Since you're holding (and hopefully reading and carrying around with you everywhere) this booklet, you've most probably been accepted to the department of English at the University of Turku. Congratulations and welcome aboard!

Most of you are about to get involved in something completely new, with its book exams, academic

quarters, credit points, mass lectures and whatnot, i.e. the academic world. You'll learn to know that as grand as it sounds, it mostly means studying hard using fancy words.

But (see what I did here, I started a sentence with but, oh nose!) that's only one half of being a student. The other half consists of new friends, parties in the middle of the week, hungover lectures, ridiculously cheap lunches, sitz parties and all kinds of different events and activities Anglica arranges for you. I warmly recommend attending some, if not all, since it's the best way to meet people and make friends.

Oh yes, Anglica. We're the student organisation of English and we're here to take care of your needs. Besides arranging fun stuff for you, we're the ones to help you with any questions and problems, definitely when it comes to something study-related and probably when it's something else. So don't hesitate to turn to us, and don't be a stranger. On the contrary, consider us your family here at the university. Be sure to read a more elaborate introduction of Anglica a few pages later.

We made this booklet, so that you'd have some help getting hold of things, or for bedtime reading if you will. You'll find info on Anglica, local bars and restaurants listed and reviewed, some useful maps, as well as other useful stuff. Check them out, especially if you're new to Turku. This booklet is nevertheless nothing compared to your tutors, who've sacrificed their time and energy just to guide you into university life safe and sound. So use them, as much as possible. Your dear tutors are introduced on p. 4-11.

All this said, have fun (really, these are the times we'll remember when we're old and boring) and don't get too overwhelmed by all the new information, you'll be just fine. Good luck, bon courage, lycka till, viel Glück, etc! Looking forward to meeting all you guys,

DEAR FRESHMEN OF 2012,

Julia 3

When you first arrive through the University doors, the place can seem a bit frightening, but don’t you worry! The tutors are here for you to help you get started. As a freshman you are surely full of questions, where is the main building, where to eat, how does the library work, who is that Kalervo Väänänen bloke? You can always rely on the tutors to guide you through the mess that is the University, here they introduce themselves:

Tuulikki Romu

1. I'm Tuulikki, from Turku for several years now and hopefully for many more. I remember best the first days of lectures, in early September, when it was warm and sunny and I went for ice cream with new friends between lectures.

2. Be open-minded & curious about new things.

3. I'm really bad with music, so I'll just leave this question unsanswered to avoid saying something stupid ;)

4

TUTORS 2012

1. Who are you (name, hometown etc.) and what do you remember best about your freshman year?2. Give your best advice for a new freshman!3. Name one song that describes you best!

Do swap phone numbers with your tutor during the first day. That way there's always someone to help you if and when you get lost or don't know where you're supposed to be.

Page 5: Rookie Guide 2012

Emma Uski

1. Hi, I'm Emma. I was born in Turku but moved to Vantaa when I was four. Last autumn I moved back to Turku, my one and only hometown. The thing I remember best about my freshman year is without a doubt all the great parties and happenings.

2. Don't stress too much!

3. It's got to be Swagger - a song by the amazing Flogging Molly.

Viivi Mustonen

1. I'm Viivi, originally from Vihti (Nummela, to be exact. Proud to say I'm from Turku these days!), and I remember being lost with all the new stuff but eventually learned the tricks to get by university, life and everything. Newfound friends, great parties by Anglica and other Thursday night fillers and stressing over exams, deadlines and term papers but eventually passing them like a boss (well, on my own scale of yeah-this-is-good-enough-now-let's-do-something-else) are the most prominent memories from my first year. Also, getting to know Turku was a pretty big part of my freshman year, and I encourage everybody to explore our beautiful city when you have a chance, if you already haven't!

2. Be active, participate and get together with your fellow students. It's also good to focus on your studies (gasp!) - don't be afrad to do your own thing and make your own choices when it comes to major and minor subjects. Just remember to relax and have fun in the middle of it. And really, there are no stupid questions, so ask away.

3. Importance of Being Idle by Oasis. Just 'cause.

5

Page 6: Rookie Guide 2012

Katri Blomqvist

1. My name is Katri Blomqvist and I come from Salo (the smaller version of Turku, that is). About my freshman year I remeber best all the awesome new friends that I made and even though I can't wholly recall what happened at the rookie sitz party, that was a night to remeber.

2. My best advice for a new freshman would be... make a list of all the things you have to deal with during the first weeks at uni, as it is oh-so-easy to forget to pay the TYY membership bill etc. And don't lose the list!

