Year 11 Outdoor The Year 11 Outdoor Recreation programme ventured west to Blackdown Tablelands last week where the students continued their abseiling progression skills which started at the RGS Birkbeck Building before further developing at Mt Archer and now they have conquered Blackdown Tablelands.

Campdraft fundraiser The RGS Campdraft team unfortunately doesn’t get a chance to saddle up their horses to compete for the third year in a row at the Interschools Percentile Campdraft in Pittsworth. The cancelled 2020 event was to be run in mid-November. The team is looking forward to 2021 and is seeking your support to help them raise funds to purchase team saddle cloths by raffling an all-you-can eat chocolate basket. $2/ tickets or 3 tickets for $5. Tickets can be purchased from the Junior Library, from Ms Cobon and in the Space Frame on Wednesdays during extended Morning Tea. The winner will be drawn on Thursday 3 September! We thank you in advance for your support.

Timetable blocks have been determined using this data and students will now have to make their final selection in coming weeks. Head of Year Reports Year 7

We are looking forward to a wonderful Camp Programme being kicked off this week with 7A heading to Ritamada today and tomorrow and 7B on Thursday and Friday. Thank you to families for your prompt return of permission via Parent Lounge. All other camps for Year 7 will occur in Term 4 (dates listed below) and letters and information will come home in the next two weeks. Term 4 7C – 12 - 13 October 7D – 15 – 16 October 7E – 19 – 20 October 7F – 22 - 23 October Our theme of TEAMWORK is going well with all classes enjoying the Form programme. We explored our class strengths and weaknesses this week in Tutorial and worked on our group focus as we prepare for camp. I am very pleased with how the Year 7 students are rising to the challenges presented to them in their classes. With exams and assessments edging closer, they are working hard to be well prepared. I do encourage them to use their time wisely to avoid any last minute panic. Taking the time to work with your children and assisting them with their study is something they really appreciate. Congratulations to the Year 7 Students who completed in the recent Maths Competition. Pictured are: Bronson Carlos, Daniel Spiryagin, Deepanshu Bhowmik, Toby Rowland, Sharvani Ashokumar and Sharika Ashokumar.

Year 8

The Year 8 camps are over and it has been clear from speaking to the students that they were a great success. Many thanks to Mr Boicos and Ms Price-Rees for the enthusiasm and effort they put into these camps to make them such a worthwhile experience. Given the current circumstances, the program on offer was fantastic. The Year 8s are now into 2021 Year 9 Subject Selections. Please ask your child about this process and they will be able to show you the selections they have made. All selections will be confirmed with you later in the year. Assessments and examinations are now the. The Assessment schedule is available on Parent Lounge and the examination timetable has been sent to all students. We have worked on quite a few things this term and one of the major tasks has been the completion of the eSmart Digital Licence, sponsored by the Alannah and Madeline foundation, www.digitallicence.com.au. Unfortunately, access to this website has been slow due to traffic demands and students have been asked to work on this activity at home as well as here at School. Here, at RGS, we pride ourselves on a many things and this is a timely reminder to students about the need to wear our uniform correctly and to be nice to each other. I am pleased to say that the Year 8s continue to amaze me with their maturity. They are “Proud to be Grammarians”.

Year 9

The Year 9 students are currently working in gender specific form groups for the What About Me Programme which will culminate with four days of activities in the final week of term. A letter will be sent to parents this week regarding the proposed activities and requirements during that week. That week is normally the scheduled camp for Year 9. Given the ongoing COVID restrictions an overnight camp will not be conducted, however this is part of the

camp and pastoral programme and is considered to be compulsory for all students. An email with exams for this term was sent to all parents last week. Can I ask students and parents to check this and be aware of the day and venue for all of these upcoming exams. All Year 9 students have now completed their round 2 subject selection for year 10 in 2021. In Term 4 an email with the selected choices will be sent to students for them to check and discuss with parents. I would like to encourage all students to take part in the cross country which is scheduled for this Wednesday. It is important to continue to be active and to engage in the house competition in this disrupted year.

Year 10

With a Boarder weekend and a four day week this week, Year 10 students are planning for upcoming assessment. Subject selections, round 2, have all been submitted and the School is looking at distributions for subject to be placed on lines for round 3. The School will also be examining student preferences given that some subjects may not be viable in 2021. Students should also be planning their Senior Education and Training Plan having received their RGS Portfolio and instructions on what to include. Once all of the above has been finalised, Year 10s will have a scheduled SET Plan interview in the Secondary School Office.

Year 11

At this stage in Term 3, we begin to start looking at Leadership in both Form and Leadership sessions in preparation for Leadership applications and taking the reins in Year 12. Leadership application forms for Captains (School, House and Co-curricular), Prefects, Committee Chairs and Form Seniors have been available from Monday of last week. These can be collected from the Secondary School Office and are also on Student Café. For each of these positions, students will need to return a completed application form, Leadership Credits form and a

signed parental consent letter/email. The parental consent email/letter is crucial as it is important parents are aware and accepting of the additional demands of the positions’ students are electing to take responsibility for. All applications are due to the Secondary School Office by 3pm Monday, 12 October (Week 2, Term 4). Please be aware that no late applications will be accepted. Once the submission date is closed, applications will be reviewed and interviews conducted where necessary. Those students applying for School Captain positions will need to speak to the cohort on Wednesday, 14 October at 2pm. All speeches do need to be reviewed, hence need to be submitted by 3pm Monday, 12 October at the very latest. Further information regarding when students will be informed as to whether they are successful or not will be provided in Term 4. If you do have any questions that have not been addressed above, please don’t hesitate to contact me. A reminder also that we are fast approaching end of Year 11 exams. This exam block will be held in weeks 7 and 8 of this term (next week). Students should be working solidly towards producing their best efforts on these pieces. If there are any concerns, please let me know – I am here to help! The exam schedule was emailed earlier in the Term and is also available in the Year 11 Leadership folder on Student Share drive.

Year 12

The long weekend arrived at the perfect time for our Year 12 students providing them with the opportunity to head home, reenergise and revitalise before returning to school to prepare for their eternal exams. From week 6 preparations for the mock assessments will be in full swing. For parents wanting to make arrangements for the holidays, mock assessments commence on 8 September and conclude on 18 September. All students have been emailed their schedules to allow for adequate planning time. Students will only be required at school for their actual exams, with boarders required to return to the dorms the night prior to any exam to allow for any potential mishaps. If you would like any specific information for your child, please do not hesitate to contact me and I can have a look through their schedule with you. Further information regarding the mock assessments will be emailed out in due course. In the coming weeks, the Year 12s have a few things to look forward to which will provide a welcome break from their ongoing studies. These include the cross-country and Farmers challenge.

Co-Curriculum

Chess Primary and secondary chess had a very successful day last Thursday at the Inter-School Chess Championships. Both RGS Primary and Secondary teams won and qualified to represent CQ North district at the Brisbane state finals in October. In addition to the team win, Oliver Dunn (Year 9) placed individual first, Thayaghan Vignarajah (Year 11) placed second and Jane Brighton (Year 11) received a Ribbon of Merit. Both secondary teams played well with all displaying resilience, courtesy, determination and respect.

This event will be held at School with individual age groups coming out of class to run their respective distance and then returning to class.
