“What’s a Sistah 2 Do?”

4 Richmond Woman Magazine - where the men might wear the pants, but the women pick them out!

I have been baking for quite some time. I just have to praise God, that I have been able to take something that I love and turn it into a business that blesses people. Some people say that anyone can bake - I guess that’s true, but when you buy your wedding or birthday cake from me you will taste the passion that I have for baking. It brings me so much joy to see the look of sweet satisfaction on someone’s face when they have sampled one of my unique bars. My business is also order based, so no matter what the event, I can make your cake, pies, cookies or bars just the way you like ‘em!

I know that many business owners wear many different hats. For example, I am a wife, mother and a grandmother. I have worked for Chesterfield County Public schools for long time, but I have been a proud Lancer since 1992! I also attend Mt. Gilead Full Gospel International Ministries. I am constantly busy, but I know I have to make time for the business that God has blessed me with. And I just want to encourage you, if you are scared to start your

sweet satisfaction

own business - go do it!! Go walk in your purpose! Or if you currently own a business, continue on your journey - just remember there are giants before the land of milk and honey. You may have to fight to get to your goal, but it will be worth it in the end!

I love to meet new people and I love to support the local Richmond market! You may have seen me at the Broad Street festival, the State Fair, County fair, the Brunswick Stew Festival, the Brandermill Market, Umbrella Farmer’s Market, Byrd Farmer’s Market, 17th Street Market or even the Tomato Festival. If you haven’t seen me at one of those events, be sure to look for me and stop by my booth! I’d love to meet you and give you sample that your taste buds won’t soon forget!

At Bernie’s Baked Goods we are gearing up for Thanksgiving orders. Call me for a Thanksgiving dessert that will give you sweet satisfaction!!!

My name is Beth Frazier. I'm 31 years old, a wife and a daughter of 2. I was diagnosed with breast cancer July 24, 2012. Tomorrow marks my one year anniversary of my bi-lateral mastectomy.

My mother had breast cancer, twice. My grandmother and her mother. My aunt and all of my female cousins. When my mother was diagnosed the second time, the Breast Cancer gene testing was just introduced. We jumped on the opportunity to have me tested. I came back negative. AWESOME! I'm safe! My mother was next to be tested - our doctor said sometimes it doesn't come in the form of a mutated gene. She came back negative. Back to square one.

That was in 2003. Nine years later, I made the phone call to my mother. I didn't quite know what to say, but I knew if I started off with "Are you sitting down?" she

would've known something was wrong. She answered the phone with her normal, cheerful "Hi Bethie". Here we go.....I'll never forget the sound of her crying when I told her "They found a lump."

Everything from there went by so fast it all seems like a blur. There are moments where I remember every little detail and there are moments that perhaps my own mind has shut out.

I have 2 daughters of my own. They are what drive me to help researchers find a cure. I've done all of the research I can, and I keep at it every single day. I'm hoping the semi-new high frequency ultrasound procedure from UVA will be approved before my daughters ever need it. If it's not - we move on to thenext plan.

We will find a cure. One day. Beth FrazierView my full story at: http://richmondmetrowoman.com/directory/listing/beth_frazier_a_richmond_warrior_chic/

My name is Kim and I am a breast cancer survivor. On June 24, 2006, I felt a lump in my right breast, unsure of what it was I asked my mother a 30 year CNA to feel it and give me her opinion. My mother felt the lump and then she looked at me straight in the eye with a very serious look and said “make an appointment with your doctor”. That following Monday morning first thing I called my doctor’s office told them what I felt and instead of them telling me to come into their office they immediately gave me a referral for a mammogram. My mom and I went to the doctor’s office and he hits me with “the lump in your breast is CANCER”. I was in total shock and could not believe what this doctor was telling me. I couldn’t hear anything else other than the word CANCER. I was devastated at the least, not knowing what in the world was going to happen to me. I was then scheduled for a mastectomy on September 11, 2006 , my four chemotherapy sessions were to begin November 2006 and I started hormonal therapy medication Tamoxifen a week after my last chemotherapy session.

All in all I remain cancer free for 7 years and counting. This was a difficult yet enlightening experience for me and my family. I see life in a totally different way now. I now know that I MUST live life to the fullest because it can be taken away at any given time. I look back on all that I went through and embrace it. God has kept me on this earth for a great reason and this is what has inspired me to begin Kimmy’s Angels 4 Tatas which is a non-profit organization for breast cancer. We are a hands on organization that provides house cleaning, lawn care and transportation to and from chemotherapy/doctor appointments. We must all BE AWARE and remember that early detection is key. I am hoping that all women continue to have their yearly mammograms, clinical breast exams and do their breast self-exams. 10 Richmond Woman Magazine - where the men might wear the pants, but the women pick them out!

I am 41 years old and a 2 year survivor. I would be happy to share my story, I just don't have the time to sit down and write an essay right at this moment! lol A little bit of background, I am married and I have 2 boys, they were 7 and 9 when I was diagnosed. I also have a yellow lab who got me through more bad moments than I care to remember - she spent hours on the couch with me and let me cry into her fur often. :) I had a double mastectomy, chemo, Herceptin, and radiation. I also had reconstructive surgery. I have had a lot of ups, downs, and roadblocks along the way. But I'm happy to say that I'm healthy and feeling good.

I'm not going to lie, this is not going to be an easy fight, it will be the hardest thing that you have ever done. You will have dark days, and I truly believe there are times when you just need to let yourself cry. However, do not allow yourself to wallow - find the strength you didn't know you had an pull yourself up by your boot straps. And above all - embrace joy! Learn to find it in the smallest details and moments of your life, and laugh whenever possible - it will get you through the darkness.

It was a beautiful sun filled day and the sun cascaded over the building as I entered my doctor’s office on Libby Ave. I entered a room where my doctor was viewing the mammogram, with a team that consisted of my surgeon, a radiologist, anesthesiologist, and a breast cancer specialist. As I sat down, my doctor gently said to me that I had what appeared to be stage 2 breast cancer. As he proceeded with the information, I heard nothing else but cancer and was afraid I was going to die. I don’t remember leaving the doctor’s office or driving home. My husband, daughters, sisters and friends were anxiously awaiting the results and it really hit me when I had to repeat, “I have breast cancer.” This was in 1993 and I was 50 years.

After the initial shock of learning that I had stage 2 Lobular Carcinoma in Situ breast cancer in my right breast, I became determined to educate myself

about the disease. I decided on a mastectomy with reconstruction identified as the TRAM or transverse flap performed by a plastic surgeon and I am happy to declare that I am pleased with the procedure and results. I also became a certified speaker, advocate and ambassador on breast cancer.

Life was good. I was employed with Richmond, Public Schools, enrolled at J. Sergeant Reynolds Community college where I obtained my associate degree in Early Childhood Education in 2002. I also joined Sisters Network Richmond, VA Inc., An Affiliate Chapter of Sisters Network® Inc., A National Breast Cancer Survivorship Organization.

In 2007 I had my routine mammogram and it was suspicious again. I was diagnosed a second time with stage 1 Lobular Carcinoma In Situ left breast. Was I shocked again, Yes, Discouraged, No. I feel God prepared me for this 2 time journey and this sista is truly blessed. I became an educator, ambassador, and advocate for breast cancer. But most of all he provided me with a Christian fellowship with him, my family, church family, friends, and the community by his word. To know God and his word is to love him. He does not give you anything that you can’t bear even though it made seen hard at the time of your bumps in the road. Philippians Chapter 4 Verse 13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (KJV) He has given me the strength to persevere, stamina to persist, and knowledge to pursue. In 2007 at age 64 I obtained my Bachelorship of Arts Degree in Sociology from Mary Baldwin’s Adult Degree Program and today at age 70, I am pursuing my masters’ degree from Virginia State College in Psychology. God is Good! The journey continues…
