Rosie’s World's Greatest Shave Hello DHS community! When I was in Year 7, after only being

at high school for a couple of weeks, I decided to take part in

the World's Greatest Shave. Five years later, now in my final

year of school, I'm going to participate again to raise money

for the Leukaemia Foundation. Diagnosis of leukaemia can

considerably influence the lives of those affected, including a

member of our school community, Mandi Hatton, whose

nephew was recently diagnosed.

Leukaemia is a blood cancer, and 47 Australians are

diagnosed every day. With this diagnosis comes reliance on

many connections around those suffering, especially on

family and close friends. It also means that many families

become financially unstable, and they often need an extra

helping hand.

I have set the date to shave again in three weeks time, on the

24th of March. My goal is to raise $1000, and I believe I can

easily achieve this with everyone's help. The money raised

goes towards families affected, helping them for as long as

they need with accommodation during treatment, emotional

support services, information and education services, and

much more.

Donating is easy and can be done in more than one way, but the easiest is to find my page on the World's

Greatest Shave website, either by searching up my name, Rosie North, or by using the link below:

https://secure.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/registrant/FundraisingPage.aspx?RegistrationID=807984

If you're unable to donate money, sharing the link to my page, or spreading awareness helps just as much.

Every bit counts, and I can't wait to talk all about it in three weeks time! Thank you,

Congratulations Georgia

Principal Message Welcome to our second newsletter of the year.

Over the past two weeks we have welcomed a number of new staff into our school. Zoe Coffa has

joined us as the Relieving Head Teacher of Mathematics. Zoe has replaced Meagan Rodda who is

currently working in District Office in a consultation role. John Nyman has joined us and will be

teaching Maths and Science while Debra Wray started this week and she will be teaching language,

HSIE and working with our Aboriginal students. I would like to welcome all these people to our staff.

All families would have received a letter about the School Development Days changing. This term staff

and students from Deniliquin High School, Edward Public School, Deniliquin North Public School and

Deniliquin South Public School will be taking part in Restorative Practice training.

Restorative Practice is a whole school teaching and learning approach that encourages behaviour that

is supportive and respectful. It puts the onus on individuals to be truly accountable for their behaviour

and to repair any harm caused to others as a result of their actions. A restorative approach focuses on

building, maintaining and restoring positive relationships, particularly when incidents that involve

interpersonal conflict or misconduct occur.

Deniliquin High School will NOT be operating for students on

Tuesday 23rd

March.

I thank you in advance for your understanding and flexibility to allow this opportunity to occur for our

school.

Strategic Improvement Plan

We are well into the development of our 4-year School Improvement Plan (SIP). The SIP has been

based around a situational analysis that the school conducted last year where we looked at a range of

data that was available to us.

The SIP is divided into the three following Strategic Directions.

1. Student Growth and Attainment (this Strategic Direction is common across all schools

in the state)

Our purpose is the ensure all students demonstrate improvement in reading and numeracy. This will be

achieved through explicit, evidence based, data centred practices supported by a culture of high

expectations.

As a school we will focus on two areas in this Strategic Direction

i) High Expectations: Deniliquin High School will embed a culture of high expectations

resulting in positive student-teacher relations, constructive feedback, differentiated

instruction and effective strategies for student wellbeing and engagement. This will be

achieved through high impact targeted professional development for all staff.

ii) Explicit Teaching: Through explicit, research-based and data informed practice, teachers

will support students to use their knowledge and understanding to effectively comprehend,

solve and respond to questions in a range of contexts.

The key focus in this Strategic Direction is to improve the number of students in the top two bands of

NAPLAN by 5% in both Reading and Numeracy and to improve the percentage of students achieving

HSC results of 70%+ (Top 3 Bands) by 5%.

2. Teacher Practice and Collaboration

Our purpose is to improve the collaboration and sharing of skills between staff. Through Collaborative

Learning Teams all staff will be involved in improving teacher practice by working collaboratively within

and across faculties. Stage 4 project-based learning projects will increase staff collaboration and

through these programs, staff practice and collaboration will lead to improved student outcomes.

