Le6er from the Execu*ve Director

NETWORKING TAKES TIME Every me you expose your business to a

new person, it could be a golden oppor-

tunity down the road.

It frustrates me when I hear people say that they didn’t get any new business AT

a parcular event. I once had a non-member markeng consultant tell me

he’d join our Chamber if he signed a new client at the one luncheon he a3ended.

Really? A few years ago, a banker told me she didn’t get any new customers at the Rocky River Chamber’s Business Expo,

she wanted to walk away from the event with new checking accounts opened, which to me is a very short-sighted way to

think about networking. Networking is not about instant re-

sults. Networking takes *me. If you take advantage of the opportunies to meet and develop relaonships with as many

people as possible, some of those people may come back to you down the road seeking your products/services. Take the

*me to earn their trust.

I will use our Business Expo as an example. The people who an

exhibitor meets at Expo might not need your services at that me. Remember, customers choose their product/service

providers on THEIR meframe, not on YOUR meframe. But when they are ready, they may remember the nice conversa-

ons they had with you at Expo. A person isn’t going to decide to sell their house because they met a real estate agent at

Expo; a person isn’t going to decide to paint their house, change their insurance, hire an a3orney or order a sign while

they are at Expo just because you want them to do so immedi-

ately. But when they are READY, they may remember the kind person they met whose pen has been siOng on their desk for

the last year or two, which they picked up at Expo.

Many mes over the last eight years, I’ve taken calls from Ex-

po a3endees who described to me a parcular Expo exhibi-tor’s table and asked me how to contact that business. They

described the table locaon, something about the person who was working at the table or something that they remember

about the business. I’ll go back to Expo floorplans to figure out who it was so that I can connect that a3endee with the exhibi-

tor. Somemes it was from Expo two or three years ago. But that Expo a3endee was now READY to ulize the services of

that exhibitor.

I have two similar examples of when I was READY. I was ex-

posed to a church and a gym several years ago, but I was not

ready to transion to either one at the me I learned about them. But eventually, due to the circumstances in my life, I

was ready and I remembered the posive experience I had when I was exposed to the people from church and the gym.

Now I’m commi3ed to both.

I’ve been networking for many years, but I never really knew I

was unl I realized the importance of it when I started working

at the Chamber. Nor did I realize how long-term networking is.

Every single person I’ve encountered in my life is a vehicle for networking. I recently spoke to a group of college students

and told them that someday they may be helping each other, so stay in touch and don’t burn bridges. So many of the new

members I’ve brought in to the Chamber are through connec-ons I’ve made throughout my life….a friend of my sister or

the brother of a friend, someone from my old neighborhood in

Lakewood, an old colleague or a classmate. Whenever I meet someone around here, before talking business I try to find a

common connecon, usually I can get to just two or three de-grees of separaon. That’s the beauty of living in a smaller city

(and being the youngest of eight kids) and one of the reasons I’m glad I moved back to the west side of Cleveland a6er living

in Chicago and Sea3le for 17 years.

Networking is far-reaching and, I repeat, takes me. Network-

ing is not about instant results. If you take advantage of the opportunies to meet and develop relaonships with as many

people as possible, you might find that someone’s spouse, sister, cousin, neighbor or colleague could become a potenal

new client someday. Every connecon could open a door and

provide an opportunity. Some people are in businesses where networking can be instant, for example if you sell cupcakes.

Talk to me about the cupcakes you sell and I might suddenly want a cupcake. But for many people I meet, they’re selling

something that people only decide upon just a few mes in their lifeme…like a bank, payroll company, insurance agent,

tle company or remodeler. Chances are good you’re not go-ing to make a decision about a major service provider based

on one encounter with a salesperson….that is why building relaonships is so important. People need to build trust in

you. Then when the me arrives for one of your connecons to make a decision to choose someone in your field, they al-

ready know they’d like to do business with you. This could be a

year or two or five down the road.

What you get out of membership in the Chamber of Com-

merce depends on how much you put into it. It’s like when I go to Weight Watchers…I’m not going to lose weight just by

siOng at the meengs, I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work (see cupcake reference above), I have to take acon when I walk

out the door of the meeng. At the Chamber, we have a calen-dar FULL of events where our members can connect with oth-

er members repeatedly and build relaonships. But connec-ons aren’t going to be made if you’re not there, fully present

and making an effort to get to know new people (not just give them your business card). Talking with a person you met at a

previous event can help to build a stronger trusng relaon-ship with that person. Being on a commi3ee is an even be3er

way to build relaonships! It takes *me to build trust, but

people want to do business with those they trust.

The more engaged, open, friendly and connected people we

have in our business community, then the be3er our commu-nity becomes and that is beneficial to all of us. So thank you

for strengthening our business community.

Sincerely, Liz Manning, Execuve Director
