Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team concludes a two-game road swingthrough the Garden State Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. tip at the MAC against Monmouth in WestLong Branch, N.J., in a contest that will be televised live on MSG. The Colonials are coming off an88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Red-shirt junior guard Coron Williams led RMU against the Knights with a season-high 27 points,converting nine of his 12 attempts from the field, including 8-of-10 from beyond the arc, whilegoing 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Williams was one of five players to score in double figuresin the victory, as he was joined by forwards Mike McFadden (12), Stephan Hawkins (12) and Rus-sell Johnson (10) and guard Anthony Myers-Pate (10). The Colonials return home to the CharlesL. Sewall Center for three of their next four games after taking on the Hawks Saturday, beginningwith a 7:00 p.m. tip against Sacred Heart Thursday, Jan. 17.

Quick Stat of the Night - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams was in the zone in an 88-54 victory@ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13), tying a career-high with eight three-pointers en route to a sea-son-high 27 points. Williams also connected for eight three-pointers in an 87-68 victory overMonmouth (3/1/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament at theCharles L. Sewall Center. Williams is also the first player to convert at least eight field goals frombeyond the arc in a road game since former Colonial Gene Nabors (1995-2000) finished 9-for-15from deep in a 66-59 victory @ Monmouth (2/5/00), a span of 206 games. Williams enters Satur-day’s tilt against the Hawks at the MAC ranked second in the NEC in both three-point field goalpercentage (.483) and three-point field goals per game (2.63) and is 22 triples shy of becomingthe seventh player in school history with at least 200 career three-pointers.

Saturday’s Opponent and The All-Time Series -Robert Morris and Monmouth meet on the hard-wood for the 57th time Saturday, with the Hawksholding a 31-25 (.554) edge in the all-time series.RMU has won seven straight over Monmouth en-tering Saturday’s game after having swept the2011-12 season series while earning an 87-68victory in the quarterfinals of the 2012 North-east Conference Tournament at the Charles L. Sewall Center. In the last contest between the twoprograms at the MAC (1/21/12), Robert Morris climbed out of a 15-point deficit in the second halfto earn an 81-73 overtime victory. In that contest guard Velton Jones led three Colonials in doublefigures with 35 points, hitting 10 of his 20 shots from the field, including 6-of-11 from beyondthe arc, while going 9-for-14 at the free-throw line. When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of theColonials. He owns an overall record of 53-32 (.624).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82. Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials toan overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped RobertMorris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tour-nament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despitefalling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to thequarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in thefirst round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983. Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign,RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for afive-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league oppositionand have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or indi-vidual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program,from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes thathelped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Offense & Defense - Robert Morris put forth arguably its most complete game in an 88-54victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13), and thanks to the performance the Colonials ex-tended a pair of streaks. RMU enter Saturday’s game @ Monmouth having won 31 straightgames when shooting 50 percent or better from the field as well as 24 consecutive contestswhen holding their opponents to less than 60 points.

Road Warrior - Despite struggling offensively at home during RMU’s first two games of theNortheast Conference slate, no player for Robert Morris has been as locked in on the roadlately than redshirt junior guard Coron Williams. Entering Saturday’s contest @ Monmouth,Williams has averaged 18.0 points and 2.8 rebounds over RMU’s last four road tilts, con-verting 64.9 percent (24-for-37) of his shots from the field, including an unconscious 71.4percent (20-of-28) of his attempts from beyond the arc. Overall in eight road games thisseason Williams has scored at a 12.6 points per game clip while shooting 47.9 percent (34-for-71) from the floor, including 50.9 percent (28-for-55) from deep.

Surf Board - Russell Johnson opened the 2012-13 campaign dealing with an ankle injurythat limited his abilities in the early going of the season, but the redshirt senior forwardseems to be getting into a groove. Over the course of the last five games, Johnson has aver-aged 7.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest while shooting 46.7 percent (14-for-30) fromthe field and 77.8 percent (7-for-9) at the free-throw line. Johnson has grabbed at least eightrebounds four times over that span, including a season-high 10 caroms in an 88-54 victory@ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13) as part of his sixth career double-double. The program’s ac-tive leader in rebounds with 637, Johnson needs just six boards to crack the top five all-time at Robert Morris for career caroms. Johnson would need to average 7.7 rebounds overRMU’s final 15 regular-season contests to eclipse the career record of 751 that is held by for-mer Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and Tony Lee (2004-08).

Chicks Dig The Long Ball - The addition of junior guard Karvel Anderson has given RobertMorris another threat from beyond the three-point arc, and his ability to convert from deephas also helped his teammates. The Colonials enter Saturday’s game @ Monmouth havingaveraged 10.6 three-pointers per contest over the course of their last nine games. In eightof those games RMU has hit at least nine three-pointers. Coincidentally, the last nine gameshave all been with Anderson as a member of the starting lineup, the first starts of his Divi-sion I career. As a starter, Anderson is averaging 14.3 points per game and is shooting 54.1percent (46-for-85) from the field, including 50.8 percent (31-for-61) from deep.

Tag Team - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams and junior guard Karvel Anderson haveteamed up this season to give Robert Morris a lethal combination from deep. Through thefirst 16 games of the 2012-13 season, the duo have combined for 83 three-pointers, an av-erage of 5.2 per contest. Williams enters Saturday’s game @ Monmouth ranked second inthe Northeast Conference in three-pointers per game (2.63), while Anderson ranks fifth(2.56). The duo are on pace to finish the 2012-13 regular season with 161 three-pointers,which would place Anderson and Williams as the top three-point shooting tandem in schoolhistory. The current record of 150 is held by former Colonials Jeremy Chappell (2005-09)and Jimmy Langhurst (2006-10), who turned the trick in 2008-09.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and theproof is in the numbers. Jones enters Saturday’s game @ Monmouth ranked third in theNortheast Conference in assists (5.63 per game) and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.96).Just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists, Jones needs 73 dimesto eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84). He would need to average 4.9 assists per game over RMU’s final 16 regular-season con-tests to eclipse the mark.

Break Out - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials against Central Con-necticut State (1/5/12) with 22 points , hitting seven of his 16 shots from the field, including2-of-6 from long range, and going 6-for-9 at the free-throw. He also added a trio of stealsagainst the Blue Devils. For Jones, it marked the 16th time in his career he’s eclipsed 20points in a game, which ranks ninth all-time at Robert Morris. Jones needs four 20+ pointperformances to become just the eighth player in school history to score at least 20 pointsin a game 20 times.

THE GREATEST COMEBACK ...Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history ingarnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the CharlesL. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, butthe Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. Itmarks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back fromin its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (2007-09) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonialsto the win over the Penguins.

WE’RE STREAKING Robert Morris has posted seven consecutive winning seasons, thelongest streak in school history. Since the beginning of the 2005-06campaign, the Colonials own an overall record of 158-88 (.642), includ-ing a mark of 91-38 (.705) in the Northeast Conference.

Scouting the Hawks - Monmouth snapped a seven-game losing streak thanks to a 65-60 victoryover Saint Francis University (1/10/13) and enters Saturday’s game against Robert Morris sport-ing an overall record of 6-10 (.375), including a mark of 1-2 (.333) in the Northeast Conference.Against the Red Flash, senior guard Jesse Steele led the Hawks with 17 points, five reboundsand three steals, converting six of his 15 shots from the field, including a 5-for-8 performancefrom beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Andrew Nicholas added 15 points in the win over SaintFrancis U. and is Monmouth’s leading scorer, producing a points per game average of 14.3.Nicholas and Steele have combined for 63 three-pointers so far on the 2012-13 campaign, withNicholas owning a team-high 33. The leading rebounder for the Hawks is senior forward EdWaite, who pulls down an average of 5.1 caroms per contest and scores 7.2 points per game.

Monmouth Head Coach - King Rice (North Carolina ’92), a former point guard under Hall ofFame Head Coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, is in his second year as headcoach of the Hawks. Rice is the fifth head coach in the history of the Monmouth program, andhe enters Saturday’s game with an overall record of 18-30 (.375). A native of Binghamton, N.Y.,Rice spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt from 2006 to 2011 prior to his hiringwith the Hawks.

RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris snapped a three-game losing streak, Jan. 10, and picked upits first Northeast Conference victory with an 88-54 win over Fairleigh Dickinson at StratisArena. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams led five players in double figures scoring for RMUwith 27 points, converting nine of his 12 shots from the field, including an 8-for-10 performancefrom beyond the arc, and going 1-for-1 at the free-throw line. Williams scored 11 points in theopening five and-a-half minutes of action to help bolster Robert Morris to an early 17-10 leadat the 14:35 mark of the first half. The Colonials finished the game 13-for-24 (54.2 percent)from beyond the arc, and sophomore guard David Appolon gave RMU its first double-digit lead,30-20, with a trifecta with 5:41 to play before halftime. Appolon's three-pointer helped ignitea 19-5 run to close out the first half that gave Robert Morris a 44-25 advantage at the break.During the spurt, junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate and redshirt senior forward Russell John-son also connected from long range. Williams helped the Colonials extend their lead to 61-29in the first six minutes of the second half with a trio of three-pointers as part of a 17-4 spurtafter intermission. The Knights, however, would score the next 10 points of the contest to closeto within 61-39 as Melquan Bolding scored five points, while Dylan Moody connected from be-yond the arc. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones helped stem the tide with a layup, and RobertMorris took its biggest lead, 86-49, with just 1:24 to go after layup from Myers-Pate. JoiningWilliams in double figures scoring for RMU were junior forward Mike McFadden, freshmanforward Stephan Hawkins, Johnson and Myers-Pate. McFadden scored 12 points and grabbedsix rebounds, while Hawkins scored a career-high 12 points and also posted five boards. John-son registered his first double-double of the 2012-13 campaign with 10 points and a game-high10 caroms, while Myers-Pate finished with 10 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.

Johnson is now just 43 points shy of joining the RobertMorris 1,000-point club and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player in schoolhistory to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs. Redshirtjunior guard Coron Williams, meanwhile, is 197 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting tothe free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victoryover Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jonespaced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at thecharity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (474) and free-throwattempts (655), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe atleast 10 times in a game. Jones enters Saturday’s game @ Monmouth leading the Colo-nials in both free throws (77) and free-throw attempts (95), a success rate of 81.1 percentthat ranks sixth in the Northeast Conference.

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting as-signments. Williams has started 58 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season,the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 con-secutive games before having it snapped last season.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressiveshooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Cen-ter, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyondthe arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shootingnight from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 winover Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second stu-dent-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc withouta miss. Former Colonial Scott Shepherd (1988-91) also finished 8-for-8 from deep in a110-80 win over LIU Brooklyn Feb. 8, 1990, at the Sewall Center. The Charles L. Sewall Center

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for ThreeOver the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris havebecome synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the topof the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game.Since the start of the 2002-03 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.14 three-pointersper contest, ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn for the most in the NEC. In 2011-12, redshirt soph-omore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the secondhighest total in the RMU single-season record book.
