This week‘s opposition Bournemouth FC will be hoping to push on from a 5th place finish last year and this season are genuine title contenders with Poole Town finally win-ning promotion.

The club was founded on 11 September 1875, and is one of the oldest clubs in the country being founder Members of the Football Association, the

Hampshire F.A. and the Bournemouth F.A. The club was among founder members of the Hampshire League and up to joining the Wessex League in

1986 had played entirely in the Hampshire League, except for a short spell at the turn of the 20th century.

The club played the second game in the inaugural Hampshire League campaign of 1896/97, going down 1-0 to Ryde Sports on 12 September 1896,

finishing sixth from eight.

The club has had three homes during its history with their first ground being at a place called East Common near the Bournemouth railway station

and Dean Park (current home of Dorset County Cricket) before moving to Victoria Park, which was formerly a farmer‘s field.

The first taste of County success came in winning the West Division in 1905 and then again in 1910. Poppies became County Division Champions

either side of the Great War in 1914 and 1922. However in 1929 the club was relegated into the newly formed Division 2 regaining top flight status by

winning the Division 2 Championship in 1932. The club languished in the bottom half of Division 1 for several seasons before finally falling back into

Division 2 when football restarted after the Second World War. The club recovered some of its past glories by winning the Hampshire Intermediate

Cup in 1950 and again in 1970 and 1972.

Division 1 status was regained for the 1979/80 season but relegation quickly followed in 1980/81 and again in 1982/83 when they slipped into Division

3 remaining there until being admitted to the newly formed Wessex League in 1985.

The Wessex League Championship has remained elusive coming close on two occasions with a 3rd place in 1990/91 under the guidance of Tommy

Taylor and runners up spot in 1994/5 to Fleet Town when Alex Pike was the manager. After a season of stabilising the foundations in 2009/10, the players and the Management team of KEN VAUGHAN, KEITH WEST, CALLUM KERRINS

and STUART UNDERWOOD added a number of new signings to the squad and secured a top five finish and picked up some silverware in the 25th Wessex League season in the shape of the League Cup, winning 1-0 at AFC Totton‘s new ground against Winchester City, with the goal coming from Hodgson. This season we again hope to be amongst the clubs pressing for honours.

Tuesday 26 November 1878 is another significant date in the club‘s history- when the club played under experimental electric lights at Dean Park for

―a grand exhibition of the new electric light‖; conditions weren‘t perfect though with part of a cinder cycle track cutting the field of play. The club has

also changed names; Bournemouth Rovers, Bournemouth Wanderers and now Bournemouth Poppies. Additionally the club has also had a change of

colour several times, adopting the colour poppy red in season 1895/6 from green and white hoops (following the merger with Bournemouth Wander-

ers), since then being known as the Poppies. 2011/12 sees us adopting a new away kit of yellow and blue halved shirts to compliment our traditional

red kit.

One of the clubs most famous members was William Pickford (who later became Chairman of the English Football Association). Mr. J Joy, a local

landowner and supporter of the club, gave the present Namu Road ground to the club. Victoria Park is squeezed in amongst surrounding houses and

remains much as it was when the club first moved here in 1923. Bournemouth Council bought the ground after the Second World War for £4,500 pro-

viding a lease on a peppercorn rent.

The clubhouse was opened in 1985 and the current 205-seater stand provides adequate cover from the elements with several rows of bench seating

replacing the old wooden stand that was destroyed by fire. This stretches about a third of the length of the pitch – next to the glass-fronted club-

house. The remaining three sides are flat terracing just separated from the playing area by a permanent metal barrier.

Romsey Town: A brief history The history of Romsey Town Football Club goes back to 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town.

In the season 1889/90 they played their football at Alma Road, playing in local football. By the 1920‘s they had gained entry into the Hampshire League and played their games at Priestlands which is now Romsey School. They had great success and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the first time.

After the Second World War Romsey Town went on to produce some of their best attacking sides. In 1949 they reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup in the same season. By 1955-56 they moved to their current home – the Bypass Ground – however they were relegated and the club fell into decline.

By the 1970‘s the club started to climb out of the doldrums of lower league football and in 1974-75 won the Hampshire League Division 4 title. By the late 80‘s Romsey had reached the Hampshire League Division 1 and in 1990 became the second club (after Bashley) to win the Wessex League title.

In the years to follow the club could not maintain the high standards and went into another decline until re-cently. In 2007 the club finished 3rd in Division 1 of the Wessex League and gained promotion to the Premier Division. After a good start to the 2007-08 campaign, the side suffered a poor second half of the season and finished 18th. The reserves finished 4th in Combination 2 and were beaten finalists in the Southampton Sen-ior Cup Final at St Mary‘s.

Welcome back to the By-Pass ground for the start of the new season. This close season has been a little bit more relaxed than last

year when we were building a new team from scratch but we have still had some scary mo-

ments with regard to the players. We have had a few of the players pulling the shirt on tonight who have been offered a lot of money to move to other clubs in the Wes-sex league but have decided to stay with for another season and we would like to thank

them for their loyalty. Tonight we welcome the supporters, officials

players and staff from Bournemouth the game and thank them for agreeing to the Fri-

day night fixture which we hope will be the first of a few. Hope you enjoy the game and

thank you for your support, it is much appre-ciated by everyone at the club.

1. How much did you enjoy your first season at the Bypass Ground? Great season! It was my first full season in the Wessex League and it was great to be part of what we did against the odds. 2. Was it hard for Wayne to persuade you to join the side or did you know instantly you wanted to join? As soon as he asked, I jumped at the chance! I played under him at Winchester Youth and at Eastleigh so I knew all about how he ran things and didn‘t think twice about it! 3. Were you surprised by how much the side improved throughout the season and by the final position in the league? No not really, I could see the class of the players that we were bringing in. They were always going to improve us! 4. You started more games than anyone else last season with Town and you scored three league goals. Will you be looking to improve on that tally of goals this season? And all three of them were in the first ten games of the sea-son! Yes of course I‘d love to improve on that but as long as we are winning, I couldn‘t care who gets the goals. 6. Looking towards this season, is the team prepared for the new season? Yeah very optimistic, we are in a far better position going into this season. We are fitter, stronger and have more qual-ity in depth. Had a great pre season with some good per-formances, so I really hope we can kick on this season. Got a great group of lads and the banter is brilliant which always helps with performances and in the dressing room. 7. Now looking forward to Friday‘s game, do you think you can win against Bournemouth? Don‘t see why we can‘t! We beat them last year at our place and I feel we are better this year than last. But its going to be a tough game as they finished in the top 3 (actually 5th) last season and they are going to be strong again. It‘s a tough start to the season but we will be ready for it! 8. And finally I know you are a die hard Man City fan so what do you think the season ahead will be like for City? Well who knows! Love to say win the League and cup again and a decent run in Europe but this is City! Typical City like to make things hard - part of the fun supporting them! So I‘m just going to enjoy what comes, it makes a change to I‘m used to watching as a City fan anyway.