3. A song that describes me the best (one of those): Scandinavian Music Group - Takarivin Pojille

Karoliina Inha

1. I'm Karo, a 2nd year student originally from Tampere. Freshman year to me meant new people & places, interesting lectures and partying. Finding like-minded people that don't look at you strangely if you start analyzing linguistic features of script when watching Friends. Also finding out that

Tampere ISN'T the center of Finland, but rather quite a small place in the middle of nowhere...

2. Get to know people and go to hang outs/parties! Keeping up with your studies is important, but you'll never get through them if you don't have the support of friends. It's good to get out and not spend your time only worrying about fricatives and grammar rules.

3. Paradisio-Bailando, simply 'cause I'm a true party girl at heart, as you'll probably notice once you get to Anglica's first parties at Lyni...

6

Jonna Tolppanen

1. Hello there, I'm Jonna and as you might have figured out by now, I'm one of the tutors this year. I have my roots in the notorious Lahti City. I was one of you rookies just last year, so hopefully I'll have some memories to share with you guys. Or not? Well, at least I remember that I had a lot of exams and sometimes it felt like I needed extra hours to my day, but I had fun too. Everything was so

new and exciting!

2. Figure out your learning style and do not leave anything to the last minute, or you may have to go all Merlin the wizard on your deadlines in order to submit everything on time. Do remember to take a break from studying from time to time and attend some good old student parties! Make new friends and remember to enjoy the ride.

3. Adam Lambert - Cuckoo

7

Anne Heikkilä

1. Anne. Hometown: Turku, V-city to be exact. I know it's a cliche but what I remember best about my freshman year are the friends I made.

2. My advice for a new freshman would be to BE ACTIVE! If there's a party or any event outside the classroom, at least pop by and you'll meet interesting people for sure!

3. Over the moon from the musical Rent. Do not ask why.

Page 8: Rookie Guide 2012

Maria Jokela

1. Hey! I'm Maria, now starting my second year with English in Turku. I'm from the magical swamps of Lapland (not kidding with the magic part - my hometown advertises itself as "Lapin taikamaa". for real.), but eventually found my way to Turku via Spain, Germany, and California. I was really excited to start a new life in Turku, as well as my university studies, finally! My first year in one word:

FUN. The fall was pretty tough, though, which was something I wasn't necessarily expecting; So many courses, so little time… But it all turned out well and I ended up learning a lot, honestly. For example, I had no idea certain sounds in English existed. I also learned many things about my own accent.

2. Enjoy your year!! Get to know your fellow freshmen and get to know Anglica. But be sure to take care of your basic studies (basically the whole fall and a few courses in the spring) as well - it'll pay off.

3. Lastenlaulu by Stepa, because I could easily make up as ridiculous stories as that song includes. (also, Lapland rocks.)

Tiiamaria Välimaa

1. I'm Tiiamaria, also known as Tiiti and I'm now starting my 3rd year at the university. I'm originally from the heart of Lapland, Sodankylä and moving to Turku was quite a change in my life. So if you ever have the need to ease your homesickness, come to my place and we'll drink some wine and well, drink some more wine.

Jarkko Kouhia

1. Hello, I'm Jarkko, a 3rd year student by the time you read this. I live in TKU (I kid you not!), but I was born in Zürich and have lived most of my life so far in various locations within the 03 area in Finland. What I remember best is that I was told that the weekend of a student begins on Thursday. I also remember that I had a lecture on Friday morning the whole year. Bit of a let down. Thus I made sure that in my second year I would have absolutely nothing on Fridays.

2. If you're not loaded and happen to live outside the city center, I'd recommend you try to find the energy to walk or ride a bike to those bigger and cheaper groceries a little farther away. Having been lazy for the two years I've studied so far, I made the mistake that I calculated how much I could have saved had I not gone to those nearby Siwas and little K-markets all the time.

3. I Like Traffic Lights (Monty Python). There is something in the hypnotizing monotony of this track that really speaks to me.

In my freshman year I was lost and confused but I met some awesome people and at the end of the year I realised it was over way too soon.

2. Be social. Attend parties, hangouts, events and whatnot. Don't be afraid to talk to strangers even though your mum probably warned you about it at some point.

3. Float On by Modest Mouse. Just because life isn't meant to be taken too seriously.

Page 10: Rookie Guide 2012

Mikko Salminen

1. I'm Mikko, hello there and welcome to the Uni. hill! I'm a 2nd year student, a space geek and a record enthusiast, studying English and North American Studies in my hometown of Turku. (20810 'til I die!) My freshman fall was a blur; heavy studying accompanied with weekly excursions to Lyni. The best memories were those of Anglica parties, like the legendary Pilttisitz and

others. Springtime provided much needed downshifting for me.

