From the Editor’s Desk by Shane Krueger Hello everyone and welcome to your December edition of REVS. With Doug off this month to the Nationals in Launceston I have put together this month’s newsletter for you. There will be no REVS in January, so the full run down from Tasmania will be in the next edition in February. Thanks to everyone that has contributed articles, stories and photos. Without you there would be no REV’S, but we are always looking for more interesting stories and/or articles for REVS. We will endeavour to reproduce all submissions faithfully, but might need to edit if required. Please let us know if there are any errors in articles or on address labels, apologies in advance if this occurs. Articles / ads are not necessarily pre sanctioned by the Executive Committee.

Closing date for submission of articles for February Revs by 15th

February 2015.

Email submissions to: [email protected], or post to P.O. Box 179, Rocklea, Qld, 4106

President’s Report by Shane Krueger Good luck and safe motoring to all that are attending the A.E.H.F. Nationals in Launceston. It will be a lot of

kilometres to travel and all are looking forward to the trip and representing our club at this prestigious event.

Sunday 30th

November was our Xmas run and lunch at the Woodford Hotel (report by Kel later in REVS), and

we made presentation of the Club Champion for 2014, Dave Clarke, and the encouragement award to Randy

Smith. Congratulations to both for their hard work and dedication to the club this year.

Once again it has been an enjoyable year to be a member, and have the honour to be President of our club. I

would like to thank all members of the committee for their continued support throughout the year. Also a big

thanks to all members that put their hands up to do the tasks that have been required, attending both meetings

and club runs is what makes ours a great club to a part of.

Don’t forget that the next meeting on 9th

February is the A.G.M. and if you wish to run for, or nominate

someone for a position on the executive committee. Nomination forms later in REVS.

Finally, on behalf of the committee, we wish all a happy and safe festive season and look forward to seeing all

in the New Year.

FX/FJ Christmas Party 30th November 2014 By Kel Towerton.

The day before run I panicked……… where, when, and what to bring to Xmas party? Quick call to Donna to

check payment and meeting times, then a scan of pantry for a Christmas hamper item. Doh, no luck there, only

just a half-empty a packet of Weet-Bix and some a stale SAO biscuits!! Then I spied a set of still-in-the box

Red Holden tumbler and jug set from a raffle win on a previous Christmas party. Bottler, do the trick, and no

one will be the wiser (Oops, cats out of the bag now). I never did get all that collectable stuff anyway, who

needs a tumbler set to remind them of what car they drive

anyway!

Zipp…………….. Fast forward to the MI an hour later.

Some old couple trying to drag my attention and beeping

the horn and wav’in as they go past……. another of those

reminiscing folk (my dad used to have one of those)

recalling their youth.

Oh sorry, it’s Rosanne and John Gager (they’re still

relatively young really and good looking) in their Honda on

the way to the meet point, oh so I’m not that late after all.

The days turned out to be pretty good and it is mild. After a couple of hot stinkers we have had lately, it’s a

relief. Warm but pleasant and still no showers in sight.

So at the start point, normal meet and greet, and

Peter Whalley done another stellar job of briefing

the assembly for the run, and as Tony Greg

would have said, ‘And what a magnificent job

he’s done this year, awesome form and batting

well-above-the-average!’

On the road and I singled in amongst the group

leaders to ensure I was not ending up on the

wrong road, as good as Pete’s directions are, its

nigh-all-but-impossible to read them whilst

driving. Lyn had elected to follow along later in

the family car and meet us at the Woodford Pub.

In the 13.5 years of my FJ Ute ownership, she has yet to sit inside the old FJ!

Still as I was driving along I thought of some unstated advantages of going solo on the runs. Firstly you have

the right to make a wrong-turn or some driving indiscretion, without having to get discouraging comment from

she or he that sits beside you. Many an argument has ensued between me and the better-half over bloody

directions! Secondly; you can sing your favourite song, curse at other stupid driver’s bad driving habits or let

that pain in the gut from last night’s curry pass, without hearing a complaining wailing louder than fire-engine

beside you. And lastly, you can engage your thoughts and listen to the purr of the engine without being asked

questions or pestered about things you had promised to do, but have yet to accomplish at home. So you can see

all clearly see why I travel alone!

So finally we climb the mountain and the FJ is flying up

the range, only to be slowed by the car in front, when a

green flash passes by like a punter collecting his

winnings bet at the Melbourne Cup. It’s Willy giving

the FX its head as he manoeuvres past, apparently tired

of following in my wake. Once at the top of the

mountain the serine blue haze of the Glasshouse

mountains backdrop behind the green pastures of the

valley below, reminds me why I love the region so

much. These are the roads my friends that old Holden’s

seem to give their best and belie their short-comings.

Until your mind has wandered a little…………….and then you meet a sharp downhill section and you have to

stand on the brakes hard before almost greeting the car in front’s bumper bar. The joys of FJ stocky ownership!

A steep dive to morning-tea stop at the Bird sanctuary and gardens stop at Maleny, has the brakes warming –up

once more, after recovering from the former stop above, and me hoping that Willy’s are good if mine fade!

Morning was scrumptious home-made scones jam and fresh-cream served with tea or coffee.

In a rotunda and once again we had those glorious Glasshouse

Mountain views to be appreciated. After the scones and

tea/coffee there was made a bit-of-a-fuss over a certain club

member who had happened to have a birthday that coincided with

the club run date. Now I’m not usually excited about birthday

celebrations (particularly for adults, and certainly not for me) but

in this case I decided to make an exception. For it was Jill

Manganaro who is one of my favourite club members and is

always cheerful and willing to help anyone whenever the

occasion requires. So it was happy birthday and three cheers to

Jill, before she cut the cake and then took a piece over to Tony.

