Rotary Meeting 5th August 2013 at Wanneroo Tavern

Past President Owen Douglas resided over our meeting as President Norm was absent due to picking

up some German Exchange Students from the airport.

We made a toast to Australia and then sang grace.

Anson was asked to install his countries flag of Taiwan to be displayed for the next 12 months.

Derek Ball visiting from England was again welcomed to our club. Owen mentioned that Derek was

praying for rain in Manchester. Shame his prayers were answered.

Owen also introduced our guest speaker David Wright who was going to talk about “The Long Way

Across”.

Youth Services Director: Owen said that Anson has settled into living with Jan and Laurie Duffy but

asked if we could spend some time by picking him up and take him out for any trips we may do, as he

would be interested in going anywhere.

Tom mentioned that he had taken Anson to Government House the other week but Owen asked that

we don’t show him the inside of the lockup.

Treasurer: Andrew Kininmonth advised that he has been given all of the information from Clive and

will be working to get all invoices out to the members.

Subs are on their way so look out for them.

Secretary: Graeme Smith; we received a letter from Jan Duffy congratulating the club on its 42nd

Birthday Anniversary on 23rd July. Received an email from Greg Williamson from the Rotary Club of

Como asking for us to sponser him on the 13th Sept for a Perth to Margaret River to raise funds for

Prostate Cancer. Board meeting to decide. Rotary Venture Citizenship where we can send a student to

Canberra to see how it operates. Rotary International has some amendments to the constitution

which are done every 3 years and these have been sent through to us by Colin Thornlie to have a 5 mi-

nute meeting over the next 3 or 4 weeks to review.

We have a meeting with the Wanneroo Agricultural Society on Wednesday Evening at 7.00pm at 11

Leach Way, Wanneroo to discuss the Wanneroo Show Gates. We will inform everyone of the outcome

at the next meeting.

Page 4: Rotary bulletin 06 2013

Vocational Service: Neil Cook; Nothing at this time.

Attendance: Jacob Etoka; Jacob has been away so records will be updated.

Dolphin Wishing Well: Bill Kell; thanks to Colin for last Friday as we were down at the Dolphins for

3 – 4 hours making adjustments to the water level etc. Thanks also to Peter for finishing off the

cleaning task that was rained off the previous week. Bill and Clive had a meeting with Chris St Roas of

the Hillarys Boat Harbour Management to discuss the ongoing requests for work that we have asked

to be done such as the metal storage cabinet, lights, security camera, interactive display and seagull

repelling devices to stop the excrement problem on the Dolphins. We are pleased to report that we

have given tacit approval to go ahead so we will get quotes to take the next step and hope that funds

will be available through the Lotteries Commission. Ray will handle Interactive display enquiries. We

will go ahead to install storage cabinet that will assist in club members having all of the cleaning

materials at hand for the maintenance. We can install cabinet ourselves. We can place an electrical

warning label on it to deter vandalism.

Bulletin: Ray Perkins; as per my insert in the Bulletin I discussed with Norm the possibility of the

club purchasing 1 ticket that can be raffled off internally for all members that have paid their dues for

this year and are financial members before the raffle is drawn. All members gave approval for this so I

will organise with Norm for the ticket and make up the draw.

Raffle: Prize Winners:

1st Prize Owen Douglas (We may have to ban Presidents or Acting Presidents from draw)

2nd Prize Peter Miskelly

Sergeant: Phil Cousins; Birthdays Ian Bradshaw, Colin Parker has double whammy Anniversary to-

night and birthday this week so will get him next week (Also for the cricket). Raffle winners, Owen and

Peter. Laurie pinged for not signing the book. Paul and Bill not wearing Rotary badges. Derek Ball was

fined for perhaps not being here next week. All members that have not paid subs were pinged. Bill

attracted fine for watching Phil like a hawk at the football match and also for another holiday next

week.

Guest Speaker: Bill Kell introduced our guest speaker: David Wright

David is or was a Pom as he has been neutralised and has been living here for 11 years. He lives in

Darch, married to Carrol and has a son James. David was in the U.K. for 14 years and saw the light and

emigrated to Australia. He is serving in the police force for the past 11 years and is now an acting Sar-

gaent. When he stops acting the part he will let us know as he is a part time Magician.

David followed by informing us that he first came out here in ’95 on holiday and took back to England

a wife. David married in England and it was never a planned move to Australia but ended up moving

Page 5: Rotary bulletin 06 2013

here after all. When James was born 17 weeks early he only weighed 610g so was very tiny and

would not survive the night. The helped David make up his mind to do charitable work.

