Dear Parents and Students, Winter is almost over and spring is just around the corner. The weather is starting to improve and with the end of another school year on the horizon, our biggest challenges remain ahead of uskeeping students focused on school work and strongly finishing out the school year. The marathon is not over when you are nearly three quarters of the way through the race. Many of the students have made tremendous progress this year and we don’t want anyone to take a step back. One way to help keep your students focused is to attend Spring Parent Teacher Conferences, Thursday March 10 th from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. This is an excellent opportunity to meet your child’s new teachers and hear how they are doing in this new semester. When you arrive you will pick up your student’s progress report at the table in the lobby area. You may then go meet with as many teachers as you would like for a brief (five-minute) conference. If you are unable to attend Parent Teacher Conferences your student will receive their progress report on Friday, March 11 th . Please take time to discuss this report with your child. Congratulations to Connor Campbell, a 9 th grade Trombone player here at Shelby. Connor won a Louis Gonda Scholarship. He can use this scholarship for his future music education. Not only do our students excel in fine arts but two of our students won writing awards in a national competition. Grace Ciaramella (8 th ) is the winner and Rebecca Viviano (8 th ) is the runner up in a national writing contest. They submitted essays to the America and Me Essay Contest sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Great job representing Shelby in such a positive manner Connor, Grace, and Rebecca!!! Lastly, several parents have asked me the question ―How are Governor Snyder’s budgets cuts going to impact Shelby Junior High and/or Utica Community Schools?‖ First I want to let you know that the state budget is not finalized. Really I do not know the total impact of any cuts in the school state aide and I do not want to speculate. What I do know is that I, along with our Shelby staff and district support, are committed to providing the students with a world class education to prepare them for the 21 st century work force. We will do our best to educate our students no matter what the budget. Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter and I hope to see you at parent teacher conferences on March 10 th . Dear Parents and Students,

Winter is almost over and spring is just around the corner. The weather is starting to improve and with the end of another school

year on the horizon, our biggest challenges remain ahead of us—keeping students focused on school work and strongly finishing

out the school year. The marathon is not over when you are nearly three quarters of the way through the race. Many of the

students have made tremendous progress this year and we don’t want anyone to take a step back.

One way to help keep your students focused is to attend Spring Parent Teacher Conferences, Thursday March 10th

from

4:30 to 7:30 pm. This is an excellent opportunity to meet your child’s new teachers and hear how they are doing in this new

semester. When you arrive you will pick up your student’s progress report at the table in the lobby area. You may then go meet

with as many teachers as you would like for a brief (five-minute) conference. If you are unable to attend Parent Teacher

Conferences your student will receive their progress report on Friday, March 11th

. Please take time to discuss this report with

your child.

Congratulations to Connor Campbell, a 9th grade Trombone player here at Shelby. Connor won a Louis Gonda Scholarship. He

can use this scholarship for his future music education. Not only do our students excel in fine arts but two of our students won

writing awards in a national competition. Grace Ciaramella (8th) is the winner and Rebecca Viviano (8

th) is the runner up in a

national writing contest. They submitted essays to the America and Me Essay Contest sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance.

Great job representing Shelby in such a positive manner Connor, Grace, and Rebecca!!!

Lastly, several parents have asked me the question ―How are Governor Snyder’s budgets cuts going to impact Shelby Junior

High and/or Utica Community Schools?‖ First I want to let you know that the state budget is not finalized. Really I do not know

the total impact of any cuts in the school state aide and I do not want to speculate. What I do know is that I, along with our

Shelby staff and district support, are committed to providing the students with a world class education to prepare them for the

21st century work force. We will do our best to educate our students no matter what the budget.

Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter and I hope to see you at parent teacher conferences on March 10th.

FROM THE MAIN OFFICE – THINGS TO KNOW

Students get the facts during morning and afternoon announcements

Every morning there are televised announcements for the students. The announcements give the students all necessary information regarding current and upcoming events here at Shelby Junior High, including upcoming sports try-outs. Please encourage your student to listen and write down any information that may be important for them. Unlike elementary school, notes will not be sent home regarding most upcoming events. You and your student must rely on both the newsletter and school announcements for information. Each afternoon last minute announcements are made at the end of the day. Any bus change announcements are made at this time. Students may be called down to the office at this time to pick up any deliveries that were made during the day for them. Please encourage your child to listen carefully.

Where did my gloves go? Where’s my missing book?

The Main Office hosts a lost and found with many items in it already this year. If your student has lost anything, please have your student check the main office to see if it is there. There is also a lost and found kept in the boys and girls locker room. If you are missing any gym clothes or shoes, you can have your student check that lost and found as well.

Cell phone use prohibited during school day The use of cell phones, pagers/beepers, or other electronic communication devices (ECD) by students is prohibited at any time while in school or on a district vehicle. Secondary students may carry ECDs, during the school day, but they cannot be displayed or used. Elementary students are not permitted to possess an ECD at any time. Students may not receive text messages or telephone calls on cell phones at any time, even from their parent. The use of an ECD’s picture taking or internet connection capability is not permitted. Utica Community Schools will not be responsible for the theft, loss or damage of any ECD, or music players of any type, including mp3 players or ipods. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against students who violate the policy regulating ECDs, which was approved by the Board of Education.

Variety of sources inform parents of school cancellations Inclement weather or building problems sometimes bring unexpected school closings. At Utica Community Schools there are several ways parents can be informed about these unanticipated days. School closing information is broadcast on radio stations WJR 760 and WWJ 950. Television stations airing school closing information are UCS TV, Channel 2 (WJBK), Channel 4 (WDIV) and Channel 7 (WXYZ). For parents connected to the web, the district’s web page, www.uticak12.org, lists school closings under the emergency school-closing button listed on the main page. You may also receive telephone calls from our mass parent communication system, for school closings and important upcoming events in our school.

Absentee call-in available 24 hours

Parents are reminded to call the school attendance line to report their child’s absence or tardiness. Students who are tardy or late to school must be called in, in order to be excused. The student must report to the Main Office upon arrival, to receive an excuse of absence pass. The classroom teacher handles tardiness between classes. Shelby has a designated telephone line to report student absences and tardiness. To inform the school of your child’s absence, or late arrival to school, please call (586) 797-3799 anytime.

Bus passes are a privilege

PLEASE NOTE: Bus passes are not issued on half days of school. Other arrangements will need to be made. Bus passes will be permitted if a bus has not reached capacity. Both students must submit a note from their parent to the Main Office before 1

st hour. The signed

note from the parent should include the student’s normal bus number as well as the bus number that they will be a visitor on. The pass needs to be picked up by one of the students later in the day.

Bus transportation will be provided as a courtesy for athletes that play a sport at Utica H.S. or Eisenhower H.S.

Busses will be available after school for athletes needing a ride to the high school on practice days only. The athletic busses are a convenience for students but please be aware that they are on a schedule and need to leave Shelby Junior High promptly at 3:10 p.m.

Athletes in the 9

th grade may need to have an early

dismissal from school on some occasions in order to make it to an away game or meet. This early dismissal requires parental permission. A signed note from a parent excusing the athlete from school early must be brought in to the office in the morning on the day of the event. The coaches at the high school are not allowed to excuse your child early from school for this reason.