2. The tutors here are for YOUR help; don't hesitate to ask them if something's bothering you. The older students are an endless source of information, and they don't mind helping you out. (Although they might start reminiscing about their own "Golden Years".) Also, to quote my own tutor Hai here, this is the only time in your life when you're able to lay down your work for a minute and grab a cold one from the fridge. It just might relax your nerves when the deadline's approaching.

3. I had a different answer on this in Baccanalia, but I'm going to say the Descendents classic "I Like Food". 17 seconds of pure gold.

Katrine Bruun

1. Hello there, I’m Katrine, 19 years of age and thus starting my second year here at the University of Turku. Roughly a year back I recall being sick with anticipation, yet also quite excited about everything that might lie ahead – exactly where I expect the newbies to be at the moment. When looking back now, I reckon the thing that struck me most was the novelty of it all:

Page 11: Rookie Guide 2012

Anna Vahtera

1. I’m Anna, a 22-year-old girl originally from Mynämäki. I've lived in Turku since 2009, excluding a year in England, so Turku is pretty much my home town now. My freshman year is still in fresh memory, because I’ve just finished it, and I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed my time in Turku University. The things I remember best are the events Anglica organised, such as the BBQ party, Anglica’s birthday and numerous other

happenings, though I wasn’t able to go to as many as I would’ve wanted.

2. The best advice I can think of is related to what I said above: make sure you don’t have other stuff, like work, on the same days as are the important Anglican events such as Pilttisitsit. You really don’t want to miss those, like I did. Learn from my mistakes! Another, study-related, advice is that it's good to do some additional courses in the first year, not just English studies. I didn’t have any minor subjects, but I started studying Russian at the Language Centre and earned 10 study points relatively easily!

3. Pariisin Kevät - Tulivuoria, one of my favourite songs, and also describes me well in a way

11

the people, campus area and so on. Familiarizing yourself with the works is an essential part of year #1.

2. The beginning is always the toughest! So be active – attend the events with others and get to know your fellow students. Along the year, the support you get from your peers will be irreplaceable.

3. First of the Year by Skrillex. People tend to associate me with dubstep for some reason, probably because I make just as little sense.

Unless you have sought out everything out of our website, or have a sibling/friend in Anglica who has told you everything about us, you might be wondering, who are we and what is it that we do?

Founded in 1958, Anglica is the community for English students at the University. It functions as a bridge between the students and the staff, middle step between you and TYY, provides tutoring for you, aids you in your studies by, for example, getting study materials, and of course, arranges great parties, movie nights, sports and other events.

Official mattersAnglica has a representative that frequents the weekly staff meets once a month, where s/he can keep the staff informed about the students' views about the studies. If you have suffered injustice or the course assessments are not in regulation with the department etc. Be not afraid to come talk to us. It is our task to look after your rights, studywise. Anglica can tackle even hard subjects, while keeping your anonymity. We can also contact TYY for you or have any of your questions or comments forwarded to the person in question. We also have a representative in Humanitas ry. (head organization in the Faculty of Humanities) who can work with your matters on the faculty level. Remember, there are never questions that have no answers, or problems that have no solutions.

You should also join Anglica's mailing list ASAP. Contact one of the board members or your tutor. You can also do this via the interweb at: http://www.anglica.org/

Who are we?What is it that we do?

For me? Cool!

ABOUT ANGLICA

Page 13: Rookie Guide 2012

So how is Anglica organised? In the autumn, the members of Anglica choose/vote a board of nine (9) members and two (2) vice members in ageneral meeting for the next calendar year. There is another general meeting during the spring where we sum up the year. The board meets once a week to discuss any study matters or to arrange events. The board meetings are also open for members, so you are free to participate.

Party mattersLets face it, what would study life be without good parties? Anglica is known around the campus to raise havoc roaming in the blue overalls while speaking Finglish loudly. Traditional parties include Turku Survival (breaking in the newbies), Kostajaiset (vice versa), Halloween, Pilttisitsit etc. Turku survival is something you should definitely not miss.

During the autumn we also go on Not-Goom cruise and to 'VarjoAppro' (in Tampere). We also arrange a number of nightclub and sitz parties with other student organisations that you should definitely check out. If you're not so much in to rough partying, don't worry, Anglica has still lots to offer. Roughly every two weeks we have movie nights where you can enjoy some fine films, plus Board game nights & other related events if there is interest.

