RGD 2012 Student AwardsThe Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2012 Student Awards. Selected by a jury of 36 award-winning crea-tive professionals from across Ontario, fifteen $1,000 Awards, sponsored by industry leaders, were distributed in recognition of the recipients’ outstanding achieve-ments in all areas of graphic design.

RGD’s annual Student Awards program brings industry professionals together with emerging designers to promote excellence and encourage the next generation of designers to reach the highest levels of creativity, inno-vation and conceptualization. To date, RGD has distrib-uted over $145,000 in cash awards to graphic design students who display excellence in their work. With more than 1,800 student members, RGD recognizes that students are the future of the Association and Canada’s graphic design industry.

RGD was created by an Act of the Ontario Legislature to certify graphic designers who have met a rigorous set of standards that includes documented levels of relevant, professional education and experience, as well as demonstrated competence in the areas of business, design principles, research, theory and ethics. RGD’s vision is for a graphic design profession that is broadly valued for its contribution to life, commerce and society.

Other RGD programs include: professional and career development events and webcasts; the annual Design-Thinkers and HeadStart conferences; a bi-annual survey of salaries and billing practices in the Canadian creative industry; the international Social Good Design Awards; regional design competitions and exhibitions, and more.

cUFF & cOLLAR BRANDING The intention of this project was to rebrand and repurpose a 30-year-old alterations shop, restoring value to a seemingly obsolete service and preserving a dying trade and the tradition behind it. The logo design references a contemporary aesthetic while maintaining a sense of history. The trade itself is repre-sented in the production of didactic tools, including a set of posters that teach sewing skills.

Before and AfterThis initiative of RGD’s Student Rep Committee is intended to show what students can do with a little constructive criticism, received at RGD portfolio review events such as HeadStart. For the program, Student and Provisional RGD Members select one piece from their portfolio that they would like to take from Good to Great. A feedback form is provided. Program participants record their reviewer’s comments during a portfolio review then revise their work based on the reviewer’s suggestions. Students and Provisional RGDs then submit their projects before the review and after revisions.

Jeremy’s attention to his critique is keen and well executed. The

revised fi lm poster is more engaging and functional. The key event

details are more clearly communicated; the messaging speaks

to “me” and not simply narrating another event. The elimination

of the word “spellbinding” forces my attention to “SHIFT”, which

received a great make-over, seemingly “branding” the festival

rather than having it blend in with the remaining copy. As a result

of Philip’s advice, Jeremy has improved the visual hierarchy of his

work resulting in a much more dynamic piece.
