We do not know the names of the three girls that spoke to us but we do know they were kind, considerate and made our daughter smile. A little about us. We are a family of 5 soon to be 6 (in 4 weeks). Our older two have just started university. Our daughter, Heidi is 2 years old and has recently been diagnosed with cancer of the kidneys. Total shock to us as we are generally happy and well. We live about 8 hours away from Westmead in a place called Walgett. We will not be going home while she is having treatment but lucky enough to be staying at Ronald McDonald house. Heidi (and us) not only received warm hellos with friendly smiles but also received respect from the girls who did not ask any questions about why we were here. They gave Heidi gifts of a necklace, stickers and lovely ponies which have been played with non-stop since she got them. Thank you as a school for allowing these very thoughtful and respectful students to visit. Thank you to the parents who also allowed them to come and for raising such kind hearted kids. Most of all THANK YOU to all the students who made at least one child smile at Westmead Children's Hospital. And to the three girls that made our daughter smile, which in turn made us smile, from the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU! We will remember this, Karyn and Scott.”

Rewarding day for Community and Family Studies class!

Mrs Morris accompanied her Year 12 Community and Family Studies (CAFS) class for their annual visit to Westmead Children’s Hospital on Tuesday 24th February, 2015. They visited the inpatient and outpatient waiting rooms and provided entertainment and gave out stickers and toys that they had collected. The students also talked to patients and their carers to break the monotony of waiting around in a hospital day in day out. The excursion had a very positive outcome for our students; they said it was so nice to see the children smile.

The school received the following email from the parents of a young girl who was one of the recipients of the gifts handed out by our CAFS students. Well done girls.

“Hello

We would like to say a huge thank you to your students who came to visit kids at Westmead Children's Hospital today.

We will remember this,

Karyn and Scott.”

Chickenpox In Our Community What is chickenpox? Chickenpox is a disease that causes an itchy rash of blisters and a fever. A person with chickenpox may have a lot of blisters – as many as 500. The rash can spread over the whole body - even inside the mouth, eyelids, or genital area. Chickenpox can be serious and even life-threatening, especially in babies, adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

What are the symptoms of chickenpox? Chickenpox usually causes the following symptoms:

An itchy rash of blisters

Fever

Headache

Feeling tired

Is it serious? Chickenpox is usually mild in children, but the itching can be very uncomfortable. Children with chickenpox can miss up to one week of school or childcare.

Before the vaccine was available, about 4 million people got chickenpox each year in the United States. About 10,600 of those people were hospitalized, and 100 to 150 died each year.

In some cases, chickenpox can cause serious problems, such as: Skin infections

Dehydration (not having enough water in the body)

Pneumonia (an infection in the lungs)

Swelling of the brain

How does chickenpox spread?

Chickenpox spreads easily through the air when a person who has chickenpox coughs or sneezes. It can also spread by touching an infected person’s blisters. Chickenpox can be spread 1 to 2 days before the infected person gets a rash until all the blisters have formed and scabbed.

Save the Heart of Huskisson As I am sure you will all know by now, Save the Heart of Huskisson (a coalition of residents, business and tourism associations in the Bay and Basin region) has successfully lobbied council to 'put in a tender' to try and buy the land at 59 Owen Street, Huskisson, to preserve the magnetic views and open space. While this is a great outcome for us, it is not an outright win as we don't know if their tender will be successful.

We have good reason to believe there are community-minded decision-makers at Council (and at Club Jervis Bay) who are keen to see this block brought into council/public ownership, and every sign that they are supported by the community will help. While we know it is ambitious, we are continuing to crowdfund and we only have until the 11th February to get the total up as high as possible. Any amount you feel you can pledge towards this cause will help towards our goal. Please go to ozcrowd.com/heart and share with your networks.
