Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team concludes its 2012-13 non-con-ference schedule with a pair of road games, beginning Tuesday with an 8:00 p.m. tip againstLouisiana-Lafayette at the Cajundome in Lafayette, La. The Colonials are coming off a 91-69 vic-tory over Duquesne (12/15/12) that stretched their winning streak to four games. Redshirt seniorguard Velton Jones led four players in double figures scoring in RMU’s win over the Dukes witha season-high 22 points, converting six of his 10 shots from the field, including 4-for-6 from be-yond the arc, and going 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. He also added six assists. Redshirt juniorguard Coron Williams added a season-high 16 points, while junior forward Mike McFadden andsophomore forward Lucky Jones contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Robert Morris willwrap up its non-conference schedule after taking on the Ragin’ Cajuns Tuesday with an 8:00 p.m.tip against Arkansas Thursday, Dec. 20, at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Ark.

Quick Stat of the Night - Robert Morris was able to extend its winning streak to a season-highfour games in its 91-79 victory over Duquesne (12/15/12) thanks to an explosive offense in thesecond half. The Colonials hit each of their first eight shots from the field to open the second halfagainst the Dukes en route to a shooting percentage of 65.6 percent (21-for-32) after the break.RMU scored 60 points in the second half against Duquesne, the most points scored by the Colo-nials in a half against a Division I opponent since dropping 61 points in the second half of a 110-80 victory over LIU Brooklyn (2/8/90) at the Sewall Center. The school record for points in a halfis 67, which occurred in the second half of a 109-36 win over Division III Medaille (12/29/05), alsoat the Sewall Center.

Tuesday’s Opponent and The All-Time Series -Robert Morris and Louisiana-Lafayette will meetfor the second time on the hardwood Tuesday,with the Colonials having won the inauguralmeeting between the two programs thanks to a72-64 victory last season at the Charles L. SewallCenter (12/17/11). In that contest guard VeltonJones led four Colonials in double figures with 16points on the strength of a 10-for-13 showing at the free-throw line. Robert Morris trailed, 50-42, with 12:26 to play after a layup by Josh Brown of the Ragin’ Cajuns, but the Colonials used a20-5 run over the next nine minutes to take a 63-55 edge en route to the victory. Guard CoronWilliams tied the score, 52-52, with a three-pointer with 8:40 remaining, and forward LuckyJones gave RMU the lead for good with a fastbreak layup off a steal with 7:58 to play. Lucky Joneschipped in 12 points off the bench in the win, while Williams finished with 10 points.

When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of theColonials. He owns an overall record of 51-29 (.638).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82. Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials toan overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped RobertMorris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tour-nament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despitefalling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to thequarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in thefirst round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983. Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign,RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for afive-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league oppositionand have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or indi-vidual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program,from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes thathelped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Break Out - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones produced his best shooting night of the2012-13 campaign in a 91-69 victory over Duquesne (12/15/12), hitting six of his 10 shotsfrom the field, including 4-of-6 from long range, and going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line for a season-high 22 points. For Jones, it marked the 14th time in his career he’seclipsed 20 points in a game, which is tied for ninth all-time at Robert Morris. Jones is tiedwith former Colonials Gabe Jackson (1991-95) and Keith Jones (1995-99). RMU’s all-timeleader in career 20+ point games is all-time leading scorer Myron Walker, who turned thetrick 47 times from 1990 to 1994.

A&W Root Beer - Robert Morris has found its stroke during its four-game winning streak,as the Colonials enter Tuesday’s game @ Louisiana-Lafayette having shot 45.4 percent (94-for-207) from the field during its surge, including 42.7 percent (41-for-96) from beyond thearc. The junior guard duo of Karvel Anderson and Coron Williams has been extremely ef-fective, as they have combined to shoot 51.4 percent (36-for-70) from the floor, including54.2 percent (26-for-48) from deep. Anderson has been RMU’s main offensive threat thelast four games, averaging 15.3 points while shooting 58.3 percent (21-for-36) from the field,including 64.3 percent (18-for-28) from beyond the arc.

Tattoo You - In addition to the exploits of junior guards Karvel Anderson and CoronWilliams during RMU’s four-game surge, junior forward Mike McFadden has also given theColonials an offensive boost. Over the last four games, McFadden is supplying the Colonialswith averages of 8.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 75 percent (15-for-20) from the field. McFadden enters Tuesday’s game @ Louisiana-Lafayette ranked secondin the Northeast Conference in field goal percentage at 61.7 percent (37-for-60).

There’s An App For That - David Appolon has had the opportunity to see more action duringRMU’s four-game winning streak due to injuries, and the sophomore guard has responded.After not playing for six straight games, Appolon has averaged 6.8 points and 2.5 reboundsover the last four games while shooting 50 percent (9-for-18) from the field and 75 percent(6-for-8) at the free-throw line. Included in that stretch are career high totals in points (8),rebounds (4) and steals (4).

Lucky Charms - Lucky Jones seems to be coming into his own in his second season at RobertMorris, as the sophomore forward has averaged 12.3 points and 6.7 rebounds over his lastsix contests. During that stretch, Jones has converted 43.2 percent (19-for-44) of his shotsfrom the field and 83.8 percent (31-of-37) of his attempts at the free-throw line. Includedin that stretch is one of the best games of his young career in a 61-58 win @ Campbell(12/4/12) with a team-high 15 points, five rebounds and a career-high five steals.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and theproof is in the numbers. Jones enters Tuesday’s game @ Louisiana-Lafayette ranked thirdin the Northeast Conference in both assists (5.45 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio(2.22). Just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists, Jones needs 103assists to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant(1980-84). He would need to average 5.2 assists per game over RMU’s final 20 regular-seasoncontests to eclipse the mark.

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials postedan 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, convert-ing just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a completereversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Tuesday’s game@ Louisiana-Lafayette having shot 77.7 percent (195-for-251) at the chalk in its first 11 gamesof 2012-13, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference. Leading the way is redshirtsenior guard Velton Jones, who has converted 84.9 percent (62-for-73) of his attempts atthe chalk, which ranks third in the NEC.

50 Cent - Third-year head coach Andrew Toole picked up his 50th career victory thanks toRMU’s 66-54 win @ Hampton (12/8/12). The victory came in his 79th game on the sidelinesguiding the Colonials. Toole is the second fastest head coach in school history to reach 50career wins, trailing only former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10), who turned the trick inhis 72nd game at Robert Morris.

THE GREATEST COMEBACK ...Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history ingarnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the CharlesL. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, butthe Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. Itmarks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back fromin its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (2007-09) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonialsto the win over the Penguins.

WE’RE STREAKING Robert Morris has posted seven consecutive winning seasons, thelongest streak in school history. Since the beginning of the 2005-06campaign, the Colonials own an overall record of 156-85 (.647), includ-ing a mark of 90-36 (.714) in the Northeast Conference.

Scouting the Ragin’ Cajuns - Louisiana-Lafayette enters Tuesday’s game against Robert Morriswith an overall recor d of 4-7 (.364) and is coming off an 85-63 setback @ Houston (12/15/12).Redshirt freshman forward Shawn Long led the Ragin’ Cajuns against the Cougars with 20points, converting eight of his 15 shots from the floor and finishing 3-for-5 at the free-throwline while also grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore guard Elfrid Payton added 12 points and sixrebounds in the setback. Long leads Louisiana-Lafayette so far this season in both scoring andrebounding, producing averages of 17.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per contest while shooting 49percent (75-for-153) from the floor. Payton adds averages of 13.2 points and 5.2 assists pergame, while junior forward Bryant Mbamalu contributes 10.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per con-test.

Louisiana-Lafayette Head Coach - In his third season as head coach of the Ragin’ Cajuns and20th season overall is Bob Marlin (Mississippi State ’81). Marlin owns a record of 34-38 (.472)with Louisiana and an overall mark of 382-204 (.652). The 2010 Skip Prosser Man of the Yearaward winner, Marlin earned a five-year contract extension Dec. 4, 2012, which will keep himon the sidelines at Louisiana-Lafayette through the 2016-17 campaign.

RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris shot 65.6 percent (21-for-32) from the field in the secondhalf en route to its fourth straight victory, Dec. 15, with a 91-69 victory over Duquesne at theCharles L. Sewall Center. Nursing a 31-30 advantage entering the second half, junior forwardMike McFadden sandwiched a three-pointer from redshirt senior guard Velton Jones with alayup and a dunk to push RMU's advantage to 38-30 with 18:30 to play. Duquesne called time-out, but the Colonials kept up their offensive prowess, as a pair of three-pointers from redshirtsophomore guard Coron Williams, another from Jones and one from sophomore forward LuckyJones capped a 21-5 run to open the second half and give Robert Morris a 52-35 lead. On threeoccasions the Dukes would trim their deficit to 14, but RMU kept extending its advantage, even-tually taking an 84-59 cushion with 4:19 to play thanks to a pair of free throws from redshirtsenior forward Russell Johnson. Velton Jones scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the secondhalf for the Colonials, converting on six of his 10 shots from the floor, including 4-of-6 fromdeep, and producing a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free-throw line. He was one of playersin double figures for RMU, as Williams contributed a season-high 16 points, McFadden finishedwith 12 points on a 6-for-7 shooting night and Lucky Jones added 10 points and five rebounds.Duquesne opened the contest by hitting seven of its first nine shots from the field in buildingan 18-13 advantage at the 12:10 mark of the first half. Jerry Jones scored five points and AndreMarhold added four in the opening salvo for the Dukes. Martins Abele would convert a pair offree throws with 3:48 to play before halftime that would give Duquesne a 28-24 lead, but theColonials closed the first half on a 7-2 spurt to take a 31-30 advantage at intermission. Johnsonstarted the run with a three-pointer, and four straight points from Lucky Jones helped give theColonials the lead at the break. Robert Morris finished the game forcing Duquesne into 25turnovers, turning those into 19 steals and 31 points.

Block Party - It’s early in the 2012-13 campaign, but it may be safe to say that RobertMorris has never had as natural a shot blocker in school history than junior forwardVaughn Morgan. Through the first 11 games of the season, Morgan has recorded 16blocks, an average of 1.45 per contest that ranks third in the Northeast Conference be-hind Wagner’s Naofall Folahan (2.38) and Mario Moody (1.50). Based on his current av-erage, Morgan will shatter the Robert Morris single-season record for rejections. FormerColonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) finished with 35 blocks during the 2008-09 campaign,breaking a record that had stood for almost 25 years. Morgan, meanwhile, is on pace tofinish the regular season with 45 blocks.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting tothe free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victoryover Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jonespaced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at thecharity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (459) and free-throwattempts (633), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe atleast 10 times in a game. Jones enters Tuesday’s game @ Louisiana-Lafayette leading theColonials in both free throws (62) and free-throw attempts (73), a success rate of 84.9percent that ranks third in the Northeast Conference.

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting as-signments. Williams has started 53 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season,the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 con-secutive games before having it snapped last season.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressiveshooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Cen-ter, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyondthe arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shootingnight from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 winover Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second stu-dent-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc withouta miss. Former Colonial Scott Shepherd (1988-91) also finished 8-for-8 from deep in a110-80 win over LIU Brooklyn Feb. 8, 1990, at the Sewall Center. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four sea-sons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning thelongest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 115 straight contests for RMUdating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 109 career starts, far and away the high-est mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least100 career games, and he needs 12 starting assignments to break the school record of120 that is held by former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketballprogram over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 91-69 win overDuquesne (12/15/12), Robert Morris owns a record to 95-19 (.833) since the beginningof the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three sea-sons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 44-12 (.786) when turning thetrick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his secondseason as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in2011-12. In Toole’s 80 games on the sidelines over the last three seasons, RMU has heldits opponents to less than 70 points in 56 contests, an amazing 70 percent of the time.Included in those 56 contests are 25 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, withRMU owning an astounding mark of 24-1 (.960) in those games. The Colonials finished the game with a shooting per-centage of 50.7 percent (34-for-67), including a mark of 46.4 percent (13-for-28) from beyond the arc. Streaker - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones owns the longest double-fig-ure scoring streak by a Colonial on the active roster at 19 games. Jonesturned the trick in the final six contests of the 2010-11 season and the first13 games in 2011-12. The Charles L. Sewall Center

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for ThreeOver the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris havebecome synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still nearthe top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals madeper game. Since the start of the 2002-03 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.08 three-pointers per contest, which ranks second behind St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.10three-pointers a game.
