Q: What's the difference betweenmechanical engineers and civilengineers?A: Mechanical engineers buildweapons; civil engineers buildtargets.

A man in Amsterdam feels theneed to confess, so he goes to hispriest.

"Forgive me, Father, for I havesinned. During WWII, I hid arefugee in my attic."

"Well," answers the priest,"that's not a sin."'

"But I made him agree to payme 20 guilders for every week hestayed."

"I admit that wasn't good, butyou did it for a good cause."

"Oh, thank you, Father. Thateases my mind. I have one morequestion."

"What is that, my son?""Do I have to tell him the war is

    over?"

A man walking down the streettrips over an old oil lamp. As hepicks it up, a genie pops out andsays, "I will grant you one wish."

The man says, "I want to live ina mansion in Hawaii, but I'm afraidof boats and planes, so I wantthere to be a bridge from here tothere."

The genie sighs. "That's toomuch work. Sorry, can't make ithappen."

The man says, "Fine, then Iwant to understand women."

The genie replies, "Would youlike two lanes or four on thatbridge?"

A wife comes in and yells,"Honey, pack your clothes! I justwon the lottery."

Her husband yells back,"Should I pack for the beach or forthe mountains?"

His wife replies, "I don't care!Just get the hell out."

A man's house is on fire. Heruns out of the house with his sonand tells him to wait outside. Thenhe runs back in and gets hisdaughter and brings her outside.

Then his wife. Then the dog. Thenhe goes back in a couple of timeswithout bringing out anybody.

So a fireman asks him, "Whyare you going back in there?"

The man replies, "Just wanmak sure about my mother-in-law."

A police officer in a small townstopped a motorist who wasspeeding down Main Street. ''Butofficer,'' the man said, ''I canexplain.''

''Just be quiet!!!'' snapped theofficer. ''Or I'm going to let you cooloff in jail until the chief gets back.''

''But officer, I just wanted tosay...''

''And I said KEEP QUIET! Nowyou're going to jail!''

A few hours later, the officerchecked up on his prisoner andsaid, ''Lucky for you the chief is athis daughter's wedding. He'll be ina great mood when he gets here.''

''Don't count on it,'' said theprisoner. ''I'm the groom.'

A very subtle suggestion is givenhere. That the seeker of truth shouldtalk, keeping same purpose in sight, else he should remember Allaah-SWT quietly. Time should never bewasted over things which do notbenefit in the Hereafter. To earn alawful livelihood and to reform thes o c i e t y , t h o u g h t e m p o r a lengagements, vet do contribute to theHereafter. Hence these matters mustbe discussed, but while doing so theseeker should not be unmindful ofAllaah-SWT . An interesting fact isthat the destruction of such mightynations has not disrupted the cycle oflife in the least. Allaah-SWT createsnew generations and people. Wefrequently witness this phenomenonin our daily lives. So many people areburied everyday and lost in oblivion, yet life moves on towards itsdestination where everything shallone day come to an end.

The Makkans demanded that aBook compiled in the heavens shouldhave been sent unto them. It was justan excuse for rejection, otherwise toaccept the truth, the exemplary lifestyle of the Holy Prophet"-SW wasample evidence. Had there beensincerity in them and in their demand,it could have been met: but they areso unfortunate that even if their wishwas true and thev did see the Book

thoroughly to their satisfaction, theywould still have called it a magicalwonder. Their demand is not basedon the desire to seek guidance, butonly to render the Holy Prophet-SWmute', as depicted by their otherdemand of talking to an angel directly. The latter demand is even moreabsurd because a glimpse of an angelor of the Hereafter is such aconclusive evidence of the truth, thatany rejection thereafter would give norespite to a non-believer, nor will hisrepentance be accepted. Everyperson experiences these visions onthe eve of death. The Quran makesmention of the dialogues betweenangels-AS and the non-believers atthat critical moment. When this stageis reached, the doors of repentanceare closed. Just as for the Pharaoh, when he repented before hisdrowning, he was told: "Now! Whileyou had been amongst the rejecters.'*

If these non-believers see theangels-AS, they too will be treated in asimilar manner and no respite will begiven to them to repent. And if theyturn the believers, there remains noneed for such a demand. One thing ispossible that an angel in human guiseis sent unto them: whence they shallnot be destroyed but still that angel-AS cannot match the humangreatness of the Holy Prophet-SW .

He-SW will have his-SW own status. So when these non-believers do notaccept what the Holy Prophet-SWsays, how can it be expected of themto go along with what an angel-AS inhuman guise will tell them?

The Holy Prophet-SW is beingcomforted and told not to grieve overtheir impudence, as the precedingProphets"-AS too had to face suchcircumstances. Whenever the non-believers were defeated in argument, they resorted to derision and enjoyedvexing them by their words withoutrealiz ing the gravity of theirwickedness. As a result they wereseized by a foretold tormenting doomthat they used to laugh over and wereannihilated in disgrace. Now the non-believers contemporary to the HolyProphet-SW also have only oneoption and that is either to believe inand obey h im-SW and l ivehonourably here and in the Hereafter, falling this, they will be humiliated, disgraced and uprootedn

    The English Tafseer of Quran

    Continued from Last month

Translation and Tafseer Surah Name: Al-An'am Meaning:The Cattle, Reveleaed at Makkah

Infidelity is a rust, which renders theQalb worthless. At a certain stageof this denial, the heart loses theability to accept the truth. This is whythe disbeliever's attitude is ofindifference towards the Quran. Notonly this, but also whenever theyreceived Divine Commandments theynever obeyed any! Now they aredenying the Quran or the HolyProphet-SW , although his-SWnoble life, his-SW family, his-SWchildhood, his-SW teenage and his-SW youth are all well known to themas exemplary. Even before his-SWP r o p h e t h o o d , h e - S W l i v e dhonourably and righteously in asociety plagued by evil . Thepolytheists of Makkah called him-SWSadiq (the truthful) and Amin (thetrustworthy). A person who nevermade a false statement about anyfellow being could, by no stretch ofimagination, lie about his-SWCreator. The fact is that until the ageof forty years, the Holy Prophet-SWhad not been to any school ormonastery nor did he-SW become thestudent of any priest or rabbi orsorcerer. He-SW could not even writehis-SW own name. And then onattaining the age of forty, he declaredthat he had received Allaah-SWT sMessage: it not only excels inguidance and wisdom, but is also aunique piece of literature andknowledge. If the non-believersascribe it to a human being, they mayassemble their eminent scholars, poets and literary men including theirdeities, to produce individually orjointly a single phrase, which meets

the standard of the Quran. Inspite ofall their efforts they could not, and willnever be able to do so.Yet they did notaccept the Message of Allaah-SWT .Instead, in their desperation, theystarted making fun of it. They weresoon engulfed by Allaah-SWT sWrath, as forewarned by the Quran.

The poly the ists sus ta inedhumiliating defeats after defeatculminating in the fall of Makkah to theMuslims. The entire Arabia cameunder Muslims suzerainty and anIslamic State was established. TheJews too were disgraced; some wereslain and others exiled from theirhomes. The punishment of theHereafter is not too far away wherethe penalty for disbelief is, of course.Hell.

These people denying the truthare traders by profession andtravelling is an important part of their

lives. Havent they seen the ruins ofdisobedient nations gone by, to learna lesson from their fate and feel theeffects of their humiliating doom? They must contemplate over the factthat these nations, too, were oncealive and prosperous more powerfuland glorious than them. Their menwere taller, stronger and richer. Theirfarms received generous rainfalls andabundant water from rivers andyielded golden crops. But every sinhas a logical end. When those nationstook to wrongdoings and did not giveup the path of sin, Allaah-SWTdestroyed them. Their fields werescorched, the rivers dried up and theirhomes were reduced to ashes, without a trace of the dwellers.Neither riches nor glorv could savethem from Divine Punishment. Thehistory of the People of Ad, Thamudand of Madayn bear witness to it andmust be pondered over. The theme ofQuran is not history but thereformation of people throughhistorical facts.

What a difficult choice.Trumper, my favouritecricketer of all time? I'veseen film of him. From memory, he'swearing a large broad-brimmed hatand lashes a short ball over gully forfour.

Sobers, January 13, 1961 -unbeaten on 152 - third match of thetied Test series. I was eight. I reckonthis was my first day at a Test match. Ican still see him thrashing drivesthrough cover with those remarkablyloose limbs. That morning my fathertold me we might see something veryspecial, and we did.

As a fan or journalist I've seen theChappells, Kim Hughes, DavidGower and the equally graceful MarkWaugh, Allan Border, Brian Lara,Steve Waugh, Sachin Tendulkar,Javed Miandad. It's so hard to choosethat I'm going for one over of brilliantbatting I saw from close quarters.

It was my first-class debut, NewSouth Wales v West Indians,November 1981. Viv Richardscaptained the tourists. He batted atNo. 7 in the first innings and hadn'tbeen out there long when LenPascoe, still a Test bowler at thatstage, charged in for the first ball of an

over on a flat Sydney pitch. I had aringside seat at second slip, withSteve Rixon keeping and the NSWcaptain, Rick McCosker, at first slip.

Lennie's first ball wastypically short. Viv ignored itwith typical disdain. Lenniewas not impressed andgave him a mouthful. Icouldn't hear what was saidbut I saw Viv's chest ands h o u l d e r s e x p a n dalarmingly. He strolled a fewsteps down the pitch andcasually patted a few spots.I remembered the two had a

history of aggravation on the field.Lennie had many such histories.

The second ball was short again, just outside off stump. Viv didn'tbother to move his feet. He justleaned back a little and pulled it forfour over straight midwicket.

The third ball was similar but this

time Viv hit it earlier and squarer. Fourmore.

At this point McCosker sighedknowingly and turned to me. "Youbetter go out to square leg, just behindthe umpire." In those days the SCGwicket table was noticeably higherthan the outfield. I was at backwardsquare, about 30 metres fromRichards. But because of the slope, Iwas looking up at those menacingshoulders.

"Pitch it up, Lennie," I thought. "IfViv hooks one towards me I'm goingto have to try to catch it. It's going to becoming at 100mph and I could be infor a broken hand. But I've got to try."

Lennie being Lennie, the fourthball was also short, but it wentnowhere near me. It smashed into themidwicket pickets.

Fifth ball, Lennie pitched it up. Vivstill wasn't bothering to move his feet.He just leaned into it and creamed iton the rise through cover. A fourthconsecutive boundary.

The last ball of the over was on agood length just outside off stump. Vivhit it with tremendous power throughextra cover. Five imperious fours in arow.

I watched Pascoe, head down, take his hat and jumper from theumpire and head to the safety of deepfine leg. I never thought I'd see LenPascoe so resigned to his fate.

And then I looked back at VivRichards and wondered what it mustfeel like to be good enough to decideto destroy a Test bowler in the nextfew deliveries - and to do it with suchauthority.

I certainly wasn't playing clubcricket any moren

The skin is one of the first things people notice aboutyou. It is the largest organ in the body, accountingfor 16 percent of total body weight. The skin is abarometer of overall health so weather you're glowing orpale and uninteresting your skin says much about yourphysical and emotional state. When you are ill or rundown, it shows up in pimples, dryness, eczema(dermatitis), and premature aging. Dry skin may reflectdeficiencies of essential fatty acids (EFAs) and vitamin E;sensitive skin is often due to poor digestion; pimply skinusually indicates a diet high in fatty, processed food.So what does all this mean? It means that you need to payclose attention to what you put on your skin and especiallywhat you feed it.

The United Nations will mark its70th anniversary when worldleaders assemble next month atits headquarters in New York. Thoughthere will be plenty of fanfare, it willinadequately reflect the UNs value, notonly as the most important politicalinnovation of the 20th century, but alsoas the best bargain on the planet. But ifthe UN is to continue to fulfill its uniqueand vital global role in the 21st century, itmust be upgraded in three key ways.

Fortunately, there is plenty tomotivate world leaders to do what ittakes.

Two UN Secretaries-General haveoverseen the Millennium DevelopmentGoals (MDGs): Kofi Annan, whointroduced them in 2000, and Ban Ki-moon, who, since succeeding Annan atthe start of 2007, has led vigorously andeffectively to achieve them.

The MDGs have engenderedimpressive progress in povertyreduction, public health, schoolenrollment, gender equal ity ineducation, and other areas. Since 1990(the reference date for the targets), theglobal rate of extreme poverty has beenreduced by well over half more thanfulfilling the agendas number one goal.

Inspired by the MDGs success, the

UNs member countries are set to adoptthe Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)which will aim to end extremepoverty in all its forms everywhere, narrow inequalities, and ensureenvironmental sustainability by 2030next month. This could help to bringabout a global agreement on climatecontrol, under the auspices of the UNFramework Convention on ClimateChange, in Paris in December.

The precise value of the peace, poverty reduction, and environmentalcooperation made possible by the UN isincalculable. If we were to put it inmonetary terms, however, we mightestimate their value at trillions of dollarsper year at least a few percent of theworld economys annual GDP of $100trillion.

Yet spending on all UN bodies andactivities from the Secretariat and theSecurity Council to peacekeepingoperations, emergency responses toep ide mics , a nd h um ani ta r ia noperations for natural disasters, famines, and refugees totaledroughly $45 billion in 2013, roughly $6per person on the planet. That is not justa bargain; i t is a signi f ican tunderinvestment. Given the rapidlygrowing need for global cooperation,

the UN simply cannot get by on itscurrent budget.

Given this, the first reform that Iwould suggest is an increase in funding, with high-income countries contributingat least $40 per capita annually, uppermiddle-income countries giving $8,lower-middle-income countries $2, andlow-income countries $1. With thesecontributions which amount toroughly 0.01 percent of the groupsaverage per capita income the UNwould have about $75 billion annuallywith which to strengthen the quality andreach of vital programs, beginning withthose needed to achieve the SDGs.Once the world is on a robust path toachieve the SDGs, the need for, say, peacekeeping and emergency-reliefoperations should decline as conflictsdiminish in number and scale, andnatural disasters are better preventedor anticipated.

This brings us to the second majorarea of reform: Ensuring that the UN isfit for the new age of sustainabledevelopment.

The third major reform imperative isthe UNs governance, starting with theSecurity Council, the composition ofwhich no longer reflects globalgeopolitical realities. Indeed, theWestern Europe and Other Group(WEOG) now accounts for three of thefive permanent members (France, theUnited Kingdom, and the US). Thatleaves only one permanent position forthe Eastern European Group (Russia),one for the Asia-Pacific Group (China),and none forAfrica or LatinAmerican

Japan has had a very difficultpast. Whitewash has notworked. War memories are notyet distant. The third generation hasbeen facing a dilemma, which looksunresolved between Japan and itsAsian neighbours.

On 14 August, Prime MinisterShinzo Abes expressed a mixedremorse on the 70th anniversary ofend of World War II. He hoped thatthe future generation would not offeran apology. Critics say he playeddown Japans war brutalities. Hedeclared: We must not let ourchildren, grandchildren, and evenfurther generations to come, whohave nothing to do with that war, bepredestined to apologise.

N e x t m o r n i n g J a p a n e s econservat ives, some wearingimperial army uniforms, and someDiet members gathered at thefamous (notorious for Chinese andKoreans) Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyowhere A-Class war dead areburied. Fearing severe reaction fromChina and the two Koreas, Abe didnot go but he still participated. Hesent a ritual cash to show his owncommitment with the souls of dead.

They chanted patriotic songs. They paid homage to dead torevive their own spirit to defendJapan. They asserted that Japanhad done no wrong.

Actually, they were the one whowe r e h e l d re s p o n s i b l e f o raggression 70 years ago. From theMeiji era, it is said that more thanthree million compatriots laid downtheir lives for Japan. They weresoldiers and young Kamikaze

(suicide pilots). The American anger resulted in

atomic bombings of Hiroshima andNagasaki that resulted in heavy toll, making Japan the only nation tohave suffered a nuclear holocaust.Emperor Hirohito announced thesurrender of Japan on 15 August1945.

Emperor Akihito went ahead ofmany steps to that of Abe. Theoutside world has taken up hisapology more seriously than Abes. The mood of Emperor Akihitocontrasted with Abe who took the fullresponsibility of Japans aggressionand offered deep remorse for thewar, expressing hope that the warravages will never be repeated.Together with all of our people, Inow pay my heartfelt tribute to allthose who lost their lives in the war, both on the battlefields andelsewhere, and pray for world peaceand for the continuing developmentof our country, the Emperor said.

    The Socialist Prime MinisterTomiichi Murayama offered the mosthear t fe l t apo logy i n 1 995c o m m e m o r a t i n g t h e 5 0 t hanniversary of end of war, which wasmost welcomed by China and Korea,the nations that suffered the most.They closely watch Japans apologyevents. The present Sino-Japaneserelations hinge on the mood ofapology. China, however, slammed

Abes apology. China was expectinga sincere apology as was stated byChinese Foreign Ministry, addingthat Japan should have made aclean break with the past of militaristaggression, rather than beingevasive on this major issue ofprinciple.

Now the neighbours are nolonger weaker. Two of thempossess nuclear arsenals. Many ofthem challenge Japans economicascendency. My Sheikh Shah SharfuddinAhmed Shah, May Allah'sblessing upon him, used tosay a new Pakistan is bound toemerge. And, I think a new Pakistan isemerging. I see so many signs of anew Pakistan. The state-sponsoredwar on terror, owned by the entirenation, is in full swing. On 14thAugust,a suicide attack resulted in martyrdomof Punjab Home Minister Lt. Col. (R)Shuja Khanzada along with a morethan a dozen others. A few days later,MQM leader Rashid Godil wascritically injured in a targeted firingincident. This is the latest installmentof the price we're paying in theongoing war against terror. Muchheavier instal lments includingmartyrdom of innocent children inArmy Public School in December lastyear have already been paid. Butthere's no doubt in public mind thatPakistan is nearing a complete win inthe war on terrorism.

As I write these lines all TVchannels are flashing images of AirChief Marshal Sohail Aman, our chiefof air staff, himself leading the frontformation command of an airstrikeagainst terrorist hideouts. Wow! I loveit. And our Chief of Army Staff Gen.Raheel Sharif has earned a big namefor him for encouraging troopsengaged in the war on terror bycelebrating Eid with them. So,encouraging for the entire nation. Ilove his heroic deeds, too!

Pakistan's dealings with theoutside world is also becoming moreprincipled and more rooted in its ownnational agenda. Our insistence thatMr. Sartaj Aziz would meet Kashmirfreedom fighters' leaders first beforehis scheduled meeting with his Indiancounterpart has reportedly led tocancellation of the talks by India.

Here, again, a principle stand has notbeen given up which, too, is a signthat the new Pakistan is emerging.Demand for a nation-wide crackdownon corruption is getting louder andlouder. And our state institutionscannot afford to ignore it for long.Political issues are being handledmore adroitly than before. Politics isbeing purged of criminals. At ameeting of top military and politicalleadership's onAugust 21, it has beendecided that the National Action Plandrawn after the December 16 terroristattack on Army Public School wouldbe implemented in letter and spirit-and our TV channels are still flashingit as Breaking News as I write.Rebalancing of power betweenvarious organs of the state is goingon. Media is becoming moreresponsible, bit by bit. And, devolutionof democracy is about to restart withlocal bodies elections on the horizon.

But religious extremism is yet tob e d e a l t w i t h d e c i s i v e l y ,accountability of those in thegovernment and in bureaucracy is stillelusive and public welfare still restson the bottom of the national agenda.Women and youth empowerment andmeaningful health and educationreforms remain on low priority.

Economy will take years to shapeup but a will to improve economicconditions is quite visible. And rightsof minorities, women and children aregetting some attention of ourpolicymakers.

As I make these observations, Ifeel satisfied that Pakistan of our sonsand daughters is going to be betterthan ours. Am I being too optimistic!Perhaps so. But my Sheikh AhmedShah was all but optimistic aboutPakistan. That is perhaps why I'mcertain about a better, stronger, moreprosperous Pakistan as much as I'm

certain about my own self.Hazrat, (as I lovingly called my

Sheikh) would often say to me, inparticular, and to a handful of his otherdisciples, in general, that a newPakistan would emerge only after theend of the Zardari era. I think, theprocess of the emergence of newPakistan has begun. Congratulationsto all Pakistanis! We as Pakistanismust understand now that in the newPakistan there is no room for armedwings of political parties, there is noroom for poli t ical ly-designed,politically-supported corruption. Butat the same time, we also mustunderstand that in the new Pakistanshall be democratic, regardless ofhow power is shared between vitalorgans of the state. So, there isn'tand there shouldn't be any question ofthe military might underminingpolitical forces. Keep this in mind andyou get an idea of how must it hasbecome for the MQM to behave andhow imperative it is for our belovedarmed forces to continue to remainneutral in their anti-criminals drive inKarachi. The writer is a Karachi-based freelancejournalist.
