Proud to Sponsor Romsey Town

Romsey Town were looking for revenge as they took on the side that had already knocked them out of the FA Vase this season—Fawley AFC. On a cold and foggy Tuesday night the sides lined up with only a point separating them in the league. The game started rather uneventful until Romsey won a corner. Jake Long floated the corner across and after a scramble including the ball being hacked off the line, it eventually found its way to Macs Sampays who drilled in the rebound. Romsey know were on the front foot and Fawley just could not get on the ball and soon Romsey doubled their lead with a spectacular strike. After some scrappy play on the halfway line the ball finally bounced through to Simon De‘ath who fresh from a hat-trick at the weekend unleashed a ferocious strike from around 30 yards which dipped perfectly over the stranded Fawley goalkeeper to put Romsey 2-0 up and was De‘ath‘s 15th goal of the season. The game continued in a similar fashion until the end of the half with Romsey well on top but unable to extend their lead. At half time it was Romsey 2-0 Fawley. The second half started like the first with neither side really dominating possession until Fawley won themselves a corner. The ball was whipped into the near post and expertly flicked into the near corner of the goal to give Fawley an unexpected lifeline. This goal gave Fawley the hope that they needed who applied continuous pressure to the Romsey defence and eventually they equalised. A sliced clearance in the Romsey defence allowed Fawley to break and have a shot from around 20 yards out. The shot skidded off the slick Bypass turf and Romsey ‗keeper Matthew Brown could only parry for a Fawley striker to pounce on the rebound to make the game 2-2. Fawley were now all over Romsey who were struggling to get a foothold on the game and continued to bombard the Romsey goal with shots. An attack on the left wing from Fawley managed to give them the lead when Romsey defender Richard Hayter was adjudged to have brought down the Fawley striker in the box. The referee pointed to the spot and the penalty was converted by Sam Wiltshire to give Fawley the lead for the first time. Things didn‘t get much better for Romsey as with only minutes to go centre back Ja-mie Thoroughgood was sent off for a second bookable offence. The game looked like it would end in Romsey‘s first defeat in 5 matches until deep into stoppage time Ben White broke into the opposition‘s box and was hauled down by a Fawley defender. The referee again pointed to the spot and this time Ryan Long smashed home the penalty to get a draw for Romsey and continue their unbeaten run to 6. Full time score: Romsey Town 3-3 Fawley.

Romsey Town 3-3 Fawley 25/10/11 By Cameron Melling

There has been organised football in Fareham since the 1880‘s, but the Fareham Town Football club under its cur-rent constitution was formed in 1947 following an amalgamation of Fareham FC, Fareham Brotherhood FC (Sometimes called Fareham Casuals FC) and Fareham Youth Centre (seniors) FC. The suggestion of a merger to form one town team was first discussed at a public meeting held 3 May 1946 and it was agreed to put it into effect the following season. The new club Fareham Town FC initially played at Beaconsfield Meadow (now housing opposite the working mens club in Mill Road) before moving to Bath Lane and entered the Portsmouth League before being admit-

ted into the 3rd division of the Hampshire County League. By the end of the 1952/53 season, it had gained promotion to the FirstDivision of the Hampshire League. During this period other grounds home matches were played on in-clude Park Lane and Wicor Rec. During our stay in the Hampshire League, Fareham won every honour within the County. The League on eight occasions including a period of 5 consecutive seasons from 1962/63 to 1967/68, The Hampshire Senior Cup three times and all other Senior County competitions at least once. The Club also ran a Sunday side – Fareham Centi-pedes, which won the FA Sunday Cup in 1974.Fareham moved to our Current Cams Alders home in 1975 whilst re-maining in the Hampshire League until 1979 when an application to join the expanding Southern League was successful. Ini-tially playing in the Southern Division, the Club gained promotion to the Premier Division when the League was re-organised in 1982 and stayed there for 7 seasons until relegated to the Southern Division in 1989 albeit with a record number of 51 points. In 1998, with the cost of running a Southern League increasing every year the then Board of Di-rectors lead by Chairman Chris Solen made the controversial decision that if football was to survive in Fareham, then the Club would have to compete at a lower level and in 1998-99 the Club joined the Wessex League and entered the FA Vase for the first time where we have remained ever since. In National Cup competitions the Club has reached the First Round Proper of the F.A.Cup on four occasions; the closest the Club came to progressing beyond that was in 1988- 89 when drawing 2-2 at Torquay United after surrendering a two goal lead with only five minutes to go; the replay ended in a narrow 2-3 defeat. The Clubs most successful run in the F.A. Trophy came in 1986-87 when they shocked the Non-League Football World by reaching the Semi-finals before losing 0-2 on aggregate to the eventual winners Kidder-minster Harriers. During the run to the semis the Club played 10 games and beat Vauxhall Conference sides Scar-borough and Barnet on their own grounds. At the end of the season Scarborough were promoted to the Football League as ConferenceChampions and Barnet were Runners-up. The Club also shook Hampshire football in 1993 by inflicting a 4-1 defeat on odds-on favourites Farnborough Town in the Hampshire Senior Cup Final. This is our last major honour. Under current manager Matt Parr the club have taken the deliberate decision to concentrate on set-ting up a youth section to become a far more community orientated club than we have been in the past. To show this is working already, some of last seasons Under 16 squad have already made their first team debut with several more expected to feature in 2011-12. It is hoped that going down this route, ―The Creeksiders‖ will once more become a major force in Hampshire non-league football.

Today‘s opposition comes in the form of Fareham Town. The Creeksiders currently lie in 10th position having drawn 7 games so far this season. Both games between the sides resulted in draws. Last year‘s results: 1-1 & 2-2.

Romsey Town: A brief history The history of Romsey Town Football Club goes back to 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town.

