The Business Management Department at Morrison’s Academy The Business Management Department is an exciting place to work and has a long history of academic success at Intermediate, Higher and Advanced Higher levels whilst at the same time preparing young people for university education and careers in business thereafter. Numbers who choose to study business management at senior levels are large and that is down to the quality of teaching, the reputation of the department and the support provided to the young people.

There are two full-time teaching staff supported by a reprographics technician. The department aims to nurture a fascination for the world of business in the senior year groups and many go on to study business-related subjects at university before entering the world of finance and commerce thereafter. Preparation for examination success is at the core of what we do whilst also we aim to foster an appreciation of the importance of business to the economic health of the nation as a whole. We employ a broad range of teaching approaches geared towards engaging and enthusing all our young people. We work hard to support them in their learning through expert teaching, a programme of supported study sessions and by running a number of educational visits. These include field trips to local business, some further afield and occasionally overseas. Based on the ground-floor of the original ‘Old School Building’ we have three spacious teaching rooms, one of which has 21 computer workstations within it as well as a SmartBoard. The department as a whole is very well resourced. Unlike other subjects business management is only taught at S3 and above but every year it attracts large numbers who choose to study the subject for the first time. The Young Enterprise scheme, which is offered in S6 is always well supported and in any one year there are often two YE companies competing for business. Christmas gifts, hoodies, fashion and talent shows, and CDs are amongst some of the more popular products sold by the Young Enterprise companies and at the end of the year a number of prizes are awarded to those young people who have made a special contribution, demonstrated the significant business acumen or exhibited obvious leadership qualities in their respective companies.

We have enjoyed considerable examination success at all levels and clearly this is something we are looking to maintain over the coming years. Whilst raw results are not the full measure of a department the fact is that in the increasingly competitive business of university entrance our young people need good grades.

The School Morrison’s Academy manages to combine being a friendly, family-orientated school with high levels of achievement and success. We are an ambitious and thriving school of over 520 young people between the ages of 3 and 18 and 100 or so full and part-time staff where everybody is expected to give of their best and to contribute to the life of the community. The scale of the school means that we are all known to and support one another. Opportunities to participate at intra and inter school level are open to all and every member of the community is encouraged to participate and achieve in those areas that interest them.

We have just built a wonderful new nursery on the main school campus in the middle of Crieff and are currently seeking planning permission to relocate the bulk of the school’s sports facilities to our 45 acres of playing fields which are a ten-minute walk away. Thereafter we are planning to reconstruct a number of the buildings on the main campus while maintaining the magnificent original buildings erected when the school was founded in 1860. This comprehensive strategic redevelopment of the whole school has been endorsed by the governing body and is symptomatic of the school’s modern and progressive outlook.

We place a good deal of emphasis on improving our own expertise and look to each other to deliver training as well as using outside providers. There is a wealth of skill and experience amongst the staff and they are happy to share this with their colleagues both through formal training and on an individual basis. When you want to develop your professional skills further you will find the school ready to support you. What is Morrison’s Academy looking for in you? A very good degree in a business management or economics discipline and a post-graduate teaching qualification are taken as read, as is membership of or eligibility for GTCS. Above all we want to employ someone who cares deeply about educating young people and wishes to instil a love of learning. We recognize that intelligence, like its bearers, comes in many shapes and sizes and it is our duty to hone that intelligence through skilled teaching and not to see it as a fixed commodity. As a member of staff you will be expected to take an interest in the pastoral welfare of all pupils but most particularly the form class or tutor group to which you will be assigned. And then there is your contribution to the co-curricular programme. This is a vital element in what Morrison’s provides to its young people and levels of participation are very high. Teaching at Morrison’s is a vocation, it is not for the faint-hearted or those who wish to leave the school at last bell. We see education as a broad experience and many of the activities that take place after formal teaching finishes are every bit as important in the development of our young people as those which take place during the timetabled hours. Why might I want to teach at Morrison’s Academy? Let me try and answer this question succinctly. Our young people are a delight to teach, the staff and governors are helpful and supportive, Crieff is in a beautiful part of the country in which to live and, thanks to a good road network, is within easy reach of the central belt, and there is a very strong sense of community all around you. We have high expectations of each other and the confidence to allow innovation. Morrison’s is a friendly, progressive and engaging community and a most satisfying place in which to work.