The sportier folk can play floorball in Iskeri on Sundays or come to our football games against other student organisations. Remember, we are always open for suggestions.

13The winners of Kostajaiset last year.. Oh yes.

Page 14: Rookie Guide 2012

These are the people behind Anglica’s events and parties and who otherwise look out for your interests. You’ll definitely get the idea better if you visit Anglica’s weekly meetings. It also earns you points on your Pilttipassi. If any of these jobs seem appealing to you, do not hesitate to participate and take a role on the board yourself next year.

Chair: Salla RokkaThe Chair’s most visible assignment is running the meetings, and planning the agendas for them once a week and trying to pull together the board’s hopefully unanimous decisions. The Chairperson also has the ungratifying task of distributing tasks to the other members, preferably so that nobody becomes too loaded with work. The chair is the person with the duty of filling in the official papers to TYY and some other organisations. She also participates the staff meeting once a month with another board member. All in all, the chair has to keep track of things being done, and those that ought to be done.

Vice Chair: Tomi RautaojaAs the title reveals, this member is the one to stand in if the Chair falls sick, but he is often an invaluable source of ideas – and the board’s common memory – as the specific tasks for him are fewer than for the rest. The Vice Chair might easily end up taking care of things that aren’t designed for any other board member, but one annual task is copying and selling course literature sets for first-year students. You'll also meet him on Coffee Hours every week!

While being on the board is fun, it’s also a nice addition to the end of your CV. And of course it’s something to tell your grandkids about.

14

THE BOARD

Page 15: Rookie Guide 2012

The Treasurer: Heikki HaapamäkiIf you are one of those quirky humanists with a suspicious fascination towards math and accounting, this is the dream spot for you. The treasurer keeps watch on our funds and advises the rest of us on what we can afford and what we certainly cannot. He also keeps record of all our expenses, and the money we receive, membership fees and bakesale profits, for example. He also sees to that all cruise, theatre and such tickets are being paid to the account, correctly and on time. The treasurer also plans the early budget together with the chair.

The secretary: Viivi MustonenThe main job for the secretary is to listen and listen (talking isn’t banned, though!) at the meetings and draw out the minutes after each meeting and hang them up in H2 for any Anglica member to see. Admittedly, this can be a tough one, as the meetings may sidetrack from each point in the agenda just about everytime. On the other hand, once the matter at hand has been settled and decided, the secretary can simply close her ears until something relevant comes up again. It has been a tradition to hand over this position to a first-year student. Wink-wink.

Educational Matters or Kopo: Saara Yli-KauhaluomaThis is a relatively new position in the board, only since 2004, actually. She is the third board member who can take part in the staff meetings (and frequents them most often). She also participates TYY’s ‘kopo’ (kouluspoliittinen sektori) meetings that deal with more general and all-embracing decisions, and conflicting aims at university level nationwide, but also educational issues related to our university only. Her job, then, is to inform the board and all Anglica members on any burning developments, or backlashes...

Whatever it is that you pay on Anglica’s account, please remember to put your name and the reason why you have paid. It really eases the treasurers work when he doesn’t have to guess.

15

Page 16: Rookie Guide 2012

Info: Hai NguyenThe Info’s most important job is to sketch and e-mail the member list of all our parties and other events. He is also responsible for going through a lot of e-mail from TYY and other student organisations and forwarding any of them that might have significance for our members (might sometimes seem like spam, but seriously the mails you get, you don’t want to miss). He also takes care of our website and creates Facebook entries of some of our events. All in all, the info-person should have a good sense of calendar usage to know when the next event is going to happen.

Projects: Julia HamaraProjects may sound like a vague thing to handle, since almost anything can be called a project. And that's exactly what this post involves: almost anything. Her most important tasks are organising the bakesales four times a year and ordering overalls for the first-year students every Autumn. In addition, handling any bigger events (Turku Survival, Fox Hunt, possible excursions etc.) that need more time to manage (aka. a project) fall under her jurisdiction. Also our annual publications, Baccanalia as well as this booklet at hand, are her responsibility.

Party and Culture: Pirkka Hallamaa & Janne HaapaniemiThis sector is considered so important that each year we appoint two people to handle it. Their job is usually to call and make reservations for party premises and to contact other student organisations for possible shared parties. The “PCs” also often end up managing any competitions & announcements etc. in the parties (well being the darn party organiser). A good knowledge, or pure enthusiasm, for Turku nightlife and cultural possibilities is a huge asset here, for fresh ideas are always welcome.

