time shocking to all my doctors.”

Day by day, his condition improved. “Surfing was all that I focused on day and night,” he said. “And I decided that any little thing I could do to better myself I would do. I never thought about my injury or how I couldn’t do things; all I thought about was what I was going to do.”

As the sun rose over Huntington Beach on March 22, all eyes were on the marquee surfers who had gathered to compete in the Vans pier Classic. Few of the hundreds of spectators and high-profile media outlets stopped to notice the humble blonde-haired surfer quietly making his way to the beach. Few could understand how close he had come to death or appreciate the hurdles he had crossed just to take those steps, as the competitors names were called. Brian Guillotte had come to compete.

Still having mild seizures and only a two weeks time of preparing, Brian made it after saying, “the feeling of be ing alive; just mak-ing it to the sand on that day was a better feeling than winning that whole event” recounts Brian. As might be expected, Brian drawing East Coast Titan Ben Bourgeois in an early heat was elimated. Ben blasting the days highest single wave score of a 9.00 and followed it up with an 8.65 to clinch the days highest heat total as well .

The Vans pier Classic was a triumph for Guillotte, and now that he’s surfing consistently once again, he said his life is finally starting to return to normal. But at times normalcy still feels like an incomplete victory to Brian. Detectives were unable to build a strong enough case against the pair of men who viciously at-tacked him, and as a result neither of them will ever see jail time. But life goes on for Brian Guillotte, and although he may never get the justice he deserves, he has found a new strength and gained faith in his ability to overcome whatever obstacles life throws at him

“I’m back and I’ve never had a better outlook on life,” he said. “I’m not taking anything for granted. Emery may not be here with us today, but he was there for me through all of this; I wouldn’t be where I am today without the motivation Emery’s story gave me.”

LIVE Streaming Cameras Save Time and Gas Utilizing High Tech ‘Surf Check’ in San DiegoSeems like cameras are going up everywhere from MMA gyms to major surf breaks and everywhere in between. If you have been around the ‘www’ long enough, most will remember the webcam craze of the late 90’s. Where live cams were either a grainy image of a bird nest in someone’s backyard or worse yet, a shirtless character in front of his computer.

The good news is much has changed in the past 10 years with live “network based” cameras. It is now common to see cameras with full user controls in real time in High Definition 720p resolution with full screen, full frame rate. The days of compromised slow and choppy live video is now behind the new generation of content hungry web users.

With increased popularity some of the these “newer” live streaming cameras are becoming a daily must see by surfers, skiers, would-be tourists and just about anybody looking to save some travel time by being able to check things out remotely.

HD RELAY supplied the “birds eye view” of the first RSSS event at Crystal Pier on June 12. Be sure to log onto www.revoltinstyle.com and check the new Ocean Beach Cam for the sec-ond RSSS event on July 17.

Technology TrendsFirst let’s review how these cameras work so we can understand more about where this technology is going.

Many of the popular social cameras use a simple USB webcam attached to a desktop com-puter these systems are designed for indoor studios and other venues. The bigger more advanced live camera networks are found mostly outdoors and tend to be more permanent.

Setting up one of these requires fast upload connections to the Internet and usually a hosting service capable of handling 100’s of thousands of visitors to the camera (see www.hdrelay.com). These live cameras can be very advanced or rather simple but for the professional business owner most opt for to have pan, tilt and very powerful zoom optical capabilities.

Here some of the new, eco friendly, gas saving, sponsored live cameras right here in our back yard.

PROF

ILECRISSANTOS THE BADDEST WOMAN ON THE PLANETBy Taff Davies

For those of you who follow MMA, you probably al-ready know who she is. But if you don’t know, you should, because this 25 year old Brazilian is the best female fighter on the planet. She is currently the Strikeforce Women’s 145 lb Champion and is

the #1-ranked 145-pound female fighter according to the Unified Women’s MMA Rankings.

Always an elite athlete, she previously competed as a nationally ranked handball player in Brazil. But then she was discovered by Rudimar Fedrigo, owner and head trainer of the Chute Boxe Acad-emy. Chute Boxe is the famous Brazilian fight gym that launched the careers of other famous Brazilian fighters, including Wanderlei Silva, Shogun Rua, Anderson Silva, and more, including fellow Strikeforce fighter Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos.

Evangelista met Cris at the Chute Boxe Academy and later married her, sharing his nickname with her as well as a wealth of experience. She turned Pro as an MMA fighter at the age of 19 and has racked up 10 straight wins for a record of 10-1. She first came on the mainstream MMA radar when she made her United States MMA debut on July 26, 2008 against Shayna Baszler, a protégé of MMA heavyweight Josh Barnett. Cris won the fight in the second round, TKO’ing Baszler in the second round.

Cris then went on to make a huge statement to the MMA world when she TKO’d the popular Gina Carano in the first round on August 15, 2009 to capture the Strikeforce Women’s World Featherwight Title. It was also a significant moment in sports history, since it was the first time a major promotion had featured a main event between women.

She then defended her title against Dutch submission specialist Mar-loes Coenen at Strikeforce on January 30, 2010, winning the fight via TKO at 3:40 of round 3.

On June 26 in San Jose, CA, she defended her Strikeforce title for the second time. The results were predictable. She destroyed her oppo-nent Jan Finney, dishing out one of the worst beatings in MMA history before the fight was mercifully ended with a TKO in the 2nd round.

Besides her incredible striking, Cris is also an excellent grappler. She recently competed in the ADCC, the highest level submission grap-pling tournament in the world. So whether you are on your feet or on your back, once you step in that cage, you are in serious trouble either way.

Cris Santos now calls San Diego home, where she lives with her hus-band Evangelista in Pacific Beach. She also trains out of The Arena, the San Diego MMA gym who helped prepare her for her last two title fights.

So if you live in San Diego and happen to see her, make sure to say hi. Because as fierce as she is in the cage, she is the exact opposite outside of it, being extremely nice and friendly. Just don’t forget she is the baddest woman on the planet.

While San Diego is well-known in the MMA world for being the home to numerous fighters and gyms, it has never hosted a MMA promotion bigger than

the WEC. Finally, that’s about to change. The UFC recently announced it will be bringing an event to San Diego, helping to establish the city even more firmly as a hub for MMA.

This is a significant moment in sports history for San Diego, as the UFC is the largest live pay-per-view event content provider in the world and the fastest growing main stream sports organization in history. It produces over twelve live pay-per-view events annually that are distributed in 132 coun-tries, territories and jurisdictions, reaching 430 mil-lion homes worldwide in 20 different languages.

Originally scheduled for Salt Lake City, it will now take place live from the San Diego Sports Arena. UFC president Dana White moved the event to San Diego, stating “Our television ratings in Salt Lake City have always been strong, and when we finally found the opportunity to bring a UFC event there with a great card, I was very surprised and disappointed in ticket sales. As a result, for the first time in UFC history, I decided to pull the plug and move this August 1st event to the San Diego Sports Arena”.

The fight card, featuring rising star Jon “Bones” Jones (10-1) vs. highly experienced Russian Vla-damir Matyushenko (24-4) as the featured main event, will start at 6 pm pST Sunday August 1st. Also on the main card, Yushin Okami faces So Cal Fighter Mark Munoz, Jake Ellenberger takes on John Howard and Takanori Gomi battles Joe Stevenson.

Rising Ultimate Fighting Championship star Jon “Bones” Jones has captivated the fight world with a dynamic style that has already led him to wins over Brandon Vera and Stephan Bonnar. But on Sunday, August 1st, at the San Diego Sports Arena, the light heavyweight phenom will be put to the test like nev-er before by former world title challenger Vladimir Matyushenko, a hard-nosed veteran who has the power and the style to derail Jones and move one step closer to a shot at a world title.

With the UFC rapidly expanding and demand growing for its events all over the world, it might take some time before it returns to San Diego. So make sure to get your tickets and be part of San Diego MMA history. Tickets are on sale now and are reasonably priced, with seats available for $40 and up. They are available at the San Diego Sports Arena Box Office, Ticketmaster locations, calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745 -3000 or going to Ticketmaster.com. For more go to www.ufc.com.

DON’T ever get any piercing done with an ear-piercing gun because it is unsanitary & cannot be sterilized properly.

DO verify the piercer uses single use needles, sterilized equipment, latex gloves, and other procedures to prevent cross contamination, infection or disease transmission.

DON’T get a piercing at a convention of any sort. It’s the worst possible situation for the piercer, you, and your piercing.DO select a time when you are healthy, well rested, and mentally ready for the piercing. If you aren’t sure, you aren’t ready. Eat a balanced meal 2-4 hours before the piercing.

DON’T accept “temporary” or “starter” jewelry. A profes-sional piercer will be honest if what you need for your piercing isn’t in stock, he/she will say so. You’ll be happier waiting for the right jewelry than if you “make do.”

APOGEE ADVICETHE DO’S AND DON’TS OF GETTING PIERCED

DON’T forget to tell the piercer if you have any medical conditions, medications or other health concerns that may affect the piercing procedure or healing, it may make a difference in the placement or aftercare. (A professional will keep the information confidential).

DO obtain and read completely the written aftercare instructions. Ask questions about caring for your specific piercing, if general instructions are given.

DON’T accept the myth that “all piercing get infected”. Piercing shouldn’t get infected and won’t if the piercing was done correctly and you take proper care of it.

DO follow the aftercare instructions. If you are instruct-ed to clean the piercing twice a day for six months, do it. Even if the piercing appears fully healed. Navel and nipple piercing are especially notorious for irritation if you stop caring for them earlier than suggested.

DON’T remove or replace the jewelry earlier than specified. If you must remove it temporarily, use a quality retainer that’s made for that specific piercing to keep the piercing open. Replace with the original piece of jewelry as soon as possible.

DO call or visit your piercer if you have any questions or concerns about your piercing.

DON’T follow your friends’ advice. We are the profes-sionals & we are here for you.

DO remember to go to Apogee on your 18th birthday for your free piercing by Kate

And finally,

DO be proud of your body piercing. It’s as special as you are!

Time flies when you’re having fun, and the band from Ocean Beach, CA; Slightly Stoopid, is having the time of their lives. Nearly 15 years has passed since Bradley Nowell {Sublime frontman} yanked Miles & Kyle out of the back yard parties, and threw them into a studio to record their first album. Since

then, they’ve started their own record label ‘Stoopid Records,’ and have continued to pump out album after album. Having full control of their mu-sic, they’ve been able to maintain their artistic integrity, and keep their independence.

I visited with Rymo {Ryan Moran} in 2008, so with them heading back to San Diego on July 17th, I thought it would be a great time to catch up. I found out that after taking some much needed time with family and friends, they’ve spent a lot of time in their new studio jamming with some amazing artists. The SS crew is headlining this summer’s “Legalize It” tour. Here’s what I found out.

RIS: I heard the show last night was insane. They said SS came out and did what they do best... “Melting the audiences faces off.” How does it feel to be back on the road again?

RYMO: It’s great, I love being on the road. Home’s out here for us, more or less. We feel pretty comfortable being on the go all the time.

RIS: That is the one thing about leaving San Diego; you appreciate it so much more when you get back.

RYMO: I totally agree, there is no place like home.

RIS: This is the LEGALIZE IT 2010 TOUR; do you think California should legalize it?

RYMO: Yeah, we’re hoping is goes through in November. There would be a lot less problems out there for people who are trying to start their own business, and be legit.

RIS: Why do you think it would be beneficial for California to legal-ized marijuana?RYMO: There are a lot of reasons. In terms of taxation, the government can definitely benefit from that. It will also create new business, which will create new jobs. Another obvious reason for legalization, so that people with a terminal illness can smoke a joint in peace, so that they are able to relax. There are so many different reasons why people need to smoke. I just think if you want to smoke, you should be able to.

RIS: I read and article on the internet that marijuana raises your IQ, that it enhances certain mental abilities. Do you find this statement to be true, and has it helped your ability to create and write songs?

RYMO: Yeah, I think the reason humans have been doing drugs, includ-ing alcohol for that matter, since the beginning of time, is that it does open up other channels in your brain. So I totally agree with that state-ment. I don’t know if it makes you smarter per say, but I do think it opens your creative channels in a different way than you would normally be able to without partaking in any particular drug. Drugs like mushrooms, acid, and all those types, open up different doorways, and other creative potential in the human brain. So as far as the influence on our music, all you have to do is listen.

RIS: I hear you’ve been working on a new collaboration project with G-Love, Barrington Levy, Fishbone, Del Tha Funkee Homosa-pien, just to name a few. What’s happening with that?

RYMO: We built a studio in San Diego. We’ve got a place out in Mission Valley these days. It’s kind of like a compound. We have an office for our manager, storage for our road gear, and a recording studio upstairs. So having the facility here, we’re able to have a lot of our friends come by and jam with us. It’s a lot easier to be creative in your own personal studio, especially when it’s not costing you $1000 to $1500 per day. We’ve been able to have fun, and record some tracks with Del Tha Fun-kee Homosapien, and like you said G-Love, Barrington, and a couple of others. We’re not sure what’s going to make the cut just yet, but it’s going to be good.

RIS: Any idea of when you might be releasing this project?

RYMO: We’re looking at the spring of next year. We’re looking forward to the next chapter in the Slightly Stoopid saga.

RIS: You’re promoting the ‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough for Break-fast Yet Stoopid’ album, which has been out for a while, is a great album. Now that somet ime has passed, is it easier to play to an audience that’s familiar with the album? Does it end up turning into one big sing-a-long?

RYMO: Yeah, it does. We had a lot of fun making this album. We’ve been putting out albums back to back, so when we finished this last one everyone decided it would be a good time to slow down a little bit, and spend some time at home with our families and friends. We actually cre-ated the album with this in mind. Lets put out a lot of tunes, some old, some new, and some that we’ve recorded in the past that were locked up in the vaults. So we created this, sort of, three-part album. We’re very happy about the way it came out. people are getting familiar with the music, which is great to see. There are a lot of good songs on this album, not just one or two, but I’m bias.

RIS: Any final words?

RYMO: Yeah, I just want to everyone to come out to the show, and have some fun with us.

Well I hope you enjoyed my chat with Rymo, and I wanted to personally thank Jeff Farsai for taking some amazing shots, and giving Revolt In Style some exclusive photos to use. Jeff you rock! Head over to www.revoltinstyle.com & stay tuned for details on when Slightly Stoopid is go-ing to show up at the RSSS surf contest in Ocean Beach on July 17th for autographs and free tickets to the show. Yep, you heard right!

1. What got you started in club promoting? In middle school, high school and college I loved to set up events and parties. Even more so, I loved it when the event came into fruition and I got to enjoy the fruits of my labor, with all my friends. I love to party and have fun. I worked as a VIp host at Stingaree, Sidebar and Bar West. After a while I realized I could work for myself and work for all different venues. I like not be-ing tied down to the same venue every night, as when you work at one place for a long period of time it becomes monotonous, you know? Having the ability to throw events at all different venues and even in different cities is really appealing. My company, Night Access does marketing and promotions, not just for clubs, but also restau-rants, hotels and small businesses.

2. How do you get so many hot girls to show up at your events?Well... girls like to hang out with my staff and myself... I think. We always make sure that the ladies are having a good time, have drinks, and are not bothered by the club creepers (you know the ones) I hired people who are awesome, fun, and girls love to be around - Travis Kohler is my 2nd in command, along with Benjamin Cohen, Aaron Griver, Saman Nasseri, Michael Benja-

min, Mike Land, and of course JessicaOnly - Our paparazzi is the one and only Ben Decamp (TheStyleShark) - Let’s just say he has an awe-some style that fits perfect with Night Access and people love it.

3. What is the Perfect ratio of girls to guys at a typical Night Access event? 60/40 girls to guys

4. You’re friends with some pretty famous people. What’s some of the coolest/craziest stuff you’ve gotten to do with them?Um, I know how edgy Revolt Magazine is...let’s just say not even your magazine would be al-lowed to publish those stories - but I do enjoy going to hollywood (once in a while) - famous people party just like you and me, the only dif-ference is that they’re on tv

5. What is your biggest or favorite event(s) to date?Night Access does trips to Vegas with the Light Group (the largest group in Vegas), where we bring 100 hot ladies from San Diego for an all expense paid vacation... It’s pretty insane. Last March we did the ‘Spring Fling’ where we brought 150 ladies and invaded Vegas for 3

nights... let’s just say that these are the best trips I have ever experienced... and NO, I cannot tell you any stories. But we do invite new people on the trip all the time so they can experience the mayhem for themselves. Ladies have a chance to sign up and win a trip 4 times a year at www.NightAccess.com - We’re doing another trip July 23rd... should be interesting to say the least... 100 Hot Ladies + Vegas = awesome. But I have to say, when I’m in San Diego I love Stingaree, Voyeur, Bar West & Hard Rock - 207 Sunday Industry Night is a lot of fun for me

6. What’s your favorite thing to do on your days off?Fish... I have a center console fishing boat and I love to kill fish and eat them. Not a lot of people know that San Diego has world class fishing here. So if you see me really sun burnt during the summer, with a ‘glasses’ tan - ask me for a filet of bluefin or mahi mahi, I have a bunch in my fridge

7. Single or Taken?Single, but let me know if you know someone who’s interested... haha

8. Let’s say someone from out of town is reading this, where would you tell them to go to have a great time?

Go to www.NightAccess.com - You can find out what hot events are going on, get on the free guestlist and also check out cool photos and vid-eos - we also have contests all the time where we give away free vip tables at clubs & free trips to Vegas

9. Future Plans?

I plan on being in the entertainment business for the rest of my life - I love to have fun. I feel like life is too short to not enjoy it to the fullest - Night Access is going to grow and thrive, but I plan on keeping the company on the West Coast only (as you may know... West is best) I plan on hav-ing a bar in the beach area first then will open up night clubs and restaurants after. I know that right now I’m loving life & everyone in it. I feel like my purpose in life is to make other people happy. So, if I can do that while enjoying life... then that’s a pretty good deal.

