Dear RJ Lang Families,
We survived the first month of the 2016-2017 school year! It has been an amazing start
and boy have we been busy!
Here’s what we’ve accomplished so far...
Our Cross Country Team has already started training and our Boys and Girls Baseball
Teams are out on the diamond and ready to play!
Our Welcome Back BBQ & Curriculum Night was a HUGE success. It's was a great
opportunity to meet community members, teachers and staff and find out about class
routines, student expectations, program overviews and ways to support your child.
Our first Scholastic Book fair was a great success and a wonderful way of giving our
students easy access to fun, engaging reading material which is the best way to
develop their love of reading.
We honoured Terry Fox by hosting our own run to raise money and the students
awareness of Cancer research. “Anything is possible if you try”
Our Grade 7 students spent 3 glorious days to Mono Cliff’s a year round outdoor
education centre that links the love of outdoors to the Ontario Science & Technology
Curriculum.
And lastly, we re-organized our Grade 1-6 classes and over 100 students very
successfully.
It is a pleasure to walk the halls of our beautiful school and see our happy, respectful
and engaged students ;as well as work with the most dedicated staff in the TDSB. I
looking forward to coming to work each and every day!
Our motto: Every student, Every day!” Believe it! Do it! Achieve it!
Kind Regards,
Shari Green-Brown

Safe Arrival Program
One measure of keeping students safe is
ensuring students have safely arrived at
school. If your child is going to be late or
absent for any reason, it is important
that you contact the office immediately
and report the reason for the absence.
At the Toronto District School Board
(TDSB) we have an automated call-out
system that will attempt to contact you
if your child is late or absent on the day
where the school was not previously
informed.
We recognize that regular attendance
is essential to the safety, academic
success, and well-being of all students.
Thank you for your continued coopera-
tion to keep your child safe and ac-
counted for. Our Safe Arrival Telephone
Number is:
416 395-2780 At the prompt Press # 1

Nutrition Programs
Our mid-morning snack program has begun.
Students receive a nutritious snack within the
school day. Families will be asked every three
months to contribute $15.00 per child to the
program. Staff work to ensure that all foods
served in the program are in line with
Canada’s Food Guide.

PICK-UP/DROP OFF ROUTINES
The safety of our students is a top pri-
ority. All RJ Lang students will have an
assigned pick-up and drop-off spot.
Spots will marked with a orange
letter or number on the concrete at
each of the entry/exit
doors. Please walk your
child to their classroom
line-up spot.
Parents, please wait behind the
designated line marked
with pylons to ease
congestion at the
classroom lines.
Thank you for your continued support
in keeping all our students safe.
Please remember that when parents are late
their children often get very worried and
anxious. If you are more than 5 minutes late you
will likely find your child in the main office. Many
of our older children travel to and from school
independently. Please ensure your child knows
what your expectations are regarding his/her
travel to and from school.

Safety &
The Bus
Loop
The safety of staff, students and our community members is our top priority. We have
changed the parking lot and bus route procedures for parents to ensure everyone is
safe.
At 8:10 a.m. the parking lot gates will be locked and will not be unlocked
until 9:00a.m.
Parents and buses will be directed to use the bus loop/Kiss & Ride ONLY. Supervision
begins in the school yard at 8:15 a.m.
Parents are asked pull up to the Kiss & Ride loop, a staff member will open the car
door, help the student out of the car and parents will then be asked to move along
quickly.
Since we have 12 school busses dropping off students in the morning, parents might
find themselves stuck behind a school bus until it has unloaded the students safely.
Please DO NOT park your car in the lane way leading up to the bus loop as this
causes unnecessary traffic and safety issues for the students that are walking to
school.
Parents do have the option of walking their child(ren) to school or parking on a side
street and walking their child(ren) into the school yard.
Thank you for helping us keep our community safe.

Hallowe'en provides an opportunity for parents and children to
spend time together creating costumes, carving pumpkins,
planning trick or treat activities and participating in family parties.
Hallowe'en is a big event at schools and provides opportunities for
parties, creative activities, art programs and impromptu history
lessons. Hallowe'en is also a time for students, parents, and schools to take extra care to ensure
safety and security.
If parents are concerned about trick or treating, here are some basic safety rules to follow:
• Children should NEVER eat any treats until parents have had a chance to go through them
and inspect them. Parents should look for tampering of packages and discard any they believe
to be unsafe or unknown.
• Have your child carry a flashlight.
• NEVER go into a stranger's house.
• NEVER trick or treat with people you do not know.
• Trick or treat only at homes you know.
• Children should always stay in groups if no parent is present.
• Younger children should ALWAYS be accompanied by an older person.
• Accompany your child when trick or treating.
• Flame resistant (retardant) costumes are in order. Keep costumes short and remind children to
stay away from pumpkins with candles in them.
• Remind children to stay away from pets they do not know.
• Remind children of road safety rules. Cross only at corners. Do not
criss-cross the road. Go up one side of the road and down the
other side. Never cross between parked cars. Walk facing
on-coming traffic if there is no sidewalk
• Remind children that not everyone celebrates Hallowe'en, and
to avoid any homes that have no lights on. Also remind children
not to run through neighbours yards or gardens.
• With older children, be sure to know what other events
(such as parties) they plan on attending.
• Set time limits when children should return home.

GRADE 8 TO 9 TRANSITION
PROCESS
This year the grade 8 students will begin to explore and understand the
overall transitioning process from grade 8 to 9. There will be a parent
information session on Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 in the school
Cafeteria. It is highly recommended that all grade 8 families attend this
very important meeting. This session will provide information about key
dates, timelines, Optional Attendance procedures, Secondary School
programs and requirements, Secondary School Open House dates and
times, Course Selection and much more. Grade 7 parents who are
interested in learning about this process are also welcome to attend.
Student information sessions will take place throughout the month of
October. Students will also learn about the Specialized Programs offered
at various high schools. The goal of these sessions is to provide every
grade 8 student and their family with the information they need to make
informed and confident decisions regarding their secondary school
program. If you have any questions, please contact our guidance
counsellor Kevin Williams at [email protected]

The Parent Council is made up of all parents and guardians of RJ Lang students. The
Executive of the Parent Council acts as a representative for parents and liaises with the
school administration on a regular basis.
The Parent Council meets on a monthly basis to keep informed regarding school
activities initiated by both the school staff and the Parent Council. The Parent Council
organizes and implements various programs, events and campaigns.
A great way to find out more about what is going on at school as well as at the TDSB is
to attend a Parent Council meeting. The meetings are held monthly. All parents are
invited to attend, each month during the school year. These meetings will often
include a speaker or will focus on a specific issue that is felt to be relevant to Parent
Council members.
Please join us for our next Parent Council meeting on
Thursday October 20th, 2016 at 6:30 in the Staffroom.
Our meeting will begin with a presentation from the TDSB Design
& Tech Department who will be discussing the details of our
scheduled roof repair.