Page 3: Rosie s World's Greatest Shave - Deniliquin High School

Friday 5 March 2021 Issue 1 - Term 1 - Week 6

As a school we will focus on two areas in this Strategic Direction

i) Collaborative Learning Teams: To create a sustainable program of cross KLA

collaborative Learning Teams focused on collaboration and improvement of teacher

practice across the school. These teams will be supported through a structured

evidenced based professional development program led by the Head Teacher

Instructional Leader.

ii) Project Based Learning: To embed quality projects in the Stage 4 curriculum and

timetabling which results in improved student engagement and motivation. The Culture

Project in Year 7 and Sustainability Project in Year 8 will involve staff using evidence

based practices to work collaboratively to support student learning outcomes

3. Wellbeing

Our purpose is to provide an environment where all members of the school community develop

positive relationships in order to connect, succeed and thrive.

As a school we will focus on Restorative Practice in this Strategic Direction

i) Restorative Practice: To select, develop and embed strategies to proactively teach

healthy coping strategies, resilience and self-regulation with a focus on the

development of positive relationships. This will be achieved through professional

development of staff and students in Restorative Practices, and to embed these

practices into the culture of the school

I welcome any feedback that you may wish to provide around the plan. Please feel free to call me on

5881 1211 or via the school email [email protected] to provide your feedback.

Sport News Open Boys Cricket

On the 22nd

February Deniliquin High School participated in the Davidson Shield Cricket Gala Day with

Barham and Finley High Schools. The games were held down at Memorial Park which were in top

condition thanks to Tim Hillier’s preparation of the wicket. Each innings was limited to 15 overs with

mandatory retirement for batsmen at 40 runs.

The first game was against Finley with Deni High making a strong start. At one point Finley were on 8

runs for the loss of four wickets. However, Finley had decent depth in their batting line-up and

managed to make 90 runs in their innings. Finley’s bowling attack also stood up and they managed to

keep Deni High to less than 70. Charlie Hillier’s 37 runs and taking 3 wickets was the stand-out for

DHS.

The second game was between Barham and Finley. Barham had a young but determined side and

managed to win the game on the last ball. This left the final game between Barham and Deniliquin.

The boys were left with the task in their final game of making at least 100 runs and keeping Barham to

a low score. Once again Charlie Hillier led by example making 43 not out. This inspired Tom

McCallum to make 41 not out and Lachie Marshall 22 not out. By the close of Deni’s innings we were

133/4. Barham were kept to a total of 75 runs with the loss of seven wickets. Deni’s leading wicket

takers were C Hillier and Lachie Holloway, both with 2 wickets.

Thanks to Tim Hillier who prepared the ground, coached the team, assisted with umpiring and score

keeping. The boys and I are very appreciative of his time and support of the Open Boys Cricket team.

Wellbeing Matters International Day of Happiness – March 20 March 20 is the International Day of Happiness. This day

was created in 2012 by the United Nations as a way to

recognise the importance of happiness in the lives of

people around the world. As we face a global crisis together,

we must find positive ways to look after ourselves and each

other. This year’s theme is ‘Keep Calm. Stay Wise. Be

Kind.’

This year for International Day of Happiness, we will be

decorating the school to promote happiness, hosting a

sausage sizzle at lunch time and ‘happy’ food will be

available from the canteen. The SRC will also be holding a

Second-hand Clothing Sale. This will involve staff and

students donating any surplus clothes that they no longer

need so that other members of our school community can

buy them for a gold coin donation. These clothes, hats or

shoes must be clean and in good condition, without tears or stains; items that you have grown out of or

don’t want anymore would be suitable.

Clothes can be left in the baskets in the Library or Well-being Areas before Monday, March 15, and can

be exchanged for tokens to be used at the Clothes Sale.

Any funds raised through the sale of items will be donated to Ronald McDonald House on behalf of the

members of our school community who have benefited from the support they provide to sick children

and their families.

Congratulations Miss Norman Over the weekend, Miss Norman completed another of her marathon swimming challenges. She swam

in the open ocean from Sydney’s Palm Beach to Manly, seeing dolphins, a marlin, a hammer-head

shark and countless jellyfish.

