Exercise 7: Advanced Formatting

1. Type up a document that looks like this:

Introduction to Formatting

Microsoft Word offers many methods for changing the way a document looks. You can do things like change the style of the letters, change the size, and change the colors and many other formatting options.

Fonts

Fonts are the different options for changing the way your letters look. Some fonts are professional looking. Others are more artistic or creative.

Size

You can adjust the size of your letters to whatever you choose. Font sizes are measured in “points”. The default font size in Microsoft Word is 12 point.

2. Highlight the text.

3. Go to Format and then Paragraph.

4. Change the line spacing from Single to 1.5 lines.

5. Click OK.

Using the Format Painter

The format painter allows you to copy formatting changes from one text onto another text.

1. Highlight the first phrase: Introduction to Formatting.

2. Bold the phrase, change the size to 18 point, and change the color to red.

3. Click anywhere in the text “Introduction to Formatting.” The whole line does not need to be highlighted.

4. Double-click the Format Painter icon on your toolbar. It looks like a yellow paint brush.

5. Your mouse cursor should change to a paintbrush shape.

6. Drag your mouse over “Fonts”, as if you were highlighting it. Next, drag your mouse over “Size”.

7. Click on the Format Painter icon to turn it off.

8. Italicize the word “many” in the phrase: “Microsoft Word offers many options…”

9. Double-click on the Format Painter icon.

10. Highlight the word “look” in the phrase: “changing the way your letters look.” Next, highlight the word “default” in the phrase: “The default font size…”

11. Click on the Format Painter icon to turn it off.

Using the Font Dialog Box

1. Highlight the words “Microsoft Word” in your first paragraph.

2. Go the Format menu and select Font.

3. There are three tabs at the top of the dialog box. Make sure the Font tab is selected.

4. Select Arial from the Font list. Select Bold from the Font Style list. Select Green for the Font Color.

5. Click the Shadow box under Effects. Click OK.

6. Highlight “Introduction to Formatting”.

7. Go to Format and then Font.

8. The Underline Styles list gives you many more options than the Underline icon. It allows you to pick double, dotted and wavy lines. You can also change the color of the underline.

9. Pick an underline style for your title.

10. Click OK.

Changing Case

1. Triple-click on the first paragraph (the one containing your formatted Microsoft Word). Triple-clicking selects the whole paragraph!

2. From the Format menu, select Change Case.

3. Select the lowercase option. Click OK.

4. Change it back to Sentence case using the Change Case dialog box.

5. Highlight the title “Introduction to Formatting”.

6. Change the case to UPPERCASE.

Inserting a Horizontal Line

1. Click between the first paragraph and the title “Fonts”.

2. Click on the little arrow next to the Outside Border button on your toolbar.

3. Click on the horizontal line button.

4. Click between your second paragraph and the title “Size”.

5. Add a horizontal line there as well.

6. Save your work as Exercise 7. It should look something like this:
