Second Sunday of Lent 2 March 17, 2019

From Our Pastor Dear Parishioners, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! A day in which everyone is Irish. Believe it or not I am 25% Irish on my mom’s side. It is also the Second Sunday of Lent. On the second Sunday of Lent, we move from Jesus' retreat to the desert and temptation by the devil to the glory shown in Jesus' Transfiguration. On the first Sunday of Lent, our Gospel always tells the story of Jesus' temptation in the desert. On the second Sunday, we always hear the story of Jesus' Transfiguration. In the Transfiguration we encounter the three disciples experiencing and seeing Jesus in both his Humanity and his Divinity. For us today, there are those “God moments” when we recognize God working in our lives in all His Glory. We recognize his power, majesty and Love of God.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who responded to our recent call for more people to assist at our Masses. In late January members of our Parish Council invited us to consider serving as Greeters, Ushers, Altar Servers, Lectors, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at our weekend Masses. A good number of you stepped up and have been recently trained. As I have shared, the Mass, the Eucharist is the most important thing we do here at the parish and everything should flow and to and from it. In order for us to do it well it is good for us to have much help as possible. I appreciate all who are current ministers and those who recently got trained.

Wednesday, March 20, 2019 our parish and all of the parishes in the Diocese will offer “An Evening of Confession” from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Parishioners are asked to evangelize by inviting family or friends who are away from the Church to join in this special Lenten practice. Priests at all parishes will be present for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As Pope Francis says, “The joy of God is the joy of forgiveness.” More information is available at www.welcomecaholics.com.

We will also being having Taize prayer on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. This will be an evening of prayer around the cross, utilizing music composed by the Taizé Community, an Ecumenical Christian Monastic community in Taizé, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy, France. We will celebrate a Taizé service of sung and chanted prayers, meditation, periods of silence, and liturgical readings. There is no preaching. The relaxing and contemplative style of this worship allows each person to meditate and reflect on the mystery of God, while the holy cross is displayed in the sanctuary. Please join us for this special evening of friendship and prayer: what a delightful way to pray Jesus!

Make it a great week. See you in Church. Peace……………………………………………………………………………………………………..……………………………………………. Fr. John

Parish News & Events Taizé Service Prayer Around the Cross Wed., March 20 at 7:00 pm in the Church Lenten Taizé (pronounced Tay-ZAY) will be an evening of prayer around the cross, utilizing music composed by the Taizé Community, an Ecumenical Christian Monastic community in Taizé, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy, France. Taizé music emphasizes simple phrases, usually lines from Psalms or other Scripture passages. It is very easy to pray or sing along with because it is repetitive and sometimes also sung in canon. Please join us for this special evening of friendship and prayer.

Linked-In-Prayer Some of our parishioners are unable to take an active part in the various parish Masses and activities. Linked-In-Prayer will be comprised of the sick, handicapped, home-bound, those who live in as-sisted living environments and our elderly. From the comforts of where they live, they can be connected to the parish through prayer. A monthly letter will be sent to partici-pants highlighting specific needs and prayer intentions of the parish. If a member of your family or someone else you know desires to be recon-nected to the parish, they could possibly benefit from being “linked-in” to the parish through prayer. Please call the parish office at 216-289-0770.

Bereavement Support Luke Brown of SJOC will be putting on a bereavement support group beginning on Tuesday, March 19. This will be a six week group that will go from 6:30-8:00 PM. If you are struggling with any sort of loss, grief, or persisting sadness, please consider attending the group.

"For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal." Jeremiah 30:17

Our next SoulCore session will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 9:30 AM in Room 10 of the Community Center. Karen

Hostoffer will lead us through an hour of SoulCore, a prayer experience that combines the prayers of the rosary with core strengthening, stretching and functional movement. This exercise movement is NOT yoga and has no roots in Eastern spirituality. SoulCore was developed to be fully Catholic in spirituality. There is no cost, but a suggested donation of $10, for those who are able. For more information contact Anney Roach at [email protected].

Stations of the Cross Every Friday after 8:00 am Mass. We are invited to walk with Christ, and what more fitting path could there be than the pathway of the cross? During this Lenten season you are encouraged to make a spiritual pilgrimage and walk the “Via Delorosa” – the Way of the Cross. Please pick up a copy of the Stations of the Cross booklet: Praying the Stations with Pope Francis. Consider praying a “station” each day in Lent. Let us set out on this spiritual journey pausing at each station to meditate on the self-giving love of Christ that can become our own lifestyle of love.

Evening of Confession Wed., March 20; 5-8pm (Sacred Heart Chapel)

Parish News & Events

Our Parish Mission We are the Catholic Community of St. John of the Cross, established in 2009. Uniting the people of God as one family, we are rooted in, and empowered by, our sacramental life and Eucharistic celebrations. Living as disciples of Jesus Christ, we recognize our God given potential and challenge one another to share our giftedness, embrace our diversity, and engage in social outreach, service and education. In doing so, we seek to extend the reign of God in Euclid and the wider community.

Last week, we discussed sacrifice and one of the reasons it’s important to our mental health. This week, I would like to discuss the second reason I find sacrifice so important- how we replace what we have sacrificed. Every Lent, I try to give up something I enjoy that takes up a chunk of my time, like a TV

show. If I fill that 30 minutes of free time by playing a game on my phone or browsing Facebook, have I really sacrificed anything? The point of sacrificing is to make us holier people more focused on God! Sacrificing an hour of Netflix for an hour of Sudoku is hardly what Christ had in mind when he preached about sacrifice. When we sacrifice something, it’s important to fill that part of our lives with something directed toward God. If you decide you want to give up your daily hour of Netflix, consider filling that time by reading and reflecting upon Scripture. If you sacrifice something like your daily afternoon bottle of pop, maybe say a Rosary. If you are giving up eating out at restaurants, consider spending that time serving food at a local homeless shelter. If we practice sacrifice in this way, it becomes a joy-filled endeavor rather than an obnoxious chore where we find ourselves eagerly awaiting Easter more for the return of our morning coffee than the beautiful Paschal Mystery. This aspect of sacrifice helps us look outside of ourselves and engage more with the people around us and with God himself, which is always good for our mental health. With prayers……..……………………………………………………………….Luke Brown
