RNQG 2020-21 Programs September 16, 2020 7 – 9 PM ZOOM meeting Topic: Happy New Quilting Year, RNQG! Gather (virtually) with fellow RNQG members as the new quilting season begins! Program planning is always a daunting task – more so this year with the challenges resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Karen Leblanc has done an amazing job coordinating interesting and varied topics for the 2020-21 guild year. Join the meeting to hear her talk about the scheduled programs (and workshops!) and see photo samples of works by the upcoming guest speakers. Also featured this evening is a display of summer challenge quilts and member show-and-tell for projects finished during the summer months. It is always fun (and often humbling) to see the beautiful work of our talented members! September 20, 2020 10AM – 4PM ZOOM workshop (current plan) Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill Website: wholecirclestudio.com Sunday Workshop: Hawaiian Inspired Appliqué Member Fee: $65 Non-Member Fee: $75 Sheri was our final speaker of the 2019-20 quilting year, representing Aurifil as an expert on thread. Her personal display of quilts was fresh, colorful, executed with precision, and absolutely delightful. During this workshop, Sheri teaches how to make a modern interpretation of a traditional Hawaiian quilt. Students will learn how to prepare the appliqué (including folding, cutting, and basting) and how to apply the motif using needle-turn appliqué techniques. In Sheri’s words, “This is a fun, relaxing, slow-stitching workshop.” No stress! The class includes a brief introduction to traditional Hawaiian quilts, best practices, step-by- step instructions, and quilting tips. Pattern for the class is Sheri’s Big Island Blossom which finishes to a 34” square. The cost of the pattern is included in the workshop fee. Since patterns will be mailed to participants you must enroll before September 2, 2020 to ensure it will arrive prior to the date of the workshop. Topic: Happy New Quilting Year, RNQG!

Gather (virtually) with fellow RNQG members as the new quilting season begins!

Program planning is always a daunting task – more so this year with the challenges resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Karen Leblanc has

done an amazing job coordinating interesting and varied topics for the 2020-21 guild year. Join the meeting to hear her talk about the

scheduled programs (and workshops!) and see photo samples of works by the upcoming guest speakers.

Also featured this evening is a display of summer challenge quilts and member show-and-tell for projects finished during the summer months. It is always fun (and often humbling) to see the beautiful work of our talented members!

Sheri was our final speaker of the 2019-20 quilting year, representing Aurifil as an expert on thread. During this workshop, Sheri teaches how to make a modern interpretation of a traditional Hawaiian quilt. Linda Pearl Websites: onequiltingcircle.com and thepatchworkpearl.com Topic: “But I Didn’t Mean to Break the Rules…”

This lecture takes a lighthearted look at a very serious subject. Copyright infringement is a huge problem in today’s world, quilting included. Linda details several common scenarios (drawn from real life events), and breaks them down into easy to understand, easier to remember rules of the game. By the end of the evening, we will all know the rules and understand how to respect the intellectual property of others!

It wouldn’t be surprising if Linda’s name and face are familiar to you. A resident of Nashua, New Hampshire, she changed careers in 2007, going from “Big Box” retail management to quilting. She describes herself as, “a quilter, a speaker, a teacher…and someone who enjoys hanging out with other creative forces of nature.”

Linda does a little bit of lots of different things in the industry including bus trips, retreats, and pattern design. She is also the author of an online quilting newsletter "Cornerstones." Her website onequiltingcircle is her “creative home” on the web; thepatchworkpearl is directed to small business owners who need guidance in growing their customer base, making their businesses more profitable and/or easier to manage.

Linda is a member of the Craft Industry Alliance, the New England Quilt Museum and the International Association of Creative Arts Professionals.

Betsy Habich Website: betsyhabich.com Trunk Show: “The Joy of Fabric (and Thread)!”

Betsy Habich is a lover of fabric, thread, fabric dyeing,

botanical contact prints, eco-printing, shibori, tapestry by machine and cats (not necessarily in that order).

In Betsy’s words, this lecture / trunk show is “…about my life-long love of fabric and thread and exploration of

its possibilities. Starting with my first quilt made with my early crewel- and batik-work, through sampler quilts, early pieced picture quilts from my studies with Ruth

McDowell, to experiments with realism using painting, appliqué, and thread painting, with a few guilty diversions into fun stuff like Stack-n-Whack. My subjects range from 9/11 to my nephews, with cats, flowers, and landscape being repeat subjects.”

Betsy’s work has received awards at regional quilt shows including the Vermont Quilt Festival, The Gathering, and Machine Quilters Expo (MQX). She has also had quilts juried into national shows, including International Quilt Association (IQA/Houston) and American Quilters Society (AQS/Paducah). She has taught at Fiber College of Maine, Connections Quilt Festival, and at guilds. One-woman shows have featured her quilts locally at shops and libraries. She lives with her husband, three cats, and a happy studio full of fabric and thread.