DHS is the techno alias of San Francisco-based electronic musician and Meat Beat Manifesto member Ben Stokes. Three new mixes include phonique’s cheeky jacking track, Martin Landsky with a powerful club remix, and an updated DHS version that is functional dark house energy.

After an extreme ski-ing accident took him out of commission for a while, Reardon found a place to focus his insatiable passion for life. Black Sunshine was born! There’s nothing half-ass about this guy. Whether it’s barreling down the side of a mountain, or teaming up with some of the finest musicians and producers that rock has to offer. This guy is going to make it happen. Joining Reardon, producer Bob Marlette (Shinedown, Alice Cooper, Slayer, Saliva, Ozzy, and so on) and drummer Matt “Toast” Young (Billy Idol), guitarist and multi instrumentalist Jeff Flannery (Van Zant’s), and bassist Christopher Serafini (Pollen, The Stereo) creating this powerfully infectious self titled album, that stacks up against any rock album out there. Chock full of singing guitars, methodically placed bass and drums, and Reardon’s multi-layered vocals and catchy lyrics, round off this album. It makes me want to scream “CRANK IT Up!” There really isn’t a bad song on this CD, actually, they all pretty much f***king rock!

Call the Cops - Call the Cops Genre – Alt/Pop/Electro

If you haven’t heard of Call the Cops, prepare yourself. There’s a huge chance you’ve heard their music before. This up beat pop-tween, emo, electric sound has been around for years, just not with the name “Call the Cops.” Don’t get me wrong; imitation is the biggest form of flattery, and in the era of the “Twilight” sagas this band fits in perfect with this demographic. With help from producer Ian Kirkpatrick (plain White T’s, Neon Trees), he takes this newly formed band and lays down a crisp tech produc-tion. Call the Cops definitely has polished their sound, giving them the capabilities of hanging with the big boys. So if you’re fans of music from, Katy Perry, 3OH!3 and Boys Like Girls, you are going to enjoy this one as well. There are a couple songs on the album that got my toe a tappin,’ ‘Like It Like That,’ and ‘White Dress.’ Music’s in the ear of the beholder, so if you have an ear for electronic-tinged pop rock, then I recommend this one for you.

Slightly Stoopid - Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet StoopidGenre- Rock/Reggae

I wanted to revisit the bands newest release on the Stoopid Records label, ‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid.’ The album was launched back in 2008. It includes outtakes from both the ‘Closer To The Sun,’ which are tracks that were previously issued as a limited edition bonus CD, and ‘Cronchitis’ sessions, as well as a bevy of new material recorded at Miami’s famed Circle House Studios which include ‘No Cocaine,’ ‘Fruits (Legalize Them),’ and ‘Circle House Blues.’ Also included are tunes such as UB40’s ‘I Would Do For You’ and the traditional ‘I Know You Rider,’ which was most notably covered by the Grateful Dead. My favorite songs on the album are ‘False Anthyms,’ ‘Circle House Blues,’ ‘Train 1, ‘Train 2,’ and soon to be a chant-along song sensation ‘Sensimilla’. For all of you that haven’t gotten your copy just yet, go pick one up and head to their concert on July 17th. If you don’t, you’ll be the only person at the show that won’t know all the words.

Gaslight Anthem - American SlangGenre – Alt/Nu Medal

New Jersey quartet The Gaslight Anthem would be the first to admit that they share more than a home state with Bruce Springsteen. However, there’s nothing wrong with being heavily influenced by another artist so long as you still have something of your own to bring to the table, and The Gaslight Anthem do indeed bring something. While frontman Brian Fallon’s rugged but sensitive vocals and wordy blue-collar lyricism may seem familiar, the fact is, that he very much has his own sound. American Slang is a very subtle step forward from ‘The ‘59 Sound,’ conjuring exactly the same thrills from slightly different angles. “Stay Lucky” and “Boxer” come closest to the top-down sing-a-longs of “The ‘59 Sound,” with restless guitar, thrilling and dynamic drum breaks, and Brian Fallon’s deep rasping voice still taps a deep vein of American male loneliness. I thoroughly enjoyed this album. With ‘American Slang,’ the Gaslight Anthem takes another step away from their riff-punk past, leaning more heavily on their classic-rock influences and letting their ‘Warped Tour’ attitudes take more of a backseat than ever before. It may not have the surging immediacy of The ‘59 Sound, but it’s a testament to a band that, despite all the growing up they’ve done, are still incredibly relatable.