After smoko it was off to the bird aviary (for those who wished to

visit it) and the women were warned to remove their jewellery,

especially earrings, which are a favourite item to

retrieve from the tourists by the birds. There was an

outstanding collection of both exotic and native in the

thousand square metre cage. There were many species

from the parrot family including Macaws from South

America that loved all the attention (and almonds) that

they received from the crowd.

Then one Rosella decided to have a nibble at a recent

sun-spot removal I had on my ear, and left me with a

trickle of blood running down my neck.

Back on the road, and another scenic drive as we

descended the range passed Bellthorpe, which has some

magnificent stands of Ghost-gum eucalyptus. I have

previously visited some of these properties when

working for Greening Australia on native forest

management issues. Once back on more level terra-

firma I was relieved that I had no brake-fade issues, as

we cruised behind Woodford over Neunham Creek (base

of Mt Mee) and passed the correctional centre and into Woodford.

Lunch was in the historic Woodford pub which was the only one in town and therefore hard to miss. This is

where we met the remainder of club members and

family who had not wanted or had the time to

spend touring the Blackall ranges in the morning.

Over the road were some classic cars and hot-rods

that were parked together eluding to the fact there

were other clubs that were visiting the region, on

this fine day.

Lyn met me here and we joined Ricky and Tanya,

Maurie and Helen at our table and enjoyed a three

course meal of seafood, roast and sweets. It was

above the normal pub-fare meals and represented

good value for the money. Talk around the table

was of Rick and Tanya’s immaculate HG Monaro (see attached photos) and Maurie’s upcoming trip to the FX-

FJ Nationals in Tasmania.

9

After the raffle for the prior mentioned Christmas

hamper, there were the traditional speeches for the

good effort that Shane and the committee had put in

this year (especially to Tineke Whitten De Meer, who

had stepped up into the secretary’s job and had done

an excellent job). Two awards were given also the

first an Encouragement award to Randy Smith (who

wasn’t able to attend the run) and Club Champion

that went Dave Clarke who put in a lot of behind the

scenes work as back-up secretary until it was filled by

Tineke, and many other support roles he provided to

the club over the year. Well done Dave!

All in all this was one of the best organised and

orchestrated Christmas Parties the club has arranged

and thanks must go to Donna, Peter and the

organising committee that made this day the success

it ultimately became. Thanks Team!

FX/FJ Run 14th

December 2014 by Kel Towerton.

The day was overcast but a pleasant change to the hot humid days we had in the past weeks.

I arrived at the clubhouse early, with only Les and Sue Ross the only club members who were already there

before me. I was surprised to see Les driving a Ford Territory in lieu of a Commodore, but this is what work

provides, and today it was doing the chuck-wagon towing duties.

There were two utes and two sedans with two more

sedans joined us at the Redlands morning-tea stop.

Once again I was the only solo entrant. Apart from

waiting to get all the cars through the traffic lights it

was a scenic, but otherwise uneventful cruise to

Redland Bay.

Here we were joined by Alan and Liz Streader and

Sheryl and Jim Kilalea in their humpies. I have

always believed the marron interior on all black or

white car looks good and Alan’s black FJ is no

exception. It was enjoyable have our morning tea beside the sea with the sea breezes that accompanied it.

After smoko and the obligatory photos we headed back via the back roads, through Beenleigh and along

Camp Cable Road and Mt Lindsay Highway to Maclean’s Bridge.

It was almost a case of having the whole park to ourselves

and it was surprising cool under the pine trees as we ate

our burgers and remarked how quick the year had passed.

Bob Scofield then surprised us when he produced a plum

pudding and custard to seal another well organised run by

Peter.

Thanks Pete and all who attended.

Run Policies and Etiquette….. by Donna Hinds / Les Ross

Run participants are:

1. To ensure that their vehicle has adequate fuel to reach the destination or the next planned fuel stop. Run

departures will not be delayed for those vehicles needing last minute fuel; there is always ample time

before departure time to refuel.

2. Urged to be on time for the commencement of the run, 8am for 8.30 means be there at 8am, have a chat,

refuel, go the toilet, get a coffee and be ready for the run coordinators instructions. Should a member be

running behind, or wishing to join the run en-route please contact the run coordinator long before run

commencement time.

3. Urged to keep together wherever possible, particularly in built up areas. The leader will pull over where

safe and wait for everyone to get through lights etc.

4. To keep a eye out for the vehicle behind and shall slow down or stop so they can catch up before taking

the next turn, if this is done then the Run Coordinator would slow, and if required stop.

5. Not permitted to overtake the designated run leader. However members may move about in the group,

overtaking when safe and legal.

6. To keep to approximately 50 meters behind the vehicle in front where safe and practical, this allows

other traffic room to pass and lets the driver in front know that you are having no problems.

7. Encouraged to remain with the group until the agreed point at the end of the event. This also applies to

static displays such as car shows etc.

8. Encouraged to carry a small portable UHF CB radio and set it to Channel 20. Such radios are relatively

inexpensive, and have ranges varying from around one to five kilometers. Have a spare set of batteries

in the glove box. They are invaluable and a medium by which to keep informed about what is going on,

and to let the group know if you have become separated or broken down. They are also very good in

areas where mobile phones do not work.

Run coordinators are:

1. To provide a drivers briefing prior to departure for the run.

2. To lead the run, keeping to approximately 10km/h under the speed limit where possible (slowing down

if vehicle behind is out of sight).

3. Provide the address of each stopping point, to allow those that may get lost the chance to catch up.