The 24-kilometre swim was initially expected to take 7 hours, however due to strong winds and huge

waves, Miss Norman and her swimming partner, Richard ended up taking over 11 hours and they

swam about 30km. Miss Norman and her support crew, including Sam North in the accompanying

kayak, were all terribly seasick. There were times when both she and Richard wanted to stop as they

became dehydrated, sunburnt and stung all over by a sea of blue-bottles, but they did not stop. They

persevered, faced the task and completed their challenge. We congratulate Miss Norman on

overcoming this massive personal challenge.

SRC Planning Day The SRC is participating in a planning day on Monday, March 22 at Big4 Deniliquin. The aim of the day

is to develop important skills like teamwork and communication, establish the focus areas for 2021 and

decide on a new name for our extended committee. Mrs Laing and Mrs Van Lieshout will be assisted by

Kylie Andrews, our Student Support Officer, and Erica Singleton, Edward River Council.

Deniliquin High Year 8 Students Are Invited To Participate In Landmark Mental Health Program

Our school is very excited to be part of the exciting Future Proofing study that is being run by the Black

Dog Institute and the University of New South Wales. This is a five year study with 200 schools and up to

10 000 Year 8 students that will:

✓ Help us to understand the reasons why young people develop mental health problems in

adolescence – and how to prevent mental health problems in future

✓ Deliver mental health mobile phone apps

The researchers will be coming to Deniliquin to work with students on a CONFIDENTIAL mental

health survey and to provide students with mental health apps. And each participating Year 8

student will receive a $20 gift card to use in stores like Myer, Target, Kmart, Coles, Woolworths, Big

W, and with Google Play, Optus, Vodafone and others.

The results of this study have real potential to inform government policy and the scientific community.

For this reason, we are keen to get a good representation from Deniliquin High School.

The research team have recorded a 10-minute information webinar for parents. If you wish to learn

more about the study, you can watch the webinar here: https://youtu.be/Mf2OsMfFKSs

Year 8 parents/carers, if you haven’t already done so, please could you let us know of your decision regarding your child’s involvement in this study. You can visit the following website to complete the consent form online https://www.fpstudy.org.au/DeniHS or return the paper form if you have one. If you require further information, feel free to contact the Trial Manager, Kate Maston, at any time by email at [email protected] or phone 02 9382 9506, or contact Mrs Haylee Chadderton (Welfare Teacher) or Mrs Van Lieshout at school.

Wellbeing Matters Con’t Smoking Ceremony Congratulations to Isaac Wilson and Waripa Miller, who performed a smoking ceremony at the official

opening of the new South West Arts Office on Wednesday. The ceremony was attended by the Special

Minister of State, Minister for the Public Service and Employee Relations, Aboriginal Affairs, and the

Arts, Mr Don Harwin. Isaac and Waripa represented their proud heritage, families and Deniliquin High

School, standing like statues and only moving to tend the coolamon and flames. Mr Harwin even made

reference to them in his speech during the ceremony. Both boys will also be involved in the opening of the

music festival this weekend. Well done to both boys!

Art Well-being Program The Art Program has started off extremely well with Jo working hard to cater to individual student’s interests.

There has been plenty of weaving, painting, sculpting, photography and even some hand-knitting. Jo is now

creating some artworks to help promote the International Day of Happiness.

If you have any surplus canvases or frames at home, we’d love to have them. Please contact Mrs Van

Lieshout or drop them into the Front Office.

Breakfast Program A reminder that Deniliquin High School offers a free breakfast program to all students (and staff) every

Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8.20am until Roll Call. Cheese toasties, banana bread, hot chocolate

and Up & Go drinks are favourites with our students, although fruit and yoghurt as well as cereal are

available. We are extremely appreciative of the support provided by Foodbank, the Deniliquin Community

Group, Coles, Bakers Delight, IGA and the DHS P&C.

Careers News

Army Careers Day Excursion - Latchford Barracks, Bonegilla

Friday March 26th 2021 An excursion to Latchford Barracks has been organised for students (over 15 yrs) curious about the

ADF. The aim of this day is to showcase the technical trades and training offered by the Training

Establishments (Military Schools) within the Army Logistic Training Centre (ALTC) with many displays

from the Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Army School of Health, Army School of

Ordinance, the Defence Field Catering School, Army School of Transport, Military Police, Team Army

and Army Personnel Trainers. ALTC will showcase the many career options within Defence, whilst

giving students a snapshot of military life through weapons displays, physical training activities,

simulation and interaction. The option of Army Reserve service will be presented from local Reserve

members. Defence Force Recruiting Staff will also be on hand to provide specific recruitment

information that students may wish to know.

Vinnies KickStart Program Vinnies services have secured funding to run the KICKSTART program for students 17 years and over.

This program is designed to help young people gain entry level qualifications and certificates to help

improve job opportunities. However, due to the overwhelming response to the KICKSTART Program,

Vinnies services have advised the school that they can only accommodate a select number of students

and that other students will be contacted for the intake later in the year. Students will be receiving a text

message from Chantall at Vinnies services, outlining starting times etc... The course will run for 12

weeks over the school terms and students are expected to attend all sessions on Thursdays for the

coming months. On completion of this FREE course, students will have attained certificates in

Responsible Service of Alcohol, Food Handling, First Aid, Barista training, White Card and in addition

will receive professional driving lessons. All students involved in the course will be required to attend

roll call and the expectation is that students’ MUST catch up on any work missed on the KICKSTART

days.

Unique Student Identifier (USI) Year 10 are being asked to bring a photograph of their Medicare card to use as the form of ID to apply

for their own USI. All students will eventually require a USI and to assist them with future pursuits we

are organising time during Careers lessons for students to make their applications online. Students will

be asked to keep this number in a safe place in order to access it throughout their schooling/working

life. Parents may like to keep this in a safe place with other important records such as tax file numbers

etc…

Year 11 and 12 Melbourne Experience Excursion – May 31 to June 4 We have set a date for the Melbourne Excursion, and as it was postponed last year, we will be taking

the two senior year groups together. Year 11 students are currently nominating their preferences on an

Expression of Interest form. Once these are in we will distribute permission notes with costings. We

look forward to giving the students an opportunity to broaden their horizons and explore post-

secondary options, be it, joining the workforce or going to TAFE/Uni/private college. This is not simply a

tertiary trip, there are many more elements of exploration and expansion for our students.

SRE at Deni High

Special Religious Education (SRE), also known as “Scripture”, is offered to year 7 and 8 students.

SRE provides students the opportunity to understand the basics of Christian belief, develop critical

thinking skills and explore how a Christian perspective shapes behaviour, relationships and life.

Students are encouraged to raise questions and have discussions about faith, identify, purpose, values

and wellbeing.

In contrast to SRE at Primary school, High School SRE also aims to help students consider the ethical

and moral implications of faith and life. Penny Fowler is Deniliquin High schools accredited and

approved SRE teacher. Penny has trained in university student ministry as well as served in youth and

children’s ministry over a number of years. All lesson content is from an approved curriculum.

Year 7 and 8 students who wish to participate in SRE are required to return a permission note.

Sustainability 2.1

Year 8 students have been exploring the three pillars of sustainability; planet, people and profit. They have been investigating practices that are used at the school farm and local lagoons which meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Students have had a tour of the school farm and inspected the irrigation recycling system. They are learning about how this sustainable practice enables all the rainfall and excess water to be kept and reused.

During lagoon lessons, students have been working with Dale McNeil from the Deniliquin Kolety Lagoons Landcare Group to learn about wetland fish. Students are learning about fish breeding and monitoring programs.

Culture Project

Year 7 students have had a number of visits to the Yarkuwa

Indigenous Knowledge Centre. Karen Wilson gave students a tour of

the building, providing great insight into local indigenous culture and

artefacts. Students have also been working with Jeanette Crew

learning how to make string and weave.

Students have explored different nations and languages, comparing

similarities and differences. They have been learning about indigenous

art, exploring traditional symbols, styles and materials. Students have

also begun learning Wamba Wamba Perrepa Perrepa language; they