The ride that is planned “The Long Way Across” starts on Friday 6th September from Perth and fin-ishes on Saturday the 14th September in Canberra. David was able to make this trip due to the fact that his wife was able to follow in one of the support vehicles with his son so it makes it a great trip for all of them. The ride is to commemorate all of the Police Officers that have died and the plaque here in Perth will be touched on departure and the other plaque in Canberra will be touched on arri-val. They will be paying for their own accommodation and meals etc so all money raised will be do-nated to the cause of Bright Blue which goes to the sick kids. www.brightblue.org.au David is also a part time magician so at the charity events he goes around the tables performing

tricks entertaining people. David has raised nearly $3,000 out of the $5,000 that he is aiming at. Da-

vid is using his own bike a Harley Davidson Soft tail so it should be a good ride. They will need to re-

fuel every 250kms governed by the fuel tank capacity. There will be approximately 43 riders and the

Commissioner of Police is riding with them.

Peter mentioned that the Kingsway Football team had a win on the weekend.

Owen and Ian will be apologies for next week as they will be seeing the last Game that Essendon will

possibly play lol. Bill Kell will also be away so Reserve will need to step forward for Duty Officer.

Badge Box, register and speaker system will be required to be picked up from tavern for Forum

Meeting at Wanneroo Country Club.

Vote of Thanks: Ian Bradshaw gave our vote of thanks with presenting David with our Club Glass

and also our cheque to go towards this good cause.

Letter from Outbound Student Tristan in Denmark: July 2013 Dear Rotary Club of Wanneroo and Friends,

What a month it has been! I am on holidays at the moment and enjoying the Danish summer (25 degrees). I have been having fun on my family’s boat, water skiing and going on lots of exciting adventures. Early in the month my father came over from Australia to visit me here in Denmark. It was wonderful to see him after six months. On his arrival at the airport in Copenhagen we found our way into the city where we stayed for a couple of days. Copenhagen is an amazing city but I was more excited to take Dad to my home town of Nyborg (it is very different to the capital of Denmark). I really enjoyed showing Dad around and introducing him to my host families and friends. My host parents took us to lots of different places around Nyborg. In the few days we had together we were never short for words or topics of conversation. Our time slipped by quickly but it was worth every second!

On the 7th July I headed to the airport with my host family to board a plane for Geneva in Switzerland. When we arrived at the French border we drove into the Alps to my host family’s apartment in Chamonix. I don't think I have ever been so stunned with so much my beauty in all my life. As we drove into the mountains in the evening, the clouds covered the peaks so we couldn't actually see the top of the mountains. In the morning the clouds had disappeared and right there in front of my eyes stood the tallest mountain in Europe, Mt Blanc.

Pictures and words cannot describe the magnificent beauty! We stayed in the valley in Chamonix with mountains in every direction for as far as the eye could see. To kick start things in this ‘heaven on earth’ we began with rock climbing. It wasn’t long before I was climbing the faces with ease. Within the hour I was climbing ''leader'' which means I had no rope attached at the top-I was attaching the rope myself as I climbed. It was an incredible feeling as I had never done anything like this before.

Page 7: Rotary bulletin 06 2013

The next day we went mountain biking and I soon realised this was not one of my strong points! Riding up a very steep slope (one degree off vertical so it seemed) was not an easy task! When we finally reached the top, after the four kilometre ascent, it was time for the fun part, downhill! It's a lot faster on the way down and so much more exciting! After two kilometres of fresh air blowing in my face and some narrow roads, I felt very relieved to have survived our descent! The following day we climbed to a mountaineering refuge where we stayed the night. This was one of the most amazing sights of the whole trip. Getting to the top was an incredible feeling. When we finally reached the refuge next to ''Lake Blanc'' we were treated to the most beautiful sight-the sun setting over the mountain behind us. We woke up early the next morning to watch the sunrise-it was just as magnificent. You won’t believe it but I met a fellow Aussie up there! After our walk back home everybody felt exhausted so a well deserved siesta was in order!

The next day we had planned a rest day however my host day asked me to climb another mountain with him. Being such an adventurous guy and taking on the Rotary quote of the year, ''Never say no'', I had to take up the challenge. We ventured up the mountain once again and the following day I went up yet another mountain. On the last day I experienced white water river rafting down the main stream of Chamonix. Shooting down the ice cold water, freshly melted off the peaks, was a fantastic experience. The two degree water was absolutely freezing. We were very brave and jumped in at the end. Wow! What an unbelievable feeling!