Kidz in the Hall – Land of make believeWhile at first glance the Kidz in the Hall don’t have much in common with fictional ‘70s rock band Stillwater (from the movie Almost Famous, for those who haven’t figured out where I’m going with this yet), a closer examination reveals that The Land of Make Believe could have easily served as the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe’s superbly written flick. Robert Rodriguez’s Predators (20th Century Fox)“Fear is reborn.” Robert Rodriguez didn’t direct this reborn/remake/reboot/reimagining (what-evah!) of the 80s sci-fi action film but he did produce it and he did approve of director Nimród Antal (Vacancy) so there’s hope. Adrien Brody leads a group of elite warriors that find themselves hunted by members of a ruthless alien race known as predators. The “s” is important. The origi-nal film just had one predator, this one promises a whole bunch of them. Should be bloody fun!RRRR- Recommended Opens July 9.

The Last Airbender (Paramount Pictures)After The Happening, I’m not sure I even want to give M. Night Shyamalan another chance to annoy and bore me. This time he turns to source material that at least promises more action: Nickelodeon’s successful animated TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The film follows the young Aang who must mature quickly in order to stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations. How about he work on keeping Shyamalan from driving audiences to distraction with his pretentious, self-serving, lame-ass filmmaking. Go rent Sixth Sense instead. RR-Reserving Judgment (not available for preview)

The Girl Who Played With Fire (Music Box Films)In The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo we were introduced to Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace), a researcher, hacker, and slightly unbalanced young woman trying to expose the truth about sex trade in Swe-den. In the highly anticipated second installment of what’s being called the Millennium Trilogy, we find Lisbeth a wanted woman. Lisbeth continues her somewhat reluctant partnership with Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), a journalist now trying to clear her name. The first film was a slow building, tense thriller with a female protagonist who refused to just be a victim. Now she turns into something of an avenging angel. RRRR- Recommended Opening July 9.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Summit Entertainment)If you just can’t get enough of sparkling vampires and ripped abs, then here’s the film for you: the latest installment in the Stephenie Meyer Twilight Saga. In this teen bodice ripper, young Bella (Kristen Stewart) will again have to choose between sulky vamp boy Edward (Robert pattinson) and adoring lap dog Jacob (Taylor Lautner). When will this soap opera finally be over?! Bring on Dark Shadows! R-Rejected

Inception (Warner Bros.)A new film from Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight) is always worth tak-ing note of. This time out he dives into a surreal world where a technology exists that can allow one to enter the human mind through dream invasion. There are hints of the anime Paprika (where a device allowed a therapist to enter her patients’ dreams) but Nolan spins his tale in a different direction. Although Leonardo DiCaprio’s par-ticipation does little to excite me, Nolan has assembled a fine ensemble of actors that includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Wa-tanabe, Cillian Murphy, Mar-ion Cotillard, and Michael Caine. This looks to be one of the few highlights of the summer season. RRRR- Rec-ommended Opens July 16.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Dom Cobb, a master in the art of dream-extraction, in Warner Bros.’ sci-fi action adventure, ‘Inception’.

FREESTYLE AT THE FAIRJeff Tilton and Tommy Clowers Bring Freestyle MX to Del Marphotos by Leslie Krouse

On June 20th, the San Diego County Fair held its 5th annual Action Sports day. Freestyle motocross, mini bike racing and R/C cars invaded the Del Mar Arena. The Red Bull TNT freestyle motocross show headlined the action packed day. Tommy Clowers, Myles Richmond and Destin Cant-rell thrilled the crowd with all of the tricks that make this sport so popular.

TNT Action sports is owned by freestyle motocross pioneers Jeff Tilton and Tommy Clowers. Both are San Diego natives so doing the event at the SD county fair is extra special because it means a weekend home with friends and family.

Q. What is the Red Bull TNT tour?

Tilton: We started the tour eight years ago and we have done around 300 events. The cool thing is that we get to do a large variety of different types of events. We have done demos at Nascar races, music tours, bar districts, NFL games, college festivals and the list goes on. One of the coolest places we have done a demo at is the pentagon. We were there in May as part of the Semper Ride motorcycle safety program for the Marine Corp.

Q. Tommy, you guys travel quite a bit so what does it mean to you to be able to do this event at the fair on Fathers Day.

Clowers: It’s great that we do this event every year at the San Diego Fair. I have two kids, so it’s cool to be able to ride a show and have the family here to be together on Fathers Day. All of my friends and family come out including my mom and dad. So after we do the first show I get to cruise around the fair and have fun with the family. Then we come back and do the second show in the afternoon.

Q. How does doing a show in San Diego compare to other shows you do in dif-ferent parts of the country?

Clowers: It’s great doing shows here in San Diego. We only do a couple of shows a years here, so it is great to be able to put on a show for the hometown fans. There is a huge motocross scene here in SD, so we have a lot of fans here. There are a lot of people who come to the fair on this day just to watch the freestyle demo.

Q. What other shows have you done in San Diego?

Tilton: We have had some really cool shows here. We have jumped at the padres games like four times. We all threw out the first pitch after we did the demo. That was super cool! We are also all involved in a project called Semper Ride. We made a movie for the Marine Corp that I produced and Tommy was one of the main riders in it. The movie is basically the sports top pros giving advice on how to get into the sport correctly. With that we have done demos in conjunction with the movie premieres at Marine Corp Air Station Miramar and the Recruit Depot by the airport. It is really cool to be able to give back the Marines and help them be better motorcycle riders.

Q. Tommy , you have had a great career in FMX, what are some of your high-lights?

Clowers: Thanks, yeah I think the X Games have been huge for me. I have won 9 med-als total, 4 of them being gold. I’m really proud of what I was able to do at the X Games. The other thing that is really cool is being one the riders on the television show “The Great Ride Open.” We got to ride some of the most amazing natural terrain locations in the country. We did two seasons of that show and it was a blast!

Q. Cool, who would you like to thank?

Clowers: I have to thank my family first of all and also all of my fans. I also have to thank Red Bull for all support over the years, they have been great.

CANCER - 22 June - 22 July “The sign of the crabs” is (somewhat) ironically one of the signs that is least likely to contract VD, and in other clini-cal studies it has come to light that Cancerians are also less likely than other star-signs to need to visit the doc-tor at all. One particular study did conclude, however, that this was mainly because the Cancerians involved died in a “snakes in a lift” incident before they had chance to con-tract any illness. Nonetheless, statistics clearly prove that Cancerians are amongst the healthiest of us all!

LEO - 23 July - 22 AugustThe lion! Strong, powerful, masterly - the Leo has an awe-some responsibility to take care of all of us, in the same way that Super Heroes have a responsibility to use their powers for good. Of course, some super-heroes go bad and turn into evil archenemies of the good super-heroes, and the same is true of Leo. Those born in Leo have a ten-dency to find themselves in trouble, they are as corruptible as they are powerful and will seek to gain an advantage in any way possible, either in business (for example, loan-sharking) or love (a relationship between two people).

VIRGO - 23 August - 22 September “The Virgin”, can be far from virginal and is often ex-tremely outgoing, forthcoming and giving. Virgos are often found in the limelight, seeking attention and fame. However, all this comes at a price because Virgo are also the least well-to-do of the star signs, often impoverished and to be found lying on the streets in their own vomit and cheap booze. Virgo will always be up for any challenge but find themselves pushed too hard, too often and eventually burn out.

LIBRA - 23 September - 23 OctoberLibrans are sometimes known to go in for wife/husband swapping, and “swinging” appears to be a popular ac-tivity amongst Librans. Stopping the Libran from being so liberal with his/her body can sometimes be a chore. Chains and ropes are likely to help in the short-run, but that’s because they like the idea of dressing up and S&M. Generally Librans are against things, which can make them pretty miserable and at the same time fairly interest-ing. Until they become tiresome.

SCORPIO - 24 October - 21 NovemberMost often very prim and proper, not enjoying fart jokes or Calvin and Hobbes “pissing” pictures. Whilst they do a sense of humor, Scorpio is the star-sign most likely to use the phrase “I have a very good sense of humor, it’s you that doesn’t”. Whilst being one of the more uptight star-signs, Scorpio is also well endowed in the sexual ar-eas. For men, this can be referenced in the pseudo-med-ical manner as “Trouser-Snakeage”. For women, “Ample Breastage”. Many Scorpions are also proud to have at their disposal, an almost insatiable appetite for love and are often quite overpowering in the giving and receiving of attentions.