If you don’t feel like joining the board (but why wouldn’t you?) you can always come to our meetings to give any ideas or suggestions.

16

Page 17: Rookie Guide 2012

Vice Members: Mikko Salminen & Jarkko KouhiaThe vice members join the board meetings regularly and help out in projects where man power is scarse, substitute for other members if the need be, or use their special skills to help the board. For instance, there isalways a need for a good graphic designer (posters, Baccanalia, Rookie guide etc.). Usually, the vice members end up carrying stuff to, decorating and cleaning the party/event premises. However, when the need arises, or there is the will, the vice members have been known to also reserve event premises and aid the work load of the PCs. The vice members are the personal henchmen of the Chair.

Collecting the stamps is a good excuse to go out and party if you feel too guilty to do so othewise.

1717

You will be given a pilttipassi when you join Anglica. If you are the first to collect it full of stamps, you will be given your overall for free! The few next ones will get Anglica's songbook. You can collect stamps for example by coming to our weekly meetings, or by helping the party organisers by cleaning after, helping to carry stuff etc. or coming to our parties/events and showing some excellence in your partying might earn you an extra stamp. Weirdness is highly approved here. Contact the tutors or any member of the board if you feel like you've earned a point here.

Here is a list of more or less decent pubs & bars in and around Turku’s city center. If you’re new to the city and totally lost, check the map on this guide, or if all else fails, ask a local! Some bars may have changed their age limits and/or have varying age limits between weekdays/ends. Any bar that is worth a visit has Anglica’s logo next to it.

Alvar is a real nice sit down bar. The manager is a brit and has sought out to make Alvar a “living room”, which it feels like; cozy. Some brits hang around here.

Bar4 is a relaxed bar where award-winning bartenders serve drinks while you're playing boardgames or watching sports on the screen. Top DJ's transform the place into a nightlife hotspot on weekends (Krapulansiirtoklubi on Sundays is great for students!)

The Castle is an Irish bar that shows a lot of footie (soccer) and hockey. Some native English speakers here as well.

Club Marilyn is a night club that has a rather legendary reputation. Remember that “lyni/lynkky” during the week (student parties) is pretty much a totally different place than it is during weekend; people and pricewise. We recommend that you party during the week.

Dynamo is said to be a 'pot-smoker cave'. Not true. A great night club with reasonable prices. Lots of humanists around.

Edison a sit down bar in the city centre with billiard downstairs.

El Gringo is a hangaround bar during the week and a party spot during weekends, complete with cheap beer and the best tortillas.

Kerttu is both a restaurant/bar, a really nice place to visit if you're both eating out/playing board games and enjoying a good time.

Koulu has its own brewery, which makes it a place worth a visit.

Proffan Kellari - fancy a pint between lectures? Not only is proffa in the campus, you can also reserve a cabinet for any bigger group meetings you may have, free of charge.

Three Beers - commonly known as “trebari” is the closest bar to you if you live in Yo-kylä. Mainly students roam here. Board games and billiard available.

Many of the bars downtown belong to the S-Group. While carrying an S-Group card around is so middleaged, you do get discounts with it in their bars (cheaper beer = better).22

TURKU RESTAURANT GUIDEStudent Restaurants

Page 24: Rookie Guide 2012

Fast Food And RestaurantsThis list does not contain all the restaurants in Turku, not even close, but these are, once again, pretty decent places to eat. R stands for a sit down, 'fancy' restaurant, while F is for fast food (pizza, kebab etc). Looking after your interests, as we do, we also put a P (parents) to mark a place where you might want to take anyone from out of town you want to impress (note that these are also pretty pricey, hence 'pappa betalar'). G is for veggie restaurants. Again, Anglica recommends the Anglica-marked places.

Araz Kebab is pretty close to Alvar and has good pizza for a decent price. Worth a visit if you find yourself near there.

Blanko is a restaurant/bar by the river. Great place to spend some time, especially during summers on their terrace. You should definitely try the brunch on Sundays.

City Kebab is 'always' open. If you have any doubts where to get food after a night out, head here.

Kasvisravintola Keidas should really belong with student restauraunts, but anyways if you're a vegetarian/vegan, eat here as Assari's veggie meals aren't always that fancy.

Trattoria Romana - real Italian food next to campus.

Remember that some of the riverboats also serve food, so you can have a meal and drink beer at the same time! Also, vegetarians might appreciate Sahara's falafel rolls. Best in town. 25