My experience in Chamonix is one I will never forget. I cannot be more grateful to my won-derful host family who took me there with them for their family holiday. It is people like this that have made my exchange so special. I will always be grateful and hold onto this wonderful experience. I look forward to the day when I come back to climb Mt Blanc again. That’s it for now!

All the best from an Aussie having the time of his life in Denmark,

Tristan

“Phil's Scrotum”

The pastor asked if anyone in the congregation would like to express praise for answered prayers.

Suzie Smith stood and walked to the podium.

She said, "I have a praise. Two months ago, my

husband, Phil, had a terrible bicycle wreck and

his scrotum was completely crushed.

The pain was excruciating and the doctors didn't

know if they could help him."

You could hear a muffled gasp from the men in

the congregation as they imagine the pain that

poor Phil must have experienced.

"Phil was unable to hold me or the children," she went on, "and every move

caused him terrible pain." We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate

operation, and it turned out they were able to piece together the crushed

remnants of Phil's scrotum, and wrap wire around it to hold it in place."

Again, the men in the congregation cringed and squirmed uncomfortably

as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on Phil.

"Now," she announced in a quivering voice, "thank the Lord, Phil is out of the

hospital and the doctors say that with time, his scrotum should recover

completely."

All the men sighed with unified relief.

The pastor rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had something to say.

A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium. He said, "I'm Phil."

The entire congregation held its breath.

"I just want to tell my wife the word is sternum."

How Do Court Reporters Keep Straight Faces?

These are from a book called Disorder in the Courts and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and published by court reporters that had the torment of staying calm while the exchanges were taking place. ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning? WITNESS: He said, 'Where am I, Cathy?' ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you? WITNESS: My name is Susan! _______________________________ ATTORNEY: What gear were you in at the moment of the impact? WITNESS: Gucci sweats and Reeboks. ____________________________________________ ATTORNEY: Are you sexually active? WITNESS: No, I just lie there. ____________________________________________ ATTORNEY: What is your date of birth? WITNESS: July 18th. ATTORNEY: What year? WITNESS: Every year. _____________________________________ ATTORNEY: How old is your son, the one living with you? WITNESS: Thirty-eight or thirty-five, I can't remember which. ATTORNEY: How long has he lived with you? WITNESS: Forty-five years. _________________________________ ATTORNEY: This myasthenia gravis, does it affect your memory at all? WITNESS: Yes. ATTORNEY: And in what ways does it affect your memory? WITNESS: I forget.. ATTORNEY: You forget? Can you give us an example of something you forgot? ___________________________________________ ATTORNEY: Now doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn't know about it until the next morning? WITNESS: Did you actually pass the bar exam? ____________________________________ ATTORNEY: The youngest son, the 20-year-old, how old is he? WITNESS: He's 20, much like your IQ. ___________________________________________ ATTORNEY: Were you present when your picture was taken? WITNESS: Are you shitting me? _________________________________________ ATTORNEY: So the date of conception (of the baby) was August 8th? WITNESS: Yes. ATTORNEY: And what were you doing at that time? WITNESS: Getting laid ____________________________________________ ATTORNEY: She had three children , right? WITNESS: Yes. ATTORNEY: How many were boys? WITNESS: None. ATTORNEY: Were there any girls? WITNESS: Your Honor, I think I need a different attorney. Can I get a new attorney? ____________________________________________ ATTORNEY: How was your first marriage terminated? WITNESS: By death.. ATTORNEY: And by whose death was it terminated? WITNESS: Take a guess. ___________________________________________

Page 13: Rotary bulletin 06 2013

ATTORNEY: Can you describe the individual? WITNESS: He was about medium height and had a beard ATTORNEY: Was this a male or a female? WITNESS: Unless the Circus was in town I'm going with male. _____________________________________ ATTORNEY: Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney? WITNESS: No, this is how I dress when I go to work. ______________________________________ ATTORNEY: Doctor , how many of your autopsies have you performed on dead people? WITNESS: All of them. The live ones put up too much of a fight. _________________________________________ ATTORNEY: ALL your responses MUST be oral, OK? What school did you go to? WITNESS: Oral... _________________________________________ ATTORNEY: Do you recall the time that you examined the body? WITNESS: The autopsy started around 8:30 PM ATTORNEY: And Mr. Denton was dead at the time? WITNESS: If not, he was by the time I finished. ____________________________________________ ATTORNEY: Are you qualified to give a urine sample? WITNESS: Are you qualified to ask that question? ______________________________________ And last: ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing? WITNESS: No.. ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy? WITNESS: No. ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor? WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar. ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless? WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law.