SAGITTARIUS - 22 November - 21 DecemberA star-sign that is well thought of amongst other zodiac signs. Well to do, intelligent and fit, are some words used to describe Sagittarians, for they are a formibable bunch. Sagittarians are well known for their eloquence and plain speaking. Unfortunately, 4% of Sagittarians also suffer from tourettes syndrome, which can be a very bad com-bination for those who don’t like hearing swears. How-ever, most Sagittarians are excellent orators and are usu-ally called upon to create the kinds of speeches that have gone down in history.

CAPRICORN - 22 December - 19 JanuaryTthe most gentle of all the star signs, always ready to help a friend in need without secretly eyeing their partner or wallet. Capricorns are also particularly gifted when it comes to flag folding and often make the best Scouts. When choosing a friend you can do no wrong in picking a Capricorn, they are always there when you need to mooch and even though they are wise fellows and will attempt to steer you in a positive direction, they are also weak willed and will bail you out as much as you need.

AQUARIUS - 20 January - 18 FebruaryAquarians are one of the most liberated zodiac signs, as you might imagine. With their hearts free of fear and anxiety, they can instead fill them with love, desire and a need to replace their furniture every 6 to 8 months. The other stark thing about the Aquarian is that they share many characteristics with Giraffes - long necks, a predi-lection for grazing and a haughty look when you try to shoo them away from eating the leaves on your tallest trees. Aquarians require love and devotion and will grow sulky and moping if not centre of attention. The best way to keep an Aquarian happy is to walk around with a flag that says “You’re No. 1!” or “I can’t believe my luck that I’m with you!”

PISCIES - 19 February - 20 MarchPisces are to astrology what the Vulcans are to Star Trek. They are the peacekeepers, devoid of any true spirit, and least likely to form meaningful relationships. OK, Pisceans aren’t all that bad, but they do tend to be the more mellow kind of people. Ask a Piscean to pick you up from the floor after a stumble and you’ll not only get the helping hand you desire, but a firm friend for life (unless you can confuse him/her by saying you don’t be-lieve in Pi - that always foxes them!). A piscaen is always ready with a friendly suggestion or apothegm, depend-ing on the mood and is one of the more benign star-signs whilst driving. Pisces is also one of the cleverer star signs, usually reveling in mathematics or logic.

ARIES - 21 March - 19 AprilAriens are probably due for a bit of a come-back. During the 90s and the early part of the 00s, Aries was often the sign that everyone else blamed for their collective misfortunes. In particular, Sagittarians were encour-aged to single out Ariens as the single reason they were an utter failure. Some astrologers even went so far as to incite cake-to-face related violence, as seen in this newspaper clipping. Kent Clark is currently on trial in the Philippines for organizing midget dog wrestling. However, the revival is on its way and your being Arien is going to mean that you will command the respect and favors you deserve. In fact, you should probably begin by trying to make people address you as “Master” and signing off any emails with the words “Your Chief and Overlord, etc, etc”.

TAURUS - 20 April - 20 MayWhilst occasionally malodorous, Taureans are re-nowned for their good sense of humor and their ability to laugh at the strangest things, even funny horoscopes. Of particular use in Taureans faculties, is his/her abil-ity to pick winning lottery numbers. Regarding this, science tells us that Taureans are at least as likely as other lucky people to win often and plentifully. Taurus generally likes to think they have “lucky numbers” and they are usually between 1 and 20. Most restaurants are owned by Taureans and some of these are very success-ful. Other popular occupations for Taureans include: teachers, doctors, waste-disposal-experts, climbers, builders, plumbers, computer programmers, funeral di-rectors and Ronald McDonald impersonators.

GEMINI - 21 May - 21 JuneGemini or “The Twins” is one of the more sensual of star-signs. This sensuality is often marred, however, by a random nervous twitch, which most Geminiians are afflicted by. The twitch most often takes the form of an involuntary lashing of the tongue in what looks like an attempt to lick one’s eyeball. Whilst this is not true of all Geminiians, for the rest of us it’s a handy sign that allows us to initiate “Are you Gemini?” style chat-up lines. Most astrologers agree that Gemini are born with a duality of nature. The stupid medical professions are known to mistake this fact for schizophrenia often lead-ing to hilarious consequences. Clearly not all Gemini’s are thus afflicted, many are charming, social and intel-ligent characters who would not like to scoop out both your eyes with a spoon.