November 18, 2020 10AM – 4PM ZOOM workshop (current plan)

Betsy Habich Wednesday Workshop (same day but prior to guild meeting) : Picture Piecing Member Fee: $65 Non-Member Fee:$75

This full-day workshop teaches Betsy’s technique for piecing art quilts. Her basis is freezer paper templates, drawn seam lines and registration marks. The real magic happens with fabric choices. She teaches participants how to look at fabric differently -- finding sections with variation in color, texture and line that suggest the curve of the petal, the direction of the light, or fur. Using this process for each piece of the pattern template results in a quilt with enhanced movement and interest.

Students will use one of Betsy’s patterns. Much time in the workshop will be spent selecting, cutting and marking pieces and mocking up work on a design board. The goal is to complete the design and sew a few seams before the end of the class.

The cost of the pattern is included in the workshop fee. Since patterns will be mailed to participants, pattern choice must be made by November 1, 2020 to ensure they will arrive prior to the date of the workshop.

Beth Sullivan Website: bethsullivandesigns.com Topic: “Quilts to a Tee: Using T-Shirts and Unique Clothing in Quilts”

In many ways, a T-shirt quilt can be regarded as a fabric scrapbook. It is a warm and functional item that is often used to acknowledge a landmark event such as a birthday, graduation, anniversary or retirement. The origins of the T-shirt quilt are a mystery; it was likely born during the 1970’s. Beth Sullivan is a local expert when it comes to T-shirt quilts. The first she made for herself using shirts collected during her high school and college years. Her friends were delighted with the result and started asking her to make quilts for them and their children. The hobby ultimately grew into a business. Beth now specializes in creating custom T-shirt quilts, memory quilts and memory pillows. But her art has evolved to incorporate more than T-shirts. She takes great delight in using unique items, including pants, sweaters, bathing suits, pajamas, ties, tote bags, socks, bibs, scarves, ribbons, underwear and countless others! The lecture this evening is ideal for any quilter who has toyed with the idea of making a T-shirt or memory quilt. Though most have seen quilts that fall into these categories, many are stymied on how to get started and have no idea how to include interesting items in their design. Quilt samples and photos are used to demonstrate how to expand the possibilities of the conventional T-shirt quilt to include baby clothes or ties. Please note: if enough people are interested, a 3-hour Zoom Workshop can be scheduled with Beth. Member fee: $30 Non-member fee: $35

Beth Helfter Website: evapaigequilts.com Topic: “Perfection is Overrated”

In November 2019, Beth Helfter was hosted by RNQG to teach a workshop about her brainchild “Accordion Sewn” Half-Square Triangles. Her technique is an amazing time-saver for lovers of HST patterns. She is not only a wonderful teacher, Beth is witty and articulate –we couldn’t wait to invite her back to charm the entire membership of the guild!

This evening’s program is a lively presentation of Beth’s quiltmaking journey. Follow her along the path from her first “frighteningly awful” attempt at self-taught quilting to the present day: founder/owner of EvaPaige Quilt Designs which features her line of unique patterns.

Included are thoughts on the design process as it unfolds in 20-minute increments (in the midst of the chaos of running a home and raising three small children); how a quilt can be a thing of beauty even without matching seams and perfect points; and the many joys of bringing her designs to the masses. She often discovers that listeners can become converts to the freeing idea that “perfection is overrated”.

Beth recently published a new book “Another Round of Oompah: More Accordion Sewn HSTs to Make Your Scrap Quilts Sing”.

Allison Wilbur Website: allisonwilburquilts.com Topic: “Trip Around the World” If you are hoping this lecture will focus on the classic quilt pattern that shares the name of this lecture, then you may be disappointed, but not for long. It is something far more exciting! Allison is an award-winning longarm quilter and quilt artist who spent decades living abroad. Her experiences have brought “global textiles, color combinations, and design elements into her quilts”, but these are often paired with traditional American piecing. During this lecture, you will learn about quilting, appliqué, and patchwork traditions in other countries and how to enhance your experience as you travel with a “quilter’s eye.” Allison shares textiles and quilted pieces from Japan, Oman, India, Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, Jordan, Thailand, Myanmar and many other countries. She also shares some of her quilts made with global fabrics and talks about Quilt for Change, a project she founded which uses the art of quilting to inspire social change.

Allison Wilbur Website: allisonwilburquilts.com ½ Day Workshop: Sashiko – by hand Member Fee: $30 Non-Member Fee:$35

Learn about the traditional Japanese art of sashiko -- white stitching on indigo fabric. Allison begins the day with the history of sashiko in Japan and a sampling of traditional patterns. She will then demonstrate how to transfer patterns, how to start and end the hand stitched line, and more complex forms of sashiko.

A variety of samples are displayed to show how you can use sashiko stitching to embellish your quilts and make a number of beautiful handmade gifts. Students should expect to complete a pillow-sized piece in this workshop. This workshop is perfect for any level of expertise.
