Dear Families, Welcome to the second Year 7 newsletter for 2021. I hope everyone has had a great holiday and you have returned refreshed, ready for the new term. Below is an outline of the learning that will take place in term 2. Mathematics: In Term 2, students will continue to explore the Numberdrawer of maths, and focus specifically on fractions, decimals and percentages. Currently, some of the learning points being explored are: I can explain what a fraction is and how it can be represented as a shape, collection, object or measurement. I can place a given fraction on a number line and recognize equivalences. I can add and subtract fractions with like denominators. I can use fractions to solve authentic problems. I can convert between fractions, decimals and percentages. English: The English program will cover essential skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing. In writing, students will learn about the text structure and language features of two text types – explanation (procedures) and expositions (persuasive). This will involve students planning, drafting and publishing their own exposition text with the intent to persuade the reader to their opinion. We will continue to use the Seven Steps to Writing Success to frame our writing instruction. Explanation texts will involve students working in small groups to plan, draft and publish a procedural text that younger students would be able to follow in order to play a PE game. Students will be provided with exemplars each lesson and will have a great time both playing and testing their own and their peersgames. Guided reading will develop reading fluency and reading comprehension. Students will view texts from a variety of genres and be aware of a variety of reading comprehension strategies like inferencing, meaning students read between the lineswhen the author implies something but doesnt exactly state it. Humanities & Social Sciences: HASS comprises of four subject areas - History, Geography, Economics and Business and Civics and Citizenship. In term 2, history will be the focus, with Year 7’s concentrating on Ancient Greece, after investigating different time periods, primary/ secondary resources and Out of Africa. Science: This term, Year 7’s will explore Chemical Sciences, where students will develop an understanding of mixtures that contain a combination of pure substances that can be separated using a range of techniques. Students will construct a hypothesis, conduct experiments and draw conclusions, before explaining their findings. Digital Technologies: Students will continue their learning in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) through a range of different challenges designed to test the students on their ability to display leadership skills, communication, and group work and design thinking. This learning will take place in the Hive as an alternative program to Wakakirri every Thursday morning. Specialist subjects Health & PE After an extremely successful start to the year, I am excited to introduce new topics that will allow students to develop new skills. In term 2 students will learn about nutrition and the importance of healthy eating. Students will also learn about the benefits that physical activity has on your overall health. The term 2 Physical Education component involves the following: Invasion games- Students will be learning the skills involved in invasion games through the sports of European Handball and Soccer. The skills that students will learn include; dribbling, passing, shooting, defending and goalkeeping. The Basketball lunchtime sporting competition for Year 5-7 students will continue to run. It has been an extremely popular and even competition so far. Mr Cuconits - Specialist Health/PE Teacher Auslan This term in Auslan we will be trying to 'sell' Auslan to other schools-promoting Auslan and encouraging other schools to teach Auslan as their LOTE. WE will create power Point Presentations to do this. We will then focus on celebrations social norms in the Deaf community while playing games and sharing in social events. Kylie Neilson - Specialist Auslan Teacher Music & Drama This term in the Arts our students will be working in teams to create their own short movies! They will be responsible for planning, scripting, filming and editing their work. If the story requires a different setting the students will be able to use our green screen studio. They will also use their musical skills to compose the soundtrack! We can’t wait to share the finished films with you! Chris Luke - specialist Music/Drama Teacher High School Packages The Year 7/8 transition process has commenced and High School packages were sent home this week, including information of how to access high school application forms.