In the season 1889/90 they played their football at Alma Road, playing in local football. By the 1920‘s they had gained entry into the Hampshire League and played their games at Priestlands which is now Romsey School. They had great success and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the first time.

After the Second World War Romsey Town went on to produce some of their best attacking sides. In 1949 they reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup in the same season. By 1955-56 they moved to their current home – the Bypass Ground – however they were relegated and the club fell into decline.

By the 1970‘s the club started to climb out of the doldrums of lower league football and in 1974-75 won the Hampshire League Division 4 title. By the late 80‘s Romsey had reached the Hampshire League Division 1 and in 1990 became the second club (after Bashley) to win the Wessex League title.

In the years to follow the club could not maintain the high standards and went into another decline until re-cently. In 2007 the club finished 3rd in Division 1 of the Wessex League and gained promotion to the Premier Division. After a good start to the 2007-08 campaign, the side suffered a poor second half of the season and finished 18th. The reserves finished 4th in Combination 2 and were beaten finalists in the Southampton Sen-ior Cup Final at St Mary‘s.

Tuesday Review (25/10/11)

In the Premier Division on Tuesday night, BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES produced a dramatic late come back to win 2-1

away at NEW MILTON TOWN. The hosts started brightly and went ahead after just five minutes when Nathan Bailey's

deflected effort nestled into Max Frampton's goal. New Milton maintained good possession and had an opportunity to

extend their lead further when Tom Donaldson picked up the ball, took on several Poppies defenders and had his 20-

yard effort tipped round the post. Poppies began to come back into the game in the Second half but not before Alex

Baldacchino had a shot pushed over the crossbar. Jon Blake, Jake Rowley and Fawzi Saadi all came close for the visi-

tors before Baldacchino again had an effort for the hosts. With five minutes remaining, Jake Rowley won Poppies a

corner which was flicked goalbound and an unmarked Kayne Daish headed home to make it 1-1. In the dying stages of

the match, the ball broke free in the box and Dave Ewen smashed the ball in, much to the delight of the visiting sup-

porters. DOWNTON won 2-1 at home to ALTON TOWN. McGregor and Lewis put the Robins into a two-goal lead and

although Knight pulled a goal back for Alton, it wasn't enough for them to avoid defeat. Elsewhere, ROMSEY TOWN

drew 3-3 at home to FAWLEY AFC.

In the League Cup on Tuesday night, LYMINGTON TOWN won 2-1 at home to BRADING TOWN.

In the Russell Cotes Cup on Tuesday night, BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY won 3-0 at home to local rivals, TOTTON & EL-

ING. CHRISTCHURCH's game with Cove was called off the visitors were unable to raise a side. HYTHE & DIBDEN lost

3-1 at home to Liphook United. LAVERSTOCK & FORD won 2-1 at HORNDEAN against their Premier Division counter-

parts. FAREHAM TOWN eventually ran out 3-2 against Winchester Castle after extra-time, the score was 1-1 at full-

time.

Saturday Premier Division Review (22/10/11)

In the Premier Division on Saturday, HAMWORTHY UNITED ran out comfortable 4-0 winners at home to LAVERSTOCK

& FORD. Luke Burbidge hit a brace, including one from the penalty spot, whilst Lanahan and Diane Bassiriki also

found the net for the Hammers. Billy Huntley was sent off after just six minutes as HORNDEAN lost 1-0 at home to GE

HAMBLE. Lewis Fennemore got the only goal of the game for the Planemakers. New signing Lee Chudy and John Mul-

hern were both on target as LYMINGTON TOWN won 2-1 at home to NEWPORT (IOW). Evans scored for MONEY-

FIELDS, but it wasn't enough as goals from Graham Mankin and Joe Sanger gave BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS a

2-1 win and all three points. Callum Tanner was on target as was Tom Donaldson against his old club, but it wasn't

enough for NEW MILTON TOWN as they lost 3-2 at home to ROMSEY TOWN, with the visitors scoring two penalties.

TOTTON & ELING drew 1-1 at home to HAYLING UNITED.

Saturday FA Vase Review (22/10/11)

Sam Wiltshire and Daniel Mockeridge were both on target to give FAWLEY AFC a 2-1 away win at Shrewton

United. Late goals by Jon Blake and Hogan gave BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES a 2-0 home win against Hartley Wintney.

Sam Charles had put Bridport ahead but a second-half Ben Osborne brace gave CHRISTCHURCH a 2-1 home win.

Turpin, Holmes and Halski were all on target as DOWNTON won 3-0 at home to FAREHAM TOWN. COWES SPORTS

recorded an impressive 3-0 home win against Gillingham Town. The home side were victorios thanks to goals from

Craig Insley with two, and Darren Williams. BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY left it late but eventually ran out 2-1 winners at

home to BROCKENHURST. ALTON TOWN won 5-4 away to BRADING TOWN after extra time. Humble scored two pen-

alties for Alton and there were also goals for Walsh, Hammond and Brown. WINCHESTER CITY were already out of

sight by half-time at ALRESFORD TOWN as they eventually ran out 6-1 winners. Dominic Allen and Chris Mason had

put City into a comfortable early lead and two became three when Jamie White scored after Adam Roberts' shot was

saved. Charlie Smeeton then made it 4-0 when he convereted Allen;'s cross. Jamie White made it five on 55 minutes

after another assist from Dom Allen and White was then denied in his quest for a hat-trick by striking the woodwork

twice. It was soon 6-0 when Charlie Smeeton's cross was deflected home by Tom Dunford, with the massive help of an

Adie de la Nougerede deflection. Michael McEnery scored a header in the dying stages of the game when he headed

home a Danilio Cadete cross.
