Halsey, Neb. – If anyone’s worried about the next genera-tion sitting in front of a computer screen too much, they needto meet Chauncey Hesseltine.

Chauncey, a senior from Thedford High School, loves to beon the go and can’t stand to sit around.

That is most apparent at high school rodeos, whereChauncey competes in four events: team roping, steerwrestling, saddle bronc riding, and bull riding.

The Halsey, Neb. resident is a member of the NebraskaState High School Rodeo Association, and grew up ropingwith his dad as he worked on area ranches.

He began competing as a roper in junior and junior highrodeos and soon added the saddle bronc riding and bull rid-ing. He was the state champion bull rider in 8th grade andreserve champion breakaway roper the same year.

Chauncey tried riding barebacks last year, but quit becausehe didn’t like the event. “I didn’t like the beating it took onmy body. Saddle broncs and bull riding doesn’t hurt as bad.”

He was on the honor roll all four years of high school and amember of the FCLA for three years. He played basketball asa freshman and sophomore before deciding to quit to devotemore time to rodeo practice.

Just a month ago, he decided to add steer wrestling to hisrepertoire. “I took up the steer wrestling for the fun of it, tosay I’ve done every event in rodeo,” Chauncey said. He hadcompeted in tie-down roping in junior high.

His competition in four rodeo events puts him in the run-ning for the all-around title, the most desirable award inrodeo given to the athlete who wins the most in two or moreevents. Chauncey is in second place behind Jay Simonson, and close enough that with nine more high school rodeos thisseason, he could overtake him.

Chauncey has competed at the state high school finalsrodeo in Hastings the last two years, qualifying for theNational High School Finals Rodeo both years. In 2011, hewent in the bull riding, and in 2010, he qualified in the sad-dle bronc riding.

His rodeo talents have garnered him a full ride scholarshipto Vernon (Texas) Community College, where he’ll competeon the rodeo team. He’s thinking about a degree in criminaljustice.

And if he’s not rodeoing, he’s doing something outdoors. “Idon’t like to sit in the house and watch TV. It gets boring andmakes me grumpy.”

Chauncey has four younger siblings who all compete inrodeo. They are the children of Harald and Julie Hesseltine.

North Platte, Neb. – Lynn Meyer is a collector of beautifulold horse drawn vehicles.

And every June, he gets to put one of them to work, carry-ing dignitaries at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte.

Meyer, Maxwell, Neb., has been driving a fifth wheel hitchwagon, pulled by a team of four horses, into the Wild WestArena in North Platte for at least the last twenty years, heestimates.

His freight? The sailors from the USS Nebraska, stationedat Bangor, Wash., who are guests of NEBRASKALand Days.

The Meyer family, beginning with Lynn’s dad, Cliff, hasbeen in the draft horse business since 1961. Lynn’s dad, andthen Lynn, fed hay in the winter and stacked it in the sum-mer with six head of horses. The Meyers have shown drafthorses since the early 1960’s, and also compete in farm draftshows across the nation.

Meyer has collected a variety of horse drawn vehicles overthe years. His collection includes a chuckwagon, a one-horsedriving cart, and a farm wagon. The Buffalo Bill Rodeo isn’tthe only place where he drives a team of horses. He often par-ticipates in the NEBRASKALand Days parade, and drives theCozad Chamber of Commerce Yellowstone Touring Coach forparades in Sutherland and Maxwell and for the opening of thedress horse classes at the Nebraska State Fair. For the last fif-teen years, he’s driven the farm wagon for the Nebraska StateCorn Picking Contest.

The fifth wheel hitch wagon that Meyer uses to carry theUSS Nebraska sailors is about 100 years old. He found it nearBridgeport, Neb. with original hardware, rebuilt the wheelsand put on a new wooden box and chrome rails.

Meyer drives the wagon in the arena during the Friday andSaturday nights of rodeo and loves hauling the sailors. “It’s

quite an honor for us to haul them,” he said. “I’ve always feltreal privileged to get the job of hauling them.” Meyer said theNorth Platte people love recognizing the sailors. “This area isespecially patriotic. North Platte takes good care of them, andthe crowd sure seems to enjoy seeing the sailors.”

In addition to his hobby of raising and showing draft hors-es, the Meyers ranch. The Meyer Triangle L Ranch is in thethird generation of the family, and horses run in the family.Lynn and his wife Linda have five grandkids, and “they wereall horseback from the minute they were big enough to strad-dle a saddle horse.” Meyer’s son partners on the ranch. Adaughter and her husband live on the ranch, and a seconddaughter lives in Arizona.

Meyer is proud of being a recipient of the Dale Studleyaward, given annually to a NEBRASKALand Days volunteerwho gives selflessly of his time and talent. He received theaward in 2006. “I felt quite honored,” he said. “It made thefront page of the paper. A small town boy, from Maxwell, get-ting in the local paper. That’s good.”

Meyer and his fifth wheel hitch wagon will be at the BuffaloBill Rodeo June 13-16 at NEBRASKALand Days.

Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2012

My name is Sierra Peterson, and Iam the daughter of Mark and KatePeterson of Ashland, NE. I had thehonor and privilege of being crownedMiss Rodeo Nebraska 2012 during theMRN Association Inc. pageant in Juneat the Buffalo Bill Rodeo held in con-junction with the NEBRASKAlandDays celebration in North Platte.

Growing up on the eastern side ofthe state, my rodeo background does-n't always fit the mold. But, my lovefor horses and the sport drove me topursue a position where I can be anambassador for both future and cur-rent rodeo fans. My family plays alarge part in my success. They are allinvolved in rodeo and continue toshow me every day how to influenceand mentor others with the sport welove.

I hold a degree in public relationsfrom Oklahoma Christian University. In college, I was heavily involved inintramurals, campus clubs, and a

mentoring program. I plan to furthermy education and pursue a careerworking for one of the sponsors ofrodeo once my reign is completed.

Over the next year I will representthe state of Nebraska, the sport ofrodeo, and the western way of life.Along with these things, I will alsoserve as an ambassador for theTeammates Mentoring program andthe Miss Rodeo Nebraska Association,Inc.

The motto, I want to carry not onlyfor my year as MRN, but also throughthe rest of my life is “Enjoy the Ride.”My 4-H leader gave me this adviceright before I competed in the MRNAssociation Inc. pageant. It remindedme that each moment is a blessing weonly get once, so take every opportuni-ty to make memories and enjoy yourtime. Always remember life happensin the blink of an eye, so all you can dois “Enjoy the Ride.” Sierra Peterson

Phillipsburg, KS – Rodeo champions rarely show up at arodeo to volunteer.

But that’s exactly what has happened in Phillipsburg. The1978 steer wrestling champion of Kansas' Biggest Rodeo nowgives of his time as a volunteer at the same rodeo.

John Boyington was in college when he won the steerwrestling over 30 years ago, and he was about to start veteri-narian school. He had been competing in the Pro RodeoCowboys Association, and he knew that summer was “my lasthurrah,” as he put it. So he went to a lot of rodeos, steerwrestling in Denver, Houston, Ft. Worth, Cheyenne, Tucson,Calgary, and Phillipsburg, winning enough money to qualifyfor the Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo that fall.

The Phillipsburg resident grew up in Goodland with par-ents who support his and his siblings’ rodeo activities. Afterbeing accepted into Kansas State University’s vet school inthe spring of 1978, he continued his pro rodeo career, knowingthat once vet school began, everything outside of school wouldbe curtailed. The Prairie Circuit Finals in Wichita was thelast professional rodeo in which he competed. In 1978, “Istopped rodeoing at that point. I was at the peak of my (rodeo)career, but had to make a decision between rodeo or vetschool.” His focused shifted because “they weren’t going toflunk me out of vet school. It was too difficult to get in.”

After graduation in 1982, Dr. Boyington practiced inMissouri, Texas and Ulysses, Kansas, before opening his ownpractice, Crossroads Vet Clinic, in Phillipsburg in 1990.

He served on the Kansas' Biggest Rodeo board for about 14years, and for the last seven years has coordinated the rodeo’sticket sales, ordering tickets and organizing help for the tick-et office. He has also volunteered his professional expertise asthe official rodeo veterinarian for the last 21 years, being onsite for every performance of the rodeo.

Being an equine vet anda former contestant, he hasa unique perspective of prorodeo. “You realize howimportant (horses) are tothese rodeo contestants. Alot of people don’t realizewhat goes into making arodeo horse. Their horse istheir livelihood.”

His championship win atthe Phillipsburg rodeocame about a month afterhe got married. For himand his new bride, Donna, the stop in Phillipsburg, along with other rodeos, was “a rodeo honeymoon.”An avid rodeo competitor herself, Donna was the

perfect traveling partner. “It was good times back then.”Rodeo “was really in my blood,” Boyington said. “Just like a

lot of different sports, you get obsessed with them. I thought Ihad the talent to go on and maybe make it to the NationalFinals Rodeo.”

John and Donna have two children: a son who is a studentat Kansas State, and a daughter in high school. Both partici-pated in equine activities and enjoy horses.

Boyington is still surprised to think that he has a practicein the same community where he won a gold buckle. He’s wonmore than a championship in Phillipsburg, but also a home.“It’s a wonderful community. Being in a small town, you knoweveryone. It’s a great place to live and raise a family.”
